Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Elton John, Andrew Garfield, Saoirse Ronan Titles Among BFI London Film Festival Full Lineup

The 68th BFI London Film Festival has unveiled its star-studded 2024 lineup, featuring Angelina Jolie, Elton John, Daniel Craig, Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield, Saoirse Ronan, and more in a program boasting 39 world premieres and 12 international premieres among its 253 feature, short, series and immersive works.

The festival’s headline gala screenings will showcase a range of high-profile films. The world premiere of Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” starring Ronan opens the festival, while Morgan Neville’s “Piece by Piece” closes it.

International premieres include Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy” with Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff, Sadie Frost’s documentary “Twiggy,” Kimberly Reed’s “I’m Your Venus,” and Jane Mingay’s “Pauline Black: A 2-Tone Story.”

The festival, running from Oct. 9-20, will screen works from 79 countries in 63 languages, with 44% of the program made by female and non-binary filmmakers.

Gail Simone for the comic writer thing?

Gail! As you probably noticed I disappeared back into brainrot here but let's rate all of these:-

7. Secret Six 2006: I simply think this is the most uneven of the three preboot Secret Six runs. I still enjoy it, but it doesn't make my brain itch quite like the others do.

6. Batgirl 2011 #1-34: While I have full respect for Simone taking on this project, and there are definitely aspects of this run I like, it's unfortunately also Babsgirl post-Oracle. One of the things that I go back and forth about in this run is that Simone, quite realistically, makes Barbara have some difficulties with skills and approach due to being back in the field, given she's been behind the computer for years and while I love the concept, it unfortunately also makes Barbara a more incompetent vigilante when set beside any of the boys. Down to Damian. And that irritates me in terms of messaging and what it allows people to say about Batgirl as a character.

5. Birds of Prey 2010 #1-13: There are aspects of this run I really enjoy and the Shiva v Dinah fight that was prevented by HELENA stepping in to challenge Shiva so that Shiva didn't need to fight Dinah yet, and Shiva stopping the fight midway through to put it on 'hold' for later gives me incredible levels of brain rot. However. There are runs I love even more!

4. Secret Six 2008: Gail Simone gets to play with every villain she wants to her hearts content and have them conflicted over if they're doing good, doing bad, being heroes, being antiheroes being villains, betraying each other, saving each other, and makes them all queer coded. I swear she came up with the entire premise as she wanted DC to pay her for some of her messier fic ideas and she somehow got an ongoing out of it because of the portion of her committed fandom who also went "yes please".

3. Villains United 2005: This is so gay. So extraordinarily gay. It also has a plot that contributes to Infinite Crisis I guess but essentially it's just Gail Simone writing herself as much queer coding as possible while she slams her supervillain action figures together and goes 'and then they kissed'. This is pure Gail Simone shipper on board id stuff and I for one adore it, because among other things it's actually messier, queerer and weirder than confirmed stuff is generally allowed to be (I am not even going to touch on the sexuality stuff built into Ragdoll and Parademon's friendship). Just slightly ahead because it's so concentrated and such a perfect encapsulation of how fandoms expected to read queerness into media characters in the mid 2000s.

2. Wonder Woman 2006 #14-44: There's a reason that Simone's in my list of top Wonder Woman runs. Just...ahhhhh. Simone's happy to glory in the mythology of DC and Wonder Woman and roll around in ideas she's clearly been thinking about for years and it comes through really well.

1. Birds of Prey 1999 #56-108: God I adore this run. Simone takes Dixon's extremely good concept, shakes it up a bit going "well, women DO tend to have friendship groups not just a single friendship; most don't actually hate other women for being in their niche". She takes a very multifaceted relationship (Barbara and Helena's rivalry) and works the two of them through it, with trip ups along the way in both directions, to best friends. She plays more with the concept of Barbara selecting the best team for the job and mixes up lineups more often, and pulls characters in from all over. She just gives the entire concept more depth.

Game 25 Snapshot Tues, July 16 11:30am EDT Phoenix @ Washington

Starting: WASH: Atkins, Dolson, Hines-Allen, Vanloo, Walker-Kimbrough (Austin hip recovery, Sykes foot injury, Samuelson hand injury, Richards knee injury) PHX: Allen, Cloud, Copper, Griner, Taurasi

1st Quarter Myisha Hines-Allen opens the scoring with a silky smooth jumper. BG has taken the first 3 shots for the Mercury. It just doesn't look right to see Tash vs. Myisha. Opposing teams? Noooo. Anyway the Mystics pass pass pass and find Shatori free and 3-worthy. DT shoots one in response. Shatori gets a steal and passes ahead to Vanloo, and what's this? A successful layup? Fluke. Bec Allen hits from 3. Loose pass by the Mystics and Eric calls break at 7-12. Aaliyah goes up against BG and gets denied twice but manages to get the ball back each time. Jade drives in with a waning shot clock and makes the layup. Suspicious. Great cleanup on the glass by Edwards while BG is sitting. Ok now it's getting crazy, she goes in for the reverse layup and it's a tricky shot but goes down easy. What gives? Aaliyah hits a jumper and she is feeling good! Things are physical—about half of the players have personally inspected the floor in the last minute or so. DT just popped Ariel in the face and then fell/crawled over her. Let's not do the injury thing tonight ok? Flagrant 1. 19-17.

