Apple launches fitness subscription service for just under $80 a year
Apple is launching a fitness subscription service called Fitness+, which for a skosh under $80 a year will give users access to workouts and instruction delivered through the Apple Watch or iPad.
Fitness+ will cost $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Apple is offering the first three months free with the purchase of a watch. Family will also be able to use Fitness+ for no additional charge, the company said Tuesday.
The launch of Fitness+ builds on the growing number of health metrics already available on the Apple Watch, including heart rate, calories burned, pace and distance. This new service folds in a catalog of video workouts that can be viewed on a userâs iPhone, iPad or Apple TV. Once a user launches a video, it communicates with and starts the correct workout in their Apple Watch workout app.
The userâs health metrics are sent in real time to whatever screen theyâre using to watch the workout video. Those metrics change as the workout progresses. For instance, if a trainer in a particular video tells the user to check their heart rate or check their running pace, those numbers get larger and make it easier to see.
Appleâs in-house trainers will offer fresh workouts each week from its Fitness+ studio, according to the company. There are also videos geared for yoga, cycling, treadmill walking and running as well strength and core exercises. The aim is for these workouts to be done anywhere and with any equipment.
After the workout, users will get a summary of the data captured from a userâs Apple watch sensors. Apple Music subscribers can also save music played during their workouts and then listen to them later.
Apple said Tuesday that all of this data will be protected. When using Fitness+, calories and the workouts will not be stored along with their Apple ID.
The Fitness+ service is the latest example of Apple building out an ecosystem of subscription products. Its creation also adds to the increasingly crowded field. Fitbit is just one company that has its own service thatâs tied to its hardware. Then there are the host of fitness apps. For instance, Aaptiv, a Netflix-style app-based startup that connects people to a range of trainer-led indoor and outdoor fitness and wellness sessions, raised fresh capital back in April.

5 Fitness Apps To Keep You Motivated

Many of us know the difficulty of trying to maintain healthy eating habits when weâre always on-the-go. A busy lifestyle that involves chasing after kids, fighting traffic or lots of travel makes it easy to be tempted by fast food and sugary snacks. But, just because youâre not at home doesnât mean you have to eat foods that will leave you feeling tired, bloated or unsatisfied. Balancing a healthy diet with a busy lifestyle takes a bit of work and planning, but these five tips will make it easier to eat right and maintain that fast-paced lifestyle.
Donât Skip Breakfast When youâre in a hurry, itâs tempting to skip breakfast. But that morning meal will give you the energy to get through a busy day and help keep you from being so hungry by lunchtime that you grab the first thing available. A bit of planning ahead of time will make it easy to get a nutritious breakfast in a hurry. Make a big batch of oatmeal in the slow cooker and divide it into enough portions for the week. Do some of the prep work ahead of time. Chop vegetables or grill chicken and keep it on hand in the refrigerator or freezer will make it easy to pull a meal together in a few minutes. Pack A Snack If you know youâre going to be running around and wonât have a chance to sit down for a meal, you can plan ahead and throw a few prepackaged snacks in your bag so youâre ready when hunger strikes. Some good options include pre-cut vegetables, nuts, jerky, hummus with pretzels, or fruit. Having these options on hand in your refrigerator or pantry will make it easier to grab and go when youâre in a hurry. If youâre heading to the airport, most of these options will make it past security, so you wonât be forced to purchase overpriced convenience foods in the terminal. Skip Fast Food Joints & Head To The Supermarket If youâre on the road and you stop at a fast-food New Yearâs resolutions have been made, gym memberships purchased and running shoes dusted off. All the startups threatened by iOS 14âs new features
Fitness, wallpaper, and lost item-finding startups could have a big new competitor baked into everyoneâs iPhones. Leaks of the code from iOS 14 that Apple is expected to reveal in June signal several new features and devices are on the way. Startups could be at risk due to Appleâs ability to integrate these additions at the iOS level, instantly gain an enormous install base and offer them for free or cheap, as long as they boost sales of its main money maker, the iPhone.
