this is the most succinct way i can think to put it:
nica and dimitri fail to overcome their struggles due to their flaws, but they overcome them and get “good endings.” emily and oliver struggle similarly to nica and dimitri respectively, but don’t overcome their flaws, setting them up for “bad endings.”
if emily and oliver are supposed to be the “bad ends” to nica and dimitri’s “good ends”, then what does that say about leon and ethan? how is leon a “good end” when he died for his hubris, and how could ethan’s hubris possibly make ethan end up worse than leon did?
#finally found a way to explain my thought process without having it take up several paragraphs. mwah.#i yell into the abyss#this unfortunately misses the added detail of ''the first four of them take the objectively wrong approach to achieving their True Goals#and nica and dimitri have to learn to change these approaches lest it lead to their downfall.#and emily and oliver refuse to change course which will likely lead to their downfall#but ethan does not. actually. seem to be taking the Objectively Wrong approach to achieving his goals#...unless we're wrong about ethan's True Goals.#emily's goal is the gentrify red line ...but her motivations? win back her husband's love and not be miserable about her loneliness anymore#winning back her husband and ridding herself of her pain are her true goals.#oliver's goal is to take over the world ...but his motivations? buy back his family's love and keep them safe forever. earn their 'respect'#getting back in his family's good graces and keeping them safe are his true goals#ethan's goal is to rid the world of human error and become something of a god. while also getting wonderland. ...but his motivations?
