Crafting Timeless Elegance: Sola Wooden Flowers with Stems
Tumblr media
The fascinating world of sola wooden flowers with stems, which have roots in the verdant regions of Sri Lanka and India. The tapioca plant becomes a center stage as the source of this incredible floral craftsmanship here, in the lush splendor of these tropical locales. The inner bark of the tapioca plant, scientifically known as Aeschynomene aspera, is what makes up Sola wood blossoms. This inconspicuous bark goes through a detailed metamorphosis, being scraped into sheets that are as thin as air. These fragile sheets are expertly carved into a variety of exquisite designs that perfectly capture the essence of diverse flowers and their delicate petals. In the hands of trained artisans, these light sheets become the canvas for a diversity of artistic expressions.
How to Make Sola Wooden Flowers with Stems
With their natural beauty and eco-friendly appeal, sola wooden flowers with stems have won over craft lovers and event planners alike. Your flower arrangements get a new level of adaptability when branches are added to these delicate designs. If you want to have a fulfilling creative experience, learn how to make sola wood flowers with stems by following this step-by-step tutorial.
Materials required:
       Sola wood sheets
       Floral wire stems
       Wire cutters
       Water-based dye
       Foam brush
       Bowl of water
       Hot glue gun
Step 1: Petal shaping and cutting
Choose the ideal petal sizes and shapes from your sola wood sheets to make wooden flowers with stems. Online templates are available, or you may make your own. The shapes should be carefully cut out after being properly traced with a pencil on the wood sheets. To provide the look of being more natural and lifelike, vary the shapes and sizes.
Step 2: Petal coloring
Apply water-based color to the petals after wetting a foam brush. Use light strokes to evenly distribute the dye throughout the surface. Use several dye hues on different areas of each petal to create a gradient appearance. Before moving on to the following stage, let the petals completely dry.
Step 3: Petal shaping
When the petals are completely dry, it's time to add texture and dimension. Use your fingers to gently twist and shape the petals. By imitating the organic curves of actual flower petals, this phase gives the design a more realistic appearance.
Step 4: Creating the Flower Centre
A little piece of wooden flowers with stems should be rolled into a tight bud form.. This will act as the flower's center. To maintain the roll's form, add a little dab of hot glue. The basis for securing the petals will be provided by this center.
Step 5: Putting the Flower Together
Begin gluing the bigger petals to the center, gradually overlapping them as you go. Each petal's base should have a thin layer of hot glue applied to it before being pressed onto the center. In a circular pattern, keep adding petals, progressively reducing their size as you go outward. This stacking method mimics how a flower might naturally develop.
Step 6: affixing the stem
Cut a floral wire stem to the length that you want, allowing extra for insertion into the flower. After carefully inserting the floral wire, apply hot glue to the bottom of the flower's center. Till the glue hardens and the stem is firmly bonded, keep it in place.
Step 7: Sealing the Flower
Consider using a clear sealer to seal your completed flower for more longevity and a slight gloss. This process brings out the color of the petals and offers wear resistance.
Step 8: Take in Your Work of Art
Your wooden flowers with stems are prepared to shine now that the stalk is firmly in place. Admire your handiwork and think about making a bouquet or arrangement to display your artistic talents.
Making flowers out of sola wood that has stems is a fulfilling activity that blends imagination spurred by nature with practical skill. These permanent works of art may provide a timeless and sustainable touch of beauty to your special occasions, home décor, or activities.
Why Sola Wood Flower Wreath?
Sola wood flowers are a sustainable and environmentally beneficial alternative to fresh flowers or synthetic materials since they are made from the regenerated bark of the tapioca plant. Sola wood flower wreath keeps their look over time, unlike fresh flowers, which rapidly wilt and fade. Their usefulness and durability are increased by the addition of a stem. Sola wood flowers may be readily colored with water-based colors to produce a broad range of tones and hues, allowing for maximum personalization. It is possible to fit certain color schemes and design preferences thanks to this modification.
For artists, crafters, and DIY lovers, making sola wood flowers with stems provides a creative outlet. People may display their distinctive flair and originality by arranging and sculpting petals. Wood flower wreath may be incorporated into a wide variety of designs, from wreaths and bouquets to table centerpieces and wall art. They are ideal for a variety of locations and events because of their adaptability. Sola wood flowers are durable, which might result in cost savings over time, even if there may be an initial expenditure on equipment and materials. They are adaptable to many situations and events.
Tumblr media
Wood Flower Wreath Is Manageable, Arranged, and Transportable Due to Their Lightweight
This is especially useful when making more elaborate arrangements or working on larger setups. Unlike actual flowers, sola wood flowers don't discharge pollen or other allergies. They are, therefore, a fantastic option for anyone who has allergies or sensitivities. Compared to real flowers, which require water and careful handling, the wood flower wreath requires very little upkeep. Because of this, using them as event decorations is hassle-free.
