Firstly, these platforms serve as vibrant spaces where individuals proudly showcase their body modifications, ranging from tattoos and piercings to cosmetic surgeries, celebrating their unique aesthetic choices and personal journeys. Users engage in self-expression and creativity, fostering a sense of empowerment and confidence in their appearance. However, Dobson, Carah, and Robards (2018) warn about the power of commercial social media platforms to monitor and manage identities. Social media algorithms may prioritize content that conforms to mainstream beauty standards, potentially marginalizing individuals with unconventional or non-normative body modifications (Duffy and Meisner, 2022). Also, influencers and celebrities often use these platforms to share their own body modifications, shaping trends and influencing the choices of their followers. Hence, the visibility of body modification on social media can contribute to its normalization and acceptance, encouraging individuals to express themselves through these practices.

Body Modification on Visual Social Media

The commercial nature of social media platforms can influence perceptions of body modification, promoting certain beauty standards and aesthetic ideal. As businesses seek to capitalize on users' attention and engagement, they often partner with influencers and content creators who conform to mainstream beauty norms. This can result in the amplification of specific body modification trends or ideals that align with commercial interests, while marginalizing alternative or non-normative expressions of beauty. For example, aesthetic templates on social media platforms can inadvertently contribute to a body image crisis by promoting unrealistic beauty standards, perpetuating societal norms, and creating pressure to conform. In an era marked by global movements such as Me Too Movement, Black Lives Matter and Ceasefire Now online, technology has undeniably become essential for activism (Shah, Sivitanides & Mehta 2014). As technology evolves, the question is: How can we further enhance and advance activism through digital platforms?

Embarking on this exploration, we delve into the potential use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in advancing social media activism.

A New Dimension

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that superimposes the digital world into real-world surroundings, enhancing users' perception by blending digital seamlessly with the surroundings (Skwarek 2018). Through AR, activists can immerse their viewers in real-world situations, taking the phrase “put yourselves in their shoes” almost literally. This will evoke a deep sense of empathy and connection to the cause. For instance, global warming activists may utilize AR to forge a connection in their audience by digitally immersing them into the vivid scenario in the North Pole where the icebergs are melting and polar bears are stranded.

This innovative approach elevates storytelling, providing a visually compelling and, in this case, an educational tool. AR's interactive nature dissolves the barriers to understanding, through experience, fostering a more informed and engaged audience.

Virtual Protests: Beyond Boundaries

Protests are collective expressions of disagreement or objection, typically involving a gathering of individuals who advocate for a cause (Rossi & Artieri 2014). However, physical protests carry risks, including the potential for confrontations with law enforcement, the risk of violence, and the challenge of maintaining public order.

With that said, virtual protests serve as a dynamic solution to geographical constraints and avoidance of the risks mentioned (Molloy 2023). By leveraging the internet, activists can engage a broader audience, amplifying their message globally. This digital realm not only enhances inclusivity but also offers a safer platform for expression and effectively avoids risks associated with physical protests. An example of great use of the internet and digital space for activism is the recent digital protest by Malaysian kids on Roblox where thousands attended a protest in the virtual world of Roblox (Soon 2023).

Tomorrow's Activism in Pixels

In a nutshell, as activism evolves in technology, the integration of experience-based activism through augmented reality and virtual protests foresees a technologically advanced activism scene. These digital tools not only amplify the impact of movements but also redefine engagement, fostering a globally connected community.
