Joseph Octave van der Donckt - Portrait of Albert Gregorius - 1795
Franciscus Joseph Octave van der Donckt (30 June 1757, Aalst - 16 August 1813, Bruges) was a Flemish portrait painter, miniaturist and pastellist. He is also referred to as Jozef Angelus Van der Donckt, as well as several other variations, too numerous to list.
Albert Jacob Frans Gregorius, or Albert Jacques François Grégorius (26 October 1774, Bruges - 25 February 1853, Bruges) was a Flemish-Belgian portrait painter and Director of the art academy in Bruges.
He was born into a poor, laboring family. His drawing abilities were observed by François van der Donckt, a local portrait painter who took him in, gave him his first lessons and helped him enroll at the art academy. Gregorius was there from 1791 to 1793 and won several awards.
In 1801, he went to Paris, where he was apprenticed to Joseph-Benoît Suvée, who was also from Bruges. Not long after, Suvée went to Rome to become Director of the French Academy, but Gregorius was able to find a position in the studios of Jacques-Louis David. In 1805, he was back in Bruges, making preparations to enter the Prix de Rome, but fell ill and was unable to participate.
After his recovery, he returned to Paris and remained until 1835. He soon established a reputation as a portrait painter and formed an association with other expatriate Flemish artists ("De Club van de Belgen"). After exhibiting in the Ghent Salon, he entered the Paris Salon in 1812 and would continue to display there annually until his departure. In addition to the usual French nobility, he is also known for his portrait of August Wilhelm Schlegel, which is now on display at Coppet Castle.
At the age of 61, he received an appointment as Director of "De Vrije Academie" (now "De Stedelijke Academie") in Bruges. He served until 1852, when he was forced to resign after clashes with colleagues, students and city officials over his conservative approach to art. His best-known student was Ford Madox Brown.
Curiously, on his death certificate he was described as a "widower", but his wife's name was unknown. It has been speculated that he was briefly married during his long stay in France and had no close relatives he cared to notify.

Buna karşın Bruno, Epikures, Hypatia, Dante, Bacon, Balzac, Simone de Beauvoir, Bruno, Kopernik, Descartes, Diderot, Alexandre Dumas, Prusya Kralı Freidrich II, Galileo, Helvetius, Hobbes, Hugo, Hume, Kant, Kepler, La Fontaine, Locke, Luther, Machiavelli, Montaigne, Montesquieu, Proudhon, Rousseau, Sade, Sartre, Spinoza, Voltaire, Emile Zola, Marx, Engels, Prodhon, Saint Simon, Nietzsche, Hegel, Albert Camus vb filozof felsefecileri sevmez islamda sevmez…Antik çağda, orta çağda taş günümüze kadar mistiği ön plana çıkaran filozof, felsefeci vb leri her din sevmiştir…

Yankees will continue youth movement with eye on lowering payroll
New Post has been published on http://usnewsaggregator.com/yankees-will-continue-youth-movement-with-eye-on-lowering-payroll/
Yankees will continue youth movement with eye on lowering payroll
It’s all about the youth.
That’s where the Yankees are now, with the World Series between Houston and Los Angeles set to begin tonight at Dodger Stadium.
The foundation of the club was formed in 2017, with Aaron Judge (25), Gary Sanchez (24), Greg Bird (24) and Luis Severino (23) leading the way. That quartet, plus Jordan Montgomery (24) and Chad Green (26) — all of them pre-arbitration eligible — made just under $3.3 million combined this past season.
For a franchise looking to pare down its payroll below the $197 million luxury-tax threshold in 2018, getting a tax rate reset in advance of a potential free-agent spending bonanza in 2019 (the class will include Bryce Harper, Manny Machado and maybe Clayton Kershaw if he opts out), that’s significant.
10 best Yankees moments of memorable 2017 season
And more young, cost-controllable Baby Bombers will dictate how the Yankees conduct business this offseason.
