Band Camp Day 5

I’m e x h a u s t e d:

Late start today! 10 am!

Though we don’t usually have band camp on the Sunday, this year is different

Senior prank: wrap the gates in plastic wrap, put a tree at the top of the tower, and BAM it’s Christmas

When I got to the field, people were wishing me happy birthday, and then EVERYONE SANG TO ME

People have been wishing me happy birthday all day <3

“so are you 21 now?”

Ahahaha no I’m babey I’m 20

Did some basic band block

Then he made us march diagonally????

I guess I understand why but I don’t like it

We have to do a lot more block drill this year to stay socially distant, so marching diagonally is a lot more important now

We also did these little cube marching things? I don’t know how to describe them, but we got into groups of four, each started at a corner, and marched four steps to each corner, rotating counterclockwise

He had four of the drill instructors demonstrate it, and while he was figuring it out, those four led us in the chicken dance

He saw a cop and made his megaphone make a siren noise because he thinks it’s the most hilarious joke

Then we got into the block at the end of pregame, and he kept making us do things “just to see how it’d go” like dude

Then we grabbed our chairs and got into rehearsal block

Somehow we grabbed a chair for kitty who wasn’t even there??? None of us know how we did that

Played a song none of us knew how to, lots of jokes

“I hate it, but I’d still rather play it than On Wisconsin”

Broke into sectionals because it was sounding so bad, except it was 11:42 and we end at noon, and it takes us 5 minutes to walk to our tree and back so???

Called my mom during sectionals and we played her a lovely Bb scale

That’s something we did yesterday during sectionals: any time someone visited us, we played the most god awful, high-pitched Bb scale we could

Practiced the song a bit (it’s “In The Stone” by Earth, Wind, and Fire), then my grandma called, so I sat out to talk to her and let her sing happy birthday for me

Back to full band, where our band director said “play it perfectly and I’ll let you go to lunch” like haha funny joke

We also were the last section to get there, and he was like, “it’s like a herd of piccolos!”

So I added a tally of course

Lunch

Dome rehearsal! Today’s dress up theme was section colors, and we chose white

We did a lot of block band, and it was just a lot of figuring out how it all works, the echoing, etc

There was a point where my side of the block heard something wrong, so we tried again, and the other side of the block heard it wrong

We had to change the command rip

We did a playing rehearsal, and since the piccs are in the back, and we’ve never been in the back before, that was a trainwreck for a hot second

We figured it out because we’re Smart

Then we had a break!

I don’t have wi-fi at my apartment, so I was answering birthday snapchats and stuff when our band director came up behind me, looked at the picc section and said, “kids and their technology these days…”

So we all stopped and stared at him, not knowing what to say, so he continued, “Do you guys even know each other?”

And then he doesn’t walk away, no, he says, “Is [section leader] treating you alright?”

And we kinda hummed, we’re still Super Stunned so there isn’t a lot of noise happening

“how about [drill instructor]?” *proceeds to make fun of drill instructor’s name*

He has never known her name

We were l o s i n g it

Making eye contact with each other, the full shebang

He finally walked away and we fully lost our entire sh*t

The best part is that our section leader wasn’t even there, so we had to inform her of what happened

Break ended, marched pregame a bunch, and I don’t remember too much happening? He recorded us at one point so we can watch ourselves

He said “drumline, all those compliments I gave you earlier are out the window now,” and insulted them, so there’s that

When we ended rehearsal, it took him forever to get down from the bleachers, so we sang the jeapordy theme song

Drumline got the spirit stick, not that you guys know what that means, but lemme tell you: he always gives a small speech before awarding it, trying not to give the section away, and you’re supposed to gather clues from that speech

But I knew before he even opened his mouth who it was going to, because this man has a pattern, and the spirit stick is always awarded to the drum line during band camp

The sophomores led us in the alma mater and the fight song, and I was in the front, so I didn’t notice anything wrong, but apparently it was a trainwreck for the people in the back

Ngl I didn’t feel remorse because I was in the back the first time and it was a trainwreck for us, too

I feel like there’s stuff I’m forgetting, but I can’t think of any of it, so I guess I’ll just edit these posts as I think of it

15 shots of water, 5 of which were added when our band director was talking at the end of rehearsal, and 4 when he was talking to just the piccs (I rounded 6 to 10)

twilight sparkle for the character asks?