2nd Quarter The Mystics keep trying to pass overhead and it keeps getting disrupted. Phoenix may play with a "small" lineup but they aren't actually short. Yish drives hard to the basket. Stef stays strong vs BG and we get a rebound. On the transition JVL finds a streaking Jado who goes straight to it, Kiki Herbert Harrigan blocks with her hand but McWin is not happy about the body contact. Regardless Hines-Allen was there for the cleanup and a foul called now. Eric is given a tech over his displeasure about the no-call for Jade. He led the league in techs last year. DT trucks Jade on the other end now, but it was a basketball play IMO. Then she goes for 3. Physicality continues and it is definitely the most physical game of the season. DT goes again for 3 and the lead. A flaming pass from JVL inside to Dolson who is doubled and drops it off to Engstler who hesitates just long enough to draw a foul—and makes the shot. The Mystics go back to the Ariel Atkins jumper. Now it's 4 quick points for Phoenix off a turnover and a rebound. Earl hits another middy. Aaliyah comes back in and continues her great game. Painfully Recent Former Mystic Tash Cloud hits from 3. Meanwhile DC has consecutive misses and then watches as Kah waltzes to the hoop. Energy check. Shatori is there to provide from 3. Bec Allen got a tech—has she been influenced by her more demonstrative teammates? Earl now catch and shoot 3 off the kickout from Stef. There is a lot more movement now on offense for the Mystics as they respond to a zone look. We find JVL for 3 as a result. Tied at 42. Shoutout to Myisha Hines-Allen. She may not have the biggest game numbers-wise today but everything she is doing she is crushing <3. Shatori scoops one home, arcing it right over Copper and Griner. 46-44.

3rd Quarter It's JVL for 3 right off the bat in the 2nd. Slim wrote a paper in college about Christy Winters-Scott. Dredge it up! Let's read it! JVL goes again! She is back in form after a couple tough games on their road trip. Nice moves here by Shatori for 2. On the next play it's perfect chemistry as we pick, roll, and kick out to the hot hand—Vanloo 3, Phoenix timeout. DiDi is HYPING JVL like only she can. Kah hits at the buzzer to respond. A good run by the Mercury follows and it's still a very close contest. Shatori blocks Kah but the ball lands in the hands of Sophie Cunningham for 2. Stef nets a deuce from the key corner. It has been a game of impressive offensive plays. To me the defense has looked good on both ends, but it's been showing off by both teams on O. The All-Star Game wishes it were this smooth. A couple turns now and the Mercury work up a 3-point advantage. Eric stops play. We turn again out of the timeout and commit our second foul this game on a 3-point shot. Not the way to end the quarter, DC. Another turn and we are going to need to chill out at the qurater break. 13-0 Phoenix run from those turns, yikes. 63-71.

4th Quarter Things are looking just as sloppy to open the 4th. Yish flies in like a hero, though, to grab a pass and put it in. She goes strong under the hoop on the next play, too, and Coach Tibbetts wants to talk it over. Heh heh heh we go straight to Hines-Allen again out of the timeout and this time she reverses it. Stef drains a 3 now. A couple misses and turns put us right back down 10 with 5 minutes remaining. Shatori gives us 3 needed points. The Mercury are drawing a lot of fouls. JVL is off from 3, but we recover possession and she gets the second attempt. Earl is fired up and steals the ball right from DT's hands, she takes it all the way herself versus Tash and makes a difficult shot—through contact. 4-point game. Kah has been all money this half, she hits another buzzer beater. Cunningham hits a 3 and the lead is back to 9 with 1:17 on the clock. Kah seals it. We are not a comeback team. 87-96 final. Tash was one rebound shy of a triple-double. Double-double for Myisha as well. The Mercury shot very, very well. Turns piled up too much at the end for DC.

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s longtime leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, took the oath of office on Saturday, ushering in his third presidential term that followed three stints as prime minister.

Erdogan, 69, won a new five-year term in a runoff presidential race last week that could stretch his 20-year rule in the key NATO country that straddles Europe and Asia into a quarter-century. The country of 85 million controls NATO’s second-largest army, hosts millions of refugees and played a crucial role in brokering a deal that allowed the shipment of Ukraine grain, averting a global food crisis.

Erdogan was sworn in during a session in parliament before an inauguration ceremony at his sprawling palace complex. Supporters waited outside parliament despite the heavy rain, covering his car with red carnations as he arrived.