Young stars like Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez are assets that are both productive and inexpensive.
(Elsa/Getty Images)
CC Sabathia ($25 million), Alex Rodriguez ($21 million), Matt Holliday ($13 million), Michael Pineda ($7.4 million) and Todd Frazier ($5 million adjusted) will account for $71.4 million coming off the books. Still, between Masahiro Tanaka ($22 million if he opts in), Jacoby Ellsbury ($21.1 million), Aroldis Chapman ($20 million), Chase Headley ($13 million), David Robertson ($13 million), Brett Gardner ($11.5 million) and Starlin Castro ($10.9 million), the Bombers already have $111.5 million committed to seven players for 2018.
Add in projected arbitration figures calculated by mlbtraderumors.com for Adam Warren ($3.1 million), Didi Gregorius ($9 million), Dellin Betances ($4.4 million), Sonny Gray ($6.6 million), Austin Romine ($1.2 million), Aaron Hicks ($2.9 million), Tommy Kahnle ($1.3 million) and Chasen Shreve ($900k) totaling nearly $30 million, and you can see how the numbers add up quickly, and things can get pretty complicated.
Fortunately for the Yankees, there are several youngsters like Gleyber Torres (20), Clint Frazier (23), Miguel Andujar (22) and Chance Adams (23) who could impact next season’s roster. And others high-caliber prospects like Justus Sheffield (21), Estevan Florial (19) and Albert Abreu (22) are currently playing in the Arizona Fall League, continuing to evolve and develop.
Brian Cashman: Yankees beat an injured Corey Kluber in ALDS
A serious pursuit of Shohei Ohtani (23), the Japanese two-way star, will also happen, as he fits the mold of young and cost-controllable, with massive potential who can fill two roles (DH and starter) on one roster spot.
Unloading expensive veteran contracts, such as that of Jacoby Ellsbury, would go a long way toward creating payroll flexibility in 2018 and beyond.
(Elsa/Getty Images)
As it stands, a Sabathia return on a one-year deal for less money makes a lot of sense. Frazier, for all his leadership and intangibles, would be the tougher fit on a multi-year deal given that Headley could always play third as Torres (recovering from Tommy John surgery and expected to start in Triple-A, but impact the big club shortly thereafter) and Andujar await their respective opportunities.
It’s also reasonable to believe that the Bombers will at least see what they can get for veterans like Ellsbury, Castro and Headley.
Optimally, Ellsbury would be the best one to trade — as he could allow Clint Frazier to play sort of Hicks’ old role — but he’s also likely to be the most difficult to deal.
De Blasio praises Yanks for defying ‘the odds’ in personal tweet
Headley’s versatility and professionalism was really valuable in 2017, and could be moving forward. Castro is Torres’ mentor, and can hit well in spurts. But his defense was disappointing during the playoffs.
Regardless, you can expect more youth on the 2018 roster. And if this past season was any indication, that’s a good thing.

New York Yankees' Gleyber Torres too good to give up
New York Yankees’ Gleyber Torres too good to give up
[ad_1]
A hot topic across baseball land the past few days: Would you trade Gleyber Torres for Jacob deGrom?
