HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOST FIRST CALDER CUP PLAYOFF GAME SINCE 2015
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack will host their first Calder Cup Playoff game at the XL Center since May 27th, 2015, this evening. The Wolf Pack welcome the Springfield Thunderbirds to town for Game Two of their best-of-three Atlantic Division First Round series. Hartford leads the series 1-0 and will advance to the Atlantic Division Semifinals with a victory. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. Tale of The Tape: The Wolf Pack and Thunderbirds met 12 times during the 2022-23 regular season, with the Thunderbirds winning nine of those games and collecting points in ten of the 12 outings. They posted a record of 9-2-0-1. The Wolf Pack, meanwhile, accumulated points in five of the 12 meetings, posting a record of 3-7-0-2. After only winning once at the MassMutual Center in six tries during the regular season, the Wolf Pack scored a dominant 6-1 victory in Game One in Springfield on Wednesday night. Lauri Pajuniemi opened the scoring 3:37 into the contest, giving Hartford a lead they never lost. Both Zac Jones and Pajuniemi would strike in the second period immediately after successful penalty kills. Jones was sprung in on a breakaway at 6:02, burying the eventual game-winner fresh out of the box. Pajuniemi also found himself on a breakaway after serving a minor penalty. He snapped home his second goal of the game at 10:43, making it 3-0. Blake Hillman made it 4-0 at 19:54, taking a backdoor pass from Bobby Trivigno and firing home his first goal as a member of the Wolf Pack. Both Ryan Carpenter and Ty Emberson would tack on goals in the third period, while Adam Gaudette scored the T-Birds' lone goal on the powerplay at 11:44. This is the first playoff series between the Wolf Pack and Thunderbirds. Hartford previously played three playoff series against the Springfield Falcons (1999, 2000, 2003), posting a series record of 2-1. Wolf Pack Outlook: The Wolf Pack, despite having eleven players make their Calder Cup Playoff debut, opened the postseason in style on Wednesday night. Both Emberson (1 g, 2 a) and Tanner Fritz (3 a) scored three points in the victory. In addition, Frtiz's three assists tied the franchise playoff record for assists in a game. He is the 21st player to record three helpers in a playoff game for the club and the first since Chris Bourque did it on May 15th, 2015. May 15th, 2015, also marks the last time the Wolf Pack won a Calder Cup Playoff game before Wednesday night. Dylan Garand made 24 saves in his professional playoff debut, picking up his first Calder Cup Playoff victory. Pajuniemi also dazzled in his debut, scoring his North American career's first two playoff goals. Fourteen different Wolf Pack players recorded a positive +/- differential in Game One, with Emberson leading the way with a +5 rating. Jones, meanwhile, was credited with the game-winning goal. It was his first Calder Cup Playoff game-winner. Emberson (1 g, 2 a) and Fritz (3 a) lead the Wolf Pack in playoff scoring with three points each through one game. Pajuniemi's two goals pace the club in that department. Thunderbirds Outlook: The defending Eastern Conference Champions must win tonight to keep their season alive. The Thunderbirds did not face elimination in last spring's Calder Cup Playoffs until the Eastern Conference Final against the Laval Rocket. They swept their first two series, defeating both the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Charlotte Checkers in the Atlantic Division Semifinals and Final, respectively. As a result, the T-Birds had a bye through the First Round in 2022. Gaudette's goal at 11:44 of the third period was his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal in his playoff debut. Brady Lyle and Nikita Alexandrov were credited with the assists. The T-Birds penalty kill was strong in Game One, killing all three Hartford powerplays. In 13 games against Hartford this season, the Thunderbirds have successfully killed 88.64% of Wolf Pack powerplays. Game Information: WATCH: AHLTV LISTEN: Mixlr Play-by-play voice of the Wolf Pack, Alex Thomas, will have 'Wolf Pack Pregame' starting live at 6:50 p.m. on both AHLTV and Mixlr. If necessary, Game Three of this Atlantic Division First Round series will take place tomorrow, April 22nd, at 7:05 p.m. at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.