Sola wood flowers may be saved as priceless mementos from memorable events like weddings or celebrations. They can act as permanent recollections of important occasions because of their durability. Unlike fresh flowers, sola wood flowers are always available. They may be made and utilized all year long, offering constant beauty for different occasions and seasons. Choosing a sola wood flower wreath over fresh cut flowers can help decrease the need for flower cultivation, which frequently entails water- and energy-intensive operations.

Borderlands Foam Wig Tutorial (Tyreen)
I was chatting with the lovely @void-noises-exe and it eventually circled around to offering to make a wig tutorial because you don’t see too terribly many, just thought I’d throw mine out ( especially because It was next to impossible to find good references of a foam version of Ty’s hair.) So this will be for foam wigs in general but Tyreen’s hair specifically (with a few pics of my Fiona wig from tales as well because they better accentuate my points) I didn’t plan on making this so I am missing a few pictures that might be helpful but here we go. This will not be short.
Supplies:
-Craft foam (ideally, in small and XL sheets, but you can make do with whatever size you have available)
- Spray paint as close to the BASE color of the wig you need (for Ty I used white, for Fiona a medium brown) ideally in a matte.
- a FUCKLOAD of paints (i use cheap acrylics from the craft store ) in Black, and then several shades of the colors in the hair. (For Fiona i used i think four browns? Tyreens shaved sides have three browns, and the top had an additional yellow-brown i mixed) try to vary them in darkness levels to add depth.
- multiple paint brushes. I like to use around four or five of varying sizes and hardness levels.
- plenty Hot glue, and a hot glue gun (note: you COULD use other typres of adhesive, I like hot glue because its got great hold on foam, it sets FAST and worst case scenario I can take a hair dryer to it and melt it again if I need something to be undone.)
- scissors
- duct tape
-plastic wrap
-sharpie
-wig head
-Plenty of reference images
(optional supplies include a rotary cutter and or exacto-knife [trust me, itll make your life so much easier] ,  and patience. )
SO to start
1) Put your hair in a wig cap or however you plan on wearing it under your wig. Wrap your whole hair bit of your head in plastic wrap. Make sure you get over your ears and the baby hairs on your neck if you want to keep them.
2) Wrap all the plastic covered bits in duct tape. This is easier for a friend to do on you, but not impossible to do alone, just make sure to get it all. It should be snug. Make sure you get as far down the back of your neck and down your sideburn area as you can. (Most characters have a bit of fringe hanging down in the back so its not the BIGGEST concern for them, but Ty’s got nada so you’re gonna want some good coverage for your hair line.)
3) Take your sharpie and draw an outline of where your ear is, and along the hairline you’d like your wig to have. For short haired characters you dont want to cut too far behind the ear or your hair will peek out, so I like to underestimate how big my ear is and adjust as needed later. Dont make your wig hairline too high either, particularly if you’re making a wig for a character who has no fringe in the front.
4) Take that bad boy off and cut along your outlines. Try it on again, adjust lines as needed. rinse and repeat.
5) once you reach a semi-accurate mold of your head, you’re gonna wanna take it off and cut AT LEAST 4 (front, back, and both sides (I like to do 8, it will lay flatter) sections, coming to a point at the crown of your head. It should come out looking something like this. NOTE : they’re all still connected in the middle. If you’re doing 8, cut each of these 4 in half. )
Tumblr media
6) Lay out your foam beneath this. If you dont have a piece of foam big enough to trace this bad boy onto, what I do is literally just break out the hot glue gun a bit early, glue a couple pieces together along the edges, until i get a nice big connected surface. Trace this guy on there as accurately as you can, cut it out, and then glue all your sides together. Now you should have a foam version of your duct tape hat.
Tumblr media
(Dont worry if the sides wont stay down, if you’re doing a character like Ty where thats an issue, we’ll get to that part later. )
7) (Optional but VERY helpful) Grab your wig head, and your duct tape head. Tape the duct tape back together and put something in it to make it hold shape, I use poly-fil. Tape the head-form to the wig head, and put your little foam cap on top of that.
8)  Time to get creative. You’re gonna want to start from the bottom layers first. For Tyreen that’s the long fringe and her undercut. The strategy I decided on was to take a few large rectangular strips of foam, and lay them out everywhere I wanted the undercut to be and cut along the edges to match the hairline. I don’t have a picture of this exact point in the process but I have one from the beginning of the next step. Really the only thing to note at this point is obviously, your head is round and rectangles are not, for the curves where it sticks up along the edges, cut down where it sticks up in a little triangle and hot glue the ends together (you can sort of see this at the top left in the picture below). Dont worry about seams at this point, we’ll hide them later.
Tumblr media
9) This was not the case for Fiona who has very flat hair ( especially because of her hat) but Tyreen has a lot of volume especially towards the front of her head. For hair pieces that need volume, such as the ones that are glued down here, cut two of the exact same foam piece (i like to do them in little waves like the side, but also just a little arch is good for volume without flips such as the front piece) and glue the matching edges together. Make sure the hair triangle is facing the way youd like it to! Then Flatten out the top as much as you can, the bottom will keep the volume and the top ill be able to be covered by “2D” hair pieces.
