Tumblr media
Understanding Technical Analysis
Technical analysis is all about examining past market data, mainly price and volume. This is to predict future price movements. When a person knows how to analyze charts and patterns, identifying trends and making informed decisions about when to buy and sell securities becomes easier. There are many technical indicators that have their role to play in the process. These indicators provide valuable insights into the overall market behaviour.

Is King Bob-omb a robot?
Tumblr media
Is he? Huh?
Recently I have been thinking about the nature of King Bob-omb, because I think it is more interesting than one may think upon first consideration! Yes, he is a big living bomb. But what does this mean for him? Let's discuss!
Bob-ombs
Tumblr media
Bob-ombs! They are bombs. Even a dog could look at a Bob-omb and tell you "Rhat's a ralking romb! Hreeheehee!" What do we know about Bob-ombs? Well, they are very clearly artificially created entities. I mean, they're bombs. They're powered by wind-up keys! And they're mass-produced in factories. These are artificial, mechanical creatures. Automatons! The ones in Sunshine are very overtly robotic, and even if those ones are Bowser Junior creations, it may reflect how he views the real ones.
There is a history of sentient, talking Bob-ombs and Bob-omb society, so these are clearly rather advanced automatons. All the more reason for me to confidently declare them to be robots! It's weird to make a living bomb capable of thought and emotion, but as established by Origami King, the ones working for Bowser are intent on making their single blast really make a difference. So I guess making them sapient is ultimately helpful for Evil purposes, if unethical.
King Bob-omb
Tumblr media
Now let's consider the King! That guy loves to be considered. He is NOT mass-produced. He does not have a wind-up key. He does not even have a fuse! And of course, he has arms. No Bob-ombs have arms...
Tumblr media
...but Chuckyas do! Big, Bob-omb-like, with arms for throwing Marios. King Bob-omb seems like he could be a stronger, more refined model of Chuckya! Chuckyas are absolutely robotic, so this does make a good case for the King being such, as well!
Could a robot have such a magnificent mustache, though? Yes, a robot could. Even standard Bob-ombs are capable of having mustaches, as are creatures made of ice, and also this is a silly cartoon world. So yes, I think a robot could have a mustache.
Mecha King Bob-omb
Tumblr media
Now HERE's the thing that got me thinking of this in the first place! Mecha King Bob-omb, from Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. This is a robotic version of King Bob-omb... hm. This IS obviously a robotic replica based on him, and there's no reason a robot based on another robot couldn't exist, but that WOULD make the "Mecha" title pretty weird! Is the original king mechanical or what? I guess the "Mecha" could also be referring to this version being a pilotable mecha, unlike the real version, which is a Guy. This brings up questions, and answers none!
The Big Dud
Tumblr media
Finally, the last possibility of King Bob-omb's origins. If you are aware of the Super Mario 64 Iceberg, you are aware of the Big Dud theory! After Big Bob-omb (as he is known in 64) is defeated, an additional metal ball will be rolling around at the base of the mountain, and a Bob-omb Buddy will declare that the Big Bob-omb is nothing but a big dud now. This has led some to believe that the additional cannonball might be Big Bob-omb himself, made inanimate upon his defeat!
And then THIS gets me thinking about Power Stars. They do weird things to Mario creatures! I think it is likely King Bob-omb could have been created BECAUSE of the Power Star he holds. Maybe he was an ordinary Bob-omb enhanced into a new, regal form by the Star, or maybe he even was an ordinary inanimate metal ball, chosen to be extra resilient compared to his subjects! You know, in 64, he doesn't even explode like a Bob-omb. Is he a FRAUD? (No, he explodes in other games)
Final thoughts
So, after all this analysis, is King Bob-omb a robot or what? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. No one knows. This guy is weird! He can fly with no effort if thrown off the mountain. When killed, he congratulates Mario for killing him and invites him to do it again sometime. If I HAD to come to a conclusion... I would say he is technically robotic, but that's not something the designers/developers actually ever have or had in mind, and is just a result of being a Bob-omb.
