Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.

The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!

Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much. If you count “FX on Hulu” as Hulu then June 17 sees the arrival of Dave season 2. Dave was one of TV’s best surprises last year and it’s nice to have it back.

After those two, it’s just a bunch of library titles. Thankfully, those library titles are fairly intriguing. Arachnophobia, The Dark Knight, Kick-Ass, and Slumdog Millionaire all premiere on June 1. Willy’s Wonderland, featuring Nic Cage’s battle against animatronic puppets, arrives on June 13.

2019

It seems impossible that I was offered a job eight months ago, that I moved in with Eddy four months ago, that the end of 2019 is already here. Post-college years continue to speed by at an alarming pace.

It was a good year, though, and I was especially grateful for all the unique opportunities I had to travel--to Switzerland and Italy, Saratoga Springs, Provincetown. I went up to New York for the last weekend in June, and spent two magical autumn weekends in the woods--Vermont in October, New Hampshire in November.

I made friends with a sweet fluffy homebody, and I took still more steps toward building a satisfying, adult life for myself. I was in Houston last week, and felt more peace there than I’ve been able to find in a long time. I think part of it is that I finally feel secure and stable in my life in Boston--I finished school, found a permanent job that I love--and so I’m able to “visit” without any underlying anxiety about my precarious position in life.

Books

It was a really good year for books--no pictures because many of them were library books but here’s the list of favorites:

Caroline by Sarah Miller

This is a retelling of Little House on the Prairie from the perspective of Laura’s Ma. The author was inspired to write it after realizing that, although Laura changes the timeline in her fictional retellings, Ma had actually been pregnant with Baby Carrie during their journey from Wisconsin to Kansas. It’s the kind of historical fiction I have always wanted, covering the unique hardships of pioneer life for women and including details like the oilcloth rags Caroline prepared to line her underwear after Carrie’s birth, and her swollen breasts bouncing painfully in the wagon after she leaves the top two hooks of her corset open.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

I’ve watched Hank’s videos for years, and I loved his debut novel about navigating unexpected fame and the responsibilities of having an audience through the perspective of a young woman in her 20s. Also, it’s really, really funny.

The Signature of All Things by Liz Gilbert

I . . . adored this book. And I’ve definitely recommended it the absolute most of any book I’ve read this year. It has the voice and the humor and the warmth and the wisdom I’d expect from Liz Gilbert, as well as an exhaustively researched and utterly immersive period setting (19th century Philadelphia). It truly feels epic in scope, and if I try to describe it for too long I sound like a lunatic but it’s about botany and about sexual longing and I think about it every single day.

City of Girls by Liz Gilbert

I was fortunate enough hear Liz talk about this book in person when she went on tour! See the above--this book is amazingly funny and wise and smart and just so fun to read. It’s about showgirls in New York in the 1940s. (On tour, Liz talked about interviewing a bunch of nonagenarian former showgirls for research and wondering beforehand, “Oh God, how am I going to get these grandmotherly old ladies to talk about sex?” and then wondering after, “Oh god, how am I going to get these ladies to talk about anything other than sex?”)

Circe by Madeline Miller

This book is so precious to me. Madeline Miller’s take on Circe is the best rendering of a divine/immortal character as narrator that I’ve ever read. And she does it in first-person. Also, if you ever have an opportunity to hear this author speak publicly, you should take it. She is so smart and well-read, and so steeped in this mythology, and strikes an amazing and refreshing balance between reverence and irreverence for the source material (when writing for the character of Medea, for example, she explained that she was having difficulty understanding her, “until I realized what a bozo Jason was”).

Dune by Frank Herbert

Haha. I read the first four books of this classic sci-fi series this year alongside Eddy. The weirdness chart for this series is an exponential curve and I found the fourth book so deeply weird as to be borderline unreadable, but all of them are special and the first one, in particular, sticks in your brain.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

I’ve been waiting for the author of The Night Circus to publish a new book for a long time, and this one was worth the wait. I love love love Erin Morgenstern’s eye for details and aesthetics, and the way she builds story around setting.