How I feel about this character - she is my wife!! I love her very much!! but aside from that. I think she's a very good character, at least, she is in episodes where her character isn't being massacred ashdghshs,, she's usually very fun to watch and, honestly, I wish she had been in more episodes as a central character. I mean specifically the one about the friendship mission in griffinstone. let twi join the adventure 2k20. overall I have a lot of Feelings about twilight, mostly positive (and also a lot are very angsty), and I think she's just like.. a good character.

All the people I ship romantically with this character - I have so many twilight ships so I'm just gonna list some of my top favorites,, twipie, obviously, it is my biggest otp and I am literally never not thinking about Them. I'm also very partial to twi x gilda and twi x skystar.. twi should just have a bird wife. uhh twijack and twishy are the best non-pinkie m6 ships for twi imo. twi x luna/tuna is Very Good and I love it A Lot, though please also consider tunapie because they all should be together. twi also definitely has a crush on lightning dust just, like, canonicly (have u seen the washouts??) so that's another Very Good one. I'm here for most twi x villain ships but especially chrysatwi and twiglimmer,, and also everyone ignores capper ships that aren't capperity but like just consider him with twi please (and also pinkie and fluttershy but this isn't about them)

My non-romantic OTP for this character - okay this is difficult tbh,, I mean, obviously, any of the m6 could fit here bc They Are All Best Friends (and also definitely all qpps) but uhh,, maybe sunset? just like, I feel like next to the m6, she's twi's closest friend (aside from spike, tho they're also family so their relationship dynamic is very different) and I like to think that twi writes her frequently, and also hangs out with her way more often than the show really lets on. and also I think the dynamic of "you're dating me from another dimension but we're just friends" is very funny. I also think twi and zecora make good friends, and I wish we had seen more of them together in the series!

My unpopular opinion about this character - I honestly don't know what opinions are unpopular but uhh,, I don't think twi should be the main character of g5, or yhat any of the m6 should for that matter. I love twilight but g4 is just like.. her generation. I would like g5 to be completely independent of that and of her. that wasn't really twi specific whoops uhh,, most of my opinions relating to her are really just twi-adjacent and not really About Her so like, sorry ajjsjjdh no spicy hot takes about this character today

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon - is it cheating to say I wish twipie had happened? ashjjddjs,, I guess I just wish she had had more consistent characterization overall? I wish she had just, like, gotten neighsay fired for being a racist ass ahsjjdhs does that count?? I wish she had gone on the griffinstone adventure,, I already mentioned that but I think it would've been very good

Basketball 2k20

I'm so excited for this season we are basically gonna have the same team we had 2 years ago maybe even better and 2 years ago we won it all it was amazing. Basketball take lots of time and effort but it's a sport that I really enjoy it's been my favorite sport since I could remember I only started to play in grade 8 and I kinda regret that I dint play sooner. Last year was my second year of basketball and we finished second and i won mvp. So I cant wait to see how this seasons gonna go and how well I'm gonna play. Its gonna be a great adventure and hopefully a great feeling once we win. Basketball is just so fun 2k20 will be fantastic. Try outs will probably be next week because the first game is November 18 it's right around the corner I'm so excited I also cant wait to go to bcs last year i had a blast and the food was amazing. I'm gonna play my heart out and have a blast doing it with fantastic ballers. Cant wait to wear the gold medal around my neck. Go Spartans go!! Gonna be a great season so come watch our games we wont let you down😉

Band Camp Day 4

Band camp is half as long this year, so why am I twice as tired?

I broke my laptop--it’s a wonder I can even get this out tonight:

So some stuff I forgot yesterday: my band director mentioned crash and burn, which is something we’re Not Supposed to Tell The Freshmen

It’s the thing where we make them stand at set and we try to break them

Thankfully not a lot of people heard him say it, but

The senior prank was zip-tying the gate shut (today it was setting up hammocks and tents because it’s band camp)

I got super hydrated and it made me really hyper it was super weird 0/10 hated it

So we started the day with doing some step-size exercises, except the band director wanted it a specific way

He didn’t get his way, and he got mad

Every time he explained it, he gave us a different explanation so

He had the drill instructors come to the front to demonstrate, but they still couldn’t figure out what was up

It was a trainwreck. At one point they had all the drill instructors go back to their section to explain what was happening, then the DI’s got back together, and each of them had said something different to their section

If the band director wanted a specific thing, then he shoulda just called out the commands himself, but n o

It was literally half an hour of the DI’s demonstrating and trying to figure out what to do

The band director tried to explain it to them again, and stood right in front of my DI to do it, but like, not facing her

It was rude, anyway

Band Director, getting annoyed at the questions: “What is your point?”

