No Binder? No Problem!

Are you a trans masculine or DFAB enby looking to chest bind? Are you a cossplayer, GNC cis woman, or a man with gynodemastia? Are you broke as a joke and can’t afford a binder to reduce your chest-fat to whatever you deem an acceptable level is? Well, here’s  a post for you!

Your only required items are:

A well-fitting or even slightly-too-tight sports bra or training bra WITH LITTLE TO NO PADDING, and a tank top that’s a bit too small for you yet is still not going to injure you. Don’t worry if it’s a loose bra, mine works just fine despite being loose a.f.

However, the smaller the tank top, the better. Do not force yourself to use one that is too small though as it can damage your shoulders/neck trying to put it on. General cost: 10$ at most (I bought my sports bra for 5$ at Walmart since it was a super crappy material not meant to hold back visible nipples, as well as only like 3$ on the tank top from the boys section)  My general size is a XXL in boys to XS in mens, however I think my tanktop is a medium that I wear.

The tank top should be a collar-bone covering style, generally seen in mens sporting wear:

and the bra should look a bit like this in terms of cut:

(there is some padding in there, however nothing too crazy. Just avoid “tit shaped bras” which protrude outwards moderately [mildly is okay and even the norm due to bra-designs] even when not on a body and you’ll be good)

Smaller trans men and in between-sized people will probably have to use the boys section, while plus sized individuals can probably actually find one in the mens (however, it will generally be a bit more expensive). Make sure it is a material that has little to no stretch, and don’t be afraid to break a few seams while putting it on later, especially if it ends up being a bit too tight.

Step 1: Put on the tiddy contraption, whatever it may be. If it’s tight-fitting, pull your tiddies to the sides so some of the fat goes towards your armpit area. If it’s not tight enough for that to stay yet, it’s alright.

Step 2: Put on the tank top, and repeat the fat-movement thing from the last bit.I have to reach in from the armpit, cup the fat, then pull it back in a movement similar to if I’m elbowing someone behind me. The tank top should then make you look similar to this:

Note, you can see the lower half of my stomach since the top cannot cover the entirety of my chest. This is normal, especially if you buy it from the boys section, however from the mens it may cover more of your torso. (You may cut off excess material or fold it over and stitch it, or even mimic the camisole method if it would help you bind!) However, please also note that I am able to move my arms freely without being choked, or discomfort. My chest is still noticeable, however, the distortion thanks to the tank top and bra makes it appear as if it’s just big pecs. I personally like having the excessive material at the bottom of the tank top as it makes me appear to be bigger, and thereby helps avert the weird proportions of my chest.

And that’s literally it. That’s the binding method, however, here’s me adding on additional layers with descriptions on how to best utilize alternative binding methods. Everything after here is general “passing” recommendations related to shirts.

Putting on a shirt now, you can see the tank top lines underneath my shirt, and my chest still noticeably sticks out however it is a LOT better than without this method.This shirt is a pretty nicely fitting shirt as well, which usually rides up without any binding methods. It is from the mens section, which highlights my shoulders, whereas womens sections usually try to highlight curves and armpits oddly enough. The section you buy clothes from really will change how you appear, however if you can only buy from womens sections certain brands are better than others (I personally don’t know any, sorry.)

Adding on a shirt with a complex design over the other shirt also helps, as it disorientates the shape of my body. You can almost always find these kinds of shirts in FYE or Hot Topic with intricate yet obviously cheaply made designs, this was one from the 5$ section at walmart mens section, from the “graphic-t” section you usually see the worst pop-culture garbage and facebook posts made into shirts. You don’t have to double shirt usually, nor do you have to do a long-shirt short-shirt combo (that’s just my jam), however generally it does help to layer. Please do not layer too much during the summer.

As you can see, my chest sill sticks out noticeably in several places, however, I am able to pass as having no excessive chest fat, This shirt is already pretty wrinkly thanks to my shitty-storing method for clothes, so a lot of the folds can be mistaken for just me being lazy and not having chest fat.

From the sides it’s still somewhat visible if my arms are not positioned in certain ways (the camera pose is the most noticeable pose and angle), but wearing a unzipped jacket can help distort the appearance further.

For reference, this is what I actually look like in this same shirt (Without undershirt) in a binder:

It’s a noticeably better thing to wear a binder instead, but this tank-top methods works just fine. It ain’t perfect, but when you broke or wore your binder too long the other day this is a great alternative than debilitating dysphoria.

PRACTICE SAFE BINDING

Do NOT use ace bandages, always remember to stretch (even with alternative methods), and do the “cough-stretch” before and after binding where you take in a deep breath and do a few solid coughs to restretch your lungs and ribs after binding. Do not exercise or swim in a binder unless it is one specifically made for such (G2CB recommends buying a size up and using that, but alternative methods are harder to be sure of.)

PLEASE NOTE:

The goal of binding is not to get a “perfectly flat chest”, but to simulate what a masculine chest would be for someone of your weight and height. If you experience dysphoria because you don’t get a super flat chest, remember that even cis dudes have fat on their chest. It’s hard to know when you’ve reached “good enough”, especially if you experience dysmorphia related to dysphoria, but just relax and know one day you’ll get there.This resource may not work as well for taller people or bigger individuals, however I hope it still does to a degree.