Television

I watched and enjoyed more TV shows in 2019 than any year in recent memory, but I think it's partly just the alignment of streaming service releases and my taste than any other factor. Eddy and I finished watching FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood at the beginning of this year. There was one weekend in May where all I did was watch Good Omens and bake a rhubarb cake (both very good). I binged all of Fleabag in two days and then I made Eddy watch it, and we're both completely captivated by it. July 5 was officially "Stranger Things Day", and Danielle, Eddy, and I woke up at 9 am, ate donuts, and watched the entire new season in one day (and then went to Veggie Galaxy for emotional recovery). The third season of The Crown dropped a few weeks ago and I spiraled even further into my Olivia Colman obsession, and Eddy and I finished the first season of The Good Place right before we left town for the holidays.

Movies

My movie-watching has declined significantly since I graduated and left behind my Film Boy pals, but I managed a short list of favorites: I adored BOOKSMART, and it immediately jumped to the special place in my heart where coming-of-age stories about smart young women live. I watched THE FAVORITE on a plane and it was fantastic. And then a few nights ago Danielle and I went to see the new Greta Gerwig-directed LITTLE WOMEN and predictably adored it, and it was basically the highlight of my trip home. But I didn't see much in theaters, and I don't feel like I missed out.

Games

Another surprise for me this year was how many games I played and enjoyed. I grew up playing video games and watching my siblings play, but when I moved to Boston for college all I had was a 3DS, and my consumption of games, with the noticeable exceptions of Stardew Valley and Pokémon Go, went into hibernation. That all changed this year, when Eddy bought me a Nintendo Switch for my birthday, and I spent January playing many blissful hours of Let’s Go Pikachu. Other favorites include:

OXENFREE - Branching storylines! Choose-your-own-adventure sans cutscenes so that it all feels totally immersive and high-stakes! And a creepy, existential, Arrival-esque mystery to boot.

THE FLAME IN THE FLOOD - All of my favorite books growing up were about kids who run away to live in the woods à la My Side of the Mountain, so this post-apocalypse survival adventure story featuring our hero, Scout, brewing dandelion tea to cure her snakebites, making snares out of saplings, and using cattail tubers to make braided cord was right in my wheelhouse.

The Commodification of Recklessness: Bam Margera and His Struggle to Remain a Pop Culture Icon in the New Media Age

“Celebrity is an acknowledgment of the public’s power. Indeed, the celebrity is in many ways the embodiment of the collective power of an invested audience in a particular person.” - P. David Marshall

Bam Margera’s Instagram account is a dystopian nightmare. Posts detailing his inner turmoil and downward spiral are interspersed with scheduled marketing ploys to purchase items from his custom jewelry line. It is a confusing and worrying juxtaposition of themes. It’s also a disturbing look at the commodification of celebrity culture, and there’s a huge dialogue in the background of Margera’s chaos about banking in on recklessness, packaging it up with some slick branding and design and selling it to the masses, pointing at one individual saying, “This is how you make your living — now keep it up.”

America’s favorite modern-day daredevil marked his beginnings by brandishing a camera and filming his friends and family. What would later become the CKY series of films and footage started simply as pure home movies. Crude and enormously personal, they were just the spark of Margera’s work as a content creator in the pre-Internet Age. Now, his scramble to keep up in the new age of media consumption is more visible than ever. For someone who has made it their livelihood to film and share every outrageous thing to ever happen to them, it’s not shocking to witness Margera’s extremely public mental breakdown on social media for his 1.8 million followers to comment on.

Margera was raised in a frugal household. His mother April was a hairdresser and his father Phil was a baker at the local supermarket. There was no way anyone could have predicted that the small-town Pennsylvania suburbia boy would ascend to super-stardom as a professional skateboarder, reality tv personality, and a total lifestyle brand in and of himself. His talents in the world of extreme sports and filmmaking fell to the wayside in his lucrative career's later years; his marketable personality and obsessive need to have good stories to tell became more important.

In the 2000s, Margera’s touch turned media and product into consumable gold. Name that item: there’s a 99% chance you can search for it on eBay with his name attached and it emerges in the results like an ancient relic that was bought and sold in large quantities on the Silk Road of the internet. His reach in mainstream media was immeasurable — a household name with a DIY ethic that had been consumed by profit-hungry hands overnight.

