A growing number of Americans are going hungry (Washington Post) It was 5 a.m., not a hint of sun in the Houston sky, as Randy Young and his mom pulled into the line for a free Thanksgiving meal. They were three hours early. Hundreds of cars and trucks already idled in front of them outside NRG Stadium. This was where Young worked before the pandemic. He was a stadium cook. Now, after losing his job and struggling to get by, he and his 80-year-old mother hoped to get enough food for a holiday meal. More Americans are going hungry now than at any point during the deadly coronavirus pandemic, according to a Post analysis of new federal data—a problem created by an economic downturn that has tightened its grip on millions of Americans and compounded by government relief programs that expired or will terminate at the end of the year. Experts say it is likely that there’s more hunger in the United States today than at any point since 1998, when the Census Bureau began collecting comparable data about households’ ability to get enough food. One in 8 Americans reported they sometimes or often didn’t have enough food to eat in the past week, hitting nearly 26 million American adults, an increase several times greater than the most comparable pre-pandemic figure, according to Census Bureau survey data collected in late October and early November. That number climbed to more than 1 in 6 adults in households with children. “It’s been driven by the virus and the unpredictable government response,” said Jeremy K. Everett, executive director of the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty in Waco, Tex.
Tweet on spare change generates big money for virus aid (AP) Andy Larsen is a sports writer, but with so many games scratched during the pandemic he has spent a lot of time digging into coronavirus data and its sobering implications. Then on Monday, while he was sorting his spare change—some from a childhood piggy bank shaped like SpongeBob SquarePants—it struck him: Other people in Utah could use the money more than he could. His composed a tweet to his nearly 27,000 followers, hoping to quickly find someone who could use the $165.84. Within a minute, someone offered to essentially double his donation with a deposit into his Venmo account. Then someone else pitched in, and another. It kept snowballing as Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox retweeted it, calling the effort “very cool.” “I figured I would help a couple families with Thanksgiving, or a family with three kids buy Christmas presents,” said the 29-year-old Larsen, who covers the NBA’s Utah Jazz for the Salt Lake Tribune. By Wednesday, he had collected more than $52,000. With the pandemic keeping people from getting together in a big way for the holiday, the online effort became a chance to conjure a sense of community, a feeling of being part of something larger. “It felt like it took on a life of its own,” he said.
How College Students Are Helping Each Other Survive (NYT) At many colleges and universities, from underfunded institutions to top-tier private colleges, many students have found themselves unable to meet basic needs during the coronavirus pandemic. Financial insecurity, previously accelerated by rising tuition costs and living expenses, has become even more acute because of the closure of campuses, loss of jobs and slashing of budgets. In response, across the country, students have created mutual aid networks: raising and redistributing tens of thousands of dollars to help their peers cover housing, medical costs, food and other essentials. Generally, students send in requests for small amounts of money, and network organizers will send them the funds using payment apps like Venmo. At its core, mutual aid is a form of charity in which neighbors or peers work together to help each other out on a case-by-case basis. The aid networks are entirely student-run, operating outside of any official college administration oversight. At Georgetown University, students donate cash to a central Venmo account, according to one of the founders, Megan Huynh, 20. “Then we have a funding request form for students in need—both undergrads and graduate students—to request basically like a micro-grant of $50 to $100,” she said. “And we just send them the money, no questions asked.”
Pandemic gave locals fleeting taste of a tourist-free Hawaii (AP) Line-Noue Memea Kruse lives on Oahu’s famed North Shore, where marveling at sea turtles, epic waves and sunsets that paint the sky orange and purple are a must for many tourists in Hawaii. After the islands required a two-week quarantine for travelers amid the coronavirus pandemic, Kruse rejoiced in the little things as the number of tourists dramatically dropped. It took her 35 minutes to drive to Walmart, instead of spending hours stuck in traffic as tourists gawked at turtles on the beach. Before the pandemic, as many as 30,000 visitors arrived a day. That dropped to several thousand after the quarantine mandate. “What the pandemic did was give us all a moment to pause, a number of months, to rethink everything,” said state Sen. J. Kalani English. “What it proves for us is that old model of tourism, which is, you know, mass bring 11 million visitors a year, didn’t work and people were tired of it.”