The trumpet DI: “What is YOUR point?”

So then it got around to the band marching it, quote my band director, “If it took them this long, let’s see how long it takes the entire band!”

That’s a sign we shouldn’t do it

It took us a hot sec, lemme tell you

We took a break after that, then marched pregame

Apparently there was some problem with the drill, and my band director was like “let’s fix it by moving the entire drill four steps north”

So we did that, everyone messed up, and the band director got mad

Quote one of the drumline, “You just moved the problem five yards to the left!”

We fixed it eventually, but it was annoying

He also added a spin? It sucks

Playing rehearsal

Nothing special happened until sectionals, while we threw seeds from the trees at each other and annoyed other sections with an awful Bb scale

Super fun

Full band, again nothing happened

Dinner

Freshman of the year, one of our piccs came in second!!! I’m so proud

Some guy I don’t know won it, but it’s determined by a freshman-only elimination block

I won it my freshman year, if you remember

Crash and burn! We all set up for pregame, took the returners out, and the freshmen marched it

The piccolos brought three kittens, dressed up, and I took selfies with everyone

The pictures actually turned out decent

And then we did the thing where we go hiking (we went to the beach to socially distance) and the seniors all talk and cry about their band experience to the freshmen

Band Camp Day 1

Yes, we’re having band camp in the midst of a global pandemic

Essentially: I use tumblr as an actual blog for a week. Or a diary. Whichever.

Now I know what you’re thinking: band camp? We’re literally at the height of coronavirus

You’re right, we are. It is way less of a problem where I go to university, but it’s still not the best idea, I know

We are all taking bets on how long this lasts and when the uni is gonna switch us back to fully online, and my bet is a little less than a month. My friends have all said 2-3 weeks.

The uni is also testing all of us, I got tested on the 8th because band kids needed to be tested at least two days prior (it takes two days to process)

Except that’s a lie because my results aren’t in and neither are anyone elses

Okay that’s an exaggeration, half of them are probably back

Anyway, onto how the band is handling this

Band camp was shortened by a couple days to allow for testing, so we started today instead of Sunday/Monday. Leadership started this morning, and the rest of us started at 12:30pm.

We were supposed to start yesterday, but covid results weren’t coming in fast enough, so we had to postpone another day

I definitely needed the extra practice time, though, I guess

Not that I used it properly, but spoiler alert: I’m third chair out of twelve

Okay but I guess I went to Biggbby before practice instead of practicing but a n y w a y

Got there, got in a circle, seeing our freshmen for the first time and old friends for the “first time”

Because we definitely Did Not all see each other several times in the days leading up to band camp

We all checked it, which was super quick

So in the past, the band gets into an entire block, and that’s called “block” and we sorta just figure it out by section, and then we use that same configuration for the rest of the year, but this year we got assigned seats, essentially

I was put in the back, moved to the front, then put so far back I’m only by one person??

Does that sound like a block to you??

And then we did auditions

Outside

We walked so far away from the practice field, we may as well have been in a different timezone

All of band camp is outside this year. Playing rehearsals, meetings, everything.

Social distancing, of course

Masks on whenever we aren’t playing

That, we actually are managing to do

And yeah, I’ll keep you updated on how much of a dumpster fire this becomes

In the meantime, my friends and I are all in two apartments, living together, so if one of us gets it, the entire section goes down, and speaking of the section, we have 4 freshmen!

We were supposed to have, like, 9, but our band director literally kept urging them to switch instruments until 5 of them did

It made us really mad, it was a whole ordeal

Like we were specifically targeted, and yeah we were one of the biggest sections, but there are others just as big

And the drumline didn’t even need anyone else

It’s so maddening—all of the returning piccolos are angry

Like one of them went to colorguard, and our band director practically asked right in front of our drill instructor

Again, it’s a whole, very maddening, thing

Back to the program: after the auditions (we were the last to finish, but #notlast) we headed back to the practice field where our band director started without us

But the worst part is that he started right as we were walking across to put our stuff down? Like if felt like an extra “f*ck you” because he could have waited five more seconds but no

“but the piccolos aren’t unappreciated or disregarded or anything”

Ugh anyway

We played scales, went home for dinner, met at the music building (outside because of covid), marched down to the practice field as we always do

Spaced out a Ton Extra because covid (part 87648687)

People shouted “you’re doing great” which my compliment-deprived husk liked

Our band director said “looking good” when he looked at our section, and $1 million says he didn’t know we were the piccolos