I don't mind that there is no concrete answer! I was not expecting there to be! This is Super Mario we're talking about. They're not going to expect us to analyze evidence about characters and come to conclusions. But it is so much fun to do! That's why we do it! Call this guy a robot if you want! Or affirm that he is not if you don't! I don't really care as long as you are nice!

An overly elaborate comparison of Harley translations: The Second World
Tumblr media
[1st World] [3rd World]
PLEASE READ THE FIRST WORLD POST FIRST.
(This is not a criticism of these translations: I'm not considering their literary merit, only accuracy for the sake of analysis and theorising, not for reader enjoyment or immersion, which are equally important)
(Also feel free to correct me because my Japanese isn't perfect by any means)
The Second World
虚無に息吹あり
[OFFICIAL] Within the void there was breath.
[LUNA] From the void a breath of the life emerged. (?)
[YUDE] Breath was given to the void, (?)
[OHARA] Within the nothingness, there is breath.
[TCB] A breath stirred in the abyss. (?)
[OPS] There was breath upon the emptiness.
[TS] In emptiness, there is breath.
This follows the same pattern as the first line of the First World. "There is/was [X] in/on [Y]". Also sorry in advance if I get nitpicky with this one.
Luna's translation is not wrong, but once again I feel like he's making assumptions. 息吹 can definitely be interpreted as "breath of life", that might in fact be the main connotation? And this would be my interpretation too. But it doesn't say "of life", it just says "breath". The verb is also just "there is/was".
Yude also uses a rather loose interpretation. There is no "was given". Same goes for TCB's "stirred". Technically these are still fine because I guess there is an implication that the breath sort of appears in the emptiness, but it doesn't actually say that. It could have been there all along.
The other translations are all valid, IMO.
虚無 means "void" or "nothingness" or "emptiness". Apparently it can also mean the lack of meaning or value. Or the literal void of space. It's not the word used for the Void Century, though, which is why I think "nothingness" or "emptiness" would probably have been better here in order to avoid the confusion.
息吹 means "breath" but also "lifeforce" or "vitality", even in reference to inanimate things, and it probably means a bunch of other stuff too, idek. The connotations of this word seem to go deep. Apparently it could also mean a sign of something fresh and new. I'm finding way too many definitions for this.
Conclusion: There was (a) breath [upon/within] the [nothingness/emptiness].
森の神は魔を遣わせた
[OFFICIAL] The forest god tamed demons [!]
[LUNA] The god of the forest sent forth demons.
[YUDE] and the Forest God sent forth the demon.
[OHARA] The Forest God sent forth devils.
[TCB] The god of the forest summoned its devils, (?)
[OPS] The god of the forest sent forth demons.
[TS] The deity of Forest dispatched demons.
The forest god or god of the forest is formatted the same way as all the other gods in this text. Literally "God of Forest" but to keep it consistent with the sun god I would go with "forest god". I think in this case especially "god of the forest" makes it sound like it's a specific forest? Which it might be! But we don't actually know.
(Also again, it could technically be multiple forest gods, even though I don't think it is.)
魔 is an interesting word: "demon; devil; evil spirit; evil influence" or something along those lines. All of the translations decided to go with demons or devils which makes a lot of sense. Only Yude decided to go with the singular form "the demon", but even he later talks about demons in plural. It could be just one demon, technically, but I think the vibe is that it's plural. It could also be the more general "evil influence" of course.
The verb is 遣わす which means "to dispatch", "to send", "to send out", something like that. Also "to bestow" in certain situations. I have absolutely no clue where Stephen Paul got the "tamed" from, I was hoping he would explain it on the podcast but he just didn't. So... I'm baffled. Is there something I'm missing? Please someone explain if you have any idea.
Also TCB went with "summoned" which I guess is closer? But still confusing.