HARTFORD WOLF PACK DESTROY SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS IN GAME ONE
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Hartford Wolf Pack received three-point games from Ty Emberson and Tanner Fritz, two goals from Lauri Pajuniemi, 24 saves from Dylan Garand, and put forth a total sixty-minute effort in a 6-1 win in Game One over the Springfield Thunderbirds. The Wolf Pack, who picked the right time for their best game of the season, can wrap up the series at the XL Center on Friday. Puck drop is at 7:05 PM. In the third period, the Pack closed out Game 1 with an early tally to make it 5-0. Will Cullye was at the left side of the net and shuffled a pass out to Ryan Carpenter, who was down on his left knee in a shooter's position. Carpenter popped his first postseason goal this season and 12th career AHL playoff goal at 3:35. Carpenter's exuberance at the goal prompted a strong fist pump. Defensively, the Wolf Pack quickly extinguished any thought Springfield may have had thought of making a comeback with their foot firmly on the gas pedal. The only Thunderbirds tally in the contest came on the power play. It ended a PK kill streak of 29 straight for the Pack. Righthanded shooting Adam Gaudette put a shot off his back foot and put it past Garand at 11:44. BEST DEFENSE IS A STRONG OFFENSE The Pack kept the offensive pressure on with a hat trick bid by Pajuniemi that Hofer stopped with his blocker before Adam Clendening had a drive stopped. Garand faced spaced-out activity in the first two periods but was tested in the third with the expected pushback as Nikita Alexandrov was stopped. Then down the stretch, Garland stopped Matt Peca, Gaudette twice, and then Martin Frk. Springfield Head Coach Drew Bannister pulled Hofer with 4:21 left. The Wolf Pack did everything incredibly well. Garand tried for the empty net goal but came up short. The Pack finally tacked on the sixth and final goal as Emberson launched a 200-foot flip shot that found the back of the empty net at 18:38. It clinched his third point of the night for both he and Fritz and the final score. SECOND PERIOD The second period saw the Pack control the pace of the game. Coming out of the penalty box, Zac Jones was wide open. He took a backhanded pass on the left wing from Will Lockwood, went to the forehand, and tucked it around Hofer's right pad at 6:02. It gave the Pack a 2-0 lead. The Pack penalty kill held Springfield without a shot, and the MassMutual crowd was audibly groaning and irritated with their Thunderbirds. The Pack played quality defense and were counter-attacking at will. FIRST PERIOD Frk was stopped early, followed at 1:20 by Anton Blidh, who fed Blake Hillman. He was stopped. Blidh had a solid chance on a turnaround just off an offensive zone draw. The Pack made it 3-0 as Pajuniemi registered his second goal of the night, the second time that a player had just exited the penalty box. The whole play came off a Blidh block shot that left him prone on the ice. The puck caromed off him right to Pajuniemi. The shot hurt Blidh, who went down the runway back to the locker room afterward. He returned 15 minutes later. On the next shift, Springfield’s Tyler Tucker tried some rabbit punches on Pajuniemi, earning him a minor. Springfield’s Matt Highmore was left enraged, and the crowd was confused by an odd delay of game call, but the Pack was not about to turn down the five-on-three power play, confusing as it might have been. Carpenter went wide with a backhander. Another strange call for hooking to Turner Elson left him bewildered and frustrated. Referees Jim Curtin and Mike Dietrich gave him four minutes for the hooking call and then tacked on unsportsmanlike conduct. With 13:30 left, Hugh McGing was stopped by Garand, but Blake Hillman was cross-checked from behind into the net. It earned Will Bitten a penalty, and a small scrum ensued. FIRST PERIOD In the first period, during the first five minutes, forechecked the Thunderbirds hard. They outshot them and scored first to level an early dent in Hofer’s armor. Pajuniemi was the recipient of a perfect tape-to-tape pass from the left-wing boards by Emberson. He moved in and from thirty-feet out, fired it over Hofer on the blocker side, ending his personal shutout streak of 206 minutes against the Wolf Pack. The perfect road period began with strong forechecking from Bobby Trivigno and Karl Henriksson. Eight minutes in, Trivigno went down the right wing was stopped. A sterling opening 20 minutes for the Pack included 11 shots and they held the Thunderbirds to just two shots, equaling a season-low mark in Bridgeport in a 9-0 win.  