Final Piece - 10 Objects That Represent A Memorial To Myself
The above is a photograph of my final installation presented as you would see in a museum. The black dots on the wall are numbered and represent each piece. Corresponding to the number, on the wall is written text explaining each object. In addition, there is a playlist of Desert Island Discs, 12 pieces of music selected to evoke a particle memory or period of my life. This was playing in the background when I presented my piece.

I collected soil, leaves, branches and some moss from the forest. First I was inspired by personal memories of being outside, in the woods. I thought that collecting actual objects from the forest is essential because of the scent. Scent is an important element of my project. The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses.
So I put everything in glass jar, as jars are used to preserve things, as the brain stores all our experiences, holding them until it is broken...
Then I thought of this jar not as a personal memory, more like a little sample of our natural environment preserved for the future. A future I imagine everything is man-made, there are no more forests, but metal, concrete, and plastic.

Twins? Margaret and her Friend Try to Fool Their Parents
"I had a best friend, Dortha [Evans]. Wherever we went strangers would ask us if we were twins because we both had blond hair and lots of freckles. One day, Dortha and I decided that the only way our families knew us was by our clothes, so we decided to exchange clothes. That evening, we went to each other's home for dinner. No one asked either of us about how come we changed clothes, but went right along with us. After dinner, we changed back to our own clothes again. It wasn't until sometime later that we realized that we hadn't fooled anyone.

Looking at maps I traced a road map of the area around Gloucester where I used to live when I was working first. I tried mono printing as I had been looking at Tracey Emin’s work and Louise Bourgeois and they both used the technique in their work. I have always liked printing and thought a map would work well with this technique. It was quite time consuming and had to have a few attempts before I got anything reasonable.

I repeated the process using the place name as a mirror image in clay and then poured plaster in. I added a large amount of plaster making the plaque quite thick so it is a little heavy but worked well.

I think my earliest memory is of sitting on a chair holding my favourite toy. Is it a real memory or just reinforced by the photograph that recorded the event.

3D MEMORY
I started by looking at the idea of Memorial. Thinking about all the people that have meant something to me who have died over a timeline. This lead me to think about specific memories of specific people, for example, for me when I think of my Auntie Olive I think of the song she always sang called Barefoot Days. Every year we went to Dundee to visit my relatives and we would have a singsong where everyone had to do a piece. That was her song.
When I think of my dad I think of him painting my fence in the freezing cold in January as we moved into our new home on December 15th 1998. It hasn’t been painted since. He was in the Navy and I think of this cream polo neck thick woollen jumper he had when he first joined the Navy and went on a ship in the north of Scotland. He was an Ophthalmologist so when I have my eyes tested I think of him. Seeing the equipment in the room, the glasses that were loaded with different lenses to test your eyesight, the eye torch he gave me, a freebie from a pharmaceutical company that I use to look into my children ears and throat when they complain of pain. All these objects remind me of him. Even watching Citizen Khan - he would have loved it and I can hear his laughter ringing in my ears.