Conclusion: The forest god(s) sent forth (the) [devil(s)/demon(s)/evil spirit(s)/evil influence]
太陽は戦火を 広げるばかりだ
[OFFICIAL] and the sun spread the fires of war.
[LUNA] The sun does nothing but spread the flame of war.
[YUDE] The Sun spreads war everywhere. (?)
[OHARA] The sun only aggravated the fires of war.
[TCB] While the sun lit the embers of war. (?)
[OPS] The sun merely spread the embers of war.
[TS] The Sun did nothing but spread seeds of war. (?)
戦火 literally translates as "warfire" or "fire(s) of war". This time it really is the "fire" kanji. I have no idea why the text summary chose to go with "seeds". Not that it's necessarily wrong, but it does give a very different vibe.
Also while TCB isn't that far off either, I still wanted to note that it's specifically "spread" not "lit". 広げる means "to spread" or "to expand" or "to widen", that sort of thing. So it at least implies that the war was already there.
ばかり means "nothing but" or "only". So the sun only aggravated the situation, whatever it was.
Conclusion: The Sun only spread the fires of war.
半月の人は夢を見た 月の人は夢を見た
[OFFICIAL] Those of the half-moon dreamed. / Those of the moon dreamed.
[LUNA] The people of the half-moon dreamed. / The people of the moon dreamed.
[YUDE] The people of the Half-Moon dreamed. / The people of the Moon dreamed.
[OHARA] The people of the half-Moon saw a dream. / The people of the Moon saw a dream.
[TCB] Those of the half and full moons dreamed. [!]
[OPS] The people of the half-moon dreamed. / The people of the moon dreamed.
[TS] The people of the half Moon saw a dream. / The people of the Moon saw a dream.
Everybody was doing so well with this one and then TCB had to be the weird one lmao
There is no mention of a "full moon" only "half-moon" and "moon". I wouldn't be pedantic about this except that personally I think the word choice is very deliberate. Full moon is the obvious choice to pair with the half-moon, which to me says that there's a good reason why it wasn't used.
半月 is literally "half-moon". This is different from the other half-moon mentioned in the Third World section, but I'll get to it later.
夢を見た means "had a dream" or "dreamed" and yes, the word 夢 has the same metaphorical meaning as in English (a hope or a wish)
The word for people here is 人 again, and as I explained in the First World section, it can be very ambiguous. It could technically mean just one person for each line! "The half-moon person had a dream / the moon person had a dream." But I do also think that the plural interpretation is more likely.
Conclusion: The people(/person) of the half-moon dreamed. / The people(/person) of the moon dreamed.
人は太陽を殺し神となり 海の神は荒ぶった
[OFFICIAL] Man killed the sun and became god, and the sea god stormed. (?)
[LUNA] Man killed the sun and became a god, / and the god of the sea raged
[YUDE] Humans killed the Sun and became gods. / The Sea God raged.
[OHARA] People killed the sun and became Gods. / The Sea God rampaged.
[TCB] Yet the ones who slew the sun deified themselves, evoking the wrath of the sea god. (?)
[OPS] Humanity killed the sun and then ascended to divinity. / The god of the sea became enraged.
[TS] Men became gods after slaying the Sun. / The deity of the Sea rampaged.
Same thing with 人, it could be one person or multiple people, or even humanity as a whole. And the archaic use of "man" is also a valid option. Similarly 神 can be plural or singular, and it can also be definitive or indefinitive: "a god" or "the god", "gods" or "the gods". There's no distinction.
The original Japanese wording is very simple and straightforward. Some of the translations gave it a bit of flavour which is all fine, but I have notes on the official and TCB:
For 荒ぶった I think "raged" or "rampaged" are the most accurate translations here.
"Stormed" is a fun choice as a metaphorical translation, and it fits the sea god very well, there's nothing actually wrong with it, but I did wanna make a note here because I heard people using this wording as the justification why the sea god is also the rain god mentioned by the Shandians in the Skypiea arc. I just wanna point out that the original wording doesn't talk about a storm. It's entirely possible that there was a storm! And it's very possible that the sea god IS the rain god. But we don't know.
