Fixer Upper PART ONE (Frankie Morales x f!Reader)
Summary: Nothing seems to go right in your new house. When yet another thing breaks, a certain handyman comes to your rescue.

A/N: this one goes out to my anons who’ve been sending me stuff about frankie as a repairman! I loved the idea and I thought it would be super fun to write! This will be part ONE of three-ish! ps idk if any references to reader’s gender are in this part but there certainly will be some in the future so.

It’s been a while that you’ve lived in this house. Since that day you hauled in the cardboard boxes, you’ve been feeling that your life is the epitome of Murphy’s law. Or rather, this damned house is.
Nothing ever goes right. The heat breaks in the winter and the air conditioning breaks in the summer. The plumbing needs work when you need it to work, and the oven only ever breaks halfway through cooking something. Seriously, you swear this place is cursed by some hex determined to pester you out of living here.
You’ve never exactly been the handy type. You don’t know much about mechanics, heating or cooling, the electricity and wiring in your house, any of it. By now, you wish you’d taken the time to learn it at some point rather than hiring someone every time.
The first sign was that the June heat seemed inescapable. You’d been outside all day, and you figured it was just your body taking its time to adjust to the cooler, indoor temperature. Then you never cooled down. When you stepped out of the bathroom after a shower and found the air to be nearly as muggy as that of the steamed bathroom, you realized that the air conditioning must be off.
Well, it was on. The problem was that it wasn’t working. You opened all the windows, and figured the night breeze would cool you, then you became worried about serial killers and crimes and promptly shut and locked all of them again. With the fan in your bedroom on, the air at least moved, but was still thick and heavy.
In the morning, when you wake with no blankets on and sweaty sheets, you dial the repair company as fast as you can. You inform them of the situation, and they tell you they’ll send someone out your way in the next hour or two.
The air is still somewhat cool outside, so you give the front porch a shot once you get changed out of your pajamas and take yet another cool shower. The heavy dew is an indicator of just how humid the air is, and you relish every little breeze that passes by and cools you down. You conduct your morning business outside, hoping to have this problem fixed before the sun reaches a height where the temperatures will rise exponentially.
About an hour after the call, the repair van rolls up into your driveway and parks. “Thank God,” you murmur to yourself.
Your focus returns to your computer, but you hear the door slam shut and look up to find the repairman there. He wears khaki cargo pants and a gray t-shirt, complete with a ball cap on top, with dark brown curls peeking out from the bottom. He fastens his tool belt around his waist as he walks up to the porch. “Hey there. I’m Frankie. I’ll be taking care of you today,” he informs you, a kind smile on his face. You already like him. “I got the basics from the boss, but can you tell me more about the problem?”
Looking up at him from the seated position you’re in, you give an awkward smile. Suddenly, you wish you’re better dressed, fixed up and looking nice. Even in work clothes, this man is beautiful. It makes you a little nervous, you in your pajamas and him looking like a god even in cargo pants. “I wish I could, but I don’t know anything about the air conditioner and how it works other than how to change the settings. All I know is that it isn’t working.”
He gives a good-natured chuckle, a soft bounce of his chest beneath the shirt. He looks down at his tool belt and his scruff brushes against the collar of the gray. “Well, let’s go give it a shot. I’ll need you to show me around, show me the control panel and the main system.” God, he’s handsome.
“Oh, of course,” you nod and stand, leaving your laptop on the small table. “Well, right this way. And please, you don’t need to take your boots off. Those look complicated,” you laugh as you look at the heavy tan boots at the bottom of his body.
Frankie nods and looks around as you lead him through the house. He doesn’t take his boots off, since you insisted, but he does give them a generous wipe on the doormat, careful not to track anything in. “It’s a beautiful place,” he tells you honestly, with a half-smile that just tugs at one of the corners of his ridiculously soft-looking lips.
“Thanks,” you shrug and show him to the control panel. “I try. Okay, here’s the button thingy.”
“The button thingy?” he teases, which leads to laughter from the both of you.
“If I knew what it was called, you wouldn’t be here,” you tease him back and shake your head.
Frankie uses the tools from his belt to take off the casing. You lean against the wall as he works, admiring the way his hands nimbly check the wires and paneling behind it. He holds a small flashlight between his teeth to look into the wall cavity.
“I can hold that for you,” you offer, and he moves his mouth for you to take it from him.
“Thanks,” he says, popping his jaw slightly to adjust from the awkward angle of holding it between his teeth. “You don’t have to. I’m just here to fix it.”
You point it at the same spot. “I might as well be some help, considering I don’t know shit about my own house.”
Frankie laughs at that, stealing a glance your way that makes your face warm before his gaze returns to the electrical situation. “Well,” he declares after a few seconds. “The wiring must not be the problem here. This all is working fine, so it must be with the actual system.”
