As a human with little more than an English degree to their name, it is endlessly hysterical to me when people try to quote Frankenstein like:
"I have love in me the likes of which-"
Bitch, that is Robert De Niro, nice try.

Japanese Linguistic Observations in Spy x Family - part 1
This is a post series I've been planning for a while and I've finally had the time to complete part 1! 😃 I may have mentioned here before that I got my B.A. in Japanese/East Asian Studies, and even though I'm not fluent, I know the linguistics of the language fairly well. So I thought it would be fun to examine the interesting aspects of the Japanese version of the SxF manga that aren't reflected in the English translation. It might also be an informative experience for those who don't know any Japanese to learn a bit about the language through SxF! I'll try not to get too technical with the linguistics and keep my explanations at a beginner's level.
-----
Part 1 - Twilight's "honne and tatemae"
One of the main themes in SxF is how many of the characters have secrets they want to hide, so they act a certain way in front of others in order to mask their true selves. Japanese has a word for this phenomena called 本音と建前 ("honne and tatemae").
Tumblr media
I remember learning about the concept of "honne and tatemae" during my Japanese college studies – a quick google search will yield a lot of publications on the topic and its relation to Japanese culture in particular. While the idea of hiding one's true intentions behind a fake facade can exist anywhere and is not something unique to Japan, it is enough of an occurrence in Japanese culture that there are specific words for it. The Wiki article has a basic but good definition of honne and tatemae, to quote:
A person's honne may be contrary to what is expected by society or what is required according to one's position and circumstances, and they are often kept hidden, except with one's closest friends. Tatemae is what is expected by society and required according to one's position and circumstances, and these may or may not match one's honne. In many cases, tatemae leads to outright telling of lies in order to avoid exposing the true inward feelings.
Sounds very much like the characters in SxF, doesn't it? Twilight especially, because unlike other characters like Yor and Anya, who simply have secrets they need to keep but don't create fake personas for themselves, Twilight does – the cheerful, friendly Loid Forger is a different person from the cold, calculating Twilight after all. Also unlike Yor and Anya, who speak the same way consistently no matter who they're talking to, Twilight uses different speech levels depending on which persona he's using and who he's talking to.
Tumblr media
There are many different levels of speech in Japanese, ranging from super formal to totally crude. These speech levels are distinguished mostly by the pronouns the speaker chooses to use for themselves and who they're speaking to, as well as how they choose to conjugate the words they use. For example, 座ってください (suwatte kudasai), 座って (suwatte,) and 座れ (suware) all mean "sit," as in, telling someone to sit down. But the tone being conveyed is different: the first one is polite, the second one is casual, and the last one could be seen as rude if you're not using it with a close friend/family member.
As Twilight, he uses casual speech with the masculine and less polite pronoun 俺 or オレ (ore). This is the speech he uses when talking to a fellow spy like Fiona, and for his own inner thoughts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Loid Forger, he uses the polite 敬語 (keigo) speech, which is basically comprised of using the -ます (-masu) conjugation for verbs and the "to be" verb です (desu). He also uses the pronoun ボク or 僕 (boku), which is the standard male pronoun and more polite than "ore." He uses keigo to address pretty much everyone who doesn't know his true identity. When talking to a higher-up like Sylvia, he'll still use "ore" but will use polite speech instead of casual speech.
Tumblr media
Anya is an exception to this: with her, he uses his most casual speech, the same as he uses with Franky.
Tumblr media
I discussed a bit about this in part 24 of my Twiyor analysis posts, but this could be because Anya is a little kid, so he doesn't feel the need to put on any airs with her (same with Bond, whom he also uses casual speech with).
An interesting side note is that, as a child, Twilight used the pronoun "boku" but then changed to "ore" as soon as he became an adult/soldier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another aspect of keigo, besides using the more polite forms of pronouns and verb conjugations, is putting the honorific さん (san) after people's names. Twilight does this all the time with Yor, as she does with him. However, he switches to casual speech and drops the "san" part in her name when addressing her in front of people who (supposedly) believe they're a real married couple, such as Yuri and Fiona – because it would be weird for a real couple who have been married for a year to address each other in such a formal way, especially the husband. In the below panel when Fiona visits them, he's calling her "Yor" instead of "Yor-san" and using casual speech instead of keigo.
Tumblr media
Oddly in these situations, while he uses just "Yor" when addressing her directly, he still calls her "Yor-san" when talking about her. During Yuri's first visit for example, he calls her "Yor-san" when telling Yuri how much Anya loves her (talking to someone about her) but then calls her just "Yor" a few moments later when telling her that he'll clean up the spill (talking to her directly). It's strange to me that he wouldn't just consistently use "Yor" whether he's talking to her or about her in these situations...I'm honestly not sure if he does this intentionally or if he just slips up since he's so used to using "Yor-san" in her presence.