Macron’s Rightward Tilt, Seen in New Laws, Sows Wider Alarm in France (NYT) A rightward push by the French government is alarming civil liberties advocates in France and raising questions about President Emmanuel Macron’s positioning ahead of an expected electoral challenge from the far right in 2022. Propelled by a national wave of anxiety following recent terrorist attacks by Islamist extremists, two proposed new laws underscore what critics have called an alarming drift toward repression in government policy. One bill, which passed an initial hurdle in the lower house of Parliament, the National Assembly, on Tuesday, restricts the public filming of the police, a step civic groups consider a shield for brutality at a moment when law enforcement has come under more scrutiny for aggressive tactics, often from citizens armed with cellphone cameras. The other, still to be considered by Parliament, seeks further restrictions against Islamism as the French government has defined it, reaching into some aspects of Muslim life. This bill would ban home-schooling, flag in a database those deemed to “excuse” terrorist acts, subject organizations that receive government subsidies to a test of allegiance to “the values of the republic,” and increase strictures against polygamy, which is already illegal. In tilting right, Mr. Macron, a shape-shifting centrist who came out of the Socialist Party, has placed himself largely in step with public opinion.
German restrictions to last until March? (Reuters) Germany will probably have to stick with measures to dampen the pandemic into January, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, while her chief of staff suggested that restrictions might be needed until March. “Given the high number of infections, we assume that the restrictions which are in place before Christmas will continue to be valid until the start of January, certainly for most parts of Germany,” Merkel told parliament.
It was never easy being an interfaith couple in India. Now some states are making it harder. (Washington Post) Marrying across religious lines has always been a challenge in India, a vast multifaith democracy where the pull of family and tradition remains strong. Now politicians in India’s ruling party are contemplating laws to thwart such unions, driven by a conspiracy theory that views them as a tool for conversions. At a rally last month, the leader of the country’s largest state warned of the danger of “love jihad,” an inflammatory slur referring to an alleged plot by Muslim men to convert Hindu women through marriage. Men who “conceal their names and play with the honor of daughters and sisters” should prepare for their final journeys, thundered Yogi Adityanath, the radical Hindu monk who leads the state of Uttar Pradesh. The “love jihad” smear is baseless, but it has become common parlance among members of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. In recent weeks, four state governments have promised to enact new laws to combat the purported threat. The new laws will deepen concerns that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s Muslim minority is increasingly subject to suspicion, discrimination and even violence.
Coronavirus: Shanghai rises to become world’s most connected city (BBC) Shanghai has dethroned London to become the world’s most connected city as the coronavirus shakes up international travel. London has seen a 67% fall in connectivity in air travel, according to airline industry body IATA. Shanghai has risen up the ranks, and the world’s four most connected cities are now all in China. IATA says the pandemic has “undone a century of progress” for connectivity between cities. “The dramatic shift demonstrates the scale at which the world’s connectivity has been re-ordered over the last months,” said Sebastian Mikosz, a spokesman for the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Large transport hubs including London, New York and Tokyo have been hit hard by the dramatic reduction in flights in and out of their cities.
Ethiopian PM says troops ordered to move on Tigray capital (AP) Ethiopia’s prime minister said Thursday the army has been ordered to move on the embattled Tigray regional capital after his 72-hour ultimatum ended for Tigray leaders to surrender, and he warned its half-million residents to stay indoors and disarm. The military offensive “has reached its final stage” after three weeks of fighting, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office said. That means tanks and other weaponry can close in on Mekele, whose residents had been warned of “no mercy” if they didn’t move away from Tigray leaders in time. Abiy’s statement asserted that thousands of Tigray militia and special forces surrendered during the 72-hour period that ended Wednesday evening. “We will take utmost care to protect civilians,” the statement said.
