What Happened To Avis Mooney?
Tumblr media
Avis Beatrice Mooney was born on October 26th, 1927. She was white with brown hair, brown eyes, was 5'3", and 140 pounds. When she went missing, she was 33 years old. One source states that she had a scar on her abdomen and a birthmark about quarter sized and dark brown on her hip. She is reported to have suffered from an undiagnosed mental condition, potentially being bipolar disorder. Another source states that Avis may have had a hysterectomy and/or appendectomy scars.
The last time she was seen was on September 1st, 1961, in Mabank, Texas.  There is very little known about her case and what caused her disappearance. On the Texas DPS website, it states that her case is considered endangered, with foul play possible.
It should be pointed out, before we go any further, that Avis went missing from a town that is located in the northern part of Texas.
Tumblr media
According to her profile on the Charley Project, it's stated that Avis' husband had told their two children that he had come home and found a note from her, saying that she was leaving him. Apparently, there had been marital problems between the two, of which they fought frequently, including physically. Avis had left her husband before, to which her family didn't question her husband's story at first.
Tumblr media
Avis' family hadn't heard from her since the time she had disappeared, then her mother got a letter from her. Avis' mother wasn't sure whether it was actually written by her daughter and felt like the handwriting in the note resembled Avis' husband's, as opposed to Avis herself.
There was a possible sighting of Avis in Hughes Springs, Texas in the early 70's, though it had not been confirmed.
There is a drawn age progression of what Avis may have looked like in her old age.
Tumblr media
Despite there being a thread for her on websleuths, there isn't any extra information to extract from there. The case as a whole is scant, with very little information.
There have been 10 comparisons to her case, all excluded. None have compared Avis' DNA to that of a DOE from Texas.
There is a profile for her on find a grave, created in 2020. There is no new information for her, nor any family members linked.
As a whole, there is very little known about this case, or what background that Avis had. Though she had children, it is unknown what their names were, or even the name of her husband. Through some research with ancestry.com and family search, it seems that Avis' husband was named Marion Howard Mooney. Her maiden name was Harris.
Marion Howard Mooney was born on March 14th, 1926 in Archer, Texas. His parents were Robert Elmer Mooney, and Ora Mae Gallaway. Robert Elmer Mooney died on July 30th, 1969 at the age of 69, from arteriosclerosis. He was buried at Judson Cemetery in Cayuga, Texas.
Marion Mooney's mother was named Ora Mae Gallaway. She was born on February 13th, 1901 in Tennessee Colony, Texas. She passed away on November 30th, 1969, from generalized arteriosclerosis. She is also buried at Judson Cemetery.
Interestingly, the year before Avis Mooney went missing, her husband's sister, Agnes Ardelia Henson (Mooney ) passed away. Her death certificate stated that she passed away from breast cancer (of which she had been dealing with for the past year), that had metastasized in the past 6 months. She was 36 years old. Agnes was buried at Buffalo Cemetery, in Buffalo, Texas. Her husband, Willie, passed away in 1971 at the age of 58. The couple had at least one child, Robert Charles Henson, who passed away on July 9th, 1986. He was 44 years old. It is unknown how he died.
Marion Mooney was drafted into the military on March 14th, 1944, of which he served in the US Navy. He was an SC2 and served in WWII. At some unknown point in time, he married Avis Beatrice Harris. The couple had a son together, on August 2nd, 1950 who they named William Ralph Mooney. Five years later, they had a daughter, on August 21st, 1955, who they named Laura Ann Mooney. Six years later, Avis would disappear forever.
Despite there being an entry for a 'Bonnie Irene Mooney' on family search, there is no information provided to this person's birth or death date. I have my doubts as to if this person was really a child to Marion.
On August 10th, 1974, Marion Mooney remarried to a Betty J Mclauchlin. This is the person linked to Marion's find a grave profile. Both were each others' second spouses, staying together up until Marion's death in 1999. Betty Jane passed away on November 26th, 2008. Her find a grave profile says 2006, though her headstone states 2008.
Tumblr media
In 2014, Marion and Avis' son, William passed away.