*UPDATE* Thank you to @dentedintheworld-blog for enlightening me with the below reply about this!
"In Japanese, when speaking to your spouse's family about your spouse, you address her/him by attaching "san" her/his name out of respect for her/his family. This is also to show her/his family that you respect your spouse. That's why Loid calls Yor with san when he talks about how much he loves Yor to Yuri."
That definitely makes sense for why Twilight switches between "Yor" and "Yor-san" in these situations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Regardless, this is why the scene in chapter 86 is so significant – when Yor isn't present, there's no reason for him to refer to her as "Yor-san," especially in front of a fellow spy like Fiona who knows he (supposedly) shouldn't have any feelings for her. Yet, even after he just called Yuri by his full name "Yuri Briar" a moment before, he doesn't do the same for Yor and continues to call her "Yor-san" here, much to Fiona's dismay.
Tumblr media
In the same chapter, it's also significant that he uses "ore" when addressing Yor directly in his thoughts. Even though he's not speaking out loud, I believe this is the first time he's speaking directly "to" her as Twilight and/or his true self and not as Loid Forger.
Tumblr media
But despite all this, I think that both Loid Forger and Twilight are tatemae…they're both masks to hide the person he truly is. The person who fondly talked about his mother to Yor on the park bench, the person who genuinely expressed gratitude for her sacrifice when leaving the resort island, the person who refused to kill Yuri in a life-or-death struggle because he knew it would hurt her…that's his actual honne. But of course, the ongoing conflict of the series is that he has yet to realize this. He won't even show his honne to his closest friend, Franky. Seems like it mostly comes out in dribs and drabs during his interactions with Yor...no surprise there, lol. The man is certainly a work in progress. When he finally starts letting his "honne" show, I'm curious what form of speech he'll adopt.

Tumblr media
The bright sun softly shone through the multicolored foliage. As the early autumn breeze whisked by, the fallen leaves twirled over the road as a car whizzed by. The temperature was finally cool enough for you to pull out your collection of sweaters, and you smiled as you made your way to the coffee shop.
While you were new to the city, the workers there had already begun to memorize your order: English breakfast tea with a splash of milk. You moved here around a month ago, still during the summer.
In the past few weeks, you had plenty of time to spruce up your new apartment, with little knickknacks throughout the rooms, a reflection of your personality, as opposed to the plain, empty box you had first moved into. Not only did you have enough time to prepare your classroom, but also to explore and familiarize yourself with the city. That was the plus side of being a teacher: your summers were almost entirely free.
Upon opening the door to the store, the scent of coffee and an array of syrupy flavorings greeted you. After placing your order, you began to make your way to the front of the store, hoping to grab a seat while you waited. If you didn’t have to arrive at school in approximately thirty minutes, you would grab a seat right by the window (where you likely would’ve taken a long nap).
While daydreaming about the comfy window seat, you were too busy to notice the large frame walking right towards you.
By the time your head turned back to the direction of the counter, you had walked right into the man, who coincidentally seemed just as distracted as you were.
As you crashed into each other, both of your bags fell in the collision, spilling their contents all over the coffee shop floor.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry,” you apologized as the two of you rushed to pick up the mess on the ground. The man in front of you tucked his hair behind his ear as you both stood up, realizing he was quite tall. He was the most attractive man you had seen since arriving in the city.
He had a soft smile on his face as he replied, “No, no, I should’ve been paying attention. I was too focused on my phone.”
“Work?”
“Yeah,” he let out a small laugh. Eyeing the lanyard sticking out of your bag, he asked, “You teach?”
“Yeah, I started at a new high school about a month ago,” You told him.
“High school? How’s that? Most people are trying to get out of there. I know I was,” he told you, making you laugh.
“Honestly, I couldn’t wait to graduate high school, but after working with kids in the summers between and after college, I realized I loved working with them. Plus, that was the most appealing job to me as a Sociology major; the legal field wasn’t exactly my thing,” you revealed to him.
“You have a B.A. in Sociology? So do I.”
“Huh, that’s neat.”
“Yeah, I also have Ph. Ds in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering and a B.A. in psychology,” he rattled off his degrees as if they were items on a grocery store list. You stared at him in shock.
“Really?” He nodded in reply. “How old are you? Is that even possible?”
