thinking more about this. specifically how the hwu/hss timeline would work. especially bc i wanted AJ still in her 20s when she attended bc Avalon is in his 30s but tbh i dont think thatll quite work bc hss and hwu happen at the same time

i think after graduating, AJ IMMEDEATLY leaves town and heads to the opposite coast with her at-the-time gf (like. she probably doesnt even attend her graduation) and cuts contact w all her family, but Matthew stays in California & attends college in or not to far from Cedar Cove

i think Max was an accident baby, Matthew knocked up his girlfriend & both their parents demanded encouraged a shotgun wedding. the AJ's mom hires a PI to track down her so that she can learn about her new family members but it takes a year or two before she actually returns to Cedar Cove. she was in a pretty bad place while in NYC so its easy for her to slip back into being her mom's Perfect Little Barbie Doll. id say AJ and Matthew are about 21 by this point?

their father strong arms encourages Matt to get a degree in education to follow his footsteps into becoming a principal and take over at Hearst High once he retires (shoutout @hssprimefan for the Grandfather Warren Was Also Principal idea) so he returns to Cedar Cove after getting his degree (i think his wife drops out of college to take care of Max & Mia, Not What She Wanted To Do but she didnt feel like she had a choice) and ends up becoming the principal at Hearst pretty quickly thanks to his dad having a lot of connections w the Cedar Cove school board

their mother wants AJ to go back into pagents but AJ refuses and starts acting instead, partially bc she likes it but partially as a compromise, doing community theater and local indie films, one of which some how ends up being viewed by Richard Sheridan, who (anonomously) offers to pay for her to attend HWU. by this point, Max & Mia are in middle school, so the twins would be uuuuuuh. 32? but my hwu rewrite starts at AJ's third year there so they'd be 35 by then. which makes AJ 3 years younger than Avalon and Hunt

#AJ also took classes at the community college in Cedar Cove b4 hwu but she wasnt like A Full Student or anything #she just enrolled in whatever classes sounded interesting. it took her like. 6 years to get an associate's degree #and it wasnt like. A Specific Degree until a student advisor was like “take this class and you will have a liberal arts degree”#& she was like yeah okay sure whatever #Matthew was doing something similar in college. just there to play football & took whatever classes gave him the credits to stay #sports related injury meant he had to stop playing & thats when his dad swooped in and said “Be An Educator. Take Over Hearst High.”#& at first he was like FUCK no i dont want to work at the place i went to school at thats lame #but then his dad let him in on the REAL family business (taking bribes to changes grades) and changed his tune #anyway feel free to ask about what classes AJ took during community college #or like. send a page of a course description for a random community college's class & i'll tell you if she took it