“Great,” you groan. “The part I know even less about.”
“That’s what I’m here for,” he chuckles and screws the panel back into place on your wall, making sure everything works properly and he didn’t mess with any functions.
Leading Frankie to your basement, you show him the cluttered laundry room and the central air conditioning unit. He’s already analyzing the system, and you back off to let him work. He looks focused. “Holler if you need me,” you tell him as he gets on his knees to look at something, daring to gently pat his shoulder. It’s strong, muscular beneath your palm.
Heading back to the kitchen, you open the fridge and sigh. For a moment, you allow yourself to close your eyes and just enjoy the cold air it produces. Hopefully, your house will be the same soon enough. Grabbing two tall glasses, you fill each with ice before pouring half sweet tea and half lemonade into the glasses.
You stand in the kitchen with the freezer open, sighing at the cool air it provides. Not sure how long he’ll take, you scroll through your phone. It’s surprisingly quick, you find.
“Hey, I found it!” Frankie calls from the basement.
Carrying the two glasses, you return to the laundry room to find him reorganizing his tool belt. “Here,” you tell him with a smile as you hold out the drink. “Least I could do. It’s unbearable in here.”
“Thanks,” he smiles and lifts the glass to you in a miniature salute before taking a sip. Frankie then launches into a detailed explanation of the issue with the A/C unit, using all kinds of terms you don’t understand and mentioning parts you didn’t even know were included in the machine. “I got it all fixed up, though, and it shouldn’t take long before it’s working just as good as normal.”
You sigh in relief, swallowing the sweet drink and smiling at him. “God, thank you so much. You don’t even know how awful it was in here.”
“If it’s anything like right now, I do,” he chuckles. The man takes the hem of his t-shirt and lifts it to wipe his face, revealing a muscular but soft body beneath it, with a beautiful little trail of dark hair leading to beneath his belt. Is it terrible that your first thought is that you want to lick it?
You force the image from your mind with another swig of the drink. “Yeah, just about. Well, how much do I owe you?” You ask the man, leading him out of the laundry room and into the basement that’s already feeling cooler.
“Oh, nothing right now,” he shakes his head as you lead him upstairs and to the kitchen. “I just tweaked some things for you, didn’t need any parts or anything, so it’s just gonna be labor.” He seems to remember something. “Ah, shit. I gotta have you sign something. I’ll grab the paper from the van and be right back,” he tells you and leaves his drink on the counter, half-jogging outside.
While he’s outside, you lean against the cool kitchen counter and let yourself daydream. This Frankie guy certainly is attractive, and his personality is definitely something you’re interested in. What if the situation right now played out like a porno, and he fucked you on the countertop? You certainly wouldn’t complain. You noticed his hands and feet are large. Certainly he must be big somewhere else too. “Oh Jesus Christ,” you murmur to yourself. Why did my mind have to go there? And why is the thought so hot? He’s a sweet man too, clearly goofy and sweet. Why is your mind going there then? Really, upon further pondering, you just want to hug the man, admire his strong body pressed to yours in an intimate but innocent gesture.
“Sorry, what was that?” Frankie calls out as he walks into the house again.
His voice snaps you from your daydreaming. “Oh, just talking to myself,” you say quickly and cheerfully, taking the paper from him. The top is printed with repairman name: Francisco Morales. Francisco. That makes you smile. What a cute name. The rest is filled with the details of what he did to the machine to fix it, and you sign and date at the bottom. “Here you go, Francisco.”
His tanned skin turns a little pinker on the cheeks. “Great,” Frankie smiles and takes it back.
“Before you leave,” you tell him quickly, darting to grab your purse from the entryway, “here.”
Frankie walks to you and you hand him a generous cash tip, with a stupid smile stuck to your face. “Thank you, wow,” he says, voice honest in its surprise as he notices the total of the money.
“Of course. I really can’t thank you enough. God, it’s been painfully hot in here and I really just can’t stand the heat,” you ramble, your voice speeding up. “And… yeah. Thank you. For your company, too.”
“Just doing my job,” he tells you with a smile, putting his hands in his pockets. “Oh, here.”
From his pocket, he pulls a little rectangle of paper with his name and company on it. “The shop number is on here; if anything changes, just call and ask for Catfish.”
“Catfish?” You ask with a smile, puzzled.
“My old military nickname. It’s what the guys around there call me,” he shrugs, shy at the nickname.
It makes you laugh a little, and you tuck the card in your purse. “Well, Catfish, thank you. I’ll be sure to use this next time I have some stupid thing I can’t repair myself.”
“Please do,” he chuckles, a shy smile on his face. “I’ll see you around.”
“Thanks!” You call again and cringe. That’s, what, the ninth time you’ve said that now? He walks to the van and you give him a wave before retreating back inside. God, now you can’t wait for this shitty house to need another repair. You’ll certainly be asking for Catfish.