LINES: Cullye-Carpenter-Elson Gettinger-Edström-Lockwood Henriksson-Sýkora-Trivigno Fritz-Pajuniemi-Blidh Jones-Emberson Hillman-Scanlin Clendening-Kalynuk Garand Gahagen #35 SCRATCHES: -Talyn Boyko #40 -Matt Rempe (upper body, day-to-day) -Louie Roehl #4 (healthy) -Bryce McConnell-Barker #8 (healthy) -Brett Berard #27 (healthy) -Cooper Zech #37 (healthy) -Matt Robertson (upper body, out for the first round of the playoffs) -Patrick Khordorenko (season-ending shoulder surgery). -C.J. Smith (hip area surgery done for the season) NOTES: The USA U-18 Team is about to embark on the World U-18 championships in Basel and Ajoie, Switzerland, on April 20-23. Finland named their roster. The team is coached by former Yale assistant Dan Muse and one of his assistants is ex-Pack, Chad Kolarik. Players include former Mid-Fairfield U-16 team players Sal Guzzo and Ryan Fine, who played together at Don Bosco Prep (NJPREP). The Canadian U-18 squad coaches are ex-Springfield Falcon coach Jeff Truitt (Prince Albert-WHL), and one of his assistants is an ex-Danbury Trasher, Bruce Richardson (Blaineville-Boisbrand-QMJHL). The XL Center had a tough day today, despite the Wolf Pack playoff appearance.  On Monday, the long-time supervisor of the night cleaning crew, Pat Rudolph, passed away after a brief illness. Pat was always polite and kind. Sadly, she joins a sad club of  XL employees over 50 years of age to suffer from or pass from some form of cancer. RIP to Pat, and may God comfort your family during this difficult and painful time. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME   Read the full article

HARTFORD WOLF PACK SMOKE SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS IN CALDER CUP PLAYOFF GAME 1
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Hartford Wolf Pack played their first Calder Cup Playoff game since 2015 on Wednesday night, traveling to Springfield to take on the rival Thunderbirds. Defenseman Ty Emberson and forward Tanner Fritz both scored three points, pacing the Hartford offense in a 6-1 Game One victory over the Thunderbirds. Zac Jones potted his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal 6:02 into the middle stanza, fresh out of the penalty box. Freed from an interference minor, Jones took a pass from Will Lockwood and sprinted into the Thunderbirds' zone on a breakaway. Jones went backhand to forehand, dekeing Joel Hofer out of the net and stuffing home the eventual game-winning goal. Emberson also picked up an assist on the tally, his second point in a three-point outing. Hartford opened the scoring just 3:37 into the game, as Lauri Pajuniemi fired home his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal. Tanner Fritz sent a pass across the ice to Pajuniemi in the right-wing circle, where the second-year forward collected the puck. Pajuniemi quickly fired a shot that beat Hofer, giving the Pack a lead they never lost. Jones extended the lead 6:02 into the second period and sprung in on a breakaway after being freed from the penalty box. Just over two minutes later, at 8:37, Pajuniemi was whistled for a hooking minor, giving the Thunderbirds another powerplay opportunity. Once again, the Wolf Pack got a kill, and they got a breakaway immediately after. Anton Blidh fired a pass to Pajuniemi, who burst in on a breakaway and lasered a shot by Hofer to make it 3-0 at 10:43. Hartford didn’t stop there, making it 4-0 in the final ten seconds of the stanza. Bobby Trivigno corralled a loose puck behind the Springfield net and sent a backdoor pass to Blake Hillman. Hillman sent a shot to the net that trickled across the goal line despite a terrific effort from Hofer. The goal was Hillman’s first career Calder Cup Playoff goal and first goal as a member of the Wolf Pack. The Wolf Pack made it 5-0 3:42 into the final frame, as Will Cuylle sent a centering pass to Ryan Carpenter in the slot. Carpenter rifled a shot that cleanly beat Hofer, essentially putting the game away. The Thunderbirds finally broke Dylan Garand’s shutout bid at 11:44, as Adam Gaudette blasted a one-timer home on the fourth powerplay of the night for the home side. The powerplay goal snapped a streak of 29 successful kills for the Wolf Pack, dating back to March 26th. With the Thunderbirds pressing to add on some offense late, Emberson fired a full ice shot into the empty net at 18:38 to cement the victory and give him his first career Calder Cup Playoff goal. Garand made 24 saves in the victory, his first career Calder Cup Playoff victory in his playoff debut. Fritz ended the night with three assists, while Emberson also scored three points (1 g, 2 a). The Pack is back at the XL Center for Calder Cup Playoff hockey for the first time since 2015 this Friday night for Game Two against the Thunderbirds. HARTFORD WOLF PACK LOSE