Itâs unclear if all of these fresh finds will actually get official unveiling in June versus further down the line. But hereâs a breakdown of what the iOS 14 code obtained by 9To5Macâs Chance Miller shows and which startups could be impacted by Apple barging into their businesses:
Fitness â Codename: Seymour
Apple appears to be preparing a workout guide app for iOS, WatchOS and Apple TV that would let users download instructional video clips for doing different exercises. The app could potentially be called Fit or Fitness, according to MacRumorsâ Juli Clover, and offer help with stretching, core training, strength training, running, cycling, rowing, outdoor walking, dance and yoga. The Apple Watch appears to help track your progress through the workout routines.
Icons for Appleâs fitness feature from the iOS 14 code
The iOS Health app is already a popular way to track steps and other fitness goals. By using Health to personalize or promote a new Fitness feature, Apple has an easy path to a huge user base. Many people are afraid of weight and strength training because thereâs a lot to learn about having proper form to avoid injury or embarrassment. Visual guides with videos shot from multiple angles could make sure youâre doing those pushups or bicep curls correctly.
Appleâs entrance into fitness could endanger startups like Future, which offer customized workout routines with video clips demonstrating how to do each exercise. The $11.5 million-funded Future actually sends you an Apple Watch with its $150 per month service to track your progress while using visuals, sounds and vibrations to tell you when to switch exercises without having to look at your phone. By removing Futureâs human personal trainers that text to nag you if you donât work out, Apple could offer a simplified version of this startupâs app for free.
Apple Fitness could be even more trouble for less premium apps like Sweat and Sworkit that provide basic visual guidance for workouts, or Aaptiv thatâs restricted to just audio cues. Hardware startups like Peloton, which offers off-bike Beyond the Ride workouts with live or on-demand class, and Tempoâs giant 3D-sensing in-home screen for weight lifting, could also find casual customers picked off by a free or cheap alternative from Apple.
Thereâs no code indicating a payment mechanism, so Apple Fitness could be free. But itâs also easy to imagine Apple layering on a premium feature like remote personal training assistance from human experts or a wider array of exercises for a fee, tying into its increasing focus on services revenue.
Wallpapers â access for third-parties
The iPhoneâs current wallpaper selector
In iOS 14, it appears that Apple will offer new categorizations for wallpapers beyond the existing Dynamic (slowly shifting), Still and Live (move when touched) options. Appleâs always only offered a few native wallpapers plus the option to pull one from your camera roll. But the iOS 14 code suggests Apple may open this up to third-party providers.
A wallpaper âstoreâ could be both a blessing and a curse for entrepreneurs in the space. It could endanger sites and apps like Vellum, Unsplash, Clarity, WLPPR and Walli that aggregate wallpapers for browsing, purchase or download. Instead, Apple could make itself the ultimate aggregator by being built directly into the wallpaper settings. But for creators of beautiful wallpaper images, iOS 14 could potentially offer a new distribution method where their collections could be available straight from where users install their phone backgrounds.
The big question will be whether Apple merely works with a few providers to add wallpaper packs for free, does financially backed deals to bring in providers or creates a full-blown marketplace for wallpapers where creators can sell their imagery like developers do apps. By turning this formerly free feature into a marketplace, Apple could also start earning a cut of sales to add to its services revenue.
AirTags â find your stuff
Apple appears to be getting closer to launching its long-awaited AirTags, based on iOS 14 code snippets. These small tracking tags could be attached to your wallet, keys, gadgets or other important or easily lost items, and then located using the iOS Find My app. AirTags may be powered by removable coin-shaped batteries, according to MacRumors.
Native integration with iOS could make AirTags super-easy to set up. They also could benefit from the ubiquity of Apple devices, as the company could let the crowd help find your stuff by allowing AirTags to piggyback on the connectivity of any of its phones, tablets or laptops to send you the missing itemâs coordinates.
Most obviously, AirTags could become a powerful competitor to the verticalâs long-standing frontrunner, Tile. The $104 million-funded startup sells $20 to $35 tracking tags that locate devices from 150 to 400 feet away. It also sells a $30 per year subscription for free battery replacements and 30-day location history. Other players in the space include Chipolo, Orbit and MYNT.
But as we saw with the launch of AirPods, Appleâs design expertise and native iOS integrations can allow its products to leapfrog whatâs in the market. If AirTags get proprietary access to the iPhoneâs Bluetooth and other connectivity hardware, and if theyâre quicker to set up, Apple fans might jump from startups to these new devices. Apple also could develop a similar premium subscription for battery or full AirTag replacements, as well as bonus tracking features.
