What is the Yoruba kingship system?
The Yoruba kingship system is a traditional form of government that has been practiced by the Yoruba people of Nigeria for centuries. The Yoruba kingship system is based on a hierarchy of rulers who are responsible for the governance and administration of their respective territories.
At the top of the Yoruba kingship system is the Ooni of Ife, who is considered to be the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people and the custodian of their cultural heritage. Below the Ooni are other kings and rulers, including the Alaafin of Oyo, the Oba of Benin, and the Alake of Egbaland, among others.
Each king or ruler is responsible for the governance of their own territory or city-state, and they are expected to maintain law and order, promote economic prosperity, and uphold the traditions and customs of the Yoruba people. The kings are also responsible for settling disputes and conflicts within their territories and maintaining good relations with neighboring kingdoms.
The Yoruba kingship system is steeped in tradition and culture, and the roles and responsibilities of the kings are deeply respected by the Yoruba people. Despite the influence of modernization and the Nigerian government, the Yoruba kingship system remains an important aspect of Yoruba culture and identity.

transmutation as legitimate life trajectory: exposing implicit biases of the Wardview Hunters’ Guild
The recent bulletin posted by the Hunters’ Guild is perhaps the most transparent attempt at fearmongering which has been penned in recent months. If one were to believe the Guild, they would have no choice but to come to the conclusion that there is an epidemic of irresponsible witches roaming the streets of Wardview, transmuting any innocent bystander into something which is not human.
According to the Guild, there is no possible reason that citizens would choose transmutation; it is only the choice made by someone unsound of mind and/or under extreme duress.
Never mind the fact that there are historical documents dating as far back as the 1100s detailing how humans have chosen to shed their humanity.
In the European stage there were stories dating back to the time of Arthurian legends of individuals choosing to ‘Melion’ themselves, roaming the countryside as wolves for rites of passage; the Northern Song dynasty saw nobles choosing to live as birds to better understand how to transform the harmony of nature to the balance of the state; and the Oyo Empire saw the possibility of one of its alaafins turning into a spirit of lightning and flame (Murky Waters: The Line Between History and Mythological Heroes, Adeoye et al., 2021) .
Even if one disregards these accounts as mere fiction, one cannot disregard the myriad of memoirs penned either by the transmuted or someone recording the oration of the transmuted.
In Lenora Pavarichi’s Memoirs of a Wine Barrel, the transmuted, one formerly known as Theodori Medici, purportedly used the different flows of the wine inside its body to give voice to its new life experience (1548). Medici describes the religious devotion that led him to shed his humanity. “I have attained a state which the friars only dream,” stated the wine barrel, “It is a beautiful hollowing of vessel and self; the soul transcends where the hallowed shell remains. I know what Christ desired in asking the Apostles to drink of Him.”
Religious fervor is far from the sole reason for transmutation. There have been countless stories where runaways saw transmutation as a way to escape. While most stories end with the runaway choosing to return to human form, others, such as the account told by Maria Santos Primavera, has the runaway choosing to remain as something other than human (Harpy Tails: the History of Girls’ Flight from Life in the Abbey, Magboo, 2008). Primavera describes how the tawitawi doves were the sole familiar thing she saw when sent to live as a nun. “It was like a sign from home- one saying, come back, come see us, we will be as you left us.” (Harpy Tails, 2008).
While the hand of Spanish colonialism would, in effect, change everything, Primavera’s transmutation into a harpy bearing resemblance to her beloved tawitawi allowed her to hold onto a piece of her home. This is perhaps the most prevalent reason why humans have chosen to become something “Other” throughout the ages; searching for a sense of purpose, of belonging, and of home.
Is it any surprise, then, that there is an entire romance subgenre in circles within the Know where one lover changes their species to be with their love interest? One only needs to look at the local bookstore to find Leticia G. Smith’s Dram of Whiskey, a wildly popular historical romance set in the Jazz Age. It is a book where the protagonist, Ruthie Jean, must choose between continuing to make music in an industry that won’t recognize her talent or run away with her lover, known only as ‘Blue’, into the waters of the Mississippi as a riverdram. Considering the content of the rest of the article, you can imagine what Ruthie Jean’s ultimate decision is. This novel is itself one of Smith’s best selling works, outsold only by the academic reports of her cousins.
Transmutation for love isn’t solely in the bounds of fiction, however. If the Hunter’s Guild would only look back over its own interview logs, it would see that at least one of the recent transmutations- one only identifying himself as 化茧 (Hua Jian), and one identifying herself as 成蝶 (Cheng Die), both apparently speaking under the condition of anonymity- has done so specifically for this reason. After both consented to be transmuted into faeries, their testimony was given through the medium of flight pattern, spelling out the story of their families’ refusal to allow them to see each other. Rather than continue on in human society, they decided to take the plunge into transmutation together. Though they sometimes watch over their old human families from afar, both have expressed happiness in their choice. “Being in this [butterfly-esque] form is pretty much like a dream- now we can fill our days with each other.” (“Butterfly Dancers”, Wardview Review, May 202X).