SEASON FINALE TO SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings SPRINGFIELD, MA - Joel Hofer's 35-save effort at the MassMutual Center led the Springfield Thunderbirds to a 1-0 shutout win over the Hartford Wolf Pack, ending the team's eight-game winning streak. The shutout was the fourth in 12 games for the T-Birds against the Pack this season. The loss by the Wolf Pack locks them into fifth place in the Atlantic Division and guarantees the Wolf Pack will play on the road. Who they will play is still to be determined. If Springfield loses their final game against the Providence Bruins at Amica Pavilion on Sunday, the Pack will play the T-Birds in the Best-of-Three series. The Charlotte Checkers' 5-4 overtime win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and a Springfield win could make for a more difficult first-round opponent for Hartford. Should the Pack face the Checkers, Charlotte would host Hartford for all three games because of the travel issues at the Bojangles Coliseum. Hofer has been kryptonite for the Wolf Pack. As a result, the Jonny Brodzinski-less Wolf Pack saw their ability to score goals and generate offense take a serious hit, but undoubtedly not due to a lack of effort. THIRD PERIOD The Wolf Pack threw eleven shots at Hofer in the third period but were held off the scoreboard. At 2:14, Bobby Trivigno took a Springfield turnover and tried to jam it past Hofer, but he covered the short side post. A little over a minute later, Will Bitten had a net-front chance that Dylan Garand gobbled up. Then at 4:56, Matt Peca, the QU grad, was stopped, followed by a solid net front play that led to Edström's bid for his second goal in as many games at 6:39 was rejected. Peca had a golden chance at 9:45 with a rebound of a Steve Santini shot that came right to his stick, but he hit the net with the left side wide-open. Thirty seconds later, Tanner Fritz was stopped by a Hofer glove save. Seconds later, Lauri Pajuniemi saw Hofer make a blocker save. Then Hugh McGing tried to get Springfield a two-goal cushion from the slot, but Garand turned that aside. At 18:07, Wyatt Kalynuk's left point drive was repelled by Hofer, with Anton Blidh battling Tyler Tucker on his doorstep. Cullye, then Carpenter had a backhander on the left-wing side hit the side of the net. Drew Callin in the defensive zone clipped Tim Gettinger up high, but no call was made. Tucker intercepted a Carpenter feed before Hofer made a blocker save to deny Zac Jones as the Pack went with the extra attacker. SECOND PERIOD The second period was a playoff-like defensive struggle. The first shot for the Pack came at 3:15 as Pajuniemi got in position for a shot with Fritz coming down the left wing. However, he was stopped by Hofer with Blidh in front battling with ex-Pack Hunter Skinner. The team's defense limited Springfield to one shot by Matt Highmore. At 15:16, Adam Clendening fired a shot from the right point with Trivigno in front, battling the much bigger Tucker. Brandon Scanlin made an excellent recovery to avoid a Greg Printz breakaway. Then Mathias Laferriere made one of the few second-period Thunderbird shots at 18:05. Springfield's best opportunity showed up on the state sheet as Highmore was right in front and chipped the puck that went over Garand and hit the crossbar. Garland kept it out as he was able to sweep it away. FIRST PERIOD The first period was an intense skating affair, with each goalie making crucial saves, but Springfield came away with the only goal. What has become a rarity in the last month, Adam Gaudette turned a Fritz neutral zone turnover into a breakaway on the left wing. He took a pass from Scott Perunovich and went forehand-to-backhand on Garand before depositing his 27th goal of the season at 17:29. As he's done all season, the Winnipeg-born Hofer frustrated the Wolf Pack. Pajuniemi had solid scoring chances in the first. There was a one-timer at 7:01, Will Cullye at 7:55, and Pajuniemi again at 8:30 on a one-timer on the left wing. At 9:18, Clendening had a chance off a nice behind-the-back pass from Lockwood. Elson missed an open net, and Hofer's right pad stopped Trivigno at the back door. Dyland Garand had a solid period stopping Bitten and McGing in the first three minutes. LINES: Cullye-Carpenter-Elson Henriksson-Lockwood- Trivigno Fritz-Pajuniemi- Adam Sýkora Gettinger- Adam Edström-Blidh Jones-Emberson Hillman-Scanlin Clendening-Kalynuk Garand Boyko #40 SCRATCHES: Matt Rempe (healthy) Louie Roehl #4 (healthy) Brett Berard #27 (healthy) Bryce McConnell-Barker #8 (healthy) Easton Brodzinski #23 (healthy) Matt Lohin #18 (healthy) Matt Robertson (upper body, out for the first round of the playoffs) Patrick Khordorenko (season-ending