This year, the House Awards jurors have had their work cut out for them. There has been the largest number of entries in the accolade’s history (502!), from which to choose their shortlist!
‘The jury was impressed by the emphasis on place and space making, rather than architecture that is typologically or formally driven,’ explains Katelin Butler, 2019 juror and editorial director at Architecture Media, the publisher of Houses magazine. She is joined on the judging panel by industry legends: Rachel Nolan, principal, Kennedy Nolan; Luigi Rosselli, director, Luigi Roselli Architects; Lindy Atkin, co-director, Bark Architects; and John Choi, partner at Chrofi.
‘The standout homes are those that are connected with the people who live in them and consider how the spaces might influence the inhabitants’ experience of day-to-day life,’ adds Katelin. ‘Many of the shortlisted projects are acutely sensitive to site and context, are conceptually legible and display an honesty of material expression.’
The Awards celebrate excellence across nine categories – New House under/over 200 square metres, House Alteration and Addition under/over 200 square metres, Apartment or Unit, House in a Heritage Context, Sustainability, Garden or Landscape, and Emerging Architecture Practice – with one home crowned ‘Australian House of the Year’.
Winners will be announced at a gala on Friday, July 26th. Hover your cursor over the images for details on some of our favourite shortlisted projects. You can view the full 2019 shortlist at Housesawards.com.au.

HORADADA BOWLS CLUB BY IRENE GRAHAM Only one match to report on this week as we are now at the end of the winter season.  Win or lose the weather has been really kind to the Bowlers this winter with very few bad days.  The Falcons were at home to Emerald Isle Moonrakers and we were all very well aware that we had to produce the goods.  All but one of the rinks had really close results with the lead going back and forth a few times.  An exciting morning with the Falcons coming out on top.  We won on 3 rinks lost on 2 and it’s thanks to one of our rinks that secured us the overall shots.  Our winning rinks were: Irene Graham, Janet Jukes and Barry Evans 13 – 9 Wayne Jackson, Les Davies and Mick Kirby 23 – 8 Tracey Paffett, Ken Barber and Roy Thomson 17 – 14 The final score being 83 shot for to 66 against giving us 8 points to 4 against. Very well played to all of our team, we each played our part in helping the Falcons to move up a place to remain in division ‘B’.  We are equal in points to Quesada Rubies, but we just managed to pip them at the post on shots. The Royals with their last match result also moved 2 places up the table to finish in 7th place, only 1 point behind 6th.  We are a small membership club and to remain in the ‘B’ division for both the leagues is an excellent result for us. Again very well played to everyone who has played throughout the winter season and a special thanks goes to our Team Captain Peter Davis and Vice Captain Ron Odell for their efforts in putting a team together.  We know it is not an easy task. Have a restful 2 weeks break Team Horadada and we will start all over again for the summer leagues.  Keep em’ bowls a rollin’. LA MARINA REPORT BY BARRY LATHAM
Here we go then last month of the Summer Leagues.  Everything to play for, the Pilots to win their league and in the VCL, La Marina not to get relegated.   Best of luck to both. We did alright in the VCL getting six points off a very strong San Luis Falcons side remembering they won the league last year. Three wins each but the Falcons got the overall shots for the extra two points.  Our winners were in the Ladies Singles with Janet Parsons winning 21-6, in the rinks Dave O’Sullivan, Garth Slater, Tom Spencer and Dave Hadaway had a 18-11 win and very excitingly Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith, Jean Perchard and Terry Perchard won on the very last end by three.
Looking at the score sheet it could have been so easily 12-2 to the Pilots as two of our rinks only lost by one shot.  Instead we beat Monte Mar Torre 8-6 away from home. So well done to all to keep us up towards the top. Jean Tregoing, Rob and Margaret Finlayson won21-16 with Garth Slater, Carol Smith and Dave Taylor getting two more points winning 21 -14.  While Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith and Tom Spencer came up trumps with a 17-14 win.
Usually at this time of the year folk are thinking about moving clubs or people are about to move out here for a better life in Spain.  If you are one of those people why not come and join us at La Marina, friendly, happy club with a good social life out of bowls.  Great for new bowlers as we provide coaching.   If you are interested give our Captain Steve Hindle a call on 966184360.