It’s fun to speculate about. The Mets are looking like a mess again and in theory should at least consider shopping deGrom to kick-start a rebuild of sorts and create more depth in the organization. The Yankees could certainly use some help in the rotation, and they could trade Torres and…

Bütün o iktidarlar,  paralar,  nükleer silahlar, savaş uçakları, saraylar, şatafatlı yaşamlar… Nokta kadar bir virüs… Anlamını kaybeden hayatlar… Ve… "Ah, keşke bir deprem olsaydı! Tam bir sarsıntı... ve bu iş biterdi. Ama şu domuz hastalık! Hastalığa yakalanmamış olanlar bile onu içinde taşıyor." Diyen Albert Camus. Adına modernlik dediğimiz sosyal durumumuz, bize her şeyi yapabilecekmişiz gibi bir özgüven vermiş, tıpta devasa ilerleme kaydetmiş olsak ta sonuçta oksijen, karbon, hidrojen, azot, kalsiyum ve fosfordan oluşmuş primatlarız. Ölmek hâlâ ‘kolay” yani. Hele bizim memlekette… Dünyadaki her koşul birinin “azı” diğerinin “fazlası”…

The Yankees have depth at every position, and that is huge
It’s almost inconceivable for a team to go through a full 162 game season with no injuries, especially in the modern baseball era. Beyond injuries, players can suffer from periods of fatigue, horrific slumps, or even unexpected poor performance. Teams sometimes must move on from a player they thought would be a huge part of their team in the middle of a season.
It is so important for a championship caliber team to have depth. Every team has minor leaguers who could step into a role if they are needed. Most teams don’t have players at every position who could step in and have already proven that can be effective. Most backup options are inherently unpredictable and risky. Heck, many teams can’t even fill out their starting lineups without placing unpredictable and risky players on the card.
Depth is a commodity; a commodity, I might add, that the Yankees have in spades for 2019. The Yankees have reliable, predictable, and good players ready to step in at every position. Part of it is the major success of their farm system. It is also from their emphasis on obtaining versatile players in recent years. Lastly, it is partially due to the fact that they have been able to attract players to play in New York even without the guarantee of regular playing time all season. They are in the enviable position of being a winning team that players want to be a part of.
Perhaps the area of best depth at the top of the Yankees’ organization is the infield. The Yankees will most likely start the season with Luke Voit at first base, Gleyber Torres at second base, Troy Tulowitzki at short stop, and Miguel Andujar at third base. D.J. Lemahiue will be the utility infielder who can play first, second, or third. Tyler Wade will likely be the other utility who can play short stop and second base. At some point, Didi Gregorius will return as well, giving them even more depth. Gleyber Torres can also play an excellent shortstop if he ever is needed there. The early returns on Thairo Estrada are that he is finally back to 100%. Estrada is a great depth piece to have. If he truly is back to 100%, he is an all-around great player and could be a starting infielder on most teams. If Luke Voit ends up busting or getting hurt, the Yankees could call on Greg Bird, who has shown promise in the past and is a legitimate 30 homerun threat if he can ever get himself right again. The Yankees can trot Lemahiue out at third base if Andujar is not improving with his glove. Moreover, once Gregorius comes back, the Yankees can move Tulowitzki over there as needed.
The outfield also has tremendous depth. The Yankees will start the season with Judge in right, Hicks in center, and Stanton in left. On days when Stanton or Judge are DH, Gardner can play left field. If there is an injury, Clint Frazier can slot in to any of the corner positions. If Hicks gets hurt, Gardner moves to center and Frazier can play left. Jacoby Ellsbury is on the roster but I wouldn’t rely on him for anything. Worst case scenario, the Yankees have Zack Zehner and Trey Amburgey in Triple-A, who could probably fill in and hold their own in the majors at this point if needed.
At catcher the Yankees have Gary Sanchez, one of the best catchers in the league when healthy. There’s an excellent chance he is much better in 2019 than he was in 2018. Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka will back him up. Both are as good as any backup in the league. Neither are likely to be starting catchers on any other team in the league though. Ideally, you’d like another starting catcher level player behind Sanchez, but it’s hard to sign someone who is good enough to be a starting catcher and tell them they will be the backup.
