Ok so I’ve avoided most middle names in my cataloguing but I’m manfully resisting the temptation to list Oscar Wilde with the full set
#I just think it's funny people forget he was originally from Ireland#And when I say people I mean the English#Especially the ones who were forced to read Wilde for university or whatever or refer to him as an icon but don't know much about him#I know he's incredibly important to the London literary scene and that informs a lot of his stuff#Like the sense of Englishness is very important I'm not dismissing that#And I'm told that he made the decision to drop the middle names himself which like good for him#But at the same time his parents didn't lumber the poor lad with the name Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde#for people to go around calling him English#It's also a really mellifluous phrase and I enjoy saying them#Alright Oscar I'll respect your wishes and not use them#There's already one Fenian name in there anyway with Oscar (Fenian in the mythological sense I'm not getting needlessly political)