shoulder surgery). C.J. Smith (hip area surgery done for the season) NOTES Despite being recalled on paper, Ryan Lohin never showed up in Hartford. Instead, he opted to go home. Years of injuries and being on recall earlier, where it netter him two games, might indicate that Lohin is considering hanging them up. Lohin not being in Hartford is what necessitated Jonny Brodzinski's brother Easton being recalled from Jacksonville yesterday. The Checkers had a three-goal third period and an OT winner by ex-Pack Anthony Bitetto to finish their season. The brand-new Calgary Wranglers clinched the AHL overall title with 104 points. In addition, 51 wins make them the first team since the 1992-'93 Binghamton Rangers to have a 50-plus win season. The defending Calder Cup champs, soon to be the independent Chicago Wolves, won 4-1. They had a four-goal first period against the Grand Rapids Griffins and were aided by a goal and assist by ex-Pack Malte Stromwall. The only Griffins goal was by ex-Pack Danny O'Regan. SOMMER CALLS IT A CAREER San Diego's head coach Roy Sommer, the all-time winningest coach in AHL history, announced his retirement before the Gulls at the last game of the season. One of his best traits, Sommer was one of the first true born and bred California players in the mid-1970s,  a generation before it was regular to see California on a player's address. Sommer started his hockey journey in the late 1970s (1978-79) as a member of the Pacific Hockey League (PHL) Spokane (WA) Flyers, playing against the legendary Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe. At next year's AHL All-Star game at the Tech CU Center in San Jose, he should be inducted into the  AHL Hall of Fame for the Oakland, CA native. He teamed up with ex-Ranger-New England/Hartford Whaler Nick Fotiu as a coaching tandem with the Kentucky Thoroughbreds. NIGEL DAWES RETIRES The King is dead - metaphorically speaking. Ex-Pack Nigel Dawes, 38, has ended his playing career in Germany. 'The King' reference refers to a caustic and off-handed remark about his appearance as a guest on Wolf Pack radio broadcast years ago. He remarked in New York, you get a watch for being a guest, but in Hartford, you get Burger King coupons. He spent most of his career with Kazakhstan in the KHL, even in several international tournaments like the World Championships and Olympics representing them. With the outbreak of the water in Ukraine, he played the last two years in the German DEL with Adler Mannheim. Out with old Pack, in with new Pack. With Dawes retiring, reports in Germany state after a year off of not playing, John Gilmour may be close to signing with Adler for next season. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

HARTFORD WOLF PACK DROP 1-0 DECISION TO SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Hartford Wolf Pack put forth a valiant effort on Saturday night, outshooting the rival Springfield Thunderbirds 35-21 in the regular season finale. However, a late first-period goal was enough for the home side, as the T-Birds claimed a 1-0 shutout victory at the MassMutual Center. Adam Gaudette opened and closed the scoring 17:29 into the game, potting his 27th goal of the season. After a turnover in the neutral zone, Scott Perunovich sent a pass to Gaudette, who entered the Hartford zone and gained a partial breakaway. Gaudette went forehand to backhand and lifted the puck over a sprawling Dylan Garand for the game's only tally. The sides played a relatively even first 40 minutes, with both goaltenders making highlight-reel saves. Springfield's Joel Hofer made 19 saves through the first 40 minutes, including a terrific stop on Bobby Trivigno off a backdoor pass. Garand was also strong, turning aside 15 Thunderbirds bids in the opening two periods. Both penalty kills were busy as well. The Wolf Pack killed both of the Thunderbirds' powerplays this night, with their final one coming in the second period. The kills give Hartford 26 straight successful penalty kills to end the regular season. In the third period, the Wolf Pack fired everything they could on Hofer, but the All-Star netminder stopped everything he saw. The Wolf Pack fired 16 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, outshooting the T-Birds 16-5. Hofer, however, made 16 saves to steal the victory. It was Hofer's third shutout of the season against Hartford and the team's fourth clean slate in twelve games against the Pack. The Wolf Pack will begin the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs next week. Hartford's First Round opponent and game dates and times are still to be determined. HARTFORD WOLF PACK REGULAR SEASON FINALE