It’s Time for a Digital Detox (NYT) Even though the presidential election is over, we’re still doomscrolling through gloomy news about the coronavirus surge. The rest of your daily routine is probably something like mine while stuck at home in the pandemic: Divided among streaming movies on Netflix, watching home improvement videos on YouTube and playing video games. All of these activities involve staring at a screen. There has to be more to life than this. With the holiday season upon us, now is a good time to take a breather and consider a digital detox. No, that doesn’t mean quitting the internet cold turkey. Think of it as going on a diet and replacing bad habits with healthier ones to give our weary eyes some much needed downtime from tech. “There’s lots of great things to do online, but moderation is often the best rule for life, and it’s no different when it comes to screens,” said Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and the author of “iGen,” a book about younger generations growing up in the smartphone era.

Justice Fails Us Once Again: Unnao Rape Victim Set Ablaze By Accused Out On Bail Niharika Nayak Hyderabd040-395603080 December 6, 2019
Today India awoke to the news that the men accused in the Hyderabad gang-rape and murder case were killed in an encounter with the police. Many people, including the family of the victim, thanked the police for not delaying the process. However, this is one day after another young rape survivor was set ablaze by her rapist who was on bail. The 23-year-old girl was allegedly raped on December 12, 2018, in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. One of the two main accused, Shivam Trivedi was out on bail and the other, Shubham Trivedi was still under the “absconder” status when they attacked the girl. Thrashed, stabbed, and set ablaze by a gang of five, the survivor is now fighting for her life with severe 90% burns. So, how did all of this happen? Read on to find out (1).
Unnao Rape Case
Shutterstock
According to the complaint registered by the victim, Shivam took her to a Hindu temple under the pretense that he would marry her and raped her instead. The victim then sought shelter in her relative’s place in Rae Barely. Unfortunately, the accused found her location and threatened to upload a video of the rape online if she didn’t ‘surrender to them’. When she went to meet the accused, he locked her up and kept an eye on every movement she made.
According to the victim, the accused would take her to different towns and rape her on the pretext that he would marry her someday. She also stated that the accused prepared an affidavit for marriage in a civil court, but he brought the victim from Rae Bareli to her family’s residence in Unnao. Time and time again, the accused threatened the victim and said he would eliminate her family members or upload the video online. On December 12th, 2018, the victim was held at gunpoint and raped by Shivam Trivedi and his accomplice Shubham Trivedi. Despite attempting to lodge an FIR the very next day, December 13th, the police did not see it through. Finally on March 4th, 2019 an FIR was lodged against Shivam and Shubham Trivedi on the orders of Rae Bareli court. On September 19th, Shivam surrendered to the Rae Bareli court.
On November 25th, 2019, Shivam received bail from the high court and was released five days later. However, his companion, Shubham, was still reported as ‘absconding’. Ten days later, on December 5th, the victim was attacked while she was on her way to meet with her lawyer. A gang including Shivam, Shubham, both of their fathers, and a helper beat the victim viciously with sticks, stabbed her, and set her ablaze. The victim who was engulfed in flames started running towards the police station. Bystanders helped douse the flames and contacted the police who rushed the victim to the nearest hospital. The UP government later flew her in an air ambulance to Delhi for treatment at Safdarjung hospital. The woman identified her attackers in a report and police have arrested all those involved. An FIR was registered, and Shivam and Shubham were both booked under IPC sections 326, 307 and 506. The family of the accused, however, has denied all allegations and demanded a CBI investigation into the case.
The Public’s Reaction
Shutterstock
Many citizens have expressed outrage over the fact that the accused was let out on bail. This had also drawn comparisons with the Unnao minor rape case in which the accused rapists tried to kill the minor while she was on her way to testify in court (2). This incident has triggered a political firestorm with many other leaders like Priyanka Gandhi accusing UP CM Yogi Adityanath of spreading false propaganda. The CM has made tall claims about how UP’s crime rate has dropped. Many political leaders have stated that the entire state cabinet should resign. The CM has requested officials to take strict action against the accused and has promised to allot government funds to the victim’s medical expenses.