I ask: where is the epidemic that the Hunters’ Guild is stirring moral panic over? By their own admission, all 23 of the suspected ‘forced transmutations’ have no curse placed on them to remain silent. No wizard has found evidence of magic tampering with their thought process. All 23 interviewed have spoken at length for their reasoning to shed their humanity, and yet the Guild is not satisfied. I ask: what would it take to satisfy the Guild’s extraneous interrogations?
And I answer: nothing. The Hunters’ Guild of Greater Wardview believes itself to be the arbiter of personhood; to them, humanity is the height of existence, and any deviation therein is to be met with skepticism. Many in Guild leadership cannot fathom a world where someone would choose to change their species because they cannot fathom a world where someone would refuse to be human.
As such, they feel they must dramatize the situation. They must fret over the paltry 27 transmutations which have occurred in Wardview because they are a number above zero. They must claim that all transmuted did so under duress, because otherwise, there would be no crime to hunt witches over. They must humanize all those transmuted and force them through the traumatic bureaucratic process of “legally” transmuting their species again to “protect” them.
In truth, the Guild only wants for there to be more humans in Wardview.

This article has a neat summary of the overall history of the Oyo Empire:
To further examine the history of the Oyo Empire, it should be noted that it too inherited some of the same weaknesses as the Zulu and other militarized autocratic states, namely the habit in pre-industrial autocracies that if generals were not properly rigidly kept in line by terror they were likely to do the pronunciamento regardless of whether or not it destabilized the state. As with the Ummayyads taking down enfeebled Byzantine and Sassanian infrastructure, so did the Sokoto Caliphate emerge like the icheneumon wasp from a caterpillar weakened by putsch and civil war, not a strong state taken down by the heroic valor of Mujahideen.
That, of course, is how the Fulani prefer to remember it as people tend to exaggerate the strengths of their enemies to strengthen their own claims to glory. In this the Oyo Empire was not unique tot the same realities that afflicted other states like it, the distinction is that it was not European power that destroyed it but a Jihad launched by one of the many bloody-handed reformer imperialists a dime a dozen in Islamic history.

This is Lukman Gbadegesin Chosen by Oyomesi, A British-fulani Colony in the heartland of Yoruba.
Tumblr media
The prince was chosen by Oyomesi. Governor Makinde rejected him. He said the process was flawed and manipulated to favor him. He insisted on a new process free and fair. Before we talk about him, let’s talk about his grandfather His grandfather was King Belo Gbadegesin. He worked with the British to build a Fulani Yoruba alliance which the homegrown Yoruba nationalists at the time led by Awolowo rejected. Belo detested anything Yoruba tradition. He refused to live in the old palace and built a new one with a mosque in the compound.
Tumblr media
He stayed away from cultural activities and redefined the position of the Alaafin as a custodian of tradition. King Belo disliked the sage for rejecting friendship with the North. When Akintola eventually worked with them to get the sage out of the way, he honored him by conferring to him the title of Aare Ona Kakanfo. Among his wives and offspring. Let’s save that for another day to avoid gaslighting. Fast forward. His son Lukman Gbadegesin. A chip off the old block. Totally dissociated from anything traditional at Oyo. He grew up in Sokoto. Under the guidance of Arab/Fulani scholars. Politically, Lukman Gbadegesin identifies with Northern interests. He used these connections to lobby for the throne. The Bashorun along with a few clerics working with the North worked day and night to make sure he got the throne. Details of this are too sensitive to discuss on tabloids but for Makinde, he would be Alaafin today and the great throne of Oyo would be an extension of Sokoto Caliphate. Oyo is the symbol of Fulani resistance. Ancient kings suffered many humiliations to preserve the throne. When Alaafin Amodo rejected Sokoto, his kingdom was invaded and the Alapini shrine was looted. All the Egungun dresses were carried away along with all the young single women at Oyo. Alaafin Oluewu was taken to Ilorin as a prisoner after he was captured at the Eleduwe war of 1835, tried and openly executed for refusing to surrender Oyo to Ilorin and Gwandu. Atiba moved the capital to preserve the kingdom, rather than watch it fall into the hands of Emir Shita of Ilorin. What they could not do through war. They are trying to do this through peace. Yoruba autonomy should never be compromised or surrendered to alien influence, not even in the name of religion. Read the full article