"Today's the day!" Wrecker exclaimed excitedly, opening the door so quickly that it hit the wall before bouncing back to hit his arm. 
Unbothered, he pushed the door back to approach your frightened form on the bed to hit your shoulder playfully. 
"Ready to return to the ship, pilot?" He laughed like this was the funniest joke of the universe. Well. In a sense it was. 
"I'm discharged?" You asked, hopeful to finally get out of the medbay. Patch and Mylana have been very kind from day one and you were eternally grateful for their support through your healing process. But you were ready to get away from the white walls, bacta smells and occasional nocturnal pain screams down the hallway.
"You are!" He confirmed, placing a pile of neatly folded clothes with your clean boots on the bed beside your folded legs. "Crosshair got you some clothes." 
Your eyebrows shot to your hairline, well, what remained of it. To reduce the swelling of your brain they had to shave some of your hair to access the skull so Mylana offered to do a sidecut to save the remaining of your hair and make you a bit more fashionable. You were glad that you accepted, the style definitely suited you and the appreciative look you received from a certain sergeant made you forget what the word 'insecurity' meant. Added to your apparent scar, you looked badass. 
"Is there another Crosshair on base? 'Cause I don't think we're talking about the same Cross." You maintained his gaze, bewildered. 
Sure, the sniper had warmed up a bit to you. He came to visit, rarely, but still came nonetheless. He didn't talk much but his company was enough. He usually brought you holobooks about ships, from their mechanics to how to fly them. 
He'd sometimes talk about some of his flying experience or recall some pranks he and Wrecker pulled on the regs if you sighed from boredom enough times. Oh and he brought you a tiny cup of caf one time. Tiny victories. 
But to get you clothes? That you noticed were the right size? You must have done a lot more progress than you thought. 
"Yeah. Said the gown would smell bacta." He bent over to sniff near your shoulder. "And he's not wrong." 
You rolled your eyes, pushing his shoulder away.
"Fine. Wait outside, I'll change." 
With a salute, he exited the room and closed the door slowly this time. 
You grabbed the clothes, quickly pulled the socks on, followed by the black cargo pants. You admired in awe the lots and lots of pockets and immediately thought how many things you could put in them. Your own cargo pants didn't even have that many pockets. You swiftly removed the gown, folded it in a ball before throwing it in the basket in the corner of the room, cheering silently when you aimed right at your first attempt. Your arm really got better in the last 2 weeks the cast has been off. 
You traced the scars on your inner arm and abdomen, your proofs that you survived hell and came back stronger. With a smile, you pulled on the grey long sleeve shirt Crosshair chose for you. You pulled up the sleeves a bit until they reached just below your elbow and stepped in your boots to hurriedly get out. 
"Looking good Y/N!" Wrecker whistled looking you up and down, catching the attention of the nurses office. 
"I have to agree with that." Came Mylana's voice, admiration in her eyes as she nodded with a grin.