(NOTE: Honestly, it’s REALLY difficult to end up with an exact copy of cannon, and I ALLLLWAYS get carried away with the spikes. In the end, go by your reference images, but also follow your heart. Cosplay is half about having fun creating. )
10) Once youve started gluing, make sure to keep in mind where your part is (if you have one). For Fiona i didn’t trust myself so I glued in the hair at the part BEFORE anything, and left them ready to be glued down while I worked my way up to them.
Tumblr media
NOTE: All the hair at the parts of BOTH wigs is a single piece of foam. You want a nice wide base whenever possible to cover up the seams of all of the other edges of the hair. For your part, Carefully glue along the very end of your strip of foam and stick it down. It will be the last piece to be glueddown on top of everything else to make it look nice and clean.
11) Slowly start working your way around the head, gluing down first anything that will need to be covered (3D pieces and bottom pieces) before getting towards the top where youll need to be more strategic about what is going down and what can cover your edges. I’d definitely recommend mixing 2D and 3D pieces if that’s something you want to experiment with, otherwise, such as in the pic below, it is possible to get volume from a 2D piece, simply by gluing it in a way where it wont lie flat against the head.
Tumblr media
12) in the picture above you can also catch a glimpse of Ty’s cow lick. Those are done exactly the same as our 3D pieces from before, only you trace the edges of the open end, and should end up with a triangular third side to be glued in, then just glue along the edges just like the hair part.
13) Dont feel you have to overdo how many pieces the hair has, remember you may also paint in pieces and designs when it comes to the line-art!
14) Once you’ve added everything from the bottom that you’d like to, go ahead and glue down your hair-part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
15) So, obviously, I wasn’t a big fan of Tyreen’s undercut just being flat foam across half my head. So I took an exacto to it for what felt like years. REALLY over-do it on the edges, it’ll get rid of that harsh foam line and give it a little more of a natural blend. Also pay special attention to all of your seams in the foam. The more distressing there is there, the less youll be able to spot lines later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
16) So once you have the overall structure of your wig and you’re thinking you might be happy with this, its spray paint time. (I’d recommend disposable gloves for this, you’re gonna need to maneuver it every which way to get the pain in every cranny and that paint does NOT like to come off easy.)  Theres really not much advice I can offer on it, just be patient, and do a couple layers, spray it from every angle and let it dry completely before moving on to the next step unless youre as impatient as I am and dont mind ruining a few paintbrushes.
Tumblr media
17) So, like the Fiona pic a few back or this one here, you should have a fairly flat evenly painted foam sculpture. Now is around the time you might start seeing all the inaccuracies in what you’ve made. You gotta push past that it’ll look great I promise. Time to get really creative.
18) for Ty I started by painting the buzzed bits in a base brown, and started in on the line art and her roots while i waited for it to dry before going in with two more colors of brown for depth.
Tumblr media
19) For her roots I ended up using three colors. Black at the very bottom (which blends into the line art) a dark brown that matches more or less the buzz, and then after the fact, a custom yellowed-brown to blend better into the white and give us a little more texture. For this and the rest of the cel-shading in the hair, dab your brush before painting and try to mostly stick to light strokes in one direction (OR: if you have one, a particularly hard bristled paint brush does wonders for this) you don’t want the ends of your strokes to be too defined.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
20) Outline the edges of the hair and all prominent pieces, particularly the hot-glue seams, itll make them less noticable. (dont forget the little animation squiggles for Ty’s sides) and beyond that-- honestly, black out to your hearts content. These pics are from when I thought I’d finished. I really felt I’d over detailed. The next day I looked at a picture and realized there is always WAY more texture and outlining than I feel like I see. Honestly, you cant really over-do it, especially with fine solid black lines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21) The next day I came back at it with the yellowed-brown and LOTS more solid black lines. (Currently in the process of taming down where I got too excessive with the spikes on the side)
22) Once it’s all dried, time to try on. Here’s where we address if you have a short haired character, and the edges of your wig just wont stay down -- invest in a little theatrical grade spirit gum. It’s not too terribly expensive, and unfortunately, I tried the cheaper halloween makeup kind, and it just wont hold how you need it too (and please for my sake, also make sure you get spirit gum remover) I took some hair gel (you could also use elmers glue) just to glue up as much of my hair as I could on the sides and the back of my neck to keep them from the spirit gum, and dabbed it along all of the prominent edges of the wig (namely, side and back) wait for it to get a little tacky and stick that MF-er down good.
Aaaaand Voila???
Let me know if I missed any steps? Its fairly simple, once you get going -- just time consuming.

Heart’s Abundance
More sweet times on the Ridge as William finds his place.