By • Olalekan Fagbade Nomination of candidate for Alaafin stool didn’t follow due process – Oyomesi tells Gov Makinde The aggrieved traditional kingmakers in Oyo town, known as Oyomesi, have said that Gov. Seyi Makinde should reject the nominee forwarded to him as the next Alaafin of Oyo because his selection did not follow due process. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the kingmakers comprised the Agbaakin of Oyo, High Chief Asimiyu Atanda, the Samu of Oyo, High Chief Alhaji Lamidi Oyewale and Baale Ajagba, Chief Odurinde Olusegun. The kingmakers, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, said that the process that led to the selection of a certain nominee was flawed and could, therefore, not stand. NAN reports that the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola had, in a media interview, said that the Oyomesi was waiting on the governor for a formal announcement of the new Alaafin and his eventual inauguration. “We concluded the selection process for the new Alaafin on Oct. 4, 2022 and we informed the state government of our decision immediately. “As the law of the land demands, we didn’t get any petition against our decision but a suit was filed against us. “We got our own lawyer and we won the case, with the court throwing away the case and stating that the initial decision that Oyomesi made was right. “Since then, we have expected the governor to make an announcement but he didn’t. We will continue to wait for him to do that,” Ayoola was quoted to have said. However, the aggrieved kingmakers faulted the statement credited to him, submitting that he failed to convey a meeting of the Oyomesi, in flagrant disregard to the governor’s directive. They also alleged that the Basorun disregarded the town’s chieftaincy process, with the nomination of a warrant chief without recourse to the laid down procedure. The kingmakers said it was wrong on the part of the high chief to ‘unilaterally’ co-opt warrant officers into the council without the consent of other kingmakers and approval of the local government authority as well as the governor “There are five living members of the Oyomesi and there are two warrant chiefs eligible to nominate/recommend a nominee to the governor of Oyo State for appointment as the Alaafin. The kingmakers met only once in 2022 with the following members in attendance: Basorun, Agbaakin, Samu, Akinniku, Lagunna (Oyomesi), joined by Aare Ago Basorun and Alapo (both warrant chiefs unilaterally selected by Basorun without the knowledge or consent of the Oyomesi). “As a matter of fact, one of the contestants wrote a letter of protest questioning the inclusion of the warrant chiefs in the kingmakers’ council. “It was at the meeting of this ill-constituted seven-member kingmakers’ committee that a nominee for the office of the Alaafin was sent to the government for endorsement. “Immediately after submitting our nomination, we got the government response that our nomination could not be accepted because we did not follow due process in coming to our resolution. “The government directed that we should go back and do our work properly in accordance with the (chieftaincy) declaration. “It was also discovered that one of the warrant chiefs, who participated in our earlier resolution, was replaced with Alajagba,” they said. The kingmakers further stated that they were directed to meet and follow due process, claiming, however, that no meeting of the Oyomesi had been convened by the Basorun since last year. “The new member of the kingmakers (Alajagba) has been denied the opportunity of participating in or contributing to the resolutions of the kingmakers since his official appointment in 2022. This is because of the blunt refusal of the Basorun to comply with the directive of government for due process in our task of recommending of a nominee to the government,” the kingmaker said.
They recalled that the governor had, during an official visit to Oyo about seven months ago, held a meeting with the Oyomesi. “He specifically told us of his government’s insistence that due process must be followed in the nomination of candidate for the Alaafin stool, as government was only interested in the best for Oyo town. “Recently, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs invited us to a meeting in his office. While some of us honoured the invitation, Basorun and others did not attend the meeting,” the kingmakers said. Meanwhile, members of the Atiba royal families have vowed to resist any attempt to scheme them out of the selection process of the new Alaafin. In a statement by issued on behalf of the families on Monday by Prince Sina Afolabi, they alleged that the kingmakers did not follow due process in their nomination of the candidate for the vacant Alaafin stool. “We acknowledge that there were some improper arrangements made in the past, which have since been rejected by the government. “These arrangements did not represent a due process that reflects the genuine selection of a new Alaafin. We fully support the government’s decision on this matter. “We firmly believe that any process that excludes the nine royal families cannot be considered valid. “It is essential that justice, fairness and equity are upheld in the selection processes. “To ensure this, we urge Gov. Seyi Makinde to implement the 1976 Adekunle Ladeinde report by allowing the nine ruling houses, including Olawoyin, to participate in the selection processes. “It is the duty of the government to promote peace and harmony within the community. We sincerely hope that our plea for justice and fairness will be heard and acted upon,” the Atiba royal families said. (NAN) #NominationofcandidateforAlaafinstooldidn’tfollowdueprocesssaysOyomesi
