A Prospective Cohort Study Comparing Medical Student Intubation on Cadaveric and Manikin Models Using the King Vision™ Videolaryngoscope and Direct Laryngoscopy-Juniper Publishers
Abstract
Objective: Compare intubation by medical students with direct laryngoscopy (DL) versus King Vision™ videolaryngoscope in training and cadaveric models.
Methods: 24 medical students with no experience intubating humans were randomized into two groups: DL first or King Vision™ videolaryngoscope first. Following a short training, techniques were practiced ona manikin model. Intubation success, ease of use, and one timed manikin intubation was recorded. Students crossed, repeated training and trial with other technique. Students then intubated 3 cadavers with their initial technique, crossed over to intubate these same cadavers using their second technique. Cormack-Lehane (C-L) view of the glottic opening, time to intubation, intubation success, ease of use, and preferred technique were recorded.
Results: In manikin intubation, success rate was not significantly different. Mean time to intubation using DL was 19.67 seconds, 11.03 seconds with King Vision™. The median “ease of use” for DL was 7; King Vision™ was 4 (0 easiest, 10 hardest). In cadaver model, the median C-L view was 2 for DL, 1 for King Vision™. Success rates were 82% for DL and 93% for King Vision™. The median “ease of use” for DL was 5 and King Vision™ was 4.
Conclusion: The King Vision™ videolaryngoscope had statistically significant improved visualization of the glottic opening, intubation success rate when compared to DL, and was rated easier to use. Given the portable nature, low cost, ease of use, and easy maintenance; the King Vision™ videolaryngoscope should be considered an excellent device for intubation training orany emergent setting where advanced airway management is required.

Introduction
Orotracheal intubation is a critical skill required to manage patients with airway compromise or respiratory failure. Traditionally, direct laryngoscopy (DL) has been the standard method used to intubate patients. DL can be complicated by many factors that obstruct direct visualization such as pathology to the oropharynx (e.g. tumor) and limited mobility of the cervical spine [1-5]. Videolaryngoscopes (VL), which provide an indirect view of the glottis and vocal cords, have been in use as an adjunct to DL for over a decade [2,6,7]. Due to its ability to see “around the corner” via indirect visualization of the glottic opening, VL has been recommended for intubation in patients with limited neck mobility, airway anatomy that is difficult to visualize, and for training novice intubators in laryngoscopy [1,2,4-6,8-11]. The King Vision™ VL is a relatively new, single unit, indirect videolaryngoscope that is lightweight, has a self contained high-resolution camera, is battery operated, and has a curved blade with the option of a tube-guiding channel for easier intubation. Unique to the King Vision™ setting it apart from other VL is its low cost and portability relative to all other VL.
Objective
The purpose of this investigation was to compare timing and intubation success of the King Vision™ VL to DL in a manikin and cadaveric model by medical students with no prior intubation experience on human beings. Secondary outcomes were ease of use of DL and the King Vision™ VL in both the manikin and cadaver model as well as the Cormack-Lehane (C-L) view in cadaver model only as this is the model that best simulates real life intubating conditions.
Material and Methods
This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Texas Southwestern. This was a randomized cross-over simulation study design in which 24 first year medical students with fewer than 5 manikin intubations, not previously employed in healthcare, and no prior intubation  experience on human beings were randomized into two groups. Group 1 was initially trained in the use of DL followed by testing their ability to intubate with DL on a manikin model. Group 2 was initially trained in the use of the King Vision™ VL followed by testing their ability to intubate with this device on a manikin model. Then, each group crossed over to intubate with the other technique using the same training and testing as detailed below. All training was performed using an adult Laerdal® airway management trainer (www.laerdal.com).
All participants were recruited by campus wide email and received no compensation for participation other than intubation skills training. Exclusion criteria were extensive intubation experience, defined as 5 or more previous lifetime attempts, or any prior human intubation experience. After written informed consent was obtained, each participating student was required to review an 11-minute DL intubation video, read a 4-page tutorial on basic endotracheal intubation, and attend a 10-minute orientation on the King Vision™ VL. Group 1practiced DL intubation using a Macintosh 4 laryngoscope on a manikin model and Group 2 practiced VL intubation using the King Vision™ VL with a channeled blade until each student demonstrated 3 successful intubations and felt comfortable with their assigned technique. Students then had a timed intubation on the same manikin that they practiced their assigned technique. The time to intubation and success rate was recorded. The time period started once the tip of the laryngoscope passed the lip of the manikin and ended once the student verbalized that the intubation was complete. A research assistant confirmed endotracheal tube placement in the manikin via direct visualization. After completing a timed intubation on their assigned technique, each student completed a written survey to assess their perceived ease of use for that intubation technique using a 0-10 scale with 10 being “very difficult” and 0 being “easy.”The students then crossed over techniques and repeated the intubation training, testing and survey.