Part 2 Hearthside
Part 1, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 , Part 6
After our harvest meal the afternoon passes in pleasant repletion. The adults scatter to various corners to doze and chat. Jem, Germain, and Fanny disappear outside. I can hear them laughing as I lay a quilt over a sleeping Mandy. She took to John Quincey immediately, and is now curled up beside him on the settle.
This state of peaceful repose lasts approximately an hour. Then Jamie stands and stretches himself, back popping. He looks at William, “Will ye walk wi’ me? I can reacquaint you with the place.”
William stands as well, nodding, “Yes, of course.” He remains a bit formal, and I wish I knew more about their last meeting.
I watch them from the kitchen door as they go, boots crunching the fallen leaves with each step, so alike in gait and height that no one could fail to see them for what they are, a father and his son.
When I turn around Ian is there with his baby in his arms. He stares thoughtfully at the door for a moment before sitting down at the table. He says nothing and I wait patiently, taking the baby and feeling his warm heavy weight. Finally, Young Ian turns to me, “Ye know Auntie, I don’t know why yon man has come, but I think maybe it’s to do with you as well as Uncle Jamie.”
I shake my head. “I don’t think so Ian. Whatever would William want with me?”
Ian gives a small smile, “Maybe he needs ye.”
I gently rock the baby, not looking up as I say, “No. What use could I possibly be?”
Ian touches my arm to draw my attention. His brown eyes are soft. “Ye can be kind. Ye can be a comfort.”
His voice becomes more matter-of-fact. “The Mohawk do say women are great healers of body and spirit. They provide strength and consistency to all.” He smiles at me, “Maybe William needs to find his strength just now.”
I nod, but I’m not convinced. “Maybe.”
We sit a moment longer, enjoying the peace. I smooth the baby’s soft downy hair, then give him my finger, watching in fascination as the tiny hand closes around it even in sleep.
Finally, Ian moves to go. “Just think on it, Auntie, aye?” He takes the little one and leaves to find Rachel.
I stay by myself for a time, and it comes to me how much William has been through. The loss of two mothers (three if you count me) and Jane. Consistency indeed. Also, the loss of his very identity. He had been loved, that much I knew, but must feel very alone and confused just now. I remember how difficult the same situation was for Brianna. She felt heartbroken and torn, betrayed. Compassion wells in me, and as the sun sinks behind the trees I feel a tear slide warm down my cheek.
                                                            -o0OOO0o-
That evening, lying close and warm next to Jamie, I hear how their meeting went.
Jamie took the boy to the White Spring, that place of truth. William was quiet on the trail, turned inward. When they arrived, Jamie broke the thin scrim of ice and took a cold mouthful. William did the same, wiping his mouth on his sleeve.
Jamie settled himself on a boulder and smiled at the boy.  “So, if ye’ll forgive my asking, what brings ye to the Ridge?”
William didn’t answer immediately. He sat as well and drew in a deep breath before speaking. “First, I should like to thank you for your assistance in the matter of Jane, and also for the care you’ve given her sister.”
Jamie waves his hand in dismissal, “’Twas nothing lad. Any decent man would have done the same.”
William gave a mild snort, “I take leave to doubt that. Still, not any man did. You did, and with barely a thought. I knew M--,” he hesitated, then went on, “Mother Claire, both she and my father say you are an honorable man. Apparently, they are right.”
They sat with this for a moment, admiring the slant of golden sunlight through the yellow of chestnut and birch. When William didn’t say more Jamie ventured, “The thought had occurred to me that ye may be in some trouble?” He made the last into a question.
William shrugged irritably. “No. Not trouble exactly. I have someone to find, my cousin Ben, but I cannot continue in that search until spring. That’s not why I’m here.” He stood up suddenly, and paced a bit before taking a deep breath and facing Jamie squarely. “I have come to ask if I might stay for a time. Here,” he adds, as if there were doubt, “on Fraser’s Ridge.”
Jamie was surprised, but quickly brought his face back to neutrality. He still thought William likely needed help in some way, but maybe it isn’t the kind he needed before. He stood and extended a hand, grasping the lad’s shoulder. “Aye, of course, ye’re always welcome.”
Wiliam takes a step backward, away from him, but not in a harsh way. “Thank you. I don’t require anything. I can sleep in the barn or wherever is convenient.”
Jamie smiled at him, “Aye, that’s good, but we can likely find ye a bed.”
They made their way home in the last light of the day. Jamie felt as though a new path had opened before him, unknown and steep, but one that led to a bonny place.
                                                             -o0OOO0o-
The next day we bid farewell to John Quincey, off to overwinter with the Cherokee. William stays. He gradually fits into the routine of the Ridge; hunting, doing farm chores, and joining Roger or Bree whenever they venture out. He is beloved instantly by the children, playing with the boys, talking with Fanny, and carrying Mandy perched high on his shoulder. Still, he is mostly quiet, listening and observing.
I can tell Brianna is pleased, eager to embrace this new brother. William seems equally in awe of her, and they seem to find joy in each other. More than once I catch Jamie watching them, a look of quiet happiness on his face.