Augmented reality scanning â Codename: Gobi
iOS 14 includes code for a new augmented reality feature that lets users scan places or potentially items in the real world to pull up helpful information. The code indicates Apple is testing the feature, codenamed Gobi, at Apple Stores and Starbucks to let users see product, pricing and comparison info, according to 9To5Macâs Benjamin Mayo. Gobi can recognize QR-style codes for specific locations like a certain shop, triggering a companion augmented reality experience.
It appears that an SDK would allow partners to build their own AR offerings and generate the QR codes that initiate them. Eventually, these capabilities could be extended from Appleâs mobile devices to the AR headset itâs working on so youâd instantly get a heads-up display of information when you entered the right place.
Apple moving to power lighter-weight AR experiences rather than just offering the AR Kit infrastructure for developers to build full-fledged apps could create competition for a range of startups and other tech giants. The whole point of augmented reality is that itâs convenient to explore hidden experiences in the real world, which is defeated if users have to know to download and then wait to install a different app for every place or product. Creating a central AR app for simpler experiences that load instantly could speed up adoption.
Snapchatâs Scan AR platform
Startups like Blippar have been working on AR scanning for years in hopes of making consumer packaged goods or retail locations come alive. But again, the need to download a separate app and remember to use it has kept these experiences out of the mainstream. Snapchatâs Scan platform can similarly trigger AR effects based on specific items from a more popular app. And teasers of Facebook and Googleâs eventual augmented reality hardware and software hinge on adding utility to every day life.
If Apple can build this technology into everyoneâs iPhone cameras, it could surmount one of ARâs biggest distribution challenges. That might help it build out a developer ecosystem and train customers to seek out AR so theyâre all ready when its AR glasses finally arrive.

Apple appears to be preparing a workout guide app for iOS, WatchOS, and Apple TV that would let users download instructional video clips for doing different exercises. The app could potentially be called Fit or Fitness, according to MacRumorsâ Juli Clover, and offer help with stretching, core training, strength training, running, cycling, rowing, outdoor walking, dance, and yoga.
Many people are afraid of weight and strength training because thereâs a lot to learn about having proper form to avoid injury or embarassment. Visual guides with videos shot from multiple angles could make sure youâre doing those pushups or bicep curls correctly.
Appleâs entrance into fitness could endanger startups like Future, which offer customized work out routines with video clips demonstrating how to do each exercise. $11.5 million-funded Future actually sends you an Apple Watch with its $150 per month service to track your progress while using visuals, sounds, and vibrations to tell you when to switch exercises without having to look at your phone.
Hardware startups like Peloton, which offers off-bike Beyond The Ride workouts with live or on-demand class, and Tempoâs giant 3D-sensing in-home screen for weight lifting could also find casual customers picked off by a free or cheap alternative from Apple.
Thereâs no code indicating a payment mechanism so Apple Fitness could be free. But itâs also easy to imagine Apple layering on premium feature like remote personal training assistance from human experts or a wider array of exercises for a fee, tying into its increasing focus on services revenue.
Wallpapers â Access For Third-Parties
The iPhoneâs current wallpaper selector
In iOS 14, it appears that Apple will offer new categorizations for wallpapers beyond the existing Dynamic (slowly shifting), Still, and Live (move when touched) options. Appleâs always only offered a few native wallpapers plus the option to pull one from your camera roll. But the iOS 14 code suggests Apple may open this up to third-party providers.
A wallpaper âstoreâ could be a both a blessing and a curse for entrepreneurs in the space. It could endanger sites and apps like Vellum, Unsplash, Clarity, WLPPR, and Walli that aggregate wallpapers for browsing, purchase, or download. Instead, Apple could make itself the ultimate aggregator by being built directly into the wallpaper settings. But for creators of beautiful wallpaper images, iOS 14 could potentially offer a new distribution method where their collections could be available straight from where users install their phone backgrounds.
The big question will be whether Apple merely works with a few providers to add in wallpaper packs for free, does financially-backed deals to bring in providers, or creates a full-blown marketplace for wallpapers where creators can sell their imagery like developers do apps. By turning this formerly free feature into a marketplace, Apple could also start earning a cut of sales to add to its services revenue.
