Hensoldt equips Ukrainian helicopters with self-protection sensor technology for the first time
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 22/06/2023 - 17:00 in Helicopters
Sensor solution provider HENSOLDT is equipping Ukrainian Armed Forces helicopters for the first time with state-of-the-art detection and self-protection sensor technology.
The order comprises 16 AMPS (Airborne Missile Protection System) sensor solutions. The order value is in the two-digit range of millions. With the delivery, HENSOLDT is providing the Ukrainian armed forces with modern equipment required by current events. The Czech system integrator LOM PRAHA is planned as the equipment company.
“With the delivery of AMPS, we are ensuring an increase in the defense capacity of Ukrainian helicopters,” said Tanya Altmann, manager of the Optronics & Land Solutions division and managing director of HENSOLDT Optronics GmbH. “By integrating this platform for the first time, we are protecting crews from a wide range of threats, especially surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.”

The Airborne Missile Protection System is a flexible and independent self-protection system for helicopters and fixed-wapped aircraft. Its modular design allows the AMPS to be easily configured for specific operational requirements and for different mission profiles. Parts of the "AMPS" sensor solution are the Missile Launch Detection Sensor (MILDS), an Advanced Display and Control Unit (ACDU) and the Active Recognition System (MACS), which determines the range and speed of detected missiles and eliminates false alarms. Existing Countermeasure Dispensing Systems (CMDS) in helicopters can continue to operate with the current AMPS configuration.
A high percentage of aircraft losses in recent operational areas was caused by surface-to-air infrared missiles (IR SAMs). In addition, laser and radar threats are becoming more common in operational areas. To reliably detect these threats, AMPS can be configured with missile, laser and radar alert systems to provide the best possible protection through rapid detection. HENSOLDT already protects more than 2,000 different flying platforms with AMPS.

BAE and Sierra Nevada will compete with Northrop for USAF's GHOST SIGINT payload program
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/21/2021 - 14:00 in Military
BAE Systems and the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) revealed that they received a contract from the United States Air Force (USAF) for the development of a prototype project for a signal intelligence payload (SIGINT) under the Global High-altitude Open-system Sensor Technology (GHOST) program.
According to the contract, granted earlier this year, the team will provide a sensor prototype that gives an insight into the actions of opponents through the collection and analysis of electronic signals. It will explore the radio frequency (RF) spectrum, essential for the superiority of the battlefield, to detect, identify, locate and track RF emissions.
The duo joins Northrop Grumman, which announced its participation in the prototype sensor project earlier this month.
Both teams say they will provide a hardware and software solution based on open architecture, capable of being scaled and configured for various types of manned and unmanned aircraft.
"Our SIGINT technology is one of the few in the market designed from the beginning with open architecture," said David Logan, vice president and general manager of C4ISR Systems at BAE Systems. "We work closely with the customer community to design our solution in this way - giving the U.S. Air Force the ability to easily add new features in the future to combat evolving threats."
The project is led by the sensor division within the Directorate of Intelligence, Surveillance and Recognition and Special Operations Forces (ISR / SOF) of the U.S. Air Force Lifecycle Management Center.
They are looking to use the GHOST program to give them the flexibility to fly on different aircraft using a variety of sensors. In the initial configuration, the sensor will be housed inside a pod attached under the aircraft.
"We are designing it to be agnostic to the platform, or agile, so that it is easily transferable from one airborne platform to another based on the size, weight and power or SWAP available," said Jeremy Shock, Head of the Signal Intelligence Department.
In addition to being able to fly with manned aircraft or not, they are designing an open architecture system to allow the use of different hardware or software, depending on the mission and SWAP available.
"When we say open architecture, we're really talking about several different things," Shock said. "One of them is how it relates to the airborne platform itself. In addition, how it communicates with the soil. We want perfect common interfaces to send common messages so that they can be easily shared by the entire intelligence community."
The GHOST program was designated as a Section 804 rapid prototyping program and is currently working on a 12-month effort with three suppliers to design prototypes. In addition, the government will carry out an open architecture assessment on all three supplier systems at the AFRL Open Architecture Technology Laboratory. Following this effort, the GHOST team will make a font selection to select a supplier to build voable prototypes ?? to continue conducting the program to field the system.
