hi new tennis fan here, do you mind explaining the 2011 fedal fallout? I tried looking around but couldn't find much. Thanks in advance!
Oh ho ho mutual, thanks for the question altho I fear this might get too complicated too political too quickly hahaha I'll try to keep my answer neutral. Tennis politics is an underworld of nasty nasty business and as much as it is fascinating, it is unfortunately very different from the clean, elegant, prestigious look the sport is presented as at front, as is expected when big prize money is on the line. This is going to be quite long, as usual, so be prepared hahaha
There's a good NYT article about this whole Nadal-Federer-Djokovic council debacle which I highly reccommend (around their 2019 return to the council), but let me provide a bit of a back story to that as well.
Now this all started back in the early 2010s, Federer and Nadal were still world number 1 and 2 (oh the good old days), and they were also the leaders at the players' council (Nadal was Federer's VP). So the gist of it by end of 2011, there was a bit of a dispute, esentially about prize money, but quickly turned into a bit of everything.
Basically, after the ATP finals of that year, there was talk of changing ATP into a 2 year ranking system. This is a bit unconventional but it's actually related to how points are accumulated throughout the whole tour and the accessibility of the sports to newcomers.
Everyone kinda knows that tennis is one of the most difficult sports to break into, not only because tournament seedings are based on rankings (unlike in football for instance where it's random), meaning top players will always have preference to go all the way to the final, but also because prize money has also been reported as highly unequal. Players at the top level like Serena, Federer, Sharapova, Nadal etc earned a gazillion times more than even the top 20 players, this is because of sponsorship, but also because of the gap in prize money. More reports have been coming out on this recently, where the top 5 players in India and other countries can't even sustain themselves with prize money alone and has to take up side jobs.
The idea is that with a 2 year ranking, points will be distributed more evenly, rankings will be much more accessible and players in the top 50 will have access to better prize money. It's a bit complicated to explain technically but that's the gist of it as far as I understand.
Now the problem starts when in November that year, the players meeting saw all players (including Nadal) except Federer, the president, support the 2 year system. They were also planning to boycott the Australian Open, that they deemed were far too unfair in terms of prize money distribution as all other Grand Slams.
The dispute between the two of them also has another layer into it however. Unsurprisignly, the ranking debate is related to discussions about scheduling, in which Nadal has been strongly advocating for change since the beginning of his career.
I managed to dig up some quotes on this, it's pretty nasty (hmu if you want sources):
“"For him, it's good to say nothing, (His attitude is) "Everything is positive. It's all well and good for me, I look like a gentleman,' and the rest can burn themselves. He likes the circuit. I like the circuit. It's better than many other sports, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't be better.”
Rafa and some other players are protesting about the number of mandatory events a pro player is required to compete in during the year, arguing this is not actually sustainable for an athlete's physical condition which he himself has felt the brunt too many times.
"I love the game and there are a lot of things I'm grateful for,” Nadal said. “The game has allowed me to lead a fantastic lifestyle. But to finish your career with pain all over your body, is that a positive? No. Maybe (Federer) has got a super body and he'll finish his career like a rose. Neither myself, nor (Andy) Murray, nor (Novak) Djokovic are going to finish our careers like a rose. Tennis is an important part of my life, but it's a tough sport. We're not like him, where it's effortless to play. For all of us, it's a battle."
I believe this is the period Federer was referring to when he said "He used to follow me around with everything but then he grew to be his own person," etc.
Federer and Nadal before this period were strangely civil towards each other, even after those French Open and Wimbledon finals back to back - but this seemed to be the beginning of their souring relations. Federer handled it very discretely and only said he had “no hard feelings” toward Nadal for the comments, and Nadal also later admitted that his comments “must stay in the locker room.”
I'm not saying one player is right and the other is wrong, there is always 2 sides of the coin. A 2 year ranking system will mess a lot of things up in terms of the sport's competitiveness and spectatorship, but there is also a real pay gap problem in tennis, especially in Grand Slams, it's a very top heavy sport. It's very evident that Nadal and Federer's frustrations with each other relate a lot to their different career trajectories and playing style. Nadal said many times from the beginning that his style of play is too physicaly disruptive and I remember him saying he'd be very surprised if he's still playing in his 30s and it's obvious that Federer's injury-free career bothered him a bit, while Federer, I think is always the perfect middle-man between the players and the tournament organisers (he has very good relationship with all of them), and he understood nuances of the sports' politics and that it's never that simple to change everything, something a lot of young players don't really get I think (Nadal is a bit more politically diplomatic nowadays).