One day I come into the study to find Jamie looking out the window. Outside Brianna and William are exercising the horses, walking them in circles and brushing their shaggy winter coats. He doesn’t turn, but he must have sensed me, because he holds his hand out toward me, inviting. I take it and he draws me against him. I circle my arms around his waist, and feel his arms come around me in turn, the warmth of him a comfort and a blessing.
Jamie is still engaged in the scene outside, “I never thought to see such a grand thing, Sassenach.”
I give him a squeeze of acknowledgement and laugh. “Neither did I! I nearly fell off the porch when I saw William.”
Jamie smiles as well, “Aye, and ye weren’t the only one.”
He holds me for a while longer. I look up at Jamie’s face, happy now, but with tiny lines framing his striking blue eyes. I can feel the scars on his back beneath his shirt, and it comes to me how many hardships he faced to bring us to this moment. I am moved with love for him, and lay a hand over his heart. “Jamie, I want you to know. I’m glad he’s here. We all are.”
Jamie takes my hand and turns to face me fully, “I know ye are. You are a wonder, truly. He isna yours, and it isna right that he should be here to torment you. Thank ye Claire, for welcoming the lad.”
“Posh,” I say gently. “He’s yours, Jamie, for that alone I would love him. But also…” I pause, looking outside while I gather my thoughts. “Also, I love him for himself. He’s a fine boy and he was very kind when I spent time with him in Boston.” I know Jamie doesn’t like to recall my marriage to John Grey, but it matters here. “I think- maybe, I can be there for him, maybe be a sort of mother to him.”
Jamie doesn’t answer and I glance up. I am surprised to see unshed tears glimmer in his eyes. “He couldna have a finer one,” he says huskily. He pulls me close then, bends his head, and kisses me. His mouth is soft and his arms are strong, and all is warmth and hope between us.
                                                            -o0OOO0o-
The evenings are long in winter. It is the time for songs, and fires, hearth and home. When the family gathers late in the evening, the children tucked in bed, we often tell stories. We hear Highland tales of kelpies and fairies, farmers and lairds. We hear personal stories about family and friends, also C.S. Lewis, E.B. White, Louisa May Alcott, the lives of Saints, romantic poetry, and Greek heroes. And in each telling, regardless of the subject, we reveal a bit more of ourselves to one another.
It is nearly a fortnight before William tells a story of his own, venturing forth with a story about Sergeant Cutter that has laughter ringing from the rafters, fit to wake the entire Ridge. He speaks more often after that, sometimes tales of adventure, and rarely, of his boyhood. Once he even mentions a groom named MacKenzie.
Tonight we are up particularly late, and the room has grown quiet. The air is heavy, and I know we will wake on the morrow under a blanket of white. Into this expectancy William speaks. Quietly, his elbows on his knees as he watches the hearthfire, he begins a story of Isobel.
“Mother Isobel loved Christmas. She festooned every railing and mantel with greenery. The whole house smelled grand. Even if it were only the two of us, as it often was after we lost grandfather, we sang carols, and had pudding and candies. She made it special every year… magical. To a boy.” He pauses and we wait, listening to the gentle crackle and pop of dried pine wood.
“One year there was a terrible storm. I remember the wind howling down the chimneys and causing the yule log to flare up and wave about. I was frightened and began to cry and whinge. I was a little devil truly. I was really crying from loneliness though, and from being left behind. Mother Isobel somehow knew the truth of it. She took me onto her lap and stroked my hair. ‘Willie, my darling, sometimes those we love cannot be with us. We may wish it fervently, but circumstances cannot be changed. Absence doesn’t mean they love us less, or we them. Indeed, it is often their care for us that keeps them away. They must do what is necessary. But remember love, they are never gone from our hearts.’”
William looks at Jamie. “I thought those words ridiculous then. I felt abandoned, and I let my grief turn to anger at those who left me.” He takes a deep breath, “Now though, I think I understand, and I find Mother Isobel was wise indeed.”
“Aye, that she was,” Jamie says kindly.
We sigh collectively. Roger pulls a guitar into his lap, strumming a chord. “Let’s have a tune. A song to love’s sacrifices,” he says in his rough voice. He turns to Brianna and smiles. “They are always worth it.”
As Roger plays my mind wanders. First to William and his story. Yes, maybe healing of a kind is needed, hopefully has begun already. I will do all I can to help, and the peace of the Ridge will be a balm if William lets it. There is no outside world, no war here. Not yet. Not in winter.
The sacrifices of love. I remember Frank and dear Uncle Lamb. Then further, to Geillis, Dougal, Rupert, and Colum. They all loved, whether people or causes or places or things, and made their choices accordingly. And where were they now? I shudder and Jamie pulls me closer against him, a buttress against the past. I lean on him gratefully. We two know better than anyone the heavy sacrifice that true love can require, and times like this are all the more precious for the knowing. So I return to the present, put my head on Jamie’s chest, and simply listen.