Students were then assigned to 3 of 6 cadavers, each intubating all 3 assigned cadavers with the first technique, then crossing over to intubate these same 3 cadavers using the other technique. Students were asked to assess the C-L view of the cadaveric glottic opening for each timed intubation with each technique. As described in 1984 by Drs. Cormack and Lehane, the C-L view was graded as follows: 1) Grade 1, most of the glottis is visible, 2) Grade 2, only the posterior extremity of the glottis is visible, 3) Grade 3, no part of the glottis (only the epiglottisis visible), and 4) Grade 4, not even the epiglottis can be exposed [12]. The following information was recorded for the cadaver intubations: time to intubation as described above with the manikins, C-L view of the glottic opening, and proper endotracheal tube (ETT) placement. ETT placement was confirmed by direct observation of the ETT in the trachea through a window created in the cricothyroid membrane by investigators, who were blinded to the study group of the participant during the intubation procedure. The C-L view was verbalized to the research assistant present at the time of each intubation. After completing intubation on the assigned cadavers, each student completed a written survey to assess their perceived ease of use of each intubation techniqueas mentioned above with the manikins. Study was limited to 24 participants due to time, availability, and materials constraints.
Results
A total of 24 first-year medical students (10 (42%) male, 14 (58%) female) were consented to participate in the study. The King Vision™ VL is abbreviated as VL in the results section for the purpose of simplicity.
Manikin data
There were 48 measured intubations performed by the students on manikins, 24 DL and 24 VL. The intubation success rate was 92% (n = 22) for DL and 96% (n = 23) for VL, p-value = 0.50 with Fisher’s exact test. The mean time to intubation was 19.67 seconds using the DL and 11.03 seconds using VL, p-value = 0.015 with Student’s t-test, Table 1. Utilizing Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, the median ranking for “ease of use” was 7 for DL and 4 for VL on a 0 to 10 scale with 0 being the easiest to use and 10 being the most difficult, p-value = 0.003, indicating that students thought the VL was easier to use, Figure 1 which has transformed the 0 to 10 scale into a larger scale on the vertical axis to better demonstrate the distribution of the data.
Cadaver data
There were 144 cadaveric intubation attempts (all 24 students intubated 3 different cadavers with each technique): 72 DL and 72 VL. The median C-L view grade was 2 for DL and 1 for VL, p-value < 0.001.Generalized Estimating Equations were utilized for our ordinal values of the C-L grade, Table 2. Eighteen of the intubation attempts were unsuccessful: 13 DL and 5 VL. Success rates were 82% (59/72) for DL and 93% (67/72) for VL, p–value = 0.044, Table 1. Generalized Estimating Equations were used as successful intubation was a binomial variable and confirmed that success rates were statistically higher with the VL method. No statistical difference was seen in the time to intubation for the method (DL vs. VL), Table 1. Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance was used to determine if the time to intubation varied between the DL and VL methods of intubation for all participants. The intubation technique that was used first by the student made no significant difference in time to intubation or success. “Ease of use” for the cadaver model utilizing the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test demonstrated that the VL was also easier to use in the cadaver, p=0.048 Table 2 & Figure 2. There was a positive trend in mean time from the first to third intubation with VL from 51.0s to 25.9 s. DL had no improvement with repeat intubation Table 3 & Figure 3.
Discussion
The results of the current investigation clearly demonstrate that the King Vision™ VL has advantages compared to DL, consistent with other VL performance in the current literature. The King Vision™ was considered easier to use by participants, had a higher success rate and better C-L scores. However, when compared to other videolaryngoscopes, the King Vision™ VL is less expensive, utilizes disposable blades, and is very portable.
The increased first pass success and C-L grade observed with King Vision™ VL in this study are consistent with a 2014 study by Murphy et al. using novice paramedic students in a cadaver model. In this study, the King Vision™ VL had a higher success rate over DL, faster time to intubation, and better C-L grades [10]. Although our study showed insignificantly faster intubation times with DL in the cadaver model, the time to intubate decreased by almost 50 percent with successive attempts using the King Vision™ VL, indicating a rapid learning curve with the use of this device. In the current investigation, both glottic opening visualization and intubation success rates were significantly improved with the King Vision™ VL using the cadaveric model. Two meta-analyses of VL (GlideScope, X-Lite, Storz, McGrath, and Pentax-AWS) versus DL found equivocal results in success rate, but a significantly better view in difficult airways for VL. This is consistent with a study by Murphy comparing King Vision™ to DL [6,10,11]. One frequent finding is that increased visualization of the glottic opening using VL may not proportionally translate to improved success or faster intubation times [2,6,11,13,14]. DL failures are typically due to inability to visualize glottic opening [14]. Most failures with VL are not from poor visualization but instead, are due to the inability to pass the ETT into the trachea [14-16]. This is often due to incongruence between the location of the glottic opening on VL and the trajectory of the ETT and is likely due to advancing the VL blade too distally, positioning of the rigid stylet used in the King Vision™ VL, or a very anteriorly placed glottis. Subtle maneuvers, equipment modifications and practice can reduce difficulties in passing the ETT. A Japanese meta-analysis showed significant improvement in success and time to success in VL (Airtraq and Pentax-AWS) with a channeled blade vs. DL [9], facilitating placement of the tip of the endotracheal tube much more anteriorly. The current investigation used a model of the King Vision™ VL with the channeled blade. Although we demonstrate a low failure rate consistent with most studies of King Vision VL, the most common reason observed for a King Vision™ VL intubation failure is poor technique, which can be remedied using adequate training and briefly retraining if the device is rarely used [17].