The story of the 2019 council dispute is a bit more complicated, and it actually shows how much they've built bridges over their differences as this time it was more the case of Novak vs the two of them, quite literally haha. Nadal and Federer were no longer part of the council then. I think it started with the firing of the ATP chief executive, Chris Kermode (Djokovic was the president at that time I think). Nadal and Federer were very unhappy about this and that they weren't consulted on the decision.
Federer said: “I tried to meet Novak on the deadline; unfortunately, he had no time, That’s hard to understand for me.” Nadal, who met with Federer at that tournament to discuss tour business, also echoed his displeasure.
Very spicy, huh? This actually ended up bringing both Nadal and Federer back together into the council. Federer agreed to rejoin, and he talked about it with Nadal: "I would only do it if you were going too. And he said: I also only participate if you are there too."
See his cute full interview here:
The sweetest cherry on top is actually Andy Murray, bless his little heart (he is unsurprisingly quite uninvolved with the drama hahaha). He also left the council recently and actually was really happy Federer and Nadal the duo managed to get back together into the fray. “Despite the sport’s current success we live in chaotic times,” Murray wrote on Twitter. “My biggest achievement on the council may well prove to be being part of the group of resignations that presented the opportunity for this to happen. Good luck!!!”
Anyhow, there you go, a few thousand? words on tennis politics that you clearly did not ask for but hey! nothing better to start saturday morning than some spicy drama between the world's top athletes, eh?

I would like to clarify a point that I repeatedly made in the 12,000-word biography of Andy Zaltzman I wrote the other week, when I claimed he does not have comedic chemistry with any people who are not John Oliver. Andy Zaltzman can go back and forth with people quite happily, it just tends to be full of awkward pauses and buried in contrived economic analogies. If you don't mind that, the banter is, as they say, electric. For example, this from the Bugle livestream that just finished and was absolutely enormous fun.
Nish Kumar: Sometimes, people like me, who are [Narendra] Modi skeptics are described by BJP fans as HINOs. That’s an acronym meaning Hindu in Name Only. And I would describe them as Cultists Understanding Nothing Theological. What a pack of fucking Cultists Understanding Nothing Theological. Yeah, that’s right, [Producer] Chris, I found a way around you bleeping the word cunt! Andy Zaltzman: That’s why you are a Comedian of Unbelievable Natural Talent, Nish. Sorry, I must stop reading The Telegraph. Nish Kumar: You can’t get involved in acronym wars with Zaltzman, it’s like challenging Federer to tennis. It’s a fool’s errand. Andy Zaltzman: Well, you mention this striking inequality in India. And it’s not really for us, particularly white Brits, to judge how our former imperial – partners? Is that the term we’re using now? – but the economic choice India is making in this current era – it’s like when you meet a naked man, and you give him a thousand pounds to go away and smarten himself up. And he goes away, and he spends twenty pounds on quite a nice tie, and nine hundred and eighty pounds on a haircut. And he comes back looking quite pleased with himself. And sure, it’s a very nice tie, he could wear it to pretty much any social occasion. He could wear it to work, he could wear it to a job interview, he could probably wear it to family occasions. Fine, good tie, money well spent. And it is unquestionably the most sensational haircut you have ever seen. But, those are some conversationally-distracting testicles. So that’s how I would explain the Indian economy. Alice, did you vote in the Indian elections? Alice Fraser: First of all, I like the idea that there are any testicles that wouldn’t be conversationally distracting. The premise of your joke implies some bland, inoffensive testicles. [break for technical difficulties with Alice Fraser’s live linkup] Audience: Fuck you [Producer] Chris! Nish Kumar: While we are waiting, Andy – the bland, inoffensive testicles was the name of your and John’s first double act, wasn’t it?
They ended on a pun run, this one themed around historic world leaders, and that was a big one. It contained the line: “My mate got into antiques, he tried to make a living selling antiques. He bought this table, but the legs of the table were really rough, and he needed to smooth them off. So he went to the hardware store to buy something to smooth them off. But also, he needed something to go in his fireplace, in case he decided he didn’t like the table and he wanted to burn it. So he wrote down a shopping list for the hardware store, he wrote down: a leg sander, the grate [Alexander the Great].”
And that's it, that's the show. That's Andy Zaltzman humour, everyone. Laboured analogies about the economy, swearing via acronyms, an extended monologue chock-full of puns about historical figures (the Alexander the Great one was just one of many in the pun run), technological incompetence/general failures of slick production (to be fair the internet lag was not Andy's fault, but various other issues were), and every once in a while they still take a shot at John Oliver. That's the entirety of his repertoire summarized in one post, there was actually no need for me to write a 12,000-word biography. Everyone sure is going to have fun watching Taskmaster this fall!