According to local residents, the victim and Shivam had known each other since childhood and had even studied together. The victim had already graduated while the accused was still in college. According to the victim’s brother, they had previously threatened to burn his sister alive if she did not withdraw the case. The mother of Shubham, in a desperate attempt to save her son, claimed that the victim has ‘framed’ the family members and made disparaging comments on the character of the victim. She even claimed that those who were arrested were apparently sleeping in their beds when the police arrested them.
Twitter Reactions

The news of the incident has sent shockwaves across the country with many expressing their horror and grief online. The hashtag #unnaohorror has been trending online. Read some of the reactions below.
While people celebrate the fact that the accused involved in the Hyderabad rape case were killed in an encounter, we cannot forget the bravery of the Unnao rape survivor. Despite being gravely injured, she managed to get help, give her statement to the police and is now fighting for her life. We hope her rapists are brought to justice as soon as possible, and we hope she recovers from her injuries.

Hello lovely people. I am Dipintika Dileep from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, in northern India. I am a fashion designer. Apart from being a fashion designer, I am also a designer, watercolorist and a painter.
I create customised portraits for people, custom-designed envelopes, custom wall paintings, wall murals and calligraphy lettering. I work according to my clients needs. I firstly create a rough sketch, show it to them, and then move further. My favourite medium of painting is watercolor.
Watercolor is so satisfying and I love to see the color blending magic. It allowed me to work for perfect tones of facial expressions. I had never used watercolors until my senior secondary, because I was very afraid of holding a brush. Don’t know why, but now I am very much comfortable only in watercolors.
I used to draw from my childhood onwards, but most of the time I wanted my parents to draw for me in my notebooks. But, being a science student there are a lot of diagrams I had to draw in my notebook during that time on my own. I did not know that I would have my future in this field.
I never thought about taking admission in fashion designing but some circumstances made me take admission in this field. Earlier in my course of fashion designing, I felt very low, but after one semester, I started enjoying it and started loving my work. In this field, we sometimes need to illustrate with mix media. When I started, I used to illustrate with mixed media but practising made me begin to use only watercolor. Practising makes a person get better over time.
Then I started exploring design and loved to do very difficult tasks. I started teaching myself calligraphy. I don’t like drawing simple dresses but love to doing heavy embroidery dresses. These things started improving me and my drawing and then I was also able to make portraits of a people. The changes and improvements in me helped me to create realistic portraits. I created a portrait of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and gifted it to him at an event.
Apart from my studies I used to take part in so many drawing competitions and win different titles. I got the title of Most Creative Women Award from Fuzia. I am also the winner of the International Artist Day organized by Faber-Castell and also the winner of Independence Day theme painting competition organized by Uttar Pradesh Tourism.
I started using watercolors in 2016. My first watercolor brand was Camlin student grade watercolors, but now I am using Faber-Castell Artist grade watercolor, Sakura Koi watercolors and Staedtler watercolor pencils.
I am not suggesting a particular type of brand or brush because in my opinion everyone needs to go through every type of watercolor and brush brands. Only then can a person thoroughly learn about mediums colors, paper, and brushes over time.
I’d like to spread one message to everyone, that an artist is a person who creates art by any type of medium. Whether it is cheap or expensive. I don’t think you are required to use expensive colors and brushes to create a masterpiece. Cheap colors are also very grateful. You can check out my work and follow me at the links below.

“Open Letter To The Current Chief Minister Of Uttar Pradesh – Yogi Adityanath Maharaj Ji by 18 years old son of the man who once staked his life for yours”
Tumblr media
Dear Maharaj ji, by way of introduction, I am Divyanshu Singh s/o Sunil Singh (Ex State President of your organization Hindu Yuva Vahini and current National President of Hindu Yuva Vahini Bharat).
It has been almost a month since my father is behind the bars for reasons which the ruling party felt would best suit to ensure that he is serving maximum imprisonment time and in any way is not coming out before 2019 elections. I will be writing to almost all the political leaders of the country and also to each and every possible front but this one is specifically for you, for the reasons which not only affects my family but affects each and every family of the State which you are currently ruling.