The King Vision™ VL may used as a teaching tool for novice intubators similar to other VL, and has advantages over them for training purposes due to its portable nature. Use of VL to train novice intubators has shown higher success rates using DL for endotracheal intubation in patients with normal airways as compared to training utilizing DL [5]. The shortcomings of DL for emergent intubators include significant training and practice to become competent with the direct laryngoscope and poor first-attempt tracheal intubation success rates [10]. The rapid progression in time to intubation with the King Vision™ VL seen in this data set is consistent with a study by Ayoub et al. which demonstrated a more rapid acclimatization to VL with a drastic decrease in time to intubation over 3 successive attempts when compared to DL on surgical patients undergoing anesthesia [5]. Several studies have demonstrated the ease of use of many videolaryngoscopes with a shorter learning curve as compared to DL [5,13]. In addition, any level user can easily gain skills in VL because glottic visualization is not diminished to the same degree, nor by the same factors that limit DL [4,18]. This is especially pronounced in the difficult airway setting with VL success of 76.4% compared to DL of 8.8% in one study [4]. In addition to steep learning curve and worse success with difficult airways, another pitfall of DL is the deterioration of skills if not frequently practiced. Murphy elaborates, ‘even in larger institutions and systems, the opportunities to maintain intubation skill is limited, with a significant proportion of practitioners having one or no intubations per year’ [10]. Having a device that is easy to use and portable makes continuing training easier to access and allows the retention of intubation skills even in a setting of infrequent intubation opportunities. Furthermore, it has been shown that training on manikins is an adequate strategy if events to train are rare or unpredictable [13]. Use of VL accelerates skill acquisition, can be used as the primary training technique, and can be used to retrain on manikins for infrequent practitioners with sufficient quality in training.
The King Vision™ VL has several clinical advantages over many other VL currently on the market in addition to ease of use and portability. Two case reports discuss the King Vision™ VL and its use clinically. One describes the success of King Vision™ VL for a difficult awake intubation of a patient with restricted mouth opening in a remote area with limited resources [19]. The King Vision™ VL was the only VL on the market that could have successfully intubated this person as no other VL has as narrow of a blade [19]. VL are also known for being easier to use than fiberoptic intubating scopes in most patients as the approach to intubating with VL is more similar to DL, the traditional method used for intubating. The second case series used the King Vision™ VL in awake intubations in patients with pathologic abnormalities in airway anatomy making normal visualization with standard DL impossible [17]. King Vision VL can be used in the pre hospital environment. Studies with paramedics in a simulated environment have shown King Vision™ VL is at least as good as and may be situationally more effective than DL under unusual circumstances such as, entrapped patients with both normal and difficult airways [10,20,21]. Other potential uses and future studies include unexpected in-hospital code situations on ward beds, international travel emergencies, public arenas, disaster scenarios, and pre-hospital intubation.
There were several limitations to the current investigation. The most obvious limitations were the small sample size and the simulated environment in which this study was conducted. In order to observe repeated measures data, ideally a repeat study will be performed with sample size of significant power to test the effects of different cadavers, the order in which the two methods were applied, and all interactions to better determine the factors that impact successful intubation. With the current preliminary study, we do not have the sample size needed to handle these more vigorous repeat measures analyses. We believe with a more concrete selection process, we will likely be able to confirm that, for most beginners, intubation using the King Vision™ VL method will consistently demonstrate improved C-L views, success rates, and time to intubation. The King Vision™ VL is a relatively new device and as of the writing of this article, a PubMed review did not identify any hospital based clinical trials completed, although a large Swiss multicenter trial protocol is written and currently ongoing with an objective of comparing 6 VL, 3 channeled blades (King Vision™, Airtraq™, A. P. Advance™)and 3 unchanneled blades (C-MAC™, GlideScope™, McGrath™) in surgical intubation and an expected completion date of August 2015 [22].
Conclusion
The King Vision™ VL not only improves visualization of the glottic opening and intubation success rate, but it is easy to use. Although intubation times were insignificantly longer with the King Vision™ VL, cadavers were still successfully intubated rapidly and students demonstrated drastic improvement with successive intubations. Given the greater success rate of the King Vision™ VL, the utility in intubating patients with a more difficult airway most likely parallels other videolaryngoscopes. It is a useful tool for training students and maintenance of intubating skills. Considering the portable nature, low cost, ease of use, and easy maintenance; the King Vision™ VL should be considered to be an excellent videolaryngoscopic device in any emergent setting where advanced airway management is required.