Seriously though, I had so much fun watching that shambolic livestream, I so hope they do one again soon.

Happy Nice Ask Week!!! 💝
I know you're writing a sports au, but what are your favorite sports and have you ever been to see a game/match/competition?
Have a great weekend!
hi b!! happy nice ask week! thank you for the ask 💖
i think the only sport i genuinely follow is gymnastics, but tennis and cricket are two other huge ones that my family loves so i've just kinda absorbed knowledge about them over the years. i really like watching tennis, honestly. watching roger federer and serena williams retire last year was more emotional than i honestly thought it would be, but it really sunk in that i've been watching them play for so many years, i hadn't realized how emotionally attached i was lol. i live about an hour and a half from new york, so i've been to the us open a few times and that's been a lot of fun!
the cricket world cup is going on right now, and the indian team is doing pretty well (india's also hosting this year which is cool), so that's been fun to watch. they play new zealand tomorrow and i'm excited to watch that.
my brother and my dad have gone to see baseball and football games but idk those don't interest me at all lol

hi im Nathalie
The game of badminton originated in Siam, China over 2,000 years ago. It was brought to England in 1870 and was played somewhat like tennis. After being played in Canada, badminton arrived in America and has been popular since 1929. Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport, with bird speeds reaching 100 m.p.h.
Badminton has its origins in ancient civilizations in Asia and Europe with a game called battledore (bat or paddle) and shuttlecock. The name 'Badminton' comes from a stately home in Gloucestershire, England – home of the Duke of Beaufort.
The first badminton club in this country, the Badminton Club of New York, was formed in 1878 and became a weekend meeting place for New York's society leaders. Badminton's popularity boomed in the 1930's as educational institutions, YMCA's, and hundreds of newly formed clubs offered badminton instruction.
The shuttlecock is very light. Playing badminton is an excellent exercise for the body. It strengthens muscles, enhances reflexes and motor coordination, increases flexibility and improves balance. It helps with these things better than other sports because it uses every muscle in the body.
Badminton, court or lawn game played with lightweight rackets and a shuttlecock. Historically, the shuttlecock (also known as a “bird” or “birdie”) was a small cork hemisphere with 16 goose feathers attached and weighing about 0.17 ounce (5 grams). These types of shuttles may still be used in modern play, but shuttles made from synthetic materials are also allowed by the Badminton World Federation. The game is named for Badminton, the country estate of the dukes of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England, where it was first played about 1873. The roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China, and India, and it is closely related to the old children’s game battledore and shuttlecock. Badminton is derived directly from poona, which was played by British army officers stationed in India in the 1860s. The first unofficial all-England badminton championships for men were held in 1899, and the first badminton tournament for women was arranged the next year.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF; originally the International Badminton Federation), the world governing body of the sport, was formed in 1934. Badminton is also popular in Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Denmark. The BWF’s first world championships were held in 1977. A number of regional, national, and zonal badminton tournaments are held in several countries. The best-known of these is the All-England Championships.

[ad_1] How much is too much? It’s an age-old question that can apply to just about anything. Such as the bonhomie between Indian and Pakistani cricketers, which might appear a recent phenomenon but is most certainly not. India captain Rohit Sharma and Pakistan captain Babar Azam Sport, more than anything else, is replete with instances of fierce competitors not just co-existing peacefully but actually enjoying each other’s success. Nothing exemplifies this better than the relationship between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, two of tennis’ all-time greats. Despite being involved in several titanic battles for ultimate honours in the sport, the Swiss statesman and the respectful Spanish tyro have tremendous affection for each other. It might appear incongruous to parallel this with India-Pakistan because there is no political touch to the Federer-Nadal friendship. But just because political ties between the two neighbours are always fraught with tension and mistrust doesn’t mean the players should be daggers drawn. And just because they joke with each other and share cordial links doesn’t mean their competitive fire doesn’t burn bright, that the intensity of battle is any less. Such is the nature of social media that anything that is newsworthy, and some things that aren’t too, go viral in the blink of an eye. That’s why videos of Virat Kohli enquiring after Shaheen Shah Afridi’s injury or presenting a bat to Mohammad Amir are widely circulated and commented upon. Earlier this year, Kohli presented a signed