"It's all thanks to you." You winked at her, passing a hand through your shaved side, carefully avoiding your sensitive scar. 
"I dare to think that I did a good job with those stitches. I should have some credits." Patch appeared from around the corner, datapad in hands. 
"You did and I can't thank you enough!" You laughed, hugging him when he opened his arms. 
"You're welcome. Take care of yourself. No jumping off cliffs again." He chided, letting you go with a pat on your shoulder to join the nurse station. 
"I will! And I fell! Big difference!" You countered, earning a scoff with a shake of his head. 
"Well, this is goodbye until next time then! Although it would be nice if you weren't injured." Mylana hugged you, her hand softly patting your back. 
"I'll be careful mom." You snarked, chuckling. "See ya Lana! Take care!" You jogged to join Wrecker who took a head start. 
He walked you through the medbay, walked a long hallway and finally showed you the hangar where you spotted a familiar ship stationed at the far end. You took a deep breath in, letting out a moan at the smell of fresh air, oil and smoke. 
"I missed this." You informed Wrecker, arms open wide at your side to feel the breeze stroking your exposed skin. 
"I know what you mean." He resumed walking, glancing at you as you followed. "I was in the medbay for a month for that." He reminded you, pointing at his scar on the side of his face. 
"I was in there for three." You deadpanned, looking around to take in the clones moving crates around and the mechanics repairing ships. 
Before you knew it, you reached the ship where Hunter was waiting down the ramp. 
"Looking good." He approved, the smirk deforming his tattoo, the sight of which sent tingles to your fingertips. 
You remembered all too well the day Hunter fulfilled the one condition you asked for. 
"That's what I said!" Wrecker said, passing you to enter the ship. 
"Welcome aboard the Havoc Marauder." Hunter became more serious, his hand presenting you the interior of the vessel. 
You followed his lead, taking in all the information he gave you about the ship while creating a mental map of the structure and rooms. 
You weren't surprised when he showed you your cot, a small bed pushed against the far wall of a room where two sets of bunks were occupying the side walls. You quickly figured that a ship had very limited spacing and that you would sleep near them all. You weren't a fan of sleeping in your underwear anyway, the lack of clothing making you feel vulnerable. 
"Here." Hunter caught back your attention, a well-known knife and tap in his open hands. 
You took them back, eager to be your whole self again. Pocketing the tap, you traced the old tree carved in the wood of the knife handle, finding a deep comfort in the movement. 
"What does it represent?" He asked, genuinely curious. "The tree." 
"It's my family's crest. We've always been close to the jungle." You smiled, remembering the day your dad offered you the knife. "This knife has been passed down for many generations now-" 
You frowned at the light bleating sound echoing through the ship. This was unusual. 
"What was that?" You asked and when you turned around, Tech and Crosshair were in the doorway. You slipped the knife onto the nearby bed. 
"That? Nothing." Tech replied too nonchalantly.