Thanks for reading!  I promise family fun next week!

Prompt Request: 'You know I can't do that' Jake to Amy in as soft a voice as he says to Pam in Casecation. Hope you can get to it! Thank you in advance! All the love! ❤️❤️❤️
HI SO
I KNOW YOU SAID YOU WANTED ANGST AND I TRIED TO MAKE IT ANGSTY BUT i couldn’t resist,,,,,,,,The Action™
I HOPE YOU LIKE IT FHASDLKFJ
The thing is, when she first decided to pursue a career in the NYPD, Amy had no idea just how damn dramatic her life would get.
Like, she’d expected car chases, maybe a few shootouts. A handful of kidnappings and murders, and maybe, if she played her cards right, a big-name serial killer that would propel her through the ranks like a rocket launcher. She’d expected the action-oriented drama. She’d relished in the idea of it.
She hadn’t expected Jake.
Maybe if she had, she wouldn’t be familiar with a hollowness so bone-deep it left her whole body aching, sickly and spent, helpless to do anything but cry as armed guards led him away in handcuffs. She wouldn’t know the exact degree the moonlight slants through the windows along the far wall at 4 o’clock in the morning - the only thing to focus on outside of her own spinning anxiety with Jake gone, not in their bed, sleeping in a narrow prison bunk thousands of miles away. She wouldn’t know the gnawing fear of loss and loneliness always lurking in the back of her mind, even with him settled right beside her; she wouldn’t know the exhilaration of love in its purest, most simple form.
Maybe if she had, she wouldn’t be chained to a steel railing on the upper floor of a bank with a live bomb strapped to her chest right now, an hour before their wedding is meant to start.
(But then again, Dario was her perp - so maybe she’d have ended up here all the same.)
Sweat is beginning to drip in earnest down the small of her back and she squirms, trying and failing to bend her neck in such a way that will allow her to catch a glimpse of the steadily-beeping timer protruding from the front of the bomb. The chain winding tightly around her torso loops around her neck, too; even just turning her head a degree presses the links against her throat, cutting off her airway. She feels herself choking and lifts her chin again, eyes falling shut of their own volition at the responding ache of her tender head. Her arms are pinned, the railing unyielding, and even with her legs sprawled out freely before her, she’s never felt quite so trapped before.
She has no idea how long she’s been here. She has no idea how long she’s been missing in general - it was still early in the morning when Dario attacked her, whacking her in the head with what she could only assume was a heavy metal pipe based on the metallic clang still ringing in her ears. Her memories are foggy, coming in pieces and waves - the stench of a musty apartment, a terrifying wall of photos of her with her eyes scratched out, the pale and frightened face of a child, Dario towering over her, blackness.
And now, the upper floor of a bank, chained to a steel post bolted to the marble floor.
Commanding voices are shouting instructions downstairs and she closes her eyes, imagining the scene in her mind. She only knows it’s a bank from the teller’s voices echoing up here and the panicked 911 call that followed her screaming for help, but she’s responded to this kind of scene before - a dozen civilians, a few employees, and the full force of the squad decked from head to toe in riot gear now storming the building.
(The last time she was in a bank like this, Jake ended up in prison. Bank jobs have never been kind to them. She tries not to think about it.)
There’s a method, a process, and she’s followed it enough times to know that by the time someone makes it to this wing of the second floor, it will be too late.
It’s the first time in her life she genuinely hopes someone will break protocol.
Heavy booted footsteps pounding up the marble staircase some fifteen feet in front of her snap her back to attention - sure enough, the moment her vision focuses, she spots the familiar shape of an officer in riot gear sprinting toward her. The officer casts his semi-automatic aside blindly, like it’s some cumbersome annoyance instead of a literal lifeline in the event of an armed attack, and dives toward her, skidding to a stop on his knees just inches away.
It’s here that she gets a look at his face.
It’s here that she regrets everything.
“Jake,” she croaks, voice strained around the chain links digging into her neck. His body is visibly taut with tension as he carefully removes the bomb’s cover, eyes moving with practiced precision as he quickly studies the inner workings. “Jake, Jake -”
“It’s okay,” he tells her in a calm, rehearsed voice - his calming-the-victim voice, a surefire sign that he’s lying. And of course he is, how can it be okay, there’s a bomb strapped to her chest and a timer steadily moving closer to zero. “I’m gonna defuse this thing and get you outta here -”
This is the first time she’s seen him since she left their apartment this morning - he’d been half-awake then, still in bed, smiling serenely when she’d bent to kiss his forehead. He tried to convince her to stay in bed with him a little longer but she’d resisted, somehow reasoning that all the last-minute day-of-wedding errands were more important than staying with him.
She can’t remember why, now. It seems so far away.
Jake’s face radiates concentration, shining with a thin sheen of sweat that glistens in the late afternoon sun emanating from the first floor over the balcony behind her. He carefully moves the wires, fingertips just barely brushing against them, and each high-pitched beep from the timer has her closer and closer to the edge of pure panic.