It’s a Match! The 10 Best Cities for Singles to Live, Play—and Buy a Home
iStock; realtor.com
For the past five years, Paige Tacey has dutifully made her rent payments, most recently $795 a month. But in April, the 27-year-old was able to kiss renting goodbye, maybe for good. She purchased a $126,000 two-bedroom row home in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood—a nice place with a lower monthly nut than she was forking over to her landlord.
And here’s the thing: She did it solo.
“I decided I was going to be in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future. So it seemed like a good time to buy a home,” says Tacey, who works in adoption recruitment. “Rent just keeps going up. This just felt like the right decision.”
Tacey isn’t alone. As more Americans are waiting longer to couple up, finding themselves divorced or widowed, or just skipping the prospect of connubial bliss altogether, the number of single home buyers is on the rise.
The numbers help tell the tale: In 1960, one-person households made up 13% of U.S. households; by 1990 that figure was 24.6%, and hit 27.9% as of last year. (The actual number of singles is higher, since these figures don’t include single parents with kids.)
Americans are simply putting off tying the knot later. In 2017, women were a median 27.4 years old when they said “I do,” according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data; those ages have gone up 2 years over the past decade.
But beware, singletons: Buying a home on your own is easier said than done. Lofty down payments and list prices make it a challenge on one income. So realtor.com® figured out the best places for the unattached to become homeowners, calculating the markets with high rates of solo buyers and single populations—and that have plenty of fun things going on.
“Homeownership isn’t just for couples,” insists Roger Ma, a certified financial planner at lifelaidout and New York City–based real estate agent.
We analyzed a variety of data in the 100 largest metropolitan areas,* measuring the following:
The share of mortgages taken out by home buyers who aren’t married over the past 12 months, according to mortgage processor Ellie Mae.
The share of one-person (single) households, according to Nielsen.
And fun stuff: The number of social clubs, dance clubs, sports bars, gay clubs, karaoke bars, nightlife venues, adult sports teams, hiking businesses, and gyms per capita, according to Yelp.com.
OK? So ditch the married friends (for now), and let’s take a grand tour of the best places for going at it alone!

But after the downturn of a decade ago, a number of these places were left vacant due to foreclosures. To keep the market from spiraling down, down, down, the city introduced programs to help both married and single home buyers.
Buy Springfield Now lowers closing costs for home buyers in the region. And the City of Springfield Office of Housing has a down payment assistance program for first-time buyers. Solo buyers can qualify if their income is below $45,200.
That’s a boon for single, 20-somethings who move to Springfield to work at big companies such as Mass Mutual and Baystate Health.
These folks often wind up buying three-bedroom Colonial and Cape Cod homes in the suburbs once they realize they can get them for between $150,000 and $180,000, says Tracy Viola, a broker at Thompson Real Estate Group. Some employers in the region even offer employees 0% interest loans for down payment and closing costs.
“You can get a good-sized house with some land for an amazing price in Springfield,” Viola says.
Singles scoop: Those looking for some adrenalized thrills along with their ardor can take their dates to Six Flags New England. And if you hit up Nathan Bill’s Bar & Restaurant’s trivia night, remember that children’s book author Dr. Seuss was born and raised in Springfield. (It’ll come up, trust us.)
2. Cleveland, OH
Median list price: $181,600 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 48.8%

The family-oriented Midwest isn’t the first place that comes to mind for singles. But Cleveland bucks the trend, with nearly 50% of mortgages going to the unattached. And the city responds in kind, offering everything from gay happy hours to an array of speed dating options.
When it comes to real estate, buyers can qualify for a home with even a modest salary. Home prices are far below the national median of $299,000, according to recent realtor.com data. One-bedroom condos in prime downtown areas are in the $150,000 ballpark. Just check out this one-bedroom condo in the Stonebridge Plaza priced at $164,900.
Singles scoop: If your date is a music lover, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (unless you’re a Radiohead fan—still not inducted!). Or take in a show at the Agora Theatre & Ballroom, where recent headliners include The Flaming Lips and Cat Power.
3. New Haven, CT
Median list price: $279,100 Share of mortgages taken out by singles:  52.4%
New Haven, CT

As the home of Yale University, New Haven has a mix of college students, research fellows, and academic types who contribute to the ever-shifting population. And it explains why there are so many bars, restaurants, and nightlife options in this small city.
It also helps clarify why so many folks here are unattached. When it comes to home buying, these folks have plenty of options, including Colonials for under $150,000 right in the city, and 1,000-square-foot condos for around $100,000.
“The great thing about New Haven is that it’s centrally located along the shoreline. You can get anywhere in the state in an hour and half,” says Ronnie Ann Ryan, dating coach at Never Too Late for Love. And “there’s an endless variety of things you can do for dates.”
Singles scoop: Still, those looking for a cheap date may want to head to the New Haven Ninth Square District. The historic part of downtown is great for a scenic stroll through buildings and top-notch people watching.
4. Buffalo, NY
Median list price: $190,000 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 46.2%
Bustling downtown Buffalo
Jacek_Sopotnicki/iStock
Buffalo has seen a resurgence of sorts after decades of manufacturing job and population losses. But that spate of recent development, which includes $24 million in planned improvements by the waterfront, haven’t resulted in pricey homes.
