Tuesday 10th March 2020 Reflective Journal
Had a lecture in Vision and Authorship about different types of book binding. We then learnt how to bind our own books by following instructions and working together to figure out the process. This was a bit difficult at first and very time consuming however the results were interesting and left me feeling very proud, motivated and inspired. I would definitely need a lot more practice if I were to do this for a final book outcome however it was a good first attempt. Unfortunately this piece is not something that will go towards my Final Major Project.

Advanced Research Method 2
02/10/2019
Week 2: Philosophy as Method: Ethics, Aesthetics, Ontology of Photography
Blog task: Discuss what you learned in class today: how can philosophy assist in analyzing photographs?
During Teemu’s interactive lecture we learned what Philosophy is and what its methods are:
Philosophy is arguments, deeper thinking, questioning life, uncertainty…
Philosophy is always been concerned with questions about right&wrong, is an activity, a way of thinking with logical arguments, a way of analysing and clarifying concepts.
The philosophical method is characterized by :
Logical argumentation
Rigor and thoroughness (In understanding philosophy must be rigorous argument and must be followed them step by step)
Questioning the most fundamental concepts and beliefs
Open-minded and opened to change
Clarity ( hopefully!)
After discussing what it is, we talked about how to apply it to photography withing 3 categories: ONTOLOGY, ETHICS, AESTHETICS.
1 - ONTOLOGY: IS THE STARTING POINT for when we look at an image. It’s related to Roland Barthes's opening pages of Camera Lucida, where he states what motivated his investigation of photography. He writes, “I was overcome by an ‘ontological’ desire: I wanted to learn at all costs what Photography was 'in itself,’ (Camera Lucida 1981 p.3).
Ontology is, therefore, is a way of asking the question What Is Photography, What is unique about it? What makes it different from other forms of media?
The characteristics of ontology in photography are :
Indexicality ( cause - connection)
Truth - Objectivity -
Definition and Sharpness (Groups f64 ideal of straight photography which the group espoused in response to the pictorialist methods) -
Reproducibility (photos can be reproduced as many times as possible.
2 - ETHICS: The relation between photography and ethics is an approach to which humans are responsive as we all subconsciously know what we think is ethically right or wrong and what we think it’s beautiful.
But when, for example, every day we are told through photographs about events such as war, poverty, pollution, etc, the ethical questions concerning these photos are: Who benefits from the photographs? Who should benefit from them? Who should photograph these events?
Looking as “Sebastiao Salgado, Starved Child Looking For Food in the Region of the Former Lake Faguibine. Mali, 1985.”
(Could not upload image as it goes against Tumblr rules of nudity )
It is an image of a black child very skinny as he’s suffering from famine and he has been photographed next to a tree that looks dead. To me, his intention was to represent the fact that a child should look like a child and not like a dead tree, although the idea was interpreted in a different way...
WHAT ETHICAL ISSUE WE ARE ENCOUNTERING? The answer for some people is that Salgado’s images are too Aesthetic, too beautiful if we think about what is really happening in the image. WHAT IS THE ETHICAL ACCUSATION HERE? Don’t photograph tragedy/ don’t photograph at all.
CONSEQUENTIALISM: The moral value of an act is based on the act’s consequences (INTENTION - RESULT ) (Does the end justify the means?)
DEONTOLOGY: You have to do what is right in ANY specific situation regardless of the consequences / in the first place BECAUSE is the right thing to do.
An example of this can be encountered in the article written by Ingrid Sischy in which she says: “Salgado is too busy with the compositional aspects of his pictures - and with finding the "grace” and “beauty” in the twisted forms of his anguished subjects. And this beautification of tragedy results in pictures that ultimately reinforce our passivity toward the experience they reveal. To aestheticize tragedy is the fastest way to anesthetize the feelings of those who are witnessing it. Beauty is a call to admiration, not to action.” (Ingrid Sischy, (1991) “Good Intentions”, The New Yorker,)
https://paulturounetblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/good-intentions-by-ingrid-sischy.pdf ( Full Article - "Good Intentions“ )
3 - AESTETICHS: It concerns the “beauty” and whether a photograph is aesthetically valuable. It makes us ask ourselves the question: Is photography art at all? Is it different than painting? Is it transparent? Does it give you access to the object it depicts?
Does the value of an image come from the beauty of the subject we are photographing or from the aesthetics capability of the photograph to “highlight” the issue? In my opinion, there is no way to control how the viewer is interpreting an image

Advanced Research | 07 March 2017 | READING SEMINAR 02 | Stewart, S. (2007) 'Objects of Desire' in On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection, London: Duke
Stewart writes about souvenirs as memories/traces of lived experiences. How would you capture memories or lived experience in your own creative work?  What kind of methods/approaches could you use?
In my creative practice, I wrote down some interesting sentences that I heard, noticed, read from the day one of my postgraduate course. These are traces of lived experiences. This collection of sentences has taken from many areas such as live talks, lectures, written material, advertisements and design briefs. It can be extended further with the help of stronger listening skills and as much as live experiences will be faced. This collection is available in the very rough format in my daily notebook. It can be used and developed into the design only after gathering them together.
Identify some collections of objects or archives that you could use or already have used as part of your creative research.  Who put these collections together and when?  Why?  Have these collections been added to since they were first conceived?  What are the organizing principles in the collection/archive?  How does this affect your use of the material for your own creative research?
I have already have used archives of Royal Airforce Museum, London, as part of your creative research. The teamwork created an identity for exhibition ‘Wings of Love’ held in the museum. Archives were included postcards (handpainted and written), Love stories of pilots and their wives/girlfriends in the form of letters, Old photographs of soldiers and much more. Unfortunately, original collection was not available. However, the copies provided to the team seems to have an impact of hand lettering and old printing techniques such as letterpress and calligraphy. This affects my use of the material for creative research.