TCB is just making assumptions, which admittedly are very plausible based on the context, but they're still assumptions.
Conclusion: People(/a person/humankind) killed the sun and became god(s).* / The sea god rampaged.
(* probably just "people killed the sun and became gods" though
彼らはもう会えないのだ
^ same as in the previous post so I won't repeat it here.
To be continued!

Small thoughts on the Netflix Three Body Problem adaptation
1) We are making it international" they said. They replaced all the international collaboration, the counsel of world leaders that we see throughout the books with... two British dudes deciding everything by themselves, not accountable to anyone. They managed to make it less international than the book. But more than that, they perverted the very themes Liu Cixin wove into his books, the very ideas the books revolve on: group mentality & collaboration versus the individual, banal or exceptional. The Netflix show removed the very notion of collective, of group mentality, without which there is nothing to contrast individuality against.
2) They made Ye Wenjie an unrecognizable shell of herself. Her back is not held up straight. An old Ye Wenjie, cursing, sloushing, moving to England. Is it really Ye Wenjie? It bothers me so much that they could get away with saying this is Ye Wenjie. This is not her.
3) They "simplified" the science to a point where nothing is explained, nothing can survive through any kind of analysis of the logic of the things shown & the actions taken. Just one example, because I’ve seen the headset being praised for looking “cool”. It’s not cool if it’s at the expense of a logical plot. The futurist headsets we are shown imply that either 1° the Trisolarians are able to send sizable physical objects [which they physically can't, the limit to what they could send through space is clearly explained, it is the two protons they did send Earth] or 2° the Trisolarians shared schematics of advanced technology with the ETO, letting them to develop the headsets. But that is the one thing the Trisolarians would never do, as their entire plan rely on humans’ technology not being able to develop any further than it already has.
4) I thought it was gonna be lesser than the Tencent show. I didn't expect it to be so utterly lacking on all front. If there was one point of worthy comparison, one point where I expected Netflix to do a good job, if only to show they had a bigger budget, it was “the” boat scene. Tencent spent 25% of their budget on that scene, so I expected Netflix would try to make their boat scene more spectacular, better on a technical level, to show that the US special effects are undefeated or something. I would have never expected that they wouldn’t even try to compete. That scene happened in the episode 5 of the Netflix show & it’s underwhelming. It has no gravitas, but of course it can’t have any gravitas, it’s not the culmination of the collaboration of humans across the globe, demonstrating that they can fight back & achieve greatness when they are united, of course it can’t be the same when it’s just 10 British people working in isolation. They didn’t just do something underwhelming on a technical level, they did something underwhelming on a narrative level. Just like the scene with the insects, the culmination of the Tencent show had no weigh & no impact when done by Netflix.
5) The misguided belief that somehow an American show could show Chinese history (the cultural revolution) to an international audience better & with more accuracy than a Chinese show to a Chinese audience because of the censorship in China is laughable. An international audience would need more context to understand a historical time that they or their parents didn’t live through, but that’s not what Netflix did. What they showed was mildly violent & shocking to be sure, but not very accurate to the content of the book. They cut out a lot of plot, but they could have done that, simplified it without stripping it of context or changing the story so much it resonates wrong. I'll just give small examples:
on the stage when they condemn Ye Wenjie's father (with microphones in front of a huge audience???) they keep saying "lies", which makes no sense, that's not the logic, the charge is propagating western propaganda, upholding western values & a capitalist way of thinking, not lying (see the end of page note on that point).
they call Ye Wenjie comrade during her time at the Red Coast (in the book [& in the Tencent show] her status as a political dissident & therefore NOT a comrade is emphasized, stated explicitly. If you don't understand the social implication, let's simplify & say that being a comrade is like being a citizen, not a comrade, not part of the group, not trusted).