For the people who are reading this and are not aware that who Sunil Singh is and why I am writing to Maharaj ji, I will give you a short introduction from my end. My father, Sunil Singh is current President of Hindu Yuva Vahini Bharat, a political party incorporated to raise the issues which his ex-party Hindu Yuva Vahini (organization owned by Maharaj ji) used to raise when Maharaj ji was MP from Gorakhpur and was far away from the mainstream political arena. He has worked with Maharaj ji for more than 22 years. For him Maharaj ji was once a guru, a family member and a teacher, which was actually the case until 2017 elections but in 2017 assembly elections, when BJP did not give sufficient authority to Maharaji ji for ticket distributions, my father went against BJP and with the series of events which took place later, Maharaj ji became the Chief Minister of the state and my father was expelled from the party which he built single handedly over the years. Still everything went well until four months back when my father started his own party Hindu Yuva Vahini Bharat and within a short span of four months the party grew exponentially and added more than three lakh members and expanded in over sixteen states, this is the time when Maharaj ji’s goverment thought of my father again and immediately after a massive party march in Basti district of the State, looking at the growth of the party and the enthusiasm of the people, my father is now put behind the bars for all the possible list of fake charges under the direct guidance of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Coming back to the topic now, Maharaj ji, I totally understand that you are a saint and you really don’t care about anyone specifically but I just have couple of questions for you, knowing that I cannot meet you personally now in any way, so writing to you an open letter is probably the least I can do for my father.
I have never seen my father at home during my early childhood because he was always away with you in some or the other meeting / party activity. I rarely remember my early days except year 2008 (my birthday is on 15th of August which also happens to be the Independence Day).In the year 2008 as usual my father was away arranging some rally for you in Azamgarh district and I celebrated my birthday alone with my other family members however I was shocked to know that on 7th of September 2008 when your rally was attacked in Azamgarh, my father jumped on a live petrol bomb to save your life. At that time I was really disappointed to see my father caring for your life over his entire family but as usual we made peace with the things. Exactly ten years later, it was my 18th birthday on 15th of August 2018 when my father promised that this time he will be with me but instead your goverment put him behind the bars and as my birthday gift, your goverment gave him Rashuka charge on the night of 15th August when the entire nation was celebrating Independence. I cried a lot not because of what is happening but because I fail to understand that how can you be so emotionless behind the shadow of politics. This is for everyone one who is into politics, is this the way it is?
Maharaj ji, I may not be mature enough to understand everything but I certainly do understand that politics makes you do things you don’t want to do otherwise but is it really necessary to go to this level?
What is wrong if a person whom you taught things once is now taking over your principles and trying to do what you once started?
Why is media under so much pressure that even after covering everything multiple times no one is airing anything on electronic media or even in print media at the State level or National level?
Religion is something which you are not born with, you inherit it, I am not against any religion rather as a matter of fact I have more friends of other religions than mine but if a person is born and brought up in a place which is apparently just few kilometers away from the birthplace of Lord Ram and another few kilometers away from holy Kaashi, a person who has spent his entire adulthood in your company, a person whose religion has taught him more than anyone can think of, then what will that persons goals of life be other than his religion and its survival,  this was the reason why he formed his new party but still the motto remains the same of the ex-party Hindu Yuva Vahini. How can that be a reason for him to be imprisoned?
When you are in politics, various criminal and non- criminal charges are the perks which you get over time but I fail to understand that if my father was just protesting in front of Police station for the release of his party members, how can that add up to this level ? And if that is the case then why was the police officer suspended when BJP youth wing tore his clothes while he was trying to stop the protest on 21st of August 2018 in Lucknow? Why is your MLA’s supporters beating up police officers in the state Capital on 22nd of August 2018? Why a lady police officer was publically insulted in Gorakhpur only last year by BJP party member? My point is, if there is so many extreme things happening and still the government is silent then why a person who is just protesting in front of police station for his own party members is arrested and charged with multiple charges?