At least not yet.
“The main reason people are [buying] solo is they realize it’s a good economic move,” says Ryan Connolly, an associate broker with Re/Max North in the Buffalo region. Perennial NFL woes aside, Buffalo believers contend that there’s a big future for their city.
Many of these buyers are getting older homes that need a bit of work in walkable neighborhoods like Elmwood Village and North Buffalo, which boast lots of restaurants and shops. Savvy buyers are scoring abodes in these communities in the $200,000 to $300,000 range and then renting out bedrooms to friends to help cover their mortgages. If they get hitched, they sell the homes for a profit or use it as a rental home, Connolly says.
Singles scoop: Bars don’t close until 4 a.m. So. Get. The. Party. Started.
5. Albuquerque, NM
Median list price: $252,100 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 51.3%
Balloon ride for one please…

There aren’t just a lot of millennial buyers in Albuquerque. There are also quite a few members of Generation Z, born in 1997 or later, who are snapping up homes. (Feel old yet?) About 10% of real estate agent John Lopez‘s clients are under the age of 25. Those are some real estate–savvy whipper snappers!
“Albuquerque is so affordable you can buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom [home] with a two-car garage and large backyard in the middle of town for $185,000,” says Lopez, who’s with Coldwell Banker Legacy. “And the house will be less than 15 years old.”
Lopez also works with a lot of folks in their mid-30s who have been recently divorced. They typically want homes in master-planned communities that come with their own schools and parks. These homes tend to go for between $180,000 and $230,000.
Singles scoop: Could anything be more romantic than a “Breaking Bad” tour? Check out some of the Albuquerque-based show’s more distinctive locales, from Jesse Pinkham’s house to the original Los Pollos Hermanos (it’s actually a fast-food joint called Twisters—sorry).
6. Detroit, MI
Median list price: $255,000 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 49.5%
Detroit! It’s nice!
Davel5957/iStock
A revitalized downtown and a host of new employers moving in have encouraged lots of folks who grew up in Detroit to move back. Their return has added a spark to the singles scene—and housing market—of Motor City.
Many of these one-income buyers are interested in the former industrial buildings that are being converted into surprisingly chic condos and lofts. They typically run around $300,000 and often boast features like high ceilings and granite countertops.
This increase in demand has led to a number of new condos popping up in downtown. For example, the Selden is a 12-unit condo building that opened last year. It offers two-bedroom units costing around $450,000.
Singles scoop: The culinary-inclined can impress their dates with a cooking class at the Cornwall Bakery, where you can learn to make pastries and pizza, or the Mirepoix Cooking School where you can go nuts with heirloom tomatoes.
7. Providence, RI
Median list price: $350,000 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 49.6%
Downtown Providence

Many of the single buyers in Rhode Island’s capital are graduate and medical students at local institutions like Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. They’ve found that, in some cases, homeowning just makes more financial sense.
“They [plan to] sell afterward,” once they have their degrees, says local real estate agent Robert Rutley of Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty. “But some become so enthralled with Providence they end up staying.”
He has other buyers who buy in Providence and commute to work during the week in much-pricier Boston. An Acela train between the cities is only about a half-hour. The median list price in the Boston metro area is $519,950—about $170,000 more than in Providence!
Condos are particularly high in demand for single buyers in their 20s and 30s. A slew of historic buildings have been transformed and subdivided into the popular units.
Singles scoop: Altruistic singles can sign up for dog-walking volunteer shifts at the Providence Animal Rescue League. You’ll be guaranteed some smooches—even if your puppy love comes from an actual puppy.
8. Pittsburgh, PA
Median list price: $180,100 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 43.8%
Pittsburgh
SeanPavonePhoto/iStock
An influx of tech jobs from companies such as Uber and Amazon have brought lots of singles to the region from exorbitant places like San Francisco and Washington, DC. Once they arrive, they are met with sticker shock (the good type), spurring many to buy homes in historic neighborhoods on the upswing.
Brighton Heights, which is around 15 minutes from downtown, has a number of inexpensive three- and four-bedroom homes, which have been remodeled in recent years, says Bobby West, a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker in Pittsburgh.
“A lot of people in the tech industry and students who finished up graduate school at colleges in Pittsburgh are buying up homes here,” West says. “Many are shocked when I tell them their monthly [mortgage] payment will be lower than their rent.”
Singles scoop: This has become a seriously hip place. One-of-a-kind craft cocktails? Debauched party scenes? Cool used-vinyl stores? Check, check, and check.
9. Louisville, KY
Median list price: $250,000 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 48%
Go get ’em, slugger.

In the Bluegrass State, nothing says romance more than taking your date to the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, and watching horses race while donning your most obnoxious floppy hat. And regardless of what you may have heard, mint juleps are delicious.
But Louisville singles don’t have to win a trifecta to afford a roof over their heads. The market here is packed with homes priced between $150,000 to $250,000. There are even down payment assistance programs for those making under $40,050 a year.