Judging by the frustrated growl he releases as he rips his earpiece out of his ear and his helmet off altogether, she’d venture to guess she has less than a minute left.
The panic is closing in quickly but she fights it, chin lifting slightly in an effort to gulp down more air. “It’s too late,” she rasps, and Jake blinks down at the exposed wires rapidly. “Jake, it’s too late, you need to get out of here before this thing goes off -”
“Not a chance, Santiago,” he snaps. “Not without you.”
“Please, Jake,” her voice is ragged. “Get downstairs, get to safety. Please.”
For the first time since reaching her side, his eyes flick up to her face. “You know I can’t do that, Ames,” he says softly.
The panic in her chest squeezes mercilessly around her heart.
He quickly reaches into one of the small pockets on his vest and produces a small pair of scissors, already entirely refocused on the control panel before him. “You trust me?” he asks breathlessly.
Despite the terror quaking in her veins, she nods wholeheartedly.
He clenches his jaw and reaches inside the panel with the scissors, and in the split-second of silence between heartbeats, she hears the tell-tale snip of the blades slicing through a wire.
She holds her breath, but the next beep of the timer never comes.
And all at once Jake is collapsing backwards, the tension leaving him in a rush, and Amy’s borderline sobbing with relief. The chain around her neck pulls tightly and it distorts her voice, but she’s never been so far from caring.
She feels him back at her side before she sees him, his hands firm and steady where they lift her, adjusting her position to alleviate the pressure on her windpipe. “Easy,” he says, voice thick and unfamiliar in her ears. “It’s okay, Ames, just relax. The bomb squad’s on their way up to get this thing off’a you, just try to relax…”
He rips his gloves off with his teeth and strokes her hair soothingly, resting his forehead against the side of her head until they hear footsteps pounding up the staircase before them. The bomb squad converges quickly, and Jake is forced to shuffle aside to make room for them. He doesn’t go far, though; she can still see the shape of him hovering behind the officer to her left, one hand over his mouth, foot tapping against the floor.
The straps of the bomb fall away, taking the weight of the world with them, and then her vision is full of Rosa shoving her way through bomb squad officers with bolt cutters in hand. It takes a few tries, a few grunts of effort from Rosa, but before long the chains are falling away, too.
And the moment they do - before they’ve even fully hit the floor beneath her - Amy is on her feet and flying into Jake’s arms.
He sweeps her up in a bone-crushing embrace, lips and nose pressed against the line of her shoulder, and for a brief moment she’s sure they’re both at risk of floating away from the utter relief of it all. Her head still aches and her throat isn’t much better, but none of that matters when Jake heaves a shuddering sigh and gently tangles his fingers in her hair. “I love you, Amy, I love you so much,” he mumbles hoarsely into her shoulder, and her toes barely brushing the floor. Her exhale escapes like a high-pitched keen and his fingers tighten in her hair. “I’m so glad you’re okay, oh my god I was so worried, you just - you weren’t at any of the places on your list and you weren’t answering your phone and -”
She lets out a quiet whine and the fingers fisted in her hair loosen and begin to gently stroke. “Thank you,” she whispers, and he nestles even closer.
The EMTs converge less than two minutes later, and she has to bite back the urge to fight them off for one more moment. He seems just as reluctant to let her go as she feels - he stays close, even after she’s been hefted onto a gurney, his hand squeezing hers firmly down the stairs and into the back of an ambulance.
Head wrapped in bandages and mind made fuzzy with painkillers wasn’t quite the way she imagined her wedding night ending - but that’s alright, she thinks. Because despite the bandages and the painkillers making her unsteady on her feet, she’s positive no one will ever feel as beautiful as she feels with Jake looking at her like that. Terry’s arm is steady and solid beneath her fingertips - an added precaution should she go down partway down the hallway-turned-makeshift aisle, definitely more out of necessity than tradition - and even though the sterile walls and linoleum tiles are a far cry from the Gina Linetti-approved decor currently adorning the rec center on the other side of town, Amy can’t find it anywhere in herself to care.
Judging by the overjoyed twinkle in Jake’s eyes as he takes her hands and pulls her close, she’d venture to guess he feels the same way.
When she decided to pursue a career in the NYPD all those years ago, she hadn’t expected to be married in a hospital hallway, concussed, relying on her goofy partner - no, her goofy husband to hold her upright as her head spins violently. She hadn’t expected the family her squad has become for her - she hadn’t expected the love that now permeates every aspect of her life.
She hadn’t expected Jake - and she’s never been more thrilled to be so thoroughly caught off-guard.

A simple project: Dungeon Tiles
Tumblr media
Step 1. A simple start of a 3 by 3 by 1/2 inch thick insulation foam (xps foam). Can get it from Home Depot, Lowe’s, or other hardware stores that sell that sort of stuff. You’ll want to look for extruded polystyrene. Expanded is the white stuff that breaks apart and sends all the little pieces everywhere. This stuff is more rigid and a bit denser. Cuts like a dream with either a hobby knife, utility knife, or safety knife. Though I tend to use a hot wire cutter for it.