AirTags â Find Your Stuff
Apple appears to be getting closer to launching its long-awaited AirTags, based on iOS 14 code snippets. These small tracking tags could be attached to your wallet, keys, gadgets, or other important or easily lost items, and then located using the iOS Find My app. AirTags may be powered by removable coin-shaped batteries, according to MacRumors.
Native integration with iOS could make AirTags super easy to set up. They could also benefit from the ubiquity of Apple devices, as the company could let the crowd help find your stuff by allowing AirTags to piggyback on the connectivity of any of its phones, tablets, or laptops to send you the missing itemâs coordinates.
Most obviously, AirTags could become a powerful competitor to the verticalâs long-standing frontrunner Tile. The $104 million-funded startup sells $20 to $35 tracking tags that locate devices from 150 to 400 feet away. It also sells a $30 per year subscription for free battery replacements and 30 day location history. Other players in the space include Chipolo, Orbit, and MYNT.
Apple could also develop a similar premium subscription for battery or full AirTag replacements, as well as bonus tracking features.
Augmented Reality Scanning â Codename: Gobi
iOS 14 includes code for a new augmented reality feature that lets users scan places or potentially items in the real world to pull up helpful information. The code indicates Apple is testing the feature, codenamed Gobi, at Apple Stores and Starbucks to let users see product, pricing, and comparison info, according to 9To5Macâs Benjamin Mayo.

Startups could be at risk due to Appleâs ability to integrate these additions at the iOS level, instantly gain an enormous install base, and offer them for free or cheap as long as they boost sales of its main money maker, the iPhone.
Itâs unclear if all of these fresh finds which actually get official unveiling in June versus further down the line. But hereâs a break down of what the iOS 14 code obtained by 9To5Macâs Chance Miller shows and what startups could be impacted by Apple barging into their businesses:

The biggest fitness trends of 2019
Working out the recommended three times a week isn't as hard as it sounds, right? â¨â¨Except, well, it is. Especially when it currently feels like you've completed a marathon just getting out of bed.
Still, exercise is a Good Thing. Even running half a mile can make you feel a million times better and those endorphins really do kick in (eventually).
And if you hate the gym, you're in luck. There's a whole world of trendy high-intensity workouts, from yoga wheeling to protein-induced climbs that you can do without even leaving your home. â¨â¨We've rounded up the workout crazes you can look forward to sweating your way through next year. You're welcome!
The treadmill is making a comeback
For the last couple of year, all things extra have reigned in the fitness world. HIIT classes in a 45-degree heat? Sure. Ballerina plie squats? Been there, done that. But we've got news for you: the humble treadmill is back. ClassPass saw an 82% increase in classes that incorporated treadmills in 2018 compared to the year before.
They've been a part of the studio landscape for a while, mainly as part of an ensemble cast of equipment at Barryâs Bootcamp, for example. But more recently theyâve started acting as headliners in their own right, with treadmill-centric studios popping up all over the shop.
Peloton's treadmill, which offers virtual running 'classes' is only increasing in popularity, plus Equinox also still offers Precision Running programmes. Also, workout apps like Aaptiv offer audio coaching during your runs, to help you hone your form and speed.
Prepare to shake up your HIIT class
Plenty of fitness studios are creating HIIT hybrid classesâlike CorePower Yoga, a Colorado-born studio chain that took the reins on yoga-HIIT classes.
Life Time Fitness just launched a HIIT yoga class called Fire Yoga, too. There's also F45, the Aussie phenomenon taking the UK by storm. It bridges the gap between one-on-one personal training sessions and fitness classes with its high-intensity circuits. Every F45 studio in the world runs the exact same 45-minute class each day, which alternate between HIIT-style cardio, strength training, or a no-nonsense hybrid mixture of the two.
Flying just got fun
Introducing Flying Fantastic, an aerial fitness school (or rather 'aerial contortionism'). Don't be put off by the 30ft ribbons suspended from the ceiling, or simply by how difficult these classes are - your abs and arms with thank you later. All that balancing, lifting and mid-air posing relies on a steady core. Gymbox also run aerial hoop and aerial yoga classes.......read more.......