Singles can nab three-bedroom, two-bath homes in subdivisions or historic homes in walkable neighborhoods like Germantown.
Singles scoop:  Watch what you say—the fastest way to end a date here is finding out your would-be love connection is on the wrong side of the fevered University of Kentucky versus University of Louisville basketball rivalry. (Go, Wildcats!)
10. Milwaukee, WI
Median list price: $259,100 Share of mortgages taken out by singles: 44.9%
Milwaukee, “the good land”
Davel5957/iStock
Social worker Ann Bausch, 36, was tired of being at the mercy of her landlord’s rent hikes. So in July she bought a one-bedroom, loft-style condo in a renovated former shoe factory for $146,500. Located in the Riverwest neighborhood, the condo is also within walking distance of great breweries and brunch spots.
“If you want a home, you don’t have to wait on a man,” says Bausch. “Don’t worry about the next thing on your list.”
Local real estate agent Beth Jaworski sees more solo women than single male buyers. They’re a mix of lawyers, doctors, and sales professionals.
“A lot of single women I work with are buying in the city,” says Jaworski, who’s with Shorewest Realtors. “They want to be near downtown where the action is. Or [they’re] buying in the nearby suburbs where they can have a yard for their dog.”
Singles scoop: Milwaukee is home to the Miller Brewing Co. and the birthplace of Pabst Blue Ribbon. So bottoms up!

It’s a Match! The 10 Best Cities for Singles to Live, Play—and Buy a Home

If you’re a gamer, there’s lots to be excited about in 2018. We’re expecting to see a number of great titles from well-known developers like Ubisoft, Telltale Games, and Niantic Labs.
Here are ten upcoming games we’re most excited about. The games fall into different categories like adventure, action, and racing, so there should be something in there for everyone.
1. Tom Clancy’s ShadowBreak
In this game you step into the shoes of a tactical commander in the ShadowBreak squad composed of military specialists from across the globe. Assemble a team and take down enemies by crafting different strategies.
You can engage in real-time PvP battles, provide overwatch as you deploy your unit to attack your opponent’s bases, and much more.
The game is packed with features to help you achieve goals faster and easier. You can upgrade your weapons, unlock unique gun perks, and collect as well as upgrade unique modern military operators, among other things.
Tom Clancy’s ShadowBreak is already available, but only in a handful of countries — it hasn’t been released in the U.S. and a lot of other major markets. It’s free to play, offers in-app purchases, and requires a network connection.
2. DC Unchained
In DC Unchained, you’ll visit locations including Gotham City and Metropolis to take on opponents as a member of the Justice League like Superman or Batman.
If that’s not your thing, you can follow the story of a villain like the Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, or Lex Luthor. You also have the option of assembling a dream team by joining the forces of heroes and villains.
The game isn’t officially out yet, but it is already listed on the Google Play Store and available for download. This allows the developer to get feedback from users and make changes to the game before it formally hits the market. It may be unstable though, so you’re likely better off waiting until DC Unchained officially launches.
3. GRID: Autosport
10 best car games for Android
There are a bunch of different types of car games. Some are simulations, others are racing games, and others still are puzzle games. The topic grew rather quickly on mobile. Racing games especially have some …
The upcoming GRID: Autosport is a racing game featuring over 100 cars and tracks. You can choose between touch or tilt controls and set the difficulty level from super-easy to ultra-realistic, depending on your skills.
There’s an extensive career mode available that allows you to recruit new members to your team and get sponsors on board in addition to racing.
The game is already available for iOS devices and is coming to Android sometime in the first half of this year. A more specific time frame has not been given.
4. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlefield
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, an online Battle Royale-style shooter, became the breakout gaming hit on PC and Xbox One last year. Tencent is bringing the game to mobile devices soon, called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: Battlefield.
The game takes place on an island, where you compete with other players after jumping out of an airplane. Once you hit the ground, you have to find weapons and start taking down your opponents quick. The last man standing wins.
The game will first be released in China, although a specific time frame has not been revealed yet.
5. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite
Niantic Labs, the developer behind the popular Pokemon GO, is working on a new title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. The upcoming AR game is being developed in partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and will let players “learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”
No other details are known about the game at this point. But based on the success of the company’s previous titles and the popularity of Harry Potter, it could be a smash hit.
No word on an exact release date yet, but you can sign up on the official website of the game to get notified when it launches.
6. The Walking Dead: The Final Season
The fourth and final season of the extremely popular The Walking Dead series will be released sometime this year too. Developer Telltale hasn’t shared a lot of details about the game, but it did mention Clementine will be in the lead role.
10 best Android horror games
When we first wrote this article a few years ago, the horror games genre wasn’t great. There were a few good ones. However, the quality deteriorated quickly after that. The last couple of years have …
The third season — A New Frontier — ended with Clementine going out to look for AJ. In the last season, the story will revolve around what happens when she finds him. According to the developer, players will also be able to shape Clementine’s future by making decisions about who she wants to be, who she wants to be with, and more.
Unfortunately, there’s no word on when exactly the game will be released. To learn more about it, check out Telltale’s summer update video above.
7. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition Preview
Square Enix describes this game as “an all-new adventure that retells the beloved story of Final Fantasy XV.” It will have an all-new art style with touch-based controls, though it appears to have all the same mechanics as the console version.
The story goes like this: After years of fighting, the nations of Lucis and Niflheim agree to a truce. As a symbol of peace between the two, Noctis, the crown prince of Lucis, is to marry the Lady Lunafreya of Tenebrae. You step into the shoes of the prince, who sets off for his wedding on the eve of the signing ceremony. To get there, he has to overcome many dangerous challenges.

8. Tekken
Tekken is a classic fighting game to get your blood pumping. Its Story Mode lets you take on the role of legendary fighter Kazuya Mishima and battle your way through a map-based campaign. You can also try out the Dojo Challenge, where you have to build a team and compete against friends and other players around the world online.
There are over 20 characters available to collect in Tekken, and each has a unique fighting style. You can also upgrade and unlock more than 20 special moves for each character to take your fighting game to the next level.
To play the game once it is released, you’ll need a decently powerful smartphone though. It requires an Exynos 8890/Snapdragon 820 chipset or higher under the hood along with at least 2 GB of RAM.
The launch date has not been revealed yet, but the game is already listed on the Play Store where you can pre-register. Hit the button below if you’re interested.
9. Black Desert Mobile
Black Desert Mobile is an open world action game. Its story revolves around the Kingdom of Valencia and the Republic of Calpheon, which are fighting over Black Stones — magic artifacts that increase the power of armor or weapons.
You have to complete various quests and take down a number of enemies. As you progress through the game, your character receives experience points that increase their fighting power and allow you to fight more powerful opponents.
There are five characters, seven battle modes, and various lifestyle activities, like mining, logging, and fishing available in the game.
Black Desert Mobile is expected to launch sometime this month, though only in South Korea — the developer’s home country — at first. Check out the trailer above to see what the game looks like in action.
10. PayDay: Crime War
Already a popular first-person shooter on PCs and consoles, Payday is coming to Android. Payday Crime War is a multiplayer, team PvP title, where two teams go head to head with different goals. One team takes on the role of criminals trying to perform a robbery, while the other steps into the shoes of a SWAT team trying to prevent the crime.
Up to eight players can take part in a match, which can take place in different locations. As you progress through the game, you can get new weapons and additional abilities to step up your game.
Developer Overkill Software has set up a website for the upcoming game, claiming it’s “coming soon to mobile.” An exact date has not been shared with the public yet.
These are the some of best upcoming Android games to keep an eye out for, although we’re sure plenty of other interesting titles will make their debut this year. Have we missed any major ones? Let us know in the comments.

The 8 weirdest things about Ole Miss’ Hugh Freeze era, now that it’s done
What the hell was that?
Hugh Freeze is out as Ole Miss’ head coach, done in by a combination of the NCAA, Houston Nutt, and call(s) to an escort service on his work phone, but technically only the last part. His final record at his hometown school is 39-25, with three bowl wins and a top-10 finish, but that tells almost none of it.
Let’s work our way from the pretty weird start of all this to the cosmically outlandish conclusion.
8. His résumé. We’re used to it by this point, but it’s important to let yourself be baffled by it all over again. Before landing a job in a conference that was amid a national title streak, Freeze had coached high school teams in various sports, been an Ole Miss assistant for two years, coached an NAIA program that no longer exists, and coached at the Sun Belt’s Arkansas State for two years.
And then POOF! SEC head coach.
“Did you really win four state high school girls basketball championships?” a reporter asked in front of 1,000 people at 2013 SEC Media Days, apparently refusing to believe Wikipedia’s claims. “If so, what is your key to winning championships in basketball, high school football, and your pursuit of an SEC title?”
7. Not exactly what brought him down — SEC West coaches get fired for lewd behavior all the time! — but the setup for it: the public character he’d cultivated of a deeply religious family man.
The listed cause of firing is the escort service: “a failure of character standards for a head coach.” It’s not the NCAA. Of course, Ole Miss is invested in emphasizing the former, as the latter still looms.
Maybe Freeze could’ve maneuvered past the escort service call(s). Hell, probably! This is college football! If it occurred in a vacuum, I think he survives. (“Common” doesn’t begin to quantify the infidelity rumors I hear among coaches.)
But not alongside an NCAA investigation.
And not transposed against his public persona of the archetypical Evangelical Christian, which drove his critics in the industry and the media absolutely mad. His ceaseless proselytizing in defense of his character was at times such a gratuitous, repetitive tic that it invited other Christians, myself included, to sin by doubting its validity. Such is the failing of faith as a commodity.
This one doesn’t rank all that highly, because we’ve seen sanctimony end in horny scandal plenty of times before.
6. His teams were unfathomably hard to predict from week to week, even as they steadily improved. Back-to-back ranked wins! A 30-0 loss to Arkansas. A win in Tuscaloosa! A 38-10 loss to Florida. A 28-6 start against Florida State! A 39-6 finish by Florida State.