What lessons are you giving to us, the younger generation? Being in politics is not easy, you get charges again and again but that is not the end of the story, there is always a new beginning and a fresh start, with all genuine due respect, going by Wikipedia, current ruling party president, Shri Amit Shah ji have also suffered so much of this that he was arrested in murder case on 25 July 2010, all the leaders of Gujrat made distance from him, he was exiled from his own state for more than two years. But with time truth comes, he came out all clean and now is the head of the ruling party of the Country and is also indirectly your head also. Maharaj ji, please think about all this, it’s all about time but I still see the same you, whom I have seen for my entire life. My father’s teacher and a family member. Please don’t get way too distracted with political arena that you start teaching something which we don’t expect from you. And time again here, I am just eighteen now, by the time I reach your age, I might also become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh who knows that but trust me I do want to see you with us, in the same capacity as I have always seen.
It’s a genuine request, an open request instead that please stop this, if your closest aide’s family can suffer so much, anyone’s family can,  in the entire state. If in twenty first century also Gorakhpur’s administration can take such barbaric steps (the one that they took during the Independence week) then it’s the era of Babar and not yours, that’s what it means to me.
Again, from what I have understood, any government survives only when there is visible growth and the citizens are happy, Singapore has only one party ruling since 1959 on the basis of pure politics with growth as agenda and during all these years, no one had to go behind the bars for politically motivated reasons. Sons did not had to write open letters to the leaders for their families, they were heard when required. Point is, sustainable politics is the only way out and not the one which is happening in our State!
It is genuine request from me and from every son of Uttar Pradesh that please do not bring politics to such level that we lose our faith in humanity. Almost everyone in and around Gorakhpur knows that whatever is happening with my father is happening by State Government’s direct instructions but I still have faith in you and hope that you are not behind all this. Looking forward for your help, support and co-operation in doing what is right and not what is politically required for 2019 elections.
Also Please see, if I have offended you in any way, please don’t resist in ordering imprisonment for me also but just one request, please put me in the same jail where my father is.
Thank You,
Divyanshu Singh

India’s angry young men and its lynch mob crisis
By Annie Gowen, Washington Post, August 27, 2018
GOVARDHAN, India--The two young men at the leadership camp were soft-spoken yet assured, from well-off families, wearing aviator sunglasses and flip-flops.
The right-wing activists say they have beaten men they suspected of violating core Hindu beliefs and threatened interfaith couples because they fear Muslims are stealing their women. They say they’re ready to kill for their faith if necessary.
“Even if a life is lost, we don’t care,” said Ram Kumar, 23.
It’s been a summer of rage in India. Dozens have been killed by lynch mobs, and extremist Hindus continue to assault and kill others, many of them Muslims. In the latest viral video, religious pilgrims angered over a minor traffic incident used sticks to demolish a car as police looked on.
Much blame has been cast on India’s governing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with critics charging that they have encouraged violence by Hindu extremists. But India’s problem of male rage has roots beyond the strident Hindu nationalism embraced by the current government.
India has more than 600 million people under age 25, and they have greater access to technology and education than ever before. Yet millions have little hope of finding decent jobs, and a “bachelor bomb” of more than 37 million surplus men--a legacy of generations of a preference for sons and aborting female fetuses--threatens social stability for decades.
“People are frustrated that they are not being able to get jobs,” a leader from Modi’s party, Vasundhara Raje, told the channel CNN-News18. “There is angst which is spreading across communities and people. ... It’s a reaction to their circumstances.”
More than 1 million job seekers enter the labor market each month, many with poor English and inadequate job skills, but the country generated only 1.8 million additional jobs last year, according to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, a research firm. Modi says the number of new jobs last year was closer to 7 million.
Without solid prospects, many young men are gravitating to India’s growing right-wing nationalist organizations, where they find a sense of purpose.
Over time, a stereotype of a right-wing troll has emerged: keyboard jockeys with too much time on their hands, sitting in their childhood bedrooms furiously tweeting about every perceived slight to Hinduism and Modi.