t-shirt to Afghan Rashid Khan after an IPL match in Bengaluru at the latter’s insistence because he wanted to frame and hang it in his new Dubai residence. Perhaps the reason it didn’t make news is because Rashid is not Pakistani? Historically, no matter what hues the political equations between the teams have assumed, players from India and Pakistan have got along famously. The much-touted shared culture, shared language and shared eating habits brought them closer, particularly when they played in the county or league circuit in England. On India’s tour of Pakistan in 1989, when Mohammad Azharuddin was struggling for runs and confidence, Pakistani great Zaheer Abbas suggested a slight change in grip which resurrected the Indian’s career. More than a decade and a half later, Azhar returned the compliment with a phone call to Younis Khan in 2016; the Pakistani middle-order batter was in the middle of a horrendous run but turned things around after Azhar’s words of wisdom, uncorking a double hundred at The Oval and profusely thanking the former India captain publicly for his unsolicited inputs. Wasim Raja was a particular favourite with the Indian players of a different vintage, while Javed Miandad, the master of gamesmanship, was another hit despite his foul-mouthed tirades standing at silly-point. Pakistanis loved Virender Sehwag for his nonchalance and witticism, not to mention the songs he belted out with abandon while waiting for the ball to be delivered. In Multan in 2004, on his way to becoming India’s first Test triple-centurion, Sehwag had the Pakistani close-in cordon in stitches with a famous one-liner to Shoaib Akhtar. The fiery quick bowled a series of bouncers that Sehwag assiduously ignored. After each ball, Akhtar would ask Sehwag to play the pull shot. Sehwag reacted to Akhtar’s persistence with, ‘Bowling daal raha hai ya bheek maang raha hai?’ Suffice to say that it took a long, long time for the next ball to be bowled. This is not an apocryphal story, nor is the one where Miandad kept asking the prim and proper Indian left-arm spinner, Dilip Doshi, for his hotel room number during the Bengaluru Test in 1983. When Doshi finally lost his cool and asked him why, Miandad replied, ‘Ball udhar maarna chahta hoon’. India’s fielders had to try their utmost to stifle their guffaws for fear of inviting Doshi’s wrath. There have been flashpoints galore too, like there will be in the heat of battle, India-Pakistan or not. Aamer Sohail’s doomed showdown with Venkatesh Prasad in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal and the ugly exchange of expletives between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi spring to mind, but they were showdowns between competitors which had nothing to do with the countries of their origin. A little bit of needle and aggro on the field make for good ratings and can spice up an already edgy contest, but should Indian and Pakistani players be snarling and growling and snapping at each other simply because that is what others expect of them? Among others, Tendulkar has shown that it is possible to separate the personal from the professional; if it’s good enough for him, then… [ad_2] Source link

Why is water not allowed on planes?
In order to provide passengers and flight crew with safe drinking water, the US federal government implemented the Aircraft Drinking Water Rule. Why can't we bring water on a plane? The liquid ban was put in place after a group planned to blow up multiple flights with liquid explosives. Can you bring water on a plane? The second tip is to bring a reuseable water bottle. You cannot bring more than 3.4 ounces of H20 or any other liquids. You can bring an empty bottle, but there are some exceptions. You can fill it up on your way to the airport. What can you not drink on a plane? The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center at the City University of New York and DietDetective.com concluded that "NEVER drink any water on board that isn't in a sealed bottle."Don't drink coffee or tea on the plane. What can you not drink on a plane? The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center at the City University of New York and DietDetective.com concluded that "NEVER drink any water on board that isn't in a sealed bottle."Don't drink coffee or tea on the plane. Why water bottle is not allowed in flight? The officials of the Airports Authority of India were unaware that liquids over 100ml cannot be taken past security. An official said that half or one liter bottles are immediately taken away and thrown away. Can you take snacks on a plane? Solid food items can be carried in either your carry-on or checked baggage.Travelers can be told to separate their carry-on items from their carry-on bags if they want clear images on the X-ray machine. Should you chew gum on a plane? Don't chew gum to stop your ears from hurting. The travel doctor said that chewing makes us swallow more air.In turbulence or bumpy landings, it's also a choke-risk.You can sort your ears out more safely by wiggling your lower jaw and doing fake yawns. Why you should order a Bloody Mary on a flight? tomato juice tastes better in the air due to the noise level on an airplane, which influences a human's perception of taste, according to a 2016 study by a group of Cornell researchers published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. Why should you put a tennis ball in your suitcase?