We learned how to march until the end of practice (9pm), then we sang the alma mater and fight song as we usually do, but not really

We usually all form lines of side hugs (is there a name for that?) and sway back and forth, but because of covid, we had to stay still

It made it a lot harder, actually

Oh, during our one (1) break, we made our groupchat and Immediately memes and shenanigans began. This is a good section this year, folks. We’re close already, which is amazing

Other sections could never

Our after band activity was the scavenger hunt, which if you don’t know, we won two years ago, when our section chant became “Not Last” (which we still chant to this day)

It’s a very important night for the piccolos, to say the very least

We got 6th out of 7th, so I guess that’s not last, but also we suspect the judging was very biased even though they said it wasn’t

Reading this, you might be like “anni, you’re paranoid, they aren’t treating the piccs that badly” but I promise you, I can pull pages of receipts that I don’t really want to say on a public tumblr post, so sorry

The only people who read these are my friends, anyway, so I trust that you guys believe me

The scavenger hunt was fun though! It involves a lot of waiting, and we really bonded during that, too

We played ninja, which made other sections start playing ninja

But the piccolos aren’t close or anything

We sang country roads for a hot second

We did a bajillion dumb ice breakers

“everyone say what pet you have”

I said “I have a little brother, a dog, and a fish”

“if you could go anywhere, where would you go?”

I said “the grave”

Apparently that one isn’t wholesome like everyone else’s

Got home, my section leader called me because even more Piccolo Hatred happened, which I’m definitely not typing out here, sorry, and now it’s time for me to sleep!

This may get posted late depending on my wi-fi situation, but theoretically, I’ll see you guys tomorrow

Band Camp Day 3

how tf do I have to take 20 shots of water when my band director wasn’t even there until the last two and a half hours

Honestly it doesn’t even feel like I’ve done 3 days of this:

but don’t ask me what it actually feels like because idk that either

so we start the day with the longest heckin band block e v e r

and like it’s not, it was just half an hour, but my arms hurt afterward

if you don’t know what that means, it just means we were at attention for thirty minutes straight marching, listening to whatever the drum majors told us to do

"My arms hurt!” “That’s the point, Kyle!”

So then we got a quick break, then split into marching sectionals

I wasn’t doing very hot during sectionals, like, I kept messing things up, I was really tired, etc

and then we were like “well, we did everything, now what?”

We saw one of the sections attempting a snake, and we were like “well. We could try.”

a snake is when we form one line and follow whatever the leader does. It’s very independent and takes some concentration

my section leader wanted to be the front, and of course I was put second, so it’s Extra Concentration

the thing is, we aren’t exactly allowed to do the snake because we need to be social distancing. Everything is four step spacing, and traditionally, the snake is two step spacing

so we did four step spacing, which made it even harder at first because I wasn’t used to it

we demonstrated for the freshmen, and I messed up but hey

so then we did it For Real

so we were doing the snake, and it was all fun, everything was fine, I wasn’t messing up, and then another section joined

the mellos or altos or something

and we were like oooOoOoOOO because it’s always fun when sections join forces and do things like that

also Extra Pressure to not mess up but yknow

and then even more sections joined, the drum majors joined, and we had a Really Long Snake

We went all the way across the field, since the more sections we got, we got to take their sectionals space, and the other drill instructors joined ours in clicking

oh btw, the drill instructors don’t do it with us, they keep time. Ours was like “i’ll start and stop you”

and ofc she couldn’t stop us with so many people--not easily, anyway, since vocal commands wouldn’t reach any of us

anyway one of the drill instructors ran up to my section leader and was like “go circle [our band director]”

he was in his car, but we went straight up to him

he wasn’t thrilled to see that the piccolos were leading lemme tell you

but then after that, we got called off (I didn’t hear it but)

we were doing that for, like, 20-25 minutes

apparently, when the clarinets joined, our drill instructor said “should I stop them? the piccs have been doing this for a while” their drill instructor replied with, “nah, it’s helping them learn” “they’ve been doing this for 15 minutes” “oh”

It was a fun moment

we took a mini break then when back to full block band, and honestly?? that snake helped my marching so much??