Since there were no unidentified bodies from the state of Texas compared to Avis' DNA, I looked on namus to see if there were any potential matches.
The oldest Jane Doe that appeared was a woman who was found on January 1st, 1967 in Pearland, Texas. There is very little information to go on with this case, since the only details listed are that she was white, and only had partial skeletal remains found. I am unsure if this could be a potential match, since Avis was from the Dallas area, and Pearland is south of Houston. A huge difference in geography.
Tumblr media
The second oldest Jane Doe is a woman that was found on September 14th, 1968, in Houston, Texas. While the location is different from where Avis resided, this Jane Doe has more information that *could* make her a potential match.  Jane was estimated to have been 30-50 years old, and 5'4". If we remember from earlier, Avis was 5'3. Jane's body was recovered from a drainage ditch, as only her skeletal remains.
Tumblr media
A third Jane Doe was found on July 19th, 1976 in Colorado County, Texas. She is estimated to have been 27-43 years old, white, 5'2", with brown hair. Jane's skeletal remains were found, which were wearing gray flannel pants, a pink chiffon blouse, a size 13 shirt with "Sears Jr. Bazaar" as the label, a bra, underwear, and 1 lace up sandal. Once again, the location is far from where Avis lived near Dallas, but the details were interesting to me nonetheless.

What do you think happened to Avis? There is very little to go off of without more background story as to what kind of person Avis was. I personally have my doubts as to whether she had a mental illness or not, not because I don't believe in them (which I do), but she disappeared during a time period where mental health was greatly stigmatized. I wonder if this part of story is just to cover up something we don't know.
I find it interesting that there was the claim Avis was spotted in Hughes Springs, which was not far from where she lived in Mabank. Technically, it could have been possible she was close by due to the proximity of the towns, but this is more than likely a rumor to thwart any suspicion on her husband.
Tumblr media
I find her husband to be quite suspicious, especially since the letter that Avis "wrote" to her mother looked like Marion's handwriting. Even though Marion's surrounding family died of health issues (of which his parents passed away after Avis disappeared), I still can't help but feel it weird, that Marion's older sister passed away, Avis went missing, and then his parents died, all in the same decade.
Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever know what really happened to Avis. I have my suspicions that he killed her, especially since there aren't any comparisons to her case with Jane Does from the state of Texas, where she went missing.

Tumblr media
Today let’s talk about Hockey Twitter. Trigger warning for slurs and harrasment. I tried to circle back to what happened with Canucks Twitter this week. It’s a pretty long post, so thank you for bearing with me.
Avi Goldberg’s Hockey Twitter: At times toxic, misogynistic, and cruel, how can we make it better? was published in 2015. And yet, it was still painfully relevant in 2020.
In the article, he features Robyn Flynn, producer/broadcaster at CJAD800. Flynn “describes how even well-known and respected younger media personalities can express harmful ideas without even realizing they’re doing it.”
"I’m a huge Puck Daddy fan, I read it religiously," Flynn said. "But, Greg Wyshynski, a while back, said he wouldn’t be able to listen to a hockey game if it was called by a woman. He couldn’t grasp how that was a sexist thing to say. What, you can discount every single woman because the voice is a little more high pitched? He legitimately saw no issue with this statement."
In a recent twitter thread, Flynn recalled constant harassment she received from male hockey fans on Twitter.
I’ve never received more rape threats or death threats than when I worked in sports radio. Basically, if you decide to work in sports media as a woman, you will be hated. You will be harassed. You will be threatened. You will be called a slut, a whore, a cunt, a dyke. Every name in the book.
I just love sports, man. I wanted to cover hockey and talk about it on the radio. My childhood dream was to be a play-by-play announcer for the Habs. But people only cared if I was hot, or whether I’d seen any of the players naked.
I don’t blame women for not wanting to get into sports media. The odds are NOT in our favour. But there are still PLENTY of talented & qualified women out there, getting passed over for loud mouthed dude bros. It’s a damn shame.
So how can we make it better?
Goldberg talks about the importance of speaking up, featuring hockey blogger Toni McIntyre’s story.
McIntyre explains how publicly expressing her concerns, even if it's not resulting in immediate change, is motivated by the desire to make hockey Twitter a more inclusive space.
“I’d like to see hockey a more welcoming place. That’s the goal of speaking up, I want to dismantle the system that tells people like Mooney and Lepore they can do what they want and get away with it. It shouldn’t be ok. I prefer speaking up. If it helps someone not feel so alone in the hockey community, that’s part of the goal met.”
That’s why we are so lucky to have @broadscastpod. They truly carved out a safe space for women’s voices in the Vancouver market.
I hate to see the movement of improving inclusion falls only onto the shoulders of the marginalized. In my opinion, the male-dominated sports media is part of the problem.
There’s a phrase called “the medium is the message” describes the media’s ability to subtly alter how people act and interact. When you had Don Cherry spewing anti-gay and misogynist remarks for decades, when Mike Milbury so casually saying “Not even any women here to disrupt…your concentration” on air, when the podcast hosts refer to women as “kills” (oh they stopped saying kills now but they’ll say whatever the fuck they want)... Imagine people absorbing those content growing up, the sexualization and marginalization of women have been so deeply ingrained into the culture that it became socially acceptable.
You ask me why we feel disappointed when NHL stars frequent a podcast like Spittin’ Chiclets? Those people have the star power, the “must-listen” effect. I can imagine how many people don’t support Spittin’ Chiclets, but secretly thinking “but I’m *really* curious about what he has to say about drunk wrestling in the hotel.”
So, we shoudn’t listen to Spittin’ Chiclets at all? Well, if everyone can consume it critically, no problem. People can even write a paper out of it to examine its impact on the hockey culture. The sad truth is those loud mouthed dude bros haven’t developed that mindset yet. They defend misogynic remark as satire and humor, or even not realizing it’s hurtful for women. They celebrate the content, keep it popular, and harass people who expressed concerns. The cycle is vicious.
Just my two cents about the shitshow on Canucks Twitter this week: The Broadscast took a ton of heat when the co-host Dani expressed her strong reaction for EP’s appearance on Spittin’ Chiclets. I hope today’s piece can inspire people to think about what’s the problem and what exactly we can do to make “Hockey is for everyone.”