Where to Buy Gold Jewelry
1) A brief history of Gold.
a. Gold jewelry has been valued by humans since before ancient Egypt rose to greatness. Since gold appears in nature in its native state at a high level of purity, early humans would find gold nuggets in streams or in other deposits. Gold flakes have been found inside caves where prehistoric drawings adorn the walls suggesting that early humans discovered gold and valued it for its aesthetic qualities. Gold is a very noble metal. This means that gold can easily be formed by striking it into shapes or plates which then can be carved or turned into coins. Alexander the Great is said to have funded his campaigns using gold that his troops mined along the way in his travels. Ancient Egyptians covered sarcophagus and other items with gold to praise their gods and pharaohs. Fast forward to modern times and we are using gold not only for jewelry and coins, but for electronics, surgical implants, and other uses which exploit gold’s heat and electrical conductivity.
2) Gold Sources, Purity and Measurement.
a. Gold can be found in almost every country throughout the world. Gold is either found in alluvial deposits which are caused by rivers exposing gold deposits or in mining operations where large quantities of earth are moved and processed to extract gold. Gold naturally occurs in purities of 85% or higher. Gold is heavier than other minerals found around it and therefore it is easy to separate using water sluices. Once gold is separated from the minerals which surround it, it is refined using either a chemical method in which gold is dissolved in a solution called aqua regia, which is a strong acid solution, or it is melted along with mercury which causes impurities to concentrate in a layer of the melted gold which is called slag. Once the slag is removed, gold has been refined to 100% pure.
b. Gold is a very easy metal to alloy. This means it can be combined with other metals to achieve production goals which would make a harder metal or a metal of a different color. For example gold is alloyed with copper to make rose gold and with tin and silver to make white gold. Aside from this gold is also dissolved in solutions to create electroplating applications. These applications allow gold to be plated onto wire and for other industrial purposes.
c. In jewelry gold purity is defined by Karat. 24 karat gold is defined as gold which has 24 out of 24 parts made of pure gold. Pure gold is very soft and seldom used for jewelry as it is easy to bend and wears and scratches way too quickly. 18 karat gold, or gold which has 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts of something else, is commonly used to make high end jewelry. 14 karat gold or gold that is 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts something else, is also used to make jewelry as it is harder and more durable than 18 karat gold. Gold is measured in Troy Ounces. The old question what weighs more an ounce of gold or an ounce of feathers is actually a trick question. Gold is measured in Troy Ounces and feathers in Avoirdupois Ounces. There are 31.1 grams in a Troy Ounce and 28.35 grams in an avoirdupois ounce. Therefore the Troy ounce, the ounce of gold, is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce. Conversely, the troy pound is lighter than the avoirdupois pound. Thus making the pound of feathers heavier than the pound of gold.
3) Gold Stamps and Identification.
a. The Federal Trade Commission regulates the trade of precious metals and directs manufacturers on how to stamp and identify gold. In the United States an item must be 10 Karat Gold or higher karat to be called gold. Also, gold that is plated must be plated with 10 karat gold or better to be called gold plated. Gold jewelry fineness is identified by a stamp which tell you how pure the gold used in the piece is. 417 or 41.7 percent gold is 10 karat gold. 585 or 58.5 percent gold is 14 karat gold. 750 or 75 percent gold is 18 karat gold. Normally a piece is either stamped with a three digit number or the actual karat content, such as 14K. Jewelry which is gold plated or gold filled is stamped with a GP or GF after the karat of the gold. For example 18 KGF, denoting that this piece of jewelry was manufactured using 18 Karat Gold Filled. Gold filled jewelry is jewelry manufactured using a solid layer of gold which has been mechanically bonded to a base material such as silver or a base metal like pewter. Gold plated (GP) is when an electroplating method is used to deposit a very thin layer of gold onto silver or a base metal.
Where to Buy Moissanite
If you are not yet familiar with Moissanite, it is a gem-quality silicon carbide that is frequently mistaken for a diamond due to its similar appearance. However, it is important to note that Moissanite is not a diamond simulant, but rather a superior alternative that boasts exceptional fire and brilliance. Its exceptional hardness also makes it an excellent choice for creating heirloom-quality jewelry, as it is highly resistant to scratches, chips, and breakage. Furthermore, our Moissanites are expertly cut and polished to a higher standard than the majority of diamonds commonly found in engagement rings.
What if a gemstone existed that surpassed the luster, brilliance, and fire of a diamond? Moissanite is just that gemstone. Originally discovered in a meteorite, Moissanite exhibits the same captivating beauty that is so highly prized in diamonds, but it outshines them with even greater sparkle. Moissanite rings not only rivals diamonds in terms of their aesthetic appeal and durability, it surpasses them. The mesmerizing beauty, exceptional durability, and affordability of Moissanite make it an ideal stone for any occasion. Find moissanite engagement rings today.