8 Incredible App Landing Pages (and How You Can Create Your Own)
Have you looked at your iPhoneâs App Store lately? How about Google Play?
Iâve seen landfills with better curation.
With more than two million apps available on each store, people have a much better chance of finding a pearl in an oyster than randomly stumbling upon your app. No matter how appealing it isâno matter how entertaining or even life-changingâmost people wonât discover it without a robust marketing campaign.
(And, to paraphrase Contentlyâs Bradley Little, going viral is not a strategy.)
The first step in marketing your iPhone or Android app is finding the right channels to promote it. Using Google Adsâ Universal App Campaigns (UAC) is a strong starting point, but many marketers get extra mileage from traditional PPC campaign, social media marketing, app cross-promotion, or even email blasts to newsletter subscribers.
In these cases, youâll need a stellar landing page to overcome that hesitance we all feel about installing yet another piece of software onto our phones. For this reason, ensuring a buttery-smooth post-click experience is fundamental to the app marketerâs toolbox.
Hence this post. These are some of the best app landing page examples out there, all of âem built with Unbounce. We want to highlight how you can create a page to promote your own mobile app and, as importantly, why a well-designed landing page can make all the difference. Along the way, weâll throw in our two cents about what sets them apart.
So hop right into the examples below, or keep reading for a handful of best practices to get you started.
How to build app landing pages
If youâve created a landing page for any olâ purpose, you may have encountered some of this advice before. But itâs worth revisiting in the context of app marketing since some elements gain increased importance when youâre hoping to score some downloads. Letâs get started:
Establish your conversion goal first. As youâll see from the examples below, an app landing page can be a lot of things. It can be a simple download page with links directly to the Android and iOS app stores. Or you might want your customers to subscribe to your service first. Or they might need to purchase a physical product for the app to work. Regardless, your conversion goal will have a significant impact on your calls-to-action, your copy, and even your design. So start there.
Start with mobile. If youâre like me, you default to desktop when building a new landing page. (Our builder kinda sorta encourages it, to be fair.) But since apps are designed primarily for phones, it usually makes sense to create your mobile version first. That way, youâll better set yourself up for those visitors whoâre most likely to download your app.
Keep their attention. This is true of all landing pages, but app pages that encourage a direct download in particular benefit from a 1:1 attention ratio. So donât give âem the world. Instead, hit your visitors with the essential information they need to convert.
Show the device. Ideally, you want to show your app running on a device thatâs as similar as possible to what customers are using. Sometimes thatâs an iPhone. Sometimes itâs an Android phone. Itâll differ depending on use cases, the campaign youâre running, and the kinds of customers you court.
EDITORâS NOTE. Designing a great landing page is a challenge of its own. If you want some pro tips, check out this post featuring great examples of high-converting landing pages (and the secrets to swipe from âem).
The best app landing page examples
Aaptiv (Industry: Fitness)
Image courtesy of Aaptiv. Click the image to access the desktop version. (Click here for the mobile one.)
How Aaptiv nails it: Design your app landing page differently for desktop versus mobile devices.
Aaptiv is a name that ensures this app will appear at the top of any alphabetical list. (Ahem, like this one.) But abecedarian branding is not enough to guarantee discovery. Instead, having a powerful marketing campaign, complemented by carefully targeted app landing pages like this one, can help a lot. This particular page focuses on employers who might want to include an Aaptiv account as part of their companyâs wellness plan.
Why it works:
Include big-name clients. The testimonial from an existing Aaptiv member speaks to the flexibility of the app as well as the motivation it provides. I love it. But for employers, logos from prestigious brands like Starbucks and Amazon might be even more significant. If I want my employees to feel like they work for a first-class company, I really canât do better than matching my wellness offerings with some big names.
Design for the device. Weâve included screenshots of both versions of the landing page here to highlight the differences between them. For instance, the desktop version has a handy breakdown of some of the appâs features. It also includes a few extra visuals that the mobile version tosses in favor of speedier loads. This ensures both versions are lightning-fastâand both still look like a million bucksâno matter the device that visitors are using.