All eyes are on the announcement of his new Cabinet later on Saturday. Its lineup should indicate whether there will be a continuation of unorthodox economic policies or a return to more conventional ones amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Dozens of foreign dignitaries are traveling to attend the ceremony, including NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Carl Bildt, a high-profile former Swedish prime minister. They are expected to press Erdogan to lift his country’s objections to Sweden’s membership in the military alliance — which requires unanimous approval by all allies.

Turkey accuses Sweden of being too soft on Kurdish militants and other groups that Turkey considers to be terrorists. NATO wants to bring Sweden into the alliance by the time allied leaders meet in Lithuania on July 11-12, but Turkey and Hungary have yet to endorse the bid. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will also be attending the ceremony.

According to state-run Anadolu Agency, other leaders in attendance include Azerbaijan’s Ilham Aliyev, Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Armenia’s Nikol Pashinyan, Pakistan’s Shahbaz Sharif, and Libya’s Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

Erdogan was sworn in amid a host of domestic challenges ahead, including a battered economy, pressure for the repatriation of millions of Syrian refugees and the need to rebuild after a devastating earthquake in February that killed 50,000 and leveled entire cities in the south of the country.

Turkey is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis fueled by inflation that peaked at a staggering 85% in October before easing to 44% last month. The Turkish currency has lost more than 10% of its value against the dollar since the start of the year.

Critics blame the turmoil on Erdogan’s policy of lowering interest rates to promote growth, which runs contrary to conventional economic thinking that calls for raising rates to combat inflation.

Unconfirmed media reports say Erdogan plans to reappoint Mehmet Simsek, a respected former finance minister and deputy prime minister, to the helm of the economy. The move would signify a return by the country — which is the world’s 19th largest economy according to the World Bank — to more orthodox economic policies.

In power as prime minister and then as president since 2003, Erdogan is already Turkey’s longest-serving leader. He has solidified his rule through constitutional changes that transformed Turkey’s presidency from a largely ceremonial role to a powerful office. Critics say his second decade in office was marred by sharp democratic backsliding including the erosion of institutions such as the media and judiciary and the jailing of opponents and critics.

Erdogan defeated opposition challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu in a runoff vote held on May 28, after he narrowly failed to secure an outright victory in a first round of voting on May 14. Kilicdaroglu had promised to put Turkey on a more democratic path and improve relations with the West. International observers deemed the elections to be free but not fair.

1st Quarter The Mystics face the Fever coming off of a big win over New York. It's a different starting lineup than our last matchup, with Hull and the younger Samuelson in today. Stef Dolson is back from her illness, thank goodness. We get 2 offensive rebounds on the first possession and 3 good shots… that all miss. DiDi BLOCKS Clark coming in from the help side. Now Myisha goes for 3 but can't connect. Oof, Katie Lou cuts immediately and a quick pass from Clark bypasses our defense. Now Boston gets a block on Stef. Clark gets a step on JVL (via a lil shove) and she shoots the 3. JVL steps behind the Stef screen to exact her revenge from 3. Stef goes 3, too! The announcers are bringing up college stats on Stef—uh, that was ten years ago, of course her game has improved. Peaked in college players don't play 10 years in the W. Stef's D forces a travel from Boston. Earl runs ahead of the play and shoots one over Boston. Tall defenders don't shake her. Turns for the Fever are starting to rack up. JVL forces another with good backcourt D. Edwards gets a nice bucket against Boston, but then Katie Lou goes 3. Earl gets the bucket over Boston again. The Fever have almost as many turns as points… NaLyssa Smith checks in and goes straight to the hoop. Earl responds from 3. 2nd Quarter The Mystics force a shot clock violation on the opening defensive stand. Clark takes the ball right out of Engstler's hands and then passes it back to her on the other end haha—she runs the floor and cashes in. Wheeler is left alone and takes care of business. Stef gets a gorgeous pass to cutting Jade who reverses. Now we pass around the perimeter to find JVL for 3 and Coach Sides needs to talk—10-2 run for DC. We only have 2 turnovers so far. Wheeler cuts behind the defense again and the Mystics need to make an adjustment on the help defense on Clark. Now Clark is getting into the shoving again versus JVL, but this time it's off-ball and Katie Lou comes over to reel her in. Meanwhile Stef and Boston discuss their professional differences. Boston picks up her third foul and sits with 6 minutes in the half. It's 36-23. DC passing is looking excellent. Aaliyah goes against NaLyssa and gets blocked once but recovers quick and shoots over her. Mitchell drives right through two defenders. We foul on the missed free throw rebound but with Indiana in the bonus they go right back to the line. She grabs another one a minute later with help from Hull and the lead has dropped to 6. What do we do in this situation? Throw it away. Gotta keep things exciting in the final 2 minutes. Hull forces a jump ball. Earl gets called for a foul with Indiana in the bonus but Eric challenges.