Netflix Ye Wenjie unironically says: "how awesome would it be if China was the first [country to make contact with aliens]". She says it, mind you, not in front of the political commissioner because she is asking for something & need to butter him up, no, she is just enthusiastically patriotic? She is shown to be enthousiastically patriotic toward China & LATER she sells out the planets to the Trisolarians.
The inconsistencies are not only baffling deviations from the source materials that display a complete lack of comprehension of Ye Wenjie as a character, as well as an astonishing disregard for the accuracy of the ideology of (Mao-area) communism & the history of Maoist China. They didn't show a lot of content, so they could have easily avoided making such basis mistakes.
What really pisses me off is that I keep seeing press pieces saying that the Netflix version “doesn’t shy away from showing”, “won't censor” the part of the story taking place during the Cultural Revolution, sometimes outright saying it as a reason to watch the Netflix version over the Tencent one, implying to the readers the Tencent version is heavily censored, when in reality the Tencent version spend a lot more time than on it than the Netflix one, showing how bad it was, in an accurate way, very close to the content of the book. The political rhetoric fallacies, the bureaucracy, the hypocrisy, how miserable everything is, is shown very well.
[Disclaimer, I'm not Chinese, it's not my culture, it’s not the country I live in. But in France there are Maoists, so I’ve learned just enough about the history of Mao & the Cultural Revolution to hold very negative views about it. In reverse, in a very racist, sinophobic way, many Westerners think Chinese people can’t think for themselves if they don’t hate every single thing about China & they lump in the country, the people & the Xi Jinping administration. It’s absurd to ask other people to hate their country, to have no pride in anything from their country. What hypocrisy, in every country, nationalism is taught to us from the time we first attend school. Patriotism is a requirement, it’s ingrained, internalized in all of us. We can be critical of our country’s history, of our government, or many things & still find pride & love for some things. I know that’s the way I feel about France.]
Censorship does exist in China, it’s exist materially in a way that differs from the Hays Code in the US in both the scope of its autority & its function. It is enacted by a governement agency called the NRTA & everything that airs on tv has to be clear by the NRTA first. A clear guideline is not provided, we know what passed it, creators know what didn’t, so to a lesser extent we know what doesn’t passes NRTA censorship: graphic violence, nudity, sex, ghosts (or BL since 2021...) et caetera. It would be dishonest to pretend that the topic of Cultural Revolution is a taboo that cannot be spoken about, as if the current administration has a positive view on it & would therefore not allow it to be criticized. What is censored (as far as we know, what is different from the book) in the Tencent show is the opening scene, a very graphic violent scene. That’s it. It’s censored, probably more for the violence than anything else. Some people find it disappointing, but the symbolic meaning of that violence in not hidden in the narrative & the event are instead visually & auditory implied in a short flashback at the end of one episode.
NB) In the opening scene of the Netflix show (the same one that was cut on Tencent), the political tribunal has someone accusing: "Lies, all lies!". But lying is not a political charge. It sounds ridiculous. They just had to follow the book, they didn’t have to understand communism, but no, they had to come up with things themselves... My best guess it that the creators didn’t realized that "lying is bad" is a cultural value that is not universal.
I don't know if "lying" is a big deal in China, but I know it's not a big deal in my culture & in a Marxist/communist political context, lying is just not "a thing". They are a lot of charges you can get in a political tribunal:
-individualist behavior,
-liberalism/imperialistic thinking,
- lack of self-criticism (Maoism famously has the three principles, one of which being the practice of self-criticism so you/we can do better).
-deceiving the masses with xx propaganda [so they don't revolt when they would if they knew the truth], that’s as close to lying is a political charge can get,
-aspiring to bourgeois comfort [that can mean profiting of other people's labor, not doing enough or not wanting to sacrifice your life for the cause],
- treason & of course
- being counterrevolutionary / working against the revolution, are the two big ones !
Can you see what is not on that list ? Lying is not on that list.
