She seemed to know exactly what to tell the ghoul to make him feel more at ease around her, despite her appearance. He smiled. “She does...Make me feel safe, I mean. Making new friends and trying to experience the world normally...it’s terrifying! But she’s always there. Always here. I’m trying as hard as I can to be normal, but I can always come home when I feel like I’m failing.”
Even if she did permanently scar him when they first met.
“Others? Oh! Yeah! More in the main part of town. This neighborhood is sorta on the fringe. All Mali’s best friends are monsters like us.”
Elk felt Brooke settle in their little hidden spot, focus trained on the space where those little gifts were left with such clockwork precision.
It’s not here yet. As odd as its body’s newest interest is, Elk didn’t mind this. It felt familiar, the watching from afar.
“I wanna see who’s leaving it all,” Brooke hummed. “I’m curious.”

Not to mention, animals, save for some vermin, hated undead folk. Like Yvain. They could sense and smell what normal people couldn’t, and all his efforts to try and pet a dog or a cat were met with biting, spitting, and scratching. He was terrified of big dogs now because of it, but…
The lovely tortoiseshell wandering without a collar the past few days up and down the street caught his eye. He started to leave food out for it at night when Mali left for work in hopes of eventually befriending it. Every day, all traces of what he left we’re gone. The food, the dish, the cup of water he left out. Hopefully Mali didn’t notice one of her china plates missing…
While he knew the cat probably didn’t eat the dishes, didn’t they hoard things sometimes, like under couches? Maybe it carried the items off in its mouth, unlikely as it seemed. When he left the plate (there was a lump of chicken breast on it. He didn’t know whether cats liked seasonings so it was only lightly salted and peppered) and water tonight, he decided to see for himself what happened.
Yvain hid only behind the window, peeking subtly through a slit in the blinds to catch a glimpse of his cat buddy.

“ i don’t actually enjoy killing. it’s messy. the blood gets everywhere. it’s just necessary sometimes. ” [abstractwatcher, in case this one interests ya more ^^]

The blonde stood face to face with someone who'd essentially just admitted to murder, potentially more than one. She wasn't with the police; hell, Alura wasn't technically affiliated with this planet at all. She'd just made a habit of sticking her nose in places it didn't belong. That didn't mean she was going to jump to conclusions, though. She had plenty of her own reasons for killing in the past.
"Okay," She calmly started, her voice level. "Are you implying you've got something to do with the disappearances going around the area? Who are you killing? Or why, if you don't mind my asking?"
She was tense, but tried not to show it in her tone.

“If anything she’d be mad at me for continuing to put the plates out when they started going missing,” he laughed softly, rubbing the back of his head.
His smile doesn’t quite falter, no, but it strains when she asked about Mali. “No, no, you wouldn’t scare her. I don’t know if she’s scared of anything, she’s fearless,” the last word is spoken with a kind of reverence. “It’s just...she’s protective, very defensive. Whatever she is is inhumanly strong, too, more than me. If you caught her by surprise in her home...well...”
He gestured to his scarred mouth. “She did this when we first met. I wasn’t quite...myself yet and I definitely needed it, but this was her trying to subdue me.”
Yvain played with his hands. “It’s not that you can’t meet her at all! But...maybe wait until I give her advanced notice first. She hasn’t hit any of my friends yet!”

He couldn’t know it was a fib. Yvain beamed.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m the same way. There’s a reason I only used it once.” He never really needed to be up early for anything anyway.
Her question next was worded in a way that gave him pause, like he had to decipher what his guest meant. The ghoul spent so little time wondering about his origins that others asking about it seemed alien. He finally answered her with a shrug.
“My roommate isn’t the one who made me. She’s, uh, the one I need to get those plates back to. I don’t know who made me, I don’t even like to think of rezzing at all, but...she found me and made me safe. She’s at work right now, so you don’t need to worry.”

To be fair, eye contact is threatening to him, too, but that was more due to his personal neuroses.
“Oh...?” He tilted his head, brows furrowed in thought as he tried to think of a good comparison in his experiences. Nothing came up, but... “I think I get it?” He made brief eye contact and waved awkwardly. “Hi there, Elk. I hope you like what I brought, too.”
As eerie as it was watching those lanky arms practically unfurl from their body, it was neat seeing someone so fascinated by a bunch of simple items. He wondered if it’s how Mali felt when he got ahold of them in the first place. “Yeah!” He said with a smile. “Well, actually, lemme just...”
He took the clock out really quick and tore off the little hammer. “You just look like you might not like loud noises. Like me.”

“Oh. Yeah.” He just misunderstood. Yvain pursed his lips somewhat awkwardly. As much as he preferred to wear his mask around others, he didn’t have time to put it on.
Even by the town standard, Brooke was a little...much.
“I-it’s the least I could do,” he finally stuttered, cracking his lips to a smile. He watched her settle into a corner before hopping up the steps. Maybe it was for the best she didn’t follow. The chains tended to put folks off. The ghoul would come back down with a box full of trinkets marked ‘DONATIONS’.
“Huh? Oh! M-my name. It’s Yvain.” He sat a comfortable distance from her and put the box down, having figured she might prefer to approach herself over having him come bounding to her corner. There were some children’s books from when he was first starting to read, some of Mali’s old, oversized clothes, a vintage alarm clock that freaked him the hell out the one time he used it, and more.
“Elk...? Like, you talk to the deer in the woods?”

“It’s okay,” he said, leaving out the part about how her ‘threat display’ would be giving him nightmares for the better part of a month. “I, uh, I get it. People make me nervous, too.”
At least inside the home was a bit more suited to someone her size (somebody Mali-sized). The furniture was a bit bigger and space between things were more pronounced to comfortably maneuver around.
He took the plate with the sandwich on it back inside before closing the door, munching on it mindlessly. Hey, if she wasn’t going to eat, he wouldn’t let it go to waste. “You can make yourself comfortable in the living room here, or come with me to my room.”

Yvain didn’t like making eye contact at the best of times, and he was straight up terrified at being stared at not long ago. Those eyes were nightmare made material for the poor ghoul, but it’s not like it was her fault!
What exactly happened to twist her up so badly? At least it was obvious that Yvain used to be a regular guy.
He doubled down, his politeness just barely overriding his nerve. “W-we can trade. If you bring me back the plates you took, I’ll...I’ll be happy to give some stuff we were, uh, just gonna give to the thrift store anyway.” Yvain stepped back to allow her room to enter, even as the voice in his head screamed ‘danger! danger!’.

They didn’t sound dangerous to him. Maybe he was overreacting, being rude even, to hide so pathetically behind the door. He didn’t come out again just yet, though.
“I was leaving the food out for...for a stray. I thought you were that stray...” He thought for a moment, looking Brooke up and down with pity and lingering fear. “I used to be human, too. Granted, I don’t really remember anything about it...but plates are still just plates to me.”
He’s have to ask if they—if she had Mali’s china.
The ghoul finally got up, sucked in a breath, and opened the door once more to face her. “I’ve, uh, got some old things I don’t use anymore. They’re better than plates. Do you...want to come in?”