Freeze’s Rebels soared to No. 3 rankings in two different seasons, the only times they’ve been that high since the SEC integrated. Freeze is responsible for two of Ole Miss’ very few chances to smile on a national stage, and one of those ended in sputtering tears, thanks to a 39-point Peach Bowl loss to TCU.
All along, they were pretty good, no matter how hard it was to convince onlookers. A common joke in 2016: Ole Miss is the best four-loss team in the country. Wait, it’s now the best five-loss team in the country. Wait ...
5. He publicly egged on the NCAA. His 2013 recruiting class formed the bulk of his on-the-job legacy, for good and ill. Its star players helped contribute to some of Ole Miss’ greatest moments ever.
But the lil ole Rebels landing commitments from five-stars? That turned a few too many heads. It was a staggering turnaround in the recruiting rankings, and Freeze felt led to tweet the following:
If you have facts about a violation, send it to [email protected]. If not, please do not slander these young men or insult their family
He later said he regretted doing that, which is good, because it was actually not smart.
4. The NCAA stuff has to go somewhere, so sure. Fourth is fine. None of the accusations are all that spicy in isolation, but racking up 15 Level I (the most serious kind) allegations is impressive regardless. Freeze’s regime, with some help from Nutt’s, produced a bowl ban, and that’s just Ole Miss’ penance punishment. The NCAA has yet to go in.
Three especially weird things about it:
If a few nights along the way go differently, the Rebels probably would’ve gotten off with wrist slaps. No. 1 2013 recruit Robert Nkemdiche might’ve joined his brother in Oxford no matter what, and the NCAA turned up basically nothing on the other star 2013 signees ... other than Laremy Tunsil, thanks to a falling out with his eager-to-snitch stepfather. The NCAA based a lot of its findings off of that testimony.
That NFL draft night, when Tunsil was hacked and seemingly admitted to taking money from coaches? The NCAA didn’t even make any allegations based specifically off that, though it did extend investigations.
Freeze is gone because of non-NCAA stuff anyway. The whole mess is still there for somebody else to clean up.
Also, Nutt is suing Ole Miss, accusing Freeze and the school of tricking the media into blaming Nutt for the NCAA stuff, thereby costing Nutt coaching jobs. That’s dubious, but let’s check back on this plot line in a few.
Finally, never forget one of Freeze’s last public acts as Ole Miss’ head coach was filibustering for a punter-filled 16 minutes at SEC Media Days, to avoid questions about the NCAA and Nutt.
3. He beat Nick Saban twice in a row. Saban rarely loses. He’s lost exactly 19 games in his decade at Alabama.
Saban almost never loses to the same opponent more than once. Exactly two remaining head coaches (Urban Meyer and Mark Richt) have beaten him twice or more.
Saban basically never loses to the same opponent more than once in a row. His numbers in revenge games are hilarious.
Saban’s school just doesn’t lose to Freeze’s. Bama’s record against Ole Miss until 2014 was 47-9-2.
And yet we found those goal posts out on the streets of Oxford.
And then Freeze’s Rebels went and did it again, this time in Saban’s own stadium.
2. The fact that the gas mask thing isn’t the weirdest thing on this list. I mean, if this image isn’t your No. 1 ...
Laremy Tunsil's NFL stock was sabotaged minutes before the 2016 draft. Here's what we've learned since:https://t.co/6csUMkuXlA
— SB Nation (@SBNation) April 26, 2017
... you must have a hell of a No. 1.
1. PETTY GOD HOUSTON NUTT’S SHAKESPEAREAN REVENGE. This part alone is instantly one of the greatest college football stories of all time, and I say that with full reverence for the entire libraries of stupidity this sport generates per decade.
At the heart of the reason Freeze stepped down is a phone call.
Freeze told Yahoo last Friday that the call had been brought to Ole Miss administrators’ attention by former coach Houston Nutt’s attorney, Thomas Mars, and that they had questioned him about it. Freeze told Yahoo he had no idea why the call was on his phone records.
USA Today reported that Nutt’s attorney, Thomas Mars, contacted Ole Miss to inform the school that Nutt’s camp had the morsel.
Mars sent an email to Lee Tyner, the school’s general counsel, referencing a “phone call Coach Freeze made that would be highly embarrassing for all of you and extremely difficult to explain.”
The irony: Nutt’s downfall at Arkansas a decade prior was almost the same situation. Just replace the vengeful coach with unhappy fans. Also, no one found any escort services.
A series of records requests preceded Nutt’s departure from Arkansas in 2007. One request, for Nutt’s cell phone records, revealed more than 2,000 texts between the coach and a local news anchor. Rumors circulated that Nutt was having an affair, which he denied. Nutt ended up leaving Arkansas for Ole Miss, days after shocking No. 1 LSU.
The widely mocked Houston Nutt ended up orchestrating his successor’s downfall, all via the same bizarre method that’d cost Nutt a job 10 years prior. I wish I knew how to write well enough to express just how perfectly bananas this is. I can’t believe this happened.
What else was there? Throw it in below.