I believe the Yankees could have done more to shore up their rotation this offseason, but they do still have great depth. Their starting five will be Luis Severino, James Paxton, Masahiro Tanaka, JA Happ, and CC Sabathia. This is a solid group. Jordan Montgomery should return anywhere between June and August (12-15 months after Tommy John Surgery). It’s tough to rely on him because there’s about a 10-15% chance he doesn’t get back to full strength. That said, if he gets back to full strength, he has already proven he can be an effective major league starter. He could be useful down the stretch to limit innings for other pitchers, and potentially fill any holes that are left by injuries. He’s a phenomenal depth piece to have. The Yankees have flirted with placing Domingo German in the rotation for years. He has never seized a spot so far, but if there are some injuries, he could fill that role. With his stuff, it’s great to have a guy like him ready in the wings if needed. Jonathan Loaisiga is another wonderful depth piece. He has the stuff to be a marquee starter if he continues to develop. Michael King made a splash last year and ascended to Triple-A. His stuff improved dramatically, and he has pinpoint control. He suffered from shoulder inflammation at the start of Spring Training, so he may be a few weeks before he is up to speed and ready to contribute. Hopefully the injury is nothing serious and doesn’t sap him of his newfound power. If not, King is a huge depth piece who could contribute in a major way this season. The Yankees also have Luis Cessa, Domingo Acevedo, Chance Adams, Albert Abreu, Brian Keller, and Garrett Whitlock as useful starting pitcher depth players. The starting pitching depth is fantastic.
The Yankees’ relievers are the best in the league. It’s tough to argue that a better bullpen exists. They will likely start the season with Chapman as the closer. Dellin Betances, Adam Ottavino, Zach Britton, and Chad Green will form the setup crew in some capacity. Jonathan Holder and Tommy Kahnle will probably make the team as the 6th and 7th reliever. The 8th reliever could be Luis Cessa, Domingo German, Joe Harvey, Stephen Tarpley, or Ben Heller. The fact that five people could make it as the 8th reliever tells you that there is depth. The fact that any one of these guys would probably do a great job in the role tells you that the depth they have is quality. You can stack on top of this that the Yankees also have JP Feyereisen, Raynel Espinal, Nestor Cortes, James Reeves, and Phillip Diehl sitting in Triple-A ready to contribute. They have tremendous depth and shouldn’t have to make a single trade for a reliever this season.
The only roster change that appears necessary this season is to upgrade one of their 3-5 starters. Elsewhere, the Yankees may need to upgrade their first base situation if Voit and Bird don’t work out. If the Yankees can manage to do these two things, they could be looking at 28.
This roster is built to endure a full season; injuries, disappointments, fatigue, and all. With one or two mid-season additions, they should even be built well enough for a serious championship run.

De toespraak van premier Rhuggenaath: Address by His Excellency, Mr. Eugene Rhuggenaath, Prime Minister of Curaçao
Address by His Excellency, Mr. Eugene Rhuggenaath, Prime Minister of Curaçao New Year’s Cocktail-Party in honor of the Consular Representatives in Willemstad Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, 15 January 2019
As protocol has been observed, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year. I send my heartfelt wishes for 2019 to be a marvellous year bringing joy and prosperity to one and all. We stand today at a place, when challenges and sacrifices of recent times, have given us the confidence to achieve the goals we have set for the future. As I have addressed during the national discourse held on the 2nd of January, Curaçao is going through trying times. The tremendous challenge and responsibility is to now define a new trajectory for Curaçao. We have every reason to believe, that the promise of the future cannot be undone by the difficulties of the present, because we are a resilient, creative and proud nation that has shown the world that we can do great things. For baseball there are as usual various players that make us proud everyday such as Kenley Jansen, Andrelton Simmons, Jonathan Schoop and Didi Gregorius to name a few. In football, our national team was number 1 in the CONCACAF Nations League and various of our players are active in the Premier League in England, Bundesliga in Germany and Eredivisie in the Netherlands. Our Miss Curaçao, Akisha Albert was a Top 10 finalist in the Miss Universe 2018 and our mister Curaçao, Anthony Clarinda, became the new Mister Universe 2018. We must reinforce our core values as a people while remaining relevant and responsive in a rapidly evolving and often hostile world, which threatens the viability of small island