Clarity shows confidence. When youâve got something genuinely hot to show off, as Aaptiv does, itâs best to let your product speak for itself. Thatâs why the copy here is so straightforward. In the desktop version, Aaptivâs pitch includes screenshots and copy that show off unique programs, expert trainers, and custom tracking in action. And thatâs way more effective than flouncy language.
EDITORâS NOTE. The Unbounce Builder lets you hide elements depending on which version your visitors see. You can go for maximum visual impact on the desktop while targeting better performance (and more engagement) on smartphones.
Advanced Producer (Industry: Real Estate)

How Advanced Producer nails it: Cut down on frustration by texting your desktop visitors a download link.
The Advanced Producer Mobile App by Advanced Commission doubles as an educational tool and a time-saver for REALTORSÂŽ using the companyâs commission lending service. Though they have other pages for mobile campaigns, this oneâs designed specifically for desktop viewing. Letâs take a look at some of the smart choices theyâve made in creating it.
Why it works:
Use texting to get them downloading. How do you ensure a download if youâre putting a landing page together for desktop viewing? After all, if visitors donât have remote app install set upâand not many doâclicking a link to either app store from a desktop leads to an error message. Thatâs⌠not good. Advanced Producer cleverly gets around this problem by sending an SMS directly to their phone.
Use powerful language. REALTORSÂŽ are a competitive bunch, and they donât have time to waste on namby-pamby apps. Both copy and design here respect that. Itâs not just a matter of using forceful words (âdominate your market,â âdevour pages of pro-level tipsâ) but also of being direct and to the point.
Say what platforms you support. For a while, it seemed app developers were all about Apple. But since Android phones outnumber iPhones in the US, itâs a good idea to let your visitors know that your app is downloadable on Google Play as well as in the iTunes app store (assuming, yâknow, thatâs actually true).
Cameo (Industry: Talent)
Image courtesy of Cameo and KlientBoost. Click the image to access the full version.
How Cameo nails it: Show your app in action.
Cameoâs unique service: personalized shoutouts from celebrities, athletes, and influencers that you can send to your friends, family, or coworkers. Talent earn money for a minute of their time, and customers get the thrill of a lifetime. Itâs a charming idea, and an easy-to-use app lies at the heart of it. Trust me, your mom will love those birthday wishes from RiFF RAFF.
According to Tyler Mabery, the designer from KlientBoost who created this page, the challenge was letting users know how to use Cameo:
I made a section that explains the three steps in getting a Cameo so that users know exactly how the service works. I decided to have it peeking above the fold so that users would scroll down more to read about the service. It worked and this page is getting an 85% click-through rate.
Why it works:
Keep-it-simple steps. As Mabery says, the page isnât shy about letting users know exactly how it works. In Cameoâs case, you donât need a degree in rocket science to understand the appâbrowse talent, book talent, get yer video from talent. 1-2-3. But thatâs the point. Itâs easy. Listing steps when itâs effortless reinforces simplicity.
Show them how it works. Itâs not always possible to highlight everything your app does. But clever use of animation or video can show off either functionality or results. Here, for instance, Cameo provides a sample from âMr. Wonderfulâ himself, Shark Tankâs Kevin OâLeary. Another video, showing a fanâs reaction to a message from Cody Ko, is even more powerful. (And, yeah, I had to look him up too.)
âWhatâs it good for?âThatâs the kind of question that a lot of marketers forget to answer about their products. Cameoâs app landing page uses a lot of space to communicate its many uses. They even provide lively, humorous examplesââHave Chris Harrison give a gift better than âthe Final Roseâââthat inspire creativity and fun.
Carly (Industry: Automotive)
Image courtesy of Carly. Click the image to access the full version.
How Carly nails it: Design a landing page that actually fits your offering.
Some apps just install and go. In those cases, just providing a download link can be the best choice. (Though you should take care that your app landing page doesnât end up looking generic.) But like many sophisticated tools, Carlyâs âconnected carâ needs a little something extra to unlock your carâs hidden features. For this reason, theyâve designed a page that funnels potential customers into the right checkout flow for their needs.
Why it works:
Offer options (if you have to). Now, usually Unbounce recommends keeping your landing pages focused on a single call to action. But hereâs another approach. Since it can be a challenge to accurately target prospects based on the car they drive, Carlyâs page features seven buttons. Clicking on one takes you to a shop page that matches your needs. (Hitting a store page right away might be jarring, though, so itâd be worth testing what might happen if visitors are funneled to a second-stage landing page tailored to each manufacturer.)