He opened his mouth to say something else as a barista called a name and an order from behind the counter, the first half of which you didn't quite catch: “Large black coffee, no cream or sugar!”
“Sorry, that’s me,” he walked over to grab his steaming drink, making his way over to the counter perpendicular to the order line, which had an array of napkins, utensils, and sugar packets. Your order was called shortly after, and you went over to the counter. You watched as Spencer poured packet after packet of sugar into his drink. It wasn’t until probably the sixth one that he finally stopped reaching for the dwindling bowl of sugar packets.
Walking over to him with your drink in hand, you joked, “Sure you put enough sugar in there?”
He let out a laugh as he put the lid back onto the cup.
“Interestingly, recent research suggests that the addition of sugar in coffee not only masks the bitterness of the drink but actually changes the molecular structure of the coffee,” he stated proudly.
“I’m sure enough sugar to make a small child fall ill wasn’t what those researchers had in mind,” you jested.
A loud ringtone interrupted your conversation as Spencer moved to answer the phone call.
“Hey, Garcia,” he paused. “Yeah, I’m on my way.”
“I, uh, I have to go, but it was nice meeting you,” he said, turning back to you. He began making his way towards the coffee shop's door. Just before he exited, he turned back to you to say, “Sorry again for running into you!”
You stared as he jogged down the street, wondering if what just happened was real.
౨ৎ
Slumping in your chair, you finally let out a sigh of relief. While you loved your job and the kids were great, some days it felt like your first day on the job all over again. As you sat in silence, taking in the morning's events, your stomach gurgled, prompting you to reach for your bag. Instead of rifling through it, you decided emptying the contents on your otherwise neat desk would be easier.
Once you found your lunch, you set it aside and put the items strewn across your desk back into your bag. However, as you moved to put your book into the bag, you realized that it was unfamiliar to you. Apparently, an unintended book exchange had occurred.
The cover of The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury stared back at you from your desk.
You realized you had no way of contacting him, as you two had barely swapped names, never mind phone numbers. You thought about returning to the coffee shop: maybe he had also realized the mistake and would return there. Regardless, you weren’t complaining about another excuse to return to the store to grab your go-to drink (and maybe a pastry, too, this time).
You reached for an extra copy of Cat's Cradle on the shelf behind you. Today you would just have to do without your notes and annotations.
౨ৎ
The B.A.U. had just wrapped up their most recent case in Santa Monica, California. After the discovery of three indistinguishably burnt bodies by the pier, the local police department called them in. It turned out that an ex-fireman was their unsub, believing that the homeless population of Santa Monica was plagued and had to be exterminated—the trigger for this being his tuberculosis diagnosis following his rescue of several homeless people from a fire. The team was finally able to relax after the case had closed.
Everyone was getting some much-needed rest while the jet was returning to Quantico. Hotch and Rossi were sitting towards the front of the plane, Emily was asleep, J.J. was grabbing a hot cup of coffee, and Morgan and Reid were seated across each other towards the back of the jet. Reid reached for his copy of The Illustrated Man but pulled out a copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle instead. His brows furrowed in confusion.
“What’s wrong? Are the scientific inaccuracies of ice-nine too hard to ignore?” Morgan jested.
“No- well, while ice-nine isn’t real, there’s a similar phenomenon that occurs on the ocean floor; it’s called the ‘Icicle of Death’; when polar sea ice forms, the separated brine sinks and freezes the water around it. Once it reaches the ocean floor, it spreads and forms an ice sheet, freezing and killing any organism that doesn’t evade its path. It’s quite neat,” Spencer prattled on as Morgan stared back at him.
“Reid- I mean, why did you look at the book like you didn’t bring it with you,” Morgan explained.
“Because I didn’t.” Morgan was now confused as well.
“What do you mean you didn’t? Who’s book is it then?” Morgan questioned him.
“I don’t know; I can’t find my copy of the Illustrated Man either; it’s weird I put it in here the morning we left and then-” Reid cut himself off, realizing when the mix-up must’ve occurred.
His cheeks turned a rosy pink as he remembered what had happened before work that day. After the initial embarrassment of the situation subsided, he finally got a good look at your face and realized how absolutely beautiful you were.
You wore a plum-colored sweater that complemented the large burgundy frames of your glasses, which now sat slightly farther down your nose as you continued to pick up the items on the coffee shop floor. You brushed the baby hairs on your forehead aside as you stood, now looking back at Spencer. The rays of sun coming through the window behind you made it appear as if you were glowing.
“Then what…?” Morgan snapped him out of his memory.