This summer, Kumar attended a leadership camp sponsored by the Hindu nationalist World Hindu Council, where he learned to protect cows, which Hindus regard as sacred, protect women’s modesty and prevent outsiders from converting Hindus to other faiths. The youths did military drills in the baking heat, slept in the spartan concrete dorm rooms, and ate lentils and rice.
Kumar, a college graduate who runs a tent rental company, and Gaurav Sharma, 22, a law student, grew up in Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal, which they see not as an ethereal white monument but as a reminder of the Mughal invaders who subjugated India’s Hindus.
Kumar said that as a boy he was shy, but after joining the Hindu nationalist movement, “I have a strange sense of confidence now. The group has taught us what is right, what we need to do for society.”
Before long, he said, he was out on the streets chasing down and threatening interfaith couples, conducting the moral policing he feels is necessary because Muslim men allegedly seduce girls “as young as 14.” The Hindu activists call it “love jihad.”
Kumar said he also prowls the streets at night, searching for cattle traders who might be illegally smuggling cows for slaughter. Recently, he said, he and five others stopped a truck transporting cows and beat the Muslim driver, who pleaded for his life. The man was saved only by the arrival of the police, Kumar said.
“I was raging,” Kumar said. “If I had a pistol, I would have killed him.”
Sharma said he, too, has participated in assaults, punching one suspected cattle smuggler in the face. Elders have since shown him how to administer a beating without leaving marks on his victim.
“We have been taught to not hit the head and chest; that can be fatal,” he said. “We beat them in such a way so they get these serious, silent injuries--on the backs, on the legs--so they do not die. Otherwise, there will be a case against us.”
But since the BJP came to power in their state, Uttar Pradesh, led by the Hindu monk Yogi Adityanath, they do not fear being held accountable by the authorities.
“Earlier there was a fear that the government would arrest us, but now with the Yogi government, we don’t have any fear,” Sharma said. “Even if a smuggler is killed during a fight, we don’t have to worry about it.”
He continued, “All these BJP leaders, they’ve said, ‘Do what you want to do about cow protection. Don’t worry, if there is any problem we are there for you.’”
Modi has said that state governments should deal sternly with these “cow vigilantes” and that the government is committed to upholding the law, but other BJP politicians have sent a different message, meeting with or congratulating the alleged killers themselves.
The young men harbor a deep sense of victimization and spend a lot of time on Hindu pride-focused WhatsApp groups and alt-history websites that recount the glories of India’s ancient civilization before the Mughal and British invaders imposed, as Modi puts it, 1,200 years of servitude. Critics say social media is deepening the division between Hindus and Muslims in India that existed even before the bloody partition of India in 1947 that created a separate country for Muslims and ultimately an Islamic republic in Pakistan.
“Our parents never told us anything bad about Muslims. But in madrassas, they learn that Hindus are bad,” Sharma said. “We will tell the next generations how bad these people are.”
Sharma and his peers face stiff competition for careers because they attended schools where classes are taught in Hindi and because they know only a few phrases of English, the lingua franca of aspirational India. Many of their classmates are struggling, selling vegetables or doing menial labor. Thirty classmates joined the military.
Kumar plans on having a traditional family, if only to have babies and “contribute to the population.”
“The Hindu population,” Sharma clarified.
Others in their generation may not get the chance. Demographer Christophe Guilmoto estimates, because of the gender imbalance, that 40 million surplus men in India will remain single between 2020 and 2080.
“There is a saying, ‘Behind every successful man is a woman.’ But you don’t need women. You can leave them behind and achieve success in life,” Sharma said.
For Sharma, the love of his life married someone else. He said he still regrets that he did not ask his parents for permission to marry her. But nobody in his family had ever had a “love marriage”--always arranged unions.
Now he’s made a “final decision” to remain single and devote himself to the Hindu nationalist cause, to the dismay of his parents. Just like his idol, Modi, who, after an early marriage, has long embraced the bachelor lifestyle as a campaigner for Mother India.