Captain My Captain et Weichong Marwing
Ils sont Its My Party et Newsman.
Charles My Boy a accompli de jolis progrès.

Miami Beach board backs plan to convert Prince Michael condos to hotel
From left: Postcard of 2618 Collins Avenue circa 1950, rendering of plans for 2618 Collins Avenue
Plans to turn the Prince Michael Condominium into the Prince Michael Hotel got a boost on Tuesday after the Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board approved the renovation of the 67-year-old MiMo-era building.
Eli Dadon, Richard Waserstein, and Avi Dishi want to renovate and convert the rundown 90-unit condo at 2618 Collins Avenue into an 89-room boutique hotel. Dadon said he and his partners plan to invest $30 million into the property.
The building is within the Collins Waterfront Historic District, which was set up in 2001 to help protect Art Deco and MiMo structures, so any alterations require historic preservation board approval.
The investors paid about $10 million to buy Prince Michael units between December 2014 and December 2017, or an average of $100,000 a unit at the building that is less than 300 feet from the beach, Dadon said.
“The main idea is to create a high-end boutique hotel and restore the property,” said Dadon, a partner at Adar Investments and Management, a Sunny Isles Beach-based company that specializes in investing in distressed properties. When the renovations are complete, Dadon hopes to charge guests between $300 and $500 a night.
Renovations will include creating a rooftop addition on top of a three-story building that will include an enclosed bar and a pool. The developers plan to restore the original lobby with decorative columns, terrazzo flooring, and a stone clad wall, and add a ground-level restaurant.
Built in 1951 by famed Art Deco hotel architect Roy France, the Prince Michael originally had 22 hotel rooms and 33 apartments. During the 1980s, the rooms were illegally subdivided, creating 88 units. The additional units were finally legalized in 1989, according to a report from Miami Beach Planning Director Tom Mooney. Then, in 1996, the lobby was transformed into two more residential units.
Half a dozen residents who live near Prince Michael Condominium told the board they had mixed feelings about the project. On the one hand, they were eager to see the Prince Michael Condominium fixed up. Consuelo Brown, a resident of Lake Beach Club Condominium just south of Prince Michael, said the Prince Michael Condominium is now filled with transient residents, trash, and vermin. “For the past 10 years the place is very noisy,” she said. “The police are always there.”
However, Brown and other neighbors who attended the meeting feared that a boutique hotel with a rooftop bar would generate even more noise.
To alleviate those fears, the developers’ attorney, Michael Larkin, said the hours for the roof-deck bar would be restricted to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Landscape architect Vincent Filigenzi added that the vegetation he planned to surround the building will include trees up to 30 feet tall that will muffle any sound emanating from the hotel. Brown said she also wants the four-foot wall that separates her building from the Prince Michael to be replaced by a taller, soundproof wall.
Ricardo Piedra, president of the Capomar Condominium just north of the Prince Michael, said he doesn’t think the building should be a hotel. “It has residential multifamily zoning,” he said. At the very least, Piedra said there shouldn’t be a roof-top deck and bar.
Piedra and Brown both said they may appeal the board’s decision. If so, a special master employed by the city of Miami Beach will have final say on the Prince Michael renovation project.
But HPB member Nancy Liebman, a former Miami Beach city commissioner, said the proposed hotel is much better than what’s there now. “This is doing something new and fresh with that neighborhood,” she said.