"Think you're ready?" Hunter asked from his spot leaning on the opposed bunk. 
You smirked. "Doubting me Sergeant?" You asked, mischief sparkling in your eyes. 
"No. Simply confirming with you." He cleared, raising an eyebrow at your expression. 
"Then I confirm. I'm ready for a test run. I know all those manuals by heart and it's as boring as it sounds." You chuckled. 
He pushed himself up before taking a few steps in your direction, only stopping when a single inch separated your chests. 
"I bet that those manuals would be much more interesting if you'd read them out loud." He said lowly, eyes darting down to your lips before returning to your eyes, calculating. 
"Now, I really doubt that." You rolled your eyes at his silliness. "I'm sure you'd fall asleep without a problem though." 
"I'd have nice dreams then." He smirked and you couldn't stop yourself. 
Your hand rose to the ink at the corner of his mouth, tracing its length carefully like you did that day he completed his part of the deal. Rising up to his cheekbone and temple, his head moved to the side to feel more of your fingers ghosting his skin before they finally entangled themselves in his locks.

The Diocese of New York, created in 1808, was made an archdiocese by Pope Pius IX on July 19, 1850. In 1853, Archbishop John Joseph Hughes announced his intention to erect a new cathedral to replace the Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Lower Manhattan. The new cathedral was designed by James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style. On August 15, 1858, the cornerstone was laid, just south of the diocese's orphanage. At that time, present-day midtown Manhattan was far north of the populous areas of New York City. 
Work began in 1858 but was halted during the Civil War and resumed in 1865. The cathedral was completed in 1878 and dedicated on May 25, 1879, its huge proportions dominating the midtown of that time. The archbishop's house and rectory were added in 1880, both by James Renwick Jr., and an adjacent school (no longer in existence) opened in 1882. The spires were added in 1888, and at 329 feet and 6 inches (100.4 meters) were the tallest structures in New York City and the second highest in the United States. An addition on the east, including a Lady chapel, designed by Charles T. Mathews, was constructed from 1901 to 1906. The Lady Chapel's stained-glass windows were made between 1912 and 1930 by English stained glass artist and designer Paul Vincent Woodroffe. In 1927 and 1931, the cathedral was renovated, which included enlarging the sanctuary and installing the great organ.
An extensive restoration of the cathedral was begun in 2012 and lasted 3 years at a cost of $177 million. Overseen by MBB Architects  (Murphy Burnham & Buttrick) and Construction Manager Structure Tone, the award-winning restoration reversed decades of decay and soot.The restoration was completed by September 17, 2015, before Pope Francis visited the cathedral on September 24 and 25, 2015. The restoration cleaned the exterior marble, repaired stained-glass windows, and painted the ceiling, repaired the flooring and steps, among many restorations. The cathedral and the renovations were featured on WNET's television program Treasures of New York. 
In 2017, MBB Architects and Structure Tone, along with Landmark Facilities Group and P.W. Grosser, completed the design and installation of a new geothermal system believed to be the largest in New York City. The geothermal system replaced the steam radiators and 1960s-era air conditioning in the cathedral.

What to look for at an open house -- inside and out

When the stay-at-home order has lifted, prospective home buyers will flock to open houses. A majority of people (65 percent) who attended an open house within the last year would do so now without hesitation, according to survey data the National Association of Realtors released on Monday.
An open house is the real estate equivalent of a first date. You want to look for validations of your initial attraction, but you also want to notice any potential deal-killers as soon as possible so you can focus your efforts on finding your dream home. Here are tips from me, a former home inspector, and other industry experts:
Before you go
■ “Google the address specifically,’’ said Dave Twombly, an exclusive buyer agent with 4 Buyers Real Estate in Cambridge. “Look at the property and neighborhood on Google maps. Read the town’s Facebook page. There’s a lot you can find out before you get to the open house.’’
■ In addition to Google, check your county’s Registry of Deeds website for information about the house, including what the owners paid for it and when. (Morrison)