developing states, like ours. Peace and social stability can only exist when all of the citizens of this island are given the opportunity and space to thrive. And trade and business can only flourish when the society develops and the people are able to buy each other’s goods and services. These are beautiful thoughts, but I (and my government) cannot achieve this alone. As Halford E. Luccock stated, “No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” And all of us standing here play an instrument in a section that is vital for the entirety of the piece. I am convinced that if we can ensure that all citizens are dynamically engaged, with all people, whether male or female, young or old, and to those who are able to demonstrate their abilities to the greatest possible extent, we can create the greatest symphony Curaçao has ever known. Now that I am speaking about music, I was incredibly happy to hear that reggae has finally received an UNESCO protected status. As happy as I am about this, we need to work on our tumba and kaha di òrgel receiving a similar status. Some of the ways this symphony of collaboration can be achieved is by facilitating the connection between Curaçao and the nations you as consuls represent. Some examples from last year include: The seminar that the outgoing honorary consul of Finland, organized on renewable energy; Another is the donation of various books by the Chinese consul which can help engage our people to learn more; Lastly, the honorary consul of Germany helped to attract German investors by planning a visit this past year. Both are examples on how we can build an open and more inclusive world through exchanges and mutual learning. Ladies and Gentlemen, Great visions can only be realized through actions. Actions hold the key to building a community of shared future for us all. To achieve this goal, the community here today should promote partnership, security, growth, inter-cultural exchanges and building of a sound orchestra. In 2019, let’s continue to celebrate the values that unite us – openness, compassion, equality, and inclusion. May I also remind you, in honour of Martin Luther King Jr. (who would have been 90 years old today), “Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability…We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always right to do right”. I implore you to help us with this progress. Let us not wait for the “right time” to move forward together. The time will always be right and put our values into practice in order to build a world that holds a better future for all of us. And as we move forward and look at the time, we do unfortunately have to say goodbye or rather see you later to friends who have helped us along the way. As I hand over to the outgoing honorary consul of Finland, Mrs. Helga Mensing, who would like to say a few words of thanks, I wish to stand still and give my heartfelt gratitude to this remarkable lady who has been the honorary consul of Finland since 1985. Mrs. Mensing, you will be sorely missed with all your contributions as a consul and as Dean of the Consular Corps of Curaçao, such as the before mentioned seminar or helping to organize the Bazaar with the Uniting for Children Foundation. Once again thank you so very much. And thank you for your attention.

Yankees’ luxury tax payroll situation for 2018
Thoughts following the end of the 2018 regular season
(Jim McIsaac/Getty)
Updated: 10/1/18
Estimated 2018 Yankees’ luxury tax payroll: $192.5M 2018 luxury tax threshold: $197 million
The 2018 regular season is complete. The Yankees were, as expected, one of the best teams in MLB. They finished 100-62 with a +182 run differential despite a barrage of injuries that sent Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Clint Frazier, and Jordan Montgomery to the disabled list for long stretches of time. Others like Didi Gregorius and Aroldis Chapman have missed time as well. Overall though, the Baby Bombers are pretty rad.
One number has been hanging over the Yankees all year: $197M. That is the luxury tax threshold for the 2018 season. Ownership and the front office are adamant the Yankees will get under the threshold this year — they’ve paid luxury tax every year since the system was put in place in 2003 — which would reset their luxury tax rate. Right now the Yankees are taxed at the maximum 50%.
As the season progressed the team’s payroll situation evolved due to call-ups and midseason additions. Every change to the roster changed the luxury tax payroll. Because getting under the $197M threshold this year is an important stated goal, we did our best to keep track of the payroll situation with this intermittently updated post. Here’s where the Yankees stand as of October 1st.
On September 10th, the last time I updated the payroll situation, I had the Yankees with a $197.1M projected luxury tax payroll for the season, which was over the $197M threshold. Now I have that at $192.5M after the season. Let me explain.