like d a n g my step sizes were all equal and everything

I had to lead some stuff (due to where I stand and the exercises we were doing) and I didn’t mess anything up

and honestly that’s all I remember from morning rehearsal, like those were The Two Big Things

playing rehearsal was fine, we did sectionals, napped for the first 10 minutes because we were dead

btw at this point our band director hadn’t been seen for hours and the drum majors had been doing everything

he was writing drill

so we took a break after sectionals (lots of breaks because it was insanely hot out today) then got back into block

released half an hour early because the drum majors Understand

dinner

got biggby

night rehearsal!

we learned pregame!

so the picc numbers were in pairs, so our drill instructor paired returners with freshmen, and apparently all the other drill instructors did the same, so now in the beginning sets, there’s an entire line of drill instructors/high skilled returners, and the next line is Entirely Freshmen

Which, due to how pregame is written, causes problems later in the drill

I eventually end up with a few freshmen around me, one trumpet and one alto, and they’re both super nice and followed my supervision

generally in pregame, the sections all start out spread out, and by the end we’re all together

but this time the piccs are still spread out by the end, and you can really tell we were the Fillers

we sing at the end of every rehearsal, and juniors led, so I was like Oh Heck That’s Me

and then we were done!

tonight’s activity was getting ice cream, and the piccs all collectively decided to skip because we’re tired

also I wanna point out that both racially and sexually we are the most diverse section, which in my small, white school, is pretty awesome

Band Camp Day 2

Our anger is united

sorry if this is short, I’m tired and angry:

Started at 9 instead of 8:30

Everyone was obviously tired

Did marching basics for 2/3 of rehearsal, then added our instruments to make it ~*~spicy~*~

Took the freshmen out of the block, did the fight song routine, added the freshmen, messed up the fight song routine

Lunch at noon

Ate lunch, talked sh*t

Playing rehearsal at 1:30

We all had to sit outside in chairs, and he put piccs in the way back for some stupid reason

Like jesus Christ I’m behind the drumline

Can’t we catch one break

And then we played some songs, did sectionals, which stayed sort of on topic but

It wasn’t the worst

Back to full band, played more songs

Band director: “when we’re inside, my ears are usually ringing, but here they’re not!”

the piccolos, who know why and are unimpressed,

Band director: *tells a story we’ve heard every year*

BD: and you’d never guess what he played!

Anyway

Our BD talked about how the tubas were in the back and couldn’t hear and all the piccs were like ???? we are in the exact same position???

5:00, rehearsal done, put away our chairs, because that’s covid friendly, and dinner time

6:30, time for band again, and it was just some more marching while playing

We did this thing where each section marched across the field while everyone else watches (we do this every year)

Every single section got compliments, we went last, and no joke our BD said, “your marching is getting there, your playing—well you have to remember that this section isn’t used to playing on these instruments. You’ll get better. I’m proud of you guys”

The proud bit is complete nonsense

And the entire other part of it was too

Like what the h*ll?

Before we marched across, I told one of our freshmen that that would happen, and she made eye contact with me as soon as it did

And then one of our other freshmen was like “why did every other section get a compliment and we didn’t”

And then all the freshmen were talking about it

They catch on quick, and we told them just as much

Yeah, it really sucked

After that we did a playing rehearsal and all I remember is hating our BD for the entire thing and not being able to hear anything from the back

At some point my section leader shouted that and someone said “no one cares” so there’s that

Ugh

I have to take a shot of water any time a certain thing happens and lemme tell you I hit 18 today

(16 yesterday)

Tonights band activity was section bonding! We did a mini hike in the dark, ended on a beach, made a fire, made s’mores

It was super fun! All the other sections are prolly like “we went to so-and-so’s house” and we’re out here like “we went on a HIKE in the DARK in the WOODS and built a FIRE”

Shared some band director stories on why we hate him

There was another group there, and at one point two girls who were on the soccer team came over and said hi and ate some s’mores

They were probably drunk but hey it was kinda fun

We told them we were in the band, the piccolo section, and the senior was like “I was in band in highschool?” “What did you play?” “Clarinet” “Ahhhhh”

we all had the exact same response to that asdfghjkl, so she said, “Do you guys have something against that?”

so we said, “at least you’re not a trumpet”

and the other girl who was with her, a sophomore, said “I was”

that was really funny, I promise we all laughed

We played never have I ever, which is a sorta inside joke? Kinda? Tbt to before I was in the section

And then we hiked back to the cars

It was fun, we’re all very tired, but it’s a really good group this year

I love them

We also have another freshman coming in at some point soooo

Oh! One of the drumline members texted our section leader saying “he ripped you guys apart, I’m so sorry, I don’t understand why he hates you guys so much” and we respect one (1) drumline in this house