This indicates that the house has been treated for termites. If you see them, you’ll want to ask the owner for more information.
In the basement
■ “Greater Boston buyers should be concerned about rodents,’’ Murphy said. “They’ve gotten increasingly worse with our mild winters over the last few years. It’s now rare that I go into a house that I don’t find some evidence of rodents in there.’’
■ Bring a flashlight and look around. Are there price tags on any pipes or electrical components. This is a sign the work was done by a nonprofessional. (Morrison)
■ Does it smell musty? That’s a sure sign of a damp basement. Similarly, if it is heavily scented with multiple air fresheners, it might be an attempt to cover up odors. (Trombly)
■ If the basement is finished, there will be a lot you can’t see, but buyers should ask the listing agent about the source of any water stains and obvious signs of repairs. (Atwell)
■ Look for cracks in the foundation. Most foundations have cracks, but a structural engineer should evaluate any cracks ¼ inch wide or wider. (Atwell)
■ Ask about the age of the heating system. Anything over 30 is on borrowed time. (Morrison)
■ If the house has central air conditioning, you should ask the agent how old it is. The average lifespan of the outdoor condenser unit is typically 15-20 years; indoor air handlers typically last about 30 years. (Morrison)
In the interior
■ “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and if you don’t get satisfactory answers, follow up,’’ Twombly said. “You should spend more than 20 minutes in a house before committing to buy it for $800,000. Spend as much time as it takes to feel comfortable you’ve been thorough.’’
■ Will this house work for you as the people in your household age/grow? (Trombly)
■ Are the floors sloping? (Atwell)
■ Are the windows old or newer? (Trombly)
■ Open the door and look into the closets, not to be nosy, but to ensure they’ll be big enough for your wardrobe. (Trombly)

Take notes about what you see. They’ll help you make an informed offer and if your offer is successful, share those notes with your home inspector. Nearly every house problem can be fixed, but knowing about them upfront will help you craft a better offer.

Giving Notre Dame back her unique voice
For centuries, the inside of Notre Dame cathedral saw little sunlight. But this past July when Brian Katz stepped inside the French cathedral, its famed arched ceiling was open to the full sun. It had been nearly three months since an April 15 blaze tore through the Paris church. The scent of that fire lingered. And the floor still lay heaped with charred wood. But to Katz and his colleague Mylène Pardoen, the most glaring concern was another sensory loss — the cathedral’s “voice.”

The grandest cathedrals are known for an echolike quality known as reverberance (Re-VUR-bur-unce). Before the fire, the tap of a heel inside Notre Dame or a cough could ring loudly throughout the space. It’s something that tended to make visitors step softly, keep their voices low and move slowly. Notre Dame de Paris — which translates to Our Lady of Paris — had a way of imposing silence upon her guests.
Construction on this famous French cathedral started in 1163. This church is known for its grand architecture and gargoyles (the imaginary stone creatures that perch on its roof). You might know this church from the book or movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That’s a fictional story about a bell-ringer in the cathedral.
Now, as people plan the cathedral’s rebuilding, Katz is on a mission. He wants to help bring back the church’s sonic majesty. And he is about as well trained to attempt this as anyone. He’s an acoustics researcher for the French research agency CNRS. He works in Paris at nearby Sorbonne University. Using sound measurements and a computer model, Katz and his colleagues have already reproduced the intact cathedral’s reverberance. It’s part of a field of science known as heritage acoustics.
Explainer: What is Acoustics?
Katz can use a computer to apply those acoustics to music recorded in some other space. He can make the music sound as if it were being played in the intact Notre Dame. By adjusting that simulation, he also can reveal how choices made during the church’s rebuilding might affect Notre Dame’s sound. Or he can resurrect the Notre Dame of old — documenting how past renovations to its structure may have changed the cathedral’s sound.
While it’s common to have pictures that document the interior of a historic building, recording what a structure first (or last) sounded like is less common. Now, following the Notre Dame disaster, heritage acoustics is entering the spotlight. Here and elsewhere, Katz and others are wielding their knowledge of acoustics and other fields of physics to unveil a hidden aural history of churches, theaters and other notable structures.
Sonic history
Damian Murphy works as an acoustician (Ah-kooh-STIH-shin) — sound scientist — in England at the University of York. He has performed acoustic studies at sites ranging from a chocolate factory to a former nuclear reactor hall. “The past was not a silent place,” he notes. “Sound is a fundamental part of our human experience,” and one that seldom gets captured in history books.