Bits and pieces of CKY were included in the Jackass films and shows, giving Bam Margera’s handy work a much larger platform and sending his lifestyle brand into mainstream territory. Later, MTV picked up the Jackass spinoff Viva La Bam with tremendous bags of money in tow. Margera was raking in tens of millions with a generous budget of $300,000 per episode, not even including his sponsorship salaries from his professional skateboarding career. Managers, publicists, agents, marketers, entertainment bookers, and other media professionals suddenly took notice and it was all hands on deck: how can we profit off of (and exploit) this person?

Radio Bam, Margera’s own radio talk show on Sirius XM, displayed colorfully all of the nooks and crannies of the man’s career. Discussions detailed his personal life, his weekly goings-and-doings, and his evolution as a public figure in the pop culture spotlight. At its inception, the recording room sounded packed to the ceiling with “the crew” and a laundry list of rockstar guests. By the time the show had been canceled, it was devastatingly quiet and interspersed with extremely shady characters and hangers-on with no real purpose — “depressing” doesn’t even begin to cover it. The tide of fun and bright ideas had turned.

The pressure to remain relevant and remunerative took on a new face and form. Celebrity culture and the stress of living up to previously met peak expectations materialized with the hope of staying pertinent. This is when one is confronted with two vastly different scenarios: 1. Stay “safe" and do the same things you’ve always done to make a living (by recklessly making every moment a new story to tell later, diving headfirst into alcohol and drugs, and keeping up with the brand and messaging you have been pushing during your peak), or 2. Settling down into niche obscurity with a smaller, cult-like fanbase supporting your artistic endeavors, without the glitz and glamor of shock publicity and tabloid features.

Margera’s tagline has famously been, “What will he do next? Whatever the fuck I want!” But what are the consequences of doing whatever the fuck you want? What happens when this attitude of reckless abandon and destruction turns to mass corporate profit and immediately turns inward, manifesting itself in the shape of an alcohol and drug addiction? I’d like to make it clear: I am not blaming Margera’s apparent mental illness and substance abuse on material greed at the hands of his very disorganized team of background marketers. I am, however, placing some blame on the society that built his fame — the obsession with timely content and the machine that pushes it, making every move a flash in the pan. On the contrary, it could be argued that Margera failed to keep up with the changing technological landscape, finding himself trapped in a time capsule rooted in the 2000s.

Of course, no one expected the honeymoon phase of kicking your friends in the balls to last very long. Margera’s colleagues Brandon Novak and Steveo were once in his shoes, teetering dangerously between life and death at the mercy of substance abuse. Both of them, by the grace of some miracle and with sheer will, broke their habits and went on to be successful, sober people. The first has dedicated his life to helping others find sobriety by partnering with a treatment center, while the second is a working comedian with a heart of gold, visiting animal sanctuaries and bringing awareness to endless volunteer opportunities. Margera, who has a wealth of knowledge in the world of filmmaking, directing, and editing, would do well to dedicate his time to good deeds such as say, going to a local middle school and offering up his film-smarts to students with a willingness to learn. It has the potential to be rewarding and I suspect it would take him back to his roots, reminding him of what made him and his work so special in the first place.

There are commercials interrupting Bam Margera’s very real mental breakdown. His marketing team, anonymous and squeaky clean in stark contrast to him, has access to his Instagram page. Not soon after he shares a video of himself mumbling and slurring over the lyrics to “Enter The Ninja” by Die Antwoord (a song chosen by him with an evident cry for help in mind) softly pulsing in the background, his hired marketing staff push a polished photo of a faceless, nameless person modeled after Bam himself showing off some shiny 3D printed rings at slashed prices and a link for where to buy them. Capitalism: meet agony.

Alcoholism and mental illness are the symptoms of a deeper, more severe disease within in Bam’s case. Celebrity culture, as appealing and normative as it may be, is a human falsity. The contradiction of it lies in the power of the audience. Stars like Bam Margera are marketed to be bigger and better than mere mortals like us. But when we remove the layers of advertising, marketing, publicity, and branding, we witness the ordinary human elements inside. These elements personified are not pretty, and they are often drunk.

Bam Margera is excessively normal; his existence equates to an obvious nod at what occurs in the face of societal pressure and a great yearning to be special and extraordinary. As this essay is penned, Margera’s Instagram account experiences a deep clean and problematic posts are deleted.

What will he do next? This time, it’s a mystery.