Keep the eye moving down. Ideally, a visitor would immediately check to see if Carly supports their automobile. Then theyâd buy the device. But conversions rarely work out that way. (We wish they did!) For the unconvinced, an animated arrow keeps them scrolling to a more detailed rundown of the product, its benefits, and some crystal clear illustrations of what it can do.
Under the influence. I donât know the first thing about Beemers. (I take the bus to work most days.) But Justin Buice does. Heâs an influencer who runs a successful channel dedicated to customizing and upgrading BMWs, and his YouTube video is featured in place of a testimonial on this page. If I were to tell you that Carly rocks, youâd likely scoff. (âTake a hike, bus boy!â) But the same claim from someone like Justin will convince you.
Crash Detech (Industry: Automotive Safety)

How Crash Detech nails it: Provide free alternatives to paid services.
South Africa has some of the most dangerous roads in the world, and Crash Detech helps keep drivers safe by alerting emergency responders. But even a life-saving idea needs a brilliant marketing campaign behind it. Thatâs where this app landing page comes in. Itâs actually the second step of a âfree medical idâ campaign thatâs designed to encourage subscriptions to the service.
The companyâs CEO, Jaco Gerrits, provides a little context about how it works:
Our main aim is to convert users on our paid subscription, but we also offer an alternative where they could âtry the app for free.â Once the user clicks the CTA, a welcome SMS/Text is sent with a link to our app, encouraging users to download and sign-in. We then use automation techniques to retarget users who have not downloaded and signed in to the app, to further improve our conversion rates.
Why it works:
Offer a free alternative. There are two buttons here, allowing visitors to either sign up for the paid subscription now or to get a free version of the service. Onboarding people into your app with limited functionality (or using a free trial) does two things. First, it lets them try before they buy. And, second, it begins a lead nurturing strategy thatâll eventually convert many unpaid users into paying customers.
The promise of safety. Safety and security can be powerful motivators, as they are throughout this page. According to Gerrits, the copy here immediately establishes âa strong connection with the visitor using emotive header text. Our sub-header summarises our benefits, providing a solution to keep you both safe and secure.â
Use media coverage as a source of credibility. If youâve been lucky enough to be featured on local or international newsâfor good reasons, I hopeâincluding it on your landing page, as Crash Detech does, can lend you legitimacy and overcome skepticism. (In an age of âfake news,â itâs best to go with the most reliable sources you can.)
Hearth (Industry: Home Renovation/Financing)
Image courtesy of Hearth. Click the image to access the full version.
How Hearth nails it: Keep it simple to keep visitors focused.
Hearth offers quick, affordable financing for home renovations. They also work in partnership with contractors to help connect potential customers to lenders and close more sales. Thatâs where this app comes in: it allows people to pre-qualify for a renovation loan during an on-site visit (or at any other time, really).
Why it works:
Just the essentials. If youâre a creative, it can be easy to get carried away adding bells and whistles to your landing pages. The truth is, Hearth has other pages on their site that do a lot of the persuading. This landing page has one purposeâencouraging existing subscribers to download their appâand it does that cleanly and directly.
Buttons above the fold. Itâs very common to see an app landing page that forces users to scroll to find a download link. Hearth smartly chooses to put them both near the top. They also keep them large and spaced apart to overcome the âbig hands, small deviceâ issue that plagues contractors.
Lighten the load. At Unbounce, we have a lot to say about the importance of speed. But speed is doubly important for mobile app landing pages. When you access this page on a phone, you notice how snappy it loads (in about 2 seconds). Thatâs because Hearth keeps it light for smartphone users by resisting the urge to include unnecessary content (like, for instance, an animated .gif showing the app in motion).
If you want to run the fastest mobile landing pages possible, Accelerated Mobile Pages deliver near-instant speeds and can be created in the Unbounce Builder. Read more about Unbounce and AMP landing pages.
Ibotta (Industry: Retail Rewards)
Image courtesy of Ibotta. Click the image to access the full version.