Only ruins remain of St. Mary’s Abbey in York, England. But Damian Murphy and colleagues built a computer simulation to restore the acoustic grandeur of the 16th century church. A recording made in an echo-free room begins the piece. The acoustics of another cathedral, York Minster in England, are applied after 8 seconds. The music then becomes more reverberant. At around 22 seconds, the acoustics is changed to match that reconstructed for the ruined abbey.
But for a cathedral, especially, “the sound and the feeling you get when you are inside … is key for the [building’s] character,” says Lidia Álvarez-Morales. An acoustical engineer, she too works at the University of York.
The acoustics in a cathedral are all about how sound bounces off its surfaces. Clap your hands, for instance. This triggers vibrations of air molecules. They travel in a wave, causing variations in pressure. Some of those waves travel directly to your ear. You hear that sound right away. Other waves travel elsewhere until they reach a wall, floor or other surface in the room. These waves will bounce off that surface and may reach your ear somewhat later.

Where there is only one reflecting surface, such as the faraway wall of a canyon, the reflected waves produce an echo — a delayed repetition of the original sound. But in a cathedral, you’ll instead hear reverberation. This happens “when we have, say, a thousand reflections that are all coming back to us so fast that we can’t resolve any individual one of them,” says Braxton Boren. This draws out the sound, explains this acoustician. He works at American University in Washington, D.C. In fact, he notes, it can take several seconds for all the reverberations to slowly trail off
Hard surfaces, such as the marble and the other types of stone used in cathedrals, reflect sound waves well. This enhances reverberation. Softer surfaces — carpets, drapes and even people —absorb sound. They make noises die out more quickly.
Because waves take longer to travel between distant surfaces, large rooms tend to increase sound’s staying power. And cathedrals are “the most extreme version of this,” notes Boren. Before the fire, then, Notre Dame was like a mirrored funhouse room for sound, bouncing sounds around and around.
A room’s reverberation time is a measure of how many seconds it takes an initial, loud sound to no longer be heard, or at least to fade by 60 decibels. For a typical living room, that might be half a second. Good concert halls might have a reverberation time of two seconds. The reverberation time in cathedrals can exceed five seconds. (Look at a watch and see how long five seconds is.) 
Such long reverberation times can muddle fast-moving music passages as notes step on top of one another. Similarly, it can make speech hard to understand. But for organ music or religious chanting, “the acoustic conditions are really good,” says Álvarez-Morales. Indeed, she notes, this type of music was designed for such reverberating structures.
Did Notre Dame inspire musical harmony?
Gregorian chants were popular when Notre Dame was first being built. In that music, everyone sang the same note at once. But the sound environment in big cathedrals made successive notes overlap. This could have shown music composers which notes sounded good together. Eventually, some people might have tried writing music for singers to deliberately overlap their tones. Such a change — the introduction of harmony — would have been revolutionary.
If that’s what happened, the history of modern Western music may have been shaped by Notre Dame’s “voice.” So Notre Dame, says Braxton Boren of American University, is “incredibly historically significant.”
The aural measure of Notre Dame
On the day of the fire, Notre Dame’s acoustic history seemed in danger of being lost forever. As residents of Paris gathered to watch the blaze, “No one was really talking above a whisper,” Katz recalls. He opens his eyes wide while recalling the scene: “No one knew what to say or what to do.”
By the next day, he realized there was something he could do. His group had made the only detailed measurements of this church’s acoustics. That was on April 24, 2013 — about 850 years after Notre Dame’s first stone was laid. Katz and his colleagues had brought microphones and speakers. Late at night, after a concert had wound down and the last of the musicians had left, his team got to work.

Katz’s group was out to measure Notre Dame’s “room impulse response.” This describes how an initial sound within a room fades away. It also reveals subtle factors that can impact how people perceive a room’s sound. They can include the length of the delay between when sound waves first reach a listener and when later sets of them may arrive after bouncing off of hard surfaces.
To measure this, the researchers played a sound designed to test the full range of pitches that the human ear can hear. It starts out on a low note and slides up to a high note, like someone playing a slide whistle. They need to test them all. Lower pitches, for instance, might reverberate more than higher ones.
And the room’s response varied based on where the sound came from, and where a microphone had been. So the researchers moved the speaker and microphones from place to place and measured those responses each time. With these data, Katz calculated that for a pitch of middle C, Notre Dame’s reverberation averaged eight full seconds!