1. Most bonuses were not accrued. Most notably, CC Sabathia fell two innings short of a $500,000 bonus because he was ejected for throwing at Jesus Sucre last week. That was the whole “that’s for you, bitch” episode. Here’s a recap of bonuses we know definitively the Yankees will not have to pay out:
Lance Lynn: $1M each for 170 and 180 innings pitched (finished with 156.2 IP total)
Andrew McCutchen: $25,000 for All-Star Game (Giants would’ve paid this anyway)
David Robertson: $15,000 for All-Star Game; $25,000 for All-Star Game starter
CC Sabathia: $500,000 each for 155, 165, 175, and 185 innings pitched (finished with 153 IP)
Giancarlo Stanton: $50,000 for All-Star Game
Neil Walker: $125,000 each for 425, 450, 475, and 500 plate appearances (finished with 398 PA)
That is $4,615,000 worth of possible bonuses right there, with most of it being tied up in Lynn’s and Sabathia’s innings. That’s a lot of money! When you’re counting every penny to stay under a hard payroll cap, these bonuses have to be considered. They can sneak up on you.
I included many of these bonuses in the last payroll update because they are real dollars that have to be considered, but now that the regular season is over, we know they won’t be paid out. That’s why our luxury tax payroll estimate dropped from $197.1M to $192.5M since our last update.
2. There are still several bonuses possible. Playing time and All-Star Game bonuses were not reached this season. We know that now. There are still several awards bonuses lingering, however, and these will count against the luxury tax payroll. Here’s a breakdown of the bonuses that are still possible:
Andrew McCutchen: $25,000 each Gold Glove and World Series MVP; $125,000 for MVP; $75,000 for MVP second place; $50,000 for MVP third place
David Robertson: $25,000 for Gold Glove; $50,000 for Sporting News All-Star; $75,000 for ALCS MVP; $100,000 each for MVP and Cy Young; $90,000 each for MVP and Cy Young second place; $80,000 each for MVP and Cy Young third place; $70,000 each for MVP and Cy Young fourth place; $60,000 each for MVP and Cy Young fifth place
Giancarlo Stanton: $50,000 each for Gold Glove and Silver Slugger; $100,000 for MVP; $25,000 for ALCS MVP; $50,000 for World Series MVP
That is $800,000 worth of outstanding bonuses. Some of these we can say will not be triggered with reasonable certainty. McCutchen is not winning an AL Gold Glove or the AL MVP award. Robertson’s not winning the AL MVP and/or AL Cy Young, or even finishing in fifth place. The chances of Robertson and Stanton being named ALCS co-MVPs, and McCutchen and Stanton being named World Series co-MVPs, are small. So on so forth.
These bonuses are still out there though and can be accrued, so we might as well include them in our estimate. At this point, that $800,000 in possible bonuses is insignificant anyway. The Yankees have plenty of room under the $197M luxury tax threshold. Enough that they could even pay Sabathia that $500,000 bonus he missed because of the ejection as a thank you without putting the luxury tax plan in danger. That’s not going to happen, of course. I’m just saying.
3. The Yankees added salary at the trade deadline (duh). Boy, were the Yankees active at the trade deadline or what? They made six trades in the week leading up to July 31st and five had a direct impact on the 25-man (and thus 40-man) roster, which means they had luxury tax implications. They then made two more trades prior to the August 31st postseason eligibility deadline. Here’s a recap of the trade deadline activity:
Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carroll for Zach Britton. (RAB post)
Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney for J.A. Happ. (RAB post)
Chasen Shreve and Gio Gallegos for Luke Voit and $1M in international bonus money. (RAB post)
Caleb Frare for $1.5M in international bonus money. (RAB post)
Adam Warren for $1.25M in international bonus money. (RAB post)
Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo for Lance Lynn. (RAB post)
Abi Avelino and Juan De Paula for Andrew McCutchen. (RAB post)
Cash or a player to be named later for Adeiny Hechavarria. (RAB post)
(Frare was not on the 40-man roster. That trade had zero impact on the luxury tax payroll.)
