9th door - A Fever

She coughed for another time before letting her head fall against her Daddy's chest. Vicky was sitting in Roman's lap tired out and very sick.

He caressed her burning forehead again and looked a little sceptically to Isabelle who wordlessly gave him the thermometer.

“Baby girl, I'm gonna take your temperature again. You're still feeling very hot, angel.” he explained but Vicky didn't even bother to put up a fight anymore and this was not making it any better.

Roman was severely concerned about her wellbeing, if her fever will not go down in the next twenty minutes, they would need to take her to a hospital.

“Shshsh” Roman shushed his little sunshine who was whimpering while he inserted the ear thermometer, waiting just a few seconds for the measurement.

“It's just 39.8 degrees now.” Roman stated neutrally.

“That's less than before.” Isabelle commented but she didn't sound relieved either.

The temperature was a little lower than before but it wasn't the number on the thermometer which was scaring both of them but more how Vicky behaved.

She was quiet, she hadn't said a word in more than three hours, she barely had eaten anything since lunch and wasn't fighting against the awful tasting cough syrup or the medicine hopefully reducing her fever. It was worrying both of them extremely.Roman just wanted to take this away, he would be so much rather sick than her.

“Let's try cold calve compresses?” Roman suggested now that Vicky had stopped shivering.

Isabelle nodded and prepared everything while he just held their daughter tight who was whimpering between every cough because these were hurting her chest and her throat.

“It's okay. Little sunshine. I know it hurts but mummy and daddy are here and soon it will be better.” he tried to sound optimistic to encourage her.

They waited patiently for Isabelle's return and Victoria just let herself fall heavier against Roman's chest who was willing to hold for as long as he needed to.

He lifted her up a little so Isa could out a towel on Roman's lap because they knew it was senseless trying to lay her down, she didn't want to and they didn't want to make this any worse.

“She's gonna sleep in our bed tonight.” Roman whispered while Isabelle put the wet and cold towel around her daughter's legs who just sighed in response. She seemed to like the sensation which was a good sign. “Of course.” Isabelle responded “Hopefully.” she added not so sure about this yet.

Once she was done she sat down next to Roman, holding his left hand in her right one, praying, hoping she would be better soon. They didn't want to take her to a hospital she wasn't even three years old yet and shouldn't experience a night at a hospital yet.

Half an hour later they took her temperature again, it was only 39 degrees now and she had fallen asleeep against Roman's chest so they just took her, the medicine and the towels upstairs and spend the rest of the night tensely sleeping and getting up twice to check her temperature again but it decreased during the night and the next morning she was so much better.