Next, Katz and his team turned to their computer model. It estimates how well the different surfaces — marble, stone and wood, for example — absorb or reflect sound. The computer program can estimate how long sounds would reverberate.
The team compared these simulations to the measurements. And the results were close, but didn’t quite match up for all of the pitches. So the researchers tweaked the sound-absorption estimates of various surfaces. Eventually, the acoustic properties of the simulated cathedral matched what the tests in 2013 had recorded.
The researchers then made an “auralization.” This is an alteration of some musical recording. Those changes should make the music sound as it would in various locations within Notre Dame.
Katz then went even further. He worked with a group of researchers to make a virtual-reality recreation of a performance in Notre Dame. It was complete with a 3-D visual model of the church’s interior. The viewer flies about the cathedral as the music plays, swooping low over the orchestra, then zipping up into high, secluded passageways. When viewers are virtually moved to the back of the building, the reverberation they hear is enhanced. So the individual notes will be more muddled. Turn your head, and the sound will change too. Those changes account for the new position of your ears.

The researchers started with the audio recorded at a 2013 concert in Notre Dame — the same night Katz had made his measurements. But that classical-music concert had been recorded by microphones placed close to the performers. These picked up mostly direct sound. There had been little reverberation. Using his computer model, however, Katz could recreate how the concert would have sounded to someone sitting in the audience or wandering through any part of the church.
In the future, Katz plans to tweak his computer model to account for changes in Notre Dame as it is being rebuilt. Even relatively minor choices might notably alter its sound. For example, by comparing his results with measurements from the 1980s, Katz showed that the addition of carpeting around the edges of the cathedral substantially cut down reverberations.
Explainer: How the ears work
Katz also aims to adjust his model to understand how Notre Dame may have sounded in the past. Past renovations included the addition of the church’s now-burned spire. In some eras, Katz suspects, the stone walls might have been coated with plaster and paint. At other times, straw might have lined the floors. Such features could have affected the church’s sound.
Crafting a soundscape
One thing Katz can’t yet do is reproduce the actual sounds that might have been present early in Notre Dame’s past. That’s the specialty of Pardoen. She’s the scientist who accompanied him to the damaged Notre Dame. She works for CNRS at the Maisons des Sciences de l’Homme in Lyon, France. She calls herself a “soundscape archaeologist.” By that, she means she pieces together the sounds of past environments, whether battlefields, cathedrals or cities.
With close cropped hair and dark clothes, she exudes a no-nonsense air. But she breaks the seriousness by frequently stopping to mimic the sounds she studies. For example, she copies the “choo click choo click” of a loom or the “crrrrrr” of stone cutters.
Her major project has been the creation of a video soundscape of central Paris during the second half of the 1700s. Back then, Paris bustled with people. Even the city’s bridges were crammed with buildings several stories high. Viewers of the video feel like they’re wandering those old streets, taking in the sounds. There’s the clacking of horse hooves. You hear a washerwomen at the banks of the river Seine. There’s even the buzzing of flies around a fish market.

To cultivate this sonic bouquet, Pardoen and her team consulted maps, historical documents and paintings. Then they collected historically accurate sounds. To do this, they might track down replicas of the original tools that would have been used. Then they would record them being used.
This allows Pardoen to virtually bring back the forgotten sounds of Notre Dame. In earlier times, artisans and merchants crowded the neighborhood around the cathedral. The racket they made would have leaked into the church’s interior. By inputting these sounds into Katz’s acoustic model, the pair aim to recreate the everyday ambience of Notre Dame at various times in its past.
Together, Katz and Pardoen are part of a group, the Association of Scientists in the Service of Notre Dame de Paris. This group aims to apply science to better understand the cathedral and aid in its rebuilding.
If Parisians want to restore the cathedral to its former acoustic splendor, they’ll have to decide which version of the church to approximate. Do they want the one that existed just before the fire? Would they prefer the Notre Dame of old? They might even want something entirely new and different.
“No historic building is ever completely static,” says Murphy. “As a consequence, this terrible fire, which is a considerable tragedy, is just the next stage in the life of Notre Dame.”