Prior to all those trades, the projected luxury tax payroll sat at $184.1M. Now it’s up to $192.5M. So yes, the Yankees did take on salary at the deadline, though perhaps not as much as you’d think. Trading away Drury, Shreve, and especially Warren offset some of the salary gains, plus the Twins and Giants paid half Lynn’s and McCutchen’s remaining salary, respectively.
As for Hechavarria, he is making $5.9M this season, but the Associated Press reports the Yankees were only responsible for the pro-rated portion of the $545,000 league minimum, or roughly $88,000. The Rays and Pirates are paying the rest. The Lynn and Warren moves were essentially payroll neutral. The Yankees really only took on salary with Britton, Happ, and McCutchen at the deadline.
4. The call-ups are complicated. Pre-arbitration-eligible players on split contracts — the majority of the players on the roster, basically — get paid one salary at the Major League level and a different salary in the minors, and their luxury tax hits are pro-rated. The MLB season is 186 days long and say, for example, a player spends 100 days in MLB and 86 days in the minors. His luxury tax hit is then 100 days of MLB salary plus 86 days of MiLB salary.
It’s important to note only minor leaguers on the 40-man roster count against the luxury tax payroll. Jace Peterson, Shane Robinson, David Hale, Stephen Tarpley, and Justus Sheffield were never on the 40-man and in the minors, so their minor league salary is irrelevant for luxury tax purposes. Guys like Thairo Estrada and Albert Abreu are on the 40-man though, so their minor league salaries count against the luxury tax payroll. It’s not much, but every dollar counts.
The Yankees called up eight minor leaguers after rosters expanded on September 1st and several of them weren’t called up until mid-September. September call-ups have a relatively small impact on the luxury tax payroll. They count against it, for sure, but each call up equals less than $100,000 added to the bottom line. Those guys were never going to make or break the luxury tax plan.
5. The disabled list provides no relief. Jacoby Ellsbury’s salary didn’t go away for luxury tax purposes just because he’s injured and didn’t play. The Yankees are recouping some of his salary through insurance, though that doesn’t help the luxury tax situation. Players on the disabled list still count against the luxury tax payroll. It’s like they’re on the active roster. Ben Heller underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire season — he didn’t throw a single pitch during the regular season — yet his full salary counted against the luxury tax payroll. Such is life.
6. The Yankees accomplished their goal. The regular season is over and, with the exception of that $800,000 in outstanding possible bonuses, the luxury tax payroll is final. The Yankees are at $192.5M according to my estimate, which is well below the $197M threshold. Keep in mind this is only an estimate and not an official number. I was within $500,000 of the last reported number, however, so I’m feeling pretty good about things. The Yankees are under the threshold.
So what does that mean, exactly? It means their luxury tax rate has been reset. They’ve been taxed at the maximum 50% for years and years and years now. They won’t pay any luxury tax this year, and, if they go over the $206M luxury tax threshold next year, they will be taxed only 20% for every dollar over the threshold. There are also surtaxes for excessive spending:
$20M to $40M over threshold: 12% surtax
$40M+ over threshold (first time offenders): 42.5% surtax and first round pick moves back ten spots
$40M+ over threshold (repeat offenders): 45% surtax and first round pick moves back ten spots
Last season the Yankees paid $15.7M in luxury tax based on a $226.4M luxury tax payroll. The total payout was $242.1M. This year it is $192.5M. The Yankees went to Game Seven of the ALCS last year, raked in all that postseason revenue (six home dates), received their hefty portion of the league’s BAMTech sale to Disney this year, and slashed payroll nearly $50M. Seems unnecessary, but ownership’s gonna do what ownership’s gonna do.
If you have any questions about the luxury tax payroll, or if you notice an error, shoot me an email at RABmailbag (at) gmail (dot) com.
