“CHIEF SEATTLE’S GRANDCHILDREN”

In 2017, inspired by the 53-acre Schmitz Preserve Park in West Seattle—one of the last stands of old-growth forest in Seattle—roaming artist Addison Karl reimagined a Pacific Northwest without “Manifest Destiny development and encroachment.” Karl is himself a registered Chickasaw and Choctaw and has strong ties to Seattle established on his global artistic pilgrimage. On SODO Track, the two-mile transit corridor on 5th Ave S, Karl portrayed Duwamish tribe members, Northwest Basket Weaver and great granddaughter of Chief Seattle for whom the city is named, Mary Lou Slaughter and her son, wood carver Michael Halady. As transit passengers catch a fleeting glimpse of Karl’s work SODO track organizers hope it serves as a reminder of how fleeting forests could be as well, without our care.  @addisonkarl  @sodotrack

FRANK MYRON HENRY, 1934–2013

Born in Long Beach, California, Henry's mother moved him to Phoenix just a few years later. It was while attending Phoenix College in the 1950s that he met Frank Lloyd Wright and the course of his life was set as he became the first person to receive a Bachelor of Architecture degree in Arizona. At the end of a 40-year career he served on as a member of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and as Studio Master emeritus for the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture he taught Hand Rendering and Perspective Drawing. In 2015 Berlin-based artist, Karl Addison, memorialized two creative icons of Phoenix—96-year-old sculptor John Waddell and Frank Henry—for 3rd St N creative agency, Kitchen Sink Studios. Utilizing color techniques developed over years of printmaking Addison's finely controlled hatch-lines—with each line important individually and to the whole—reflect his interest in the "social construct of individual versus community."  @addisonkarl  @kitchensinkstudios

Here is a detail shot of the wall I last posted, a collab between @addisonkarl and @bimmer_t. It turns that this collaboration came about after Addison had already spent a month working on the wall to the left of this piece. I thought it was one maaaaaaaaaassive piece, turns out it's two really, big pieces. Love out loud. Detail of a bigger picture. The face and front of #elpida in Thessaloniki, Greece. This huge factory was painted in collaboration with my cosmic friend @billycolours with help from @addisonkarl all made possible by @aptarts and the hard work of @samystan Our time in Greece was brief, but it felt very good to be actively contributing towards the living conditions of some beautiful displaced humans. I feel that painting silly things on a wall can change the whole vibe and energy of a space. We are products of our environment, and our environment is a product of us.