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Hartford Wolf Pack conclude the 2022-23 regular season tonight with a short trip to Massachusetts to face their rivals, the Springfield Thunderbirds. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr. Tale of The Tape: This is the 12th and final meeting of the season between the Wolf Pack and the Thunderbirds. It is also the sixth and final meeting of the regular season at the MassMutual Center between the potential playoff foes. The Thunderbirds have enjoyed great success in the season series, including a 4-0 decision in the last meeting on March 25th in Hartford. Nikita Alexandrov opened the scoring 14:14 into the game, tipping home a centering pass from Scott Perunovich for his 14th goal of the season. The tally would stand as the eventual game-winner. Adam Gaudette extended the lead to 2-0 10:32 into the middle stanza, while Mathias Laferriere ended the intrigue just 66 seconds later at 11:38 with a powerplay marker. Hugh McGing ended the scoring 14:44 into the third period, firing home his 13th goal of the season. Garret Sparks made 21 saves for the shutout victory, his first win as a member of the Thunderbirds. The Wolf Pack are 3-6-0-2 against the Thunderbirds this season, with their most recent triumph coming on March 24th by a score of 6-5. In addition, the Wolf Pack are 1-3-0-1 at the MassMutual Center this season. Meanwhile, the Thunderbirds are 8-2-0-1 in the head-to-head series and 4-1-0-0 at home. Wolf Pack Outlook: The Wolf Pack won their eighth straight game on Friday night, blanking the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a score of 4-0 at the XL Center. Tim Gettinger opened the scoring 15:58 into the game, as a Lauri Pajuniemi shot went off his right leg and into the goal for a powerplay marker that stood as the game-winner. Turner Elson tacked on the insurance 6:27 into the second period, taking a centering feed from Ryan Carpenter in the slot. Elson would score again 4:32 into the final stanza, steering a pass from Cuylle home for his 17th goal of the season. It was Elson's second straight game with two goals. Adam Edström finished the night off with his first career AHL goal 13:24 into the third period, undressing a Penguin before ripping a shot by the blocker of goaltender Joel Blomqvist. Louis Domingue made 28 saves for his fourth shutout of the season. The win was his ninth consecutive victory. Hartford's current eight-game winning streak is the second longest in franchise history. The franchise's longest winning streak is nine games. That occurred during the 2004-05 season. On Friday night, the parent New York Rangers (NHL) recalled Domingue, forwards Jonny Brodzinski and Jake Leschyshyn, and defenseman Libor Hájek. Brodzinski leads the Wolf Pack in points with 48 (21 g, 27 a) in 47 games. Cuylle, meanwhile, leads the team in goals with 25. With Brodzinski recalled, Cuylle also leads the active Wolf Pack in scoring with 45 points (25 g, 20 a). Thunderbirds Outlook: The Thunderbirds fell behind early last night against the Providence Bruins but stormed back to score seven unanswered goals and take a 7-2 decision on home ice. Georgii Merkulov and Chris Wagner scored for the Bruins in the opening frame, giving them a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes. However, the T-Birds awoke for the final forty and ran away with two key points. First, Matthew Peca scored 44 seconds into the middle stanza to get the Thunderbirds on the board, then McGing popped home the equalizer 12 seconds later at the 56-second mark. Gaudette then gave the T-Birds a lead they never lost at the 19:05 mark. SPRINGFIELD THUNDERBIRDS BLANK HARTFORD WOLF PACK
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – After a thrilling comeback victory in last night's contest over the Springfield Thunderbirds, the Hartford Wolf Pack returned to the XL Center on Saturday night looking for the weekend sweep. However, the Pack couldn't figure out veteran netminder Garret Sparks, who made 21 saves in a 4-0 decision for the T-Birds. Nikita Alexandrov potted the eventual game-winner for the Thunderbirds just over fourteen minutes into the opening stanza. Alexandrov deflected a pass from Scott Perunovich past the glove of Dylan Garand to give Springfield a lead they would not give up. The goal stood as Alexandrov's second game-winning tally in the campaign. The Thunderbirds tacked on a pair of goals midway through the second period. Mathias Laferriere and Adam Gaudette took a two-on-one rush opportunity into the Hartford zone. Laferriere opted to shoot the puck, which Garand denied. However, Garand couldn't hang onto the rebound, and Gaudette buried the puck into the Wolf Pack net to push the Springfield lead to two. Laferriere added a goal of his own just over a minute later. With Jake Leschyshyn in the box for interference, one of just two powerplays in the contest, Laferriere tipped a Matthew Highmore pass into the Hartford net, pushing the T-Birds lead to three. Highmore's assist was his team-leading 41st of the season. The Wolf Pack got a powerplay opportunity after Greg Printz was called for hooking at 3:38 of the third period, but Hartford could not capitalize on the man advantage. Hugh McGing capped off the scoring at 14:44 of the final stanza, lighting the lamp with a one-timer from just outside the right circle. HARTFORD WOLF PACK PREPARE FOR HUGE WEEKEND
Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack open their fourth and final three-in-three set of the season tonight as they welcome the Springfield Thunderbirds to town for the latest installment of the 'I-91 Rivalry'. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and coverage is available on both AHLTV and Mixlr.  Tale of The Tape: This is the tenth of twelve meetings between the Wolf Pack and the Thunderbirds this season. The sides will meet Saturday night at the XL Center at 6:00 p.m. to wrap up a back-to-back set. The season series concludes on April 15th at the MassMutual Center. The Thunderbirds have won three in a row in the season series, recently taking a 4-2 decision in stunning fashion on March 17th in Hartford. Anton Blidh and Will Cuylle scored just 4:32 and 5:55 into the game to put the Wolf Pack ahead 2-0. That score would be through forty minutes, as Hartford largely controlled the game. The Thunderbirds managed only five shots in the third period but made them count. Will Bitten scored at 6:21 and 11:41 of the frame, potting each of the club's first two shots to tie the affair. Martin Frk blasted a point shot that was tipped by Matthew Highmore for the eventual game-winner on the powerplay at 14:39, while Bitten completed his hat trick into an empty net. The Wolf Pack are just 1-2-0-1 at home against the Thunderbirds this season and 2-5-0-2 against the club overall. The Thunderbirds, meanwhile, have points in eight of the first nine meetings with a record of 7-1-0-1.  Wolf Pack Outlook: In their last outing, the Wolf Pack scored a massive 3-2 victory on Saturday night against the Bridgeport Islanders. Cole Bardreau scored just 58 seconds in for the Isles, burying the night's first shot. However, the Pack settled things down and used a three-goal outburst in the second period to nab two points. Jonny Brodzinski tied the game 29 seconds into the second period on a powerplay, then Ryan Carpenter put Hartford ahead at 7:54 following a turnover in the Bridgeport zone. Brodzinski tacked on his second goal of the night at 17:06, converting on a partial breakaway. Ruslan Iskhakov got the Isles within one at 1:58 of the third, but the Hartford penalty kill would go three-for-three in the period, and Louis Domingue made ten saves to secure the win. On Tuesday, the Wolf Pack signed forward Brett Berard to an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of the season. Berard also inked a three-year, entry-level deal with the parent New York Rangers (NHL) that starts with the 2023-24 season. He will wear #27. Cuylle leads the Wolf Pack in both points with 37 (21 g, 16 a) and goals with 21.   Thunderbirds Outlook: The Thunderbirds dropped their second straight game on Sunday, 3-2, in a shootout to the Providence Bruins in Rhode Island. The loss completed a 1-1-0-1 weekend for the club, who was swept in a home-and-home by the B's. Adam Gaudette opened the scoring 7:10 into the second period, giving the club a lead they took into the final frame. Joona Koppanen struck at 10:02 and 17:21, however, putting the Bruins in the driver's seat. Mathias Laferriere tied the game with a powerplay goal at 19:00, securing a big point for the T-Birds. However, overtime solved nothing, and the sides went to a shootout, where Koppanen completed his afternoon with the dagger in the third round. Vadim Zherenko made 53 saves in the shootout loss for the T-Birds. Zherenko is 6-0-2 in his last eight starts for the club. Frk leads the T-Birds in both points with 56 (27 g, 29 a) and goals with 27. His 27 goals are tied for fifth most in the entire AHL, two off the league lead.  Game Information:  WATCH: AHLTV LISTEN: Mixlr Play-by-play voice of the Wolf Pack, Alex Thomas, will have 'Wolf Pack Pregame' starting live at 6:45 p.m. on both AHLTV and Mixlr. The Pack is back at the XL Center tomorrow night, March 25th, when the Thunderbirds return to town for the final time this season. The puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at hartfordwolfpack.com. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article
