[NEWS] [COLLEGE] OJT hours increased to 300
Incoming Business Economics, Financial Management, and Human Resource Development Management seniors are now required to take on-the-job-training (OJT) program of 300 hours instead of 200 staring this summer vacation.
According to Practicum Coordinator Professor Helena Ma. F. Cabrera, the increase in the OJT hours is a consensus of the department chairs and the practicum advisers. During a closed-door meeting, the topic concerning the increase in OJT hours was brought up due to the observations of the department chairs that the students are not spending ample amount of time during their OJTs.“Mukhang kulang yung natutunan nila sa 200 hours lang, and for better exposure din naman,” said Professor Cabrera. She also mentioned that the companies where the students are doing their OJTs are saying that the hours are lacking “Kasi daw, pagdating ng estudyante aalis na agad. So parang dating-alis dating-alis lang yung 200 hours.”
The increase in hours is favorable to the students because they will have longer periods of hours in the job. This will provide them better mastery of their future work in companies. Furthermore, the increase in hours will provide the company more time to observe the students which will equal to the students’ gain on the possibility that they may be absorbed by the company where they are doing their OJTs. Though there are benefits, the increase in hours will result to more expenses during the summer break. Even though the fees will still remain the same, the everyday fare to and from the company plus everyday food expenses of the students may increase as well.
Despite the increase in the OJT hours, the six units and the fee per unit of the OJT will be retained. Professor Cabrera added that the additional hours will maximize the fees that the students are paying and that it will help the students master their future jobs and that they may learn more from a first-hand experience.
Overall, the third year students are in favor of the amendment. According to Ruth Anne Maneja (3FM1), the increase in OJT hours “…will mean additional exposure for us [students] which will lead to more learning and developmental experiences.” Likewise, Kyza Catalla (3E3) added that “by increasing the number of hours, it'll give the students more opportunities to learn and experience the corporate world.”