Tumblr media
Step 2. Slap some grid lines on that bad boy. I go by a 1 inch grid pattern. Some folks do 1.25, but that makes for a larger tile that hogs storage space. Though if you want, by all means, go big! If you lack a hot wire cutter to mark out the tiles, use a ruler and a metal tipped mechanical pencil to dent the surface. You can also follow up with a Sharpie. Sharpies eat away at the foam and will make nice tile breaks. It’s up to you if you want to extend the lines down the side of the tile or not. I like the look of the tile being seen as a whole unit.
Tumblr media
Step 3. Texture! If you want your tile to have some irregularities, say from rough stone surface, or weathering you’re going to want to texture that sucker. You can use a lot of different things. I crumbled up a ball of tinfoil and rolled it back and forth with some force to create this texture. You can also get bigger rocks and roll them around on it. What I do now though is get some hefty gravel and toss it in a box and shake a bunch of tiles around. Make sure to hit the sides too so you get the feeling that the whole tile is one piece. Not just a top texture.
Tumblr media
Step 4. MORE TEXTURE! Gouge that puppy, tear out big chunks. Carve out some cracks and or fissures along it. The more weathered you want it, the rougher you should treat it. Got some pent up anger or frustration? Work it out on this. It’s creative destruction. No bad move can be made here. Over do it? Save it for later for that extra destroyed tile to show that something really bad happened here.
Tumblr media
Step 5. Base coat! XPS foam, though rigid, is a bit squishy, so I like to grab some Modge Podge and slap a few layers on my projects to firm them up and make them a bit more durable. Don’t worry about the underside, just hit the tops and sides. If you’re like me and want to cut corners, mix some black paint into your Modge Podge so you can combine the protective hardening step and the base coat step together. You’ll want Matte Modge Podge. After all, you’re going to be painting over this later. Side note, if you don’t want to mix paint into your Modge Podge I wouldn’t blame you. Black base coats are great for stone work. But if you want to do other things like earth or grass or something then you can keep the Modge Podge untainted and clear of any corrupting influence of paint. I don’t bother since I just put another base coat of earth color or grass color over the black and have no issues.
Tumblr media
Step 6. Choose some grey colors you want for the stone work and do some passes of dry brushing. Dry brushing is basically loading your paint brush with paint and then swiping it a bunch of times on some disposable paper. Like old newspaper or magazines you get in the mail that you’re just going to pitch anyway. Or paper towels. Experiment and test out how much of one color you want your tile to pick up. Me I just smacked it with a dark grey first fairly heavily, then picked up the very tops with a light grey. Try to vary your brush strokes and hit the tile from different angles so as to make it look more natural. Nothing worse than having the immersion spoiled by obvious brush strokes. If you want to hit the very top of things with the faintest amount of paint, test your brush on your hand. If you can barely see the paint on your hand, that’s probably good enough. Remember, it’s easy to add paint, hard to take it away. Worst case scenario? Base coat it again and start over. After applying my dry brushing I then dipped my brush in a home made wash. Pretty much just used watered down black paint in a lot of water with a touch of dish soap to help it flow into all the little nooks and crannies. This will dull down your dry brushing considerably. If you want dull and dingy you can leave it go at that. If you want to pick out the highlights again, feel free to do a little touching up after. I didn’t bother for my tile set since I was aiming for dull and grimy.
Tumblr media
Step 7. If you want, add some moss for vines or roots cracking up through the rocks. Or don’t, you’ll find that if you don’t make the moss flush with the tile your models might sit a bit funky on them. If you’re not bothered by that, then have fun! A side note, the supplies I used? Pretty much all from Dollar Tree and Dollar General. The only thing not from those two places was the XPS foam. I picked up a small tube of Modge Podge, an x-acto knife, a locking safety knife (basically a slimmer box knife) and some moss from Dollar Tree. I’d already bought some tubes of Acrylic paint from Dollar General and a bunch of cheap brushes from there as well. If you can’t find grey, just mix black and white. All said and done I spent maybe 5 bucks at Dollar Tree and maybe 5 more at Dollar General. The most expensive thing was the sheet of XPS (Owens Corning FOAMULAR 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-3 Square Edge Rigid Foam Board Insulation Sheathing, specifically) from Home Depot. That was 15 bucks and change for a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet. You might have some issues getting that in your car, so I suggest bringing a box knife with you to cut it up into chunks. I cut mine in half and stuck it in the back of my van. That being said you can make a lot of tiles and other projects with one sheet. I didn’t get all of it in one shot either. So it can be done on a tight budget like mine. Regardless, I hope this was helpful to some of you who want to get into prop building for your Table Top Role Playing sessions. Cheers! ~F’nor Azril the Feldritch World Builder