Presentation group
11.11.20
First meeting with my presentation group of history today. I did not come to the group with firm ideas as I felt it was important to see how the rest of the group were feeling. I was very impressed with the way the group were thinking and am looking forward to learning in different ways. I have good expectations about working with the group and am looking forward to working together.

Advanced Research Methods
Week 10 Seminar Presentation
Blog Task;
During the 10th week of our Advanced Research methods, as a group we presented a presentation which touched upon History as a method and how we could apply this to analysing art (photography). With this in mind we as a group had decided to base our presentation on the Civil Rights Movement which would then be followed by two images captured by Robert Frank that came from his photographic book ‘The Americans’. We first opened our presentation with deep research into the meanings behind the Civil Rights Movement and how the consequences lead to many protests which would begin to fight for the individuals needs. Following that we then compared the movement to recent scenarios, one in which has been in the news numerous times and has gained attention of millions is Donald Trump’s outrageous racist way of thinking. To finish of the presentation we then touched upon the Black lives matter, an international activist movement which campaigns against violence and race.
Although the presentation went well i believe there was detailed research but not enough photographic images to create comparisons between and link back to how the Civil Rights Movement had an effect on what we were seeing within the frame. Another improvement that we could make was our use of referencing on the quotes stated by Donald Trump, “Laziness is a trait in Black people”. The lack of referencing lead to questions arising from members in our class.
As a whole the presentation benefited us in many ways. One being i now am able to analyse an image into deeper analysis than i already would have done which has brought me to question every aspect of history and if it had an effect on the making of the image.
Although i will not as a whole be touching upon the method of History throughout my essays i will indeed be talking about personal history of individuals, how it has shaped them as a human what effects have come from their past. This idea will also follow into my current project i am working on for the ‘Beyond The Frame’ module, where i have captured various intimate images of a female subject which is dealing with a mental illness which had also been a illness in her mothers life. For me a powerful image is not about how beautiful or technical the image is but indeed what is told by what we see and how factors in that one individuals life has made then act to today's world.

Greenwich Trip
I found the field trip to Greenwich quite useful in terms of learning how to work in different darkroom settings. I developed my roll of black and white film there and took part in the pin hole camera workshop (which didn’t turn out at all...sorry no pics). It was interesting exploring that area of London. It didn’t feel like I was in the city at all. I think it’s important to be able to adapt and learn in new working environments rather than the Uni facilities.

Thomas Lohr, Bavaria-born fashion photographer has made such a rapid impact on the fashion world in the brief space of four years. His clean and modern style, his penchant for minimalist and emotionally withdrawn depictions that inexplicably draw one close.

Monday 9th March 2020 Reflective Journal
Got together with my group in order to work on completing the workshop ready to be presented on Friday in Vision and Authorship. We worked together by completing and finalising the presentation that will be shown, created one of the physical work sheets that participants will need and did multiple test prints before printing the final outcomes on paper that is more interesting and interactive. As well as this I attended a talk from a MA Graphic Design graduate which was a very inspiring insight. A productive day all in all which has left me feeling inspired and motivated.

Advanced Research Methods Task 1
In the first lesson of the Advanced Research Methods module we covered selecting a visual project, researching the appropriate topics, and the different kinds of methodology that you would apply to a visual project, and which is appropriate. Methodology is a means of deciding how to analyse a visual project, which is vital in trying to understand a project, as every work is different and would need the appropriate method of analysis applied. For example The Soviet Photobook 1920 - 1941 (2015) by Mikhail Karasik (pictured above) would require a deep historical context, as to understand the photobook you must first understand the politics, the tension, and the military strategy of the time, however a contemporary photobook wouldn’t require a historical understanding in the same way.
As well as the historical context to the photobook there’s also various theories in order to better analyse the visual project. For this particular work we would look at documentary theory, discussing whether the photographs are bias from a propaganda perspective, and how well can we trust there accuracy to the actual events. There’s a lot of accompanying text in this book as well so we would look at the juxtaposition of the image and text, looking at the relationship between the two throughout. It would also be interesting to analyse the photobook from a purely aesthetics perspective, as in art theory, as there would be examples of landscape theory, themes of modernism, as well as an element of surrealism.
It is important to identify what methods are required in an analysis of a visual project, as we can then gain a deeper understanding of the inspiration and construction of project. The Soviet Photobook for example has no need for gender theory or fashion theory, however those would apply wonderfully to the exhibition catalogue of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2015) at the V&A museum, as those are critical themes in McQueen’s work.