“It was nothing. I bumped into someone Monday morning, and we dropped our stuff. I guess we mixed up our books in the rush to get our stuff back in our bags,” Spencer tried to backtrack, not wanting to reveal who he had bumped into.
“Was this ‘someone’ in high school?” Morgan asked, trying to pry more information from Spencer.
All he got back was a confused, “What?”
“The last time I remember seeing Kurt Vonnegut was when people had to read it in High School. Plus, the back of that book has a High School's stamp on it,” Morgan added. Reid looked about, ready to jump off the jet in mid-air. “So spill. Is she a librarian or something?”
“Fine- we walked into each other at the coffee shop that Garcia goes to sometimes,” Spencer began to reveal. “We both dropped our stuff on the ground, and I saw her teacher's I.D. lanyard and asked about it. That’s all.”
“Doesn’t seem like that’s all,” Morgan pressed. “You get her number or anything?”
“What?” Reid’s face dropped.
“Well, clearly you were into her, even if you don’t want anyone to think that, so did you get her number or anything?”
“No… I didn’t think about that. Plus Garcia called us in for this case as we were talking,” Spencer sounded dejected. He realized he didn’t even know your name, never mind your phone number.
“Well, what was her name?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know? You didn’t even ask her for her name?”
“I was a little preoccupied, okay!” Spencer was about to switch seats on the jet. “Besides, she probably felt bad for bumping into each other.”
“Okay, whatever you say, pretty boy, but if I hear about a new girlfriend, I want five dollars,” Morgan joked.
“Whatever,” Spencer huffed, opting to open the book instead of continuing to talk to Morgan. He initially thought this was just another standard high school copy of the book, but he quickly realized you had several annotations throughout the book. Seeing as the novel was only around 300 pages long, he decided to read it and your annotations in the remaining length of the flight. As for getting the book back to you, he would just have to return to the coffee shop in hopes of running into you again (hopefully figuratively this time).
౨ৎ
The end of the work week had finally arrived, and you couldn’t be more elated. However, the weather did not seem to reflect this sentiment.
The past few days consisted of perfect fall weather: mild temperatures, partly sunny skies, and a cool breeze here and there. Yet, the weather took a drastic turn upon the arrival of the much-anticipated end of the week. The sky appeared to be dark gray and pouring frigid rain. It was only September, yet the temperature had plummeted to 58 degrees.
When you finally got into the cozy coffee shop and placed your order, you were relieved and finally given a break from the dreary weather. As you waited for your drink, you saw a familiar face dumping what appeared to be cupfuls of sugar into his coffee. The past few mornings, you had returned to the coffee shop each morning, book in hand, but Spencer was nowhere to be found.
Bringing your large cup of tea over to the counter, you began to speak. “You know, there has to be research telling you how bad that is.”
He turned towards you. “Yes, unfortunately, then it would be entirely ingestible.”
“Have you ever tried adding milk? Or drinking tea?”
He seemed perplexed as if he had not considered those options before.
“Anyways, where’ve you been? Haven’t seen you the past few days,” you told him, adding a spoonful of honey to your tea.
“Yeah, sorry, I was away for work,” he told you. He seemed genuinely apologetic.
“Well, I have something to give you,” he looked confused as you reached into your bag, pulling out his copy of The Illustrated Man from the depths of your bag. “Apparently, we swapped books the other day.”
“Oh, yeah! I left your copy of Cat’s Cradle back in my apartment, but I meant to return it to you,” he told you. “I mean, if you want, you can keep my book in the meantime if you haven’t read it- if you want to. It’s quite an interesting read: it’s about a man covered in tattoos drawn by a woman from the future, and at night, the tattoos come to life and tell a story. It’s pretty cool.”
“Yeah, I mean, I’ve read many of his other stories like Fahrenheit 451, The Veldt, and The Pedestrian, but I haven’t gotten around to that one,” you told him, taking the book back and placing it into your bag. “Thanks.”
Glancing at your watch, you realized you had to be on your way lest you wanted to be late for homeroom. Lord knows the chaos that would happen if you were even a minute. Half your class would probably be gone.
“Hey, I gotta go, but let me give you my phone number so we can figure out when to return each other's books,” you told him. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt to stay in touch with him. After all, this man was so handsome you wanted to pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming. However, he just stared at you. You weren’t sure if you said something wrong, so you began to backtrack, “Only if you want to, I mean. We don’t have to if that’s weird or anything, sorry-”
“No, no, that would be great,” You were glad he cut your ramble short. He pulled out his phone, and you quickly typed in your name and contact information.
“It was nice running into you again,” you told him, turning around