How Ibotta nails it: Use a simple page as a gateway to more mobile engagement.
Ibotta promises real cash back when you make purchases at participating retail stores. The app allows shoppers to scan receipts, link their loyalty cards, and even make purchases directly from their phones. Because thereâs a fair bit of onboarding involved, however, they use simple app landing pages like this one as gateways to a more detailed sign-up. (Also, say their name aloud for todayâs âaha!â moment.)
Why it works:
Simple doesnât mean silent. Like the example from Hearth above, Ibottaâs app landing page looks pretty basic. But just think about how much theyâre saying on this page with a couple dozen words. First, their promise is crystal clear: âEarn Cash Back on Everyday Purchases.â Then, they sweeten the deal with the promise of a bonus for signing up. Even the button reminds you that the app is free to use.
Cut it short. If you look at the whole page, then youâll notice that Ibotta only bother to include the top third of the phone here. Beyond what you can see when the page loads, in fact, thereâs nothing but the footer. This keeps the page light and focused. It also means that the option to download Ibottaâwhether you click the button or on the footer linkâis never not on the screen. Genius!
Downloading the app is just the start. For Ibotta to succeed, they need users to get aboard that sweet mobile engagement loop and start using their app on the regular. For this reason, clicking brings visitors to a more detailed sign-up page (where they can create an account using Facebook or Google) that also serves to better onboard subscribers.
EDITORâS NOTE. A mobile engagement loop is what happens when a customer is continually re-engaged after converting. It keeps people using your app long after theyâve downloaded it, which can be essential depending on your business model.
Overwolf (Industry: Gaming/esports)
Image courtesy of Overwolf. Click the image to access the full version.
Considering the size of the gaming industry, ânicheâ is definitely not the right word to describe Overwolfâs target market. But this landing page is a killer example of just how engaging a specific demographic goes beyond witty copy and sharp design. As part of a cross-promotion with 20th Century Foxâs The Kid Who Would Be King, Overwolf has crafted an experience that speaks directly to younger gamers who make up the audience of this film.
Overwolfâs Communications and Content Manager, Shay Zeldis, lays out the strategy in detail:
Itâs a page built for players of CS:GO, League of Legends, and Rocket League, with strong incentives and gaming hardware prizes, in a tested layout that increases conversions. To drive traffic and gamers who are ready to participate, we focused on community, social and video channels, with relevant materials hyping up gamers even before they land in the page.
Why it works:
Gamify your app download. This isnât just a landing page, itâs a challenge. How do you get started on your path to glory? You download Overwolfâs Game Summary app, win a match of one of three popular games, then share the results on Twitter. Itâs a brilliant way to incentivize downloading and reflects the competitive spirit of esports.
Lean into cross-promotion. The tie-in with The Kid Who Would Be King goes beyond just using a logo. The copy here blends Arthurian legend (âSet out on a magical adventureâ) with how gamers speak to one another (missions, custom games, eliminations, goals) to create a sense of fun.
Pick the right social channels. As CEO Uri Marchand put it in a recent Medium post, âbrands trying to reach gamers in the same ways they approach random website visitors quickly learn their mistake.â Overwolf, for instance, has learned to hit the community and social channels where young gamers actually congregate. For example, they created these awesome promo and reaction videos on YouTube that hype before they ever see the landing page itself.
Donât wait for your app to be discovered
Youâre a SaaS company looking for subscriptions to grow your business? Cool. An indie game designer hoping to release the next Flappy Bird? Great. Just generating ad revenue by providing a free tool? Thatâs terrific. In any case, creating a mobile-responsive app landing page is a great way to introduce yourself to an app-hungry public.
These days, thereâs an impressive variety to businesses that are out there promoting an app of some sort. Sometimes itâs the very core of what they do. Other times, itâs an add-on that enhances an existing service. For some apps, a clean download page and a tightly run PPC campaign are all thatâs needed to strike digital gold. But others require incredibly nuanced design, whip-smart workarounds, or Gary Kasparov levels of strategy.
(Iâd venture to say youâve seen all three in the examples above.)
Whatever your approach, and whatever your app is promising, youâll need to stand out from the competition. An app marketing campaign that includes a few spiffy landing pages is your best bet in kickinâ off that mobile engagement loop.
