Warning to all apartment hunters, express extreme caution when looking for a place to rent. Recently there has been an increase in reported rental scams. Kijiji is where most of the people get scammed according to Guelph & District Association of Realtors (GDAR). However, there are other online directories where these people place ads. Watch out for any property that looks great and is being offered for rent at a low price. A red flag is if the landlord says “I’m out of town right now.” and wants a deposit. Do some cross-checking before giving someone your money. Meet the landlord in person, take a tour of the property, and talk to a realtor. Many times realtor may have or know of properties for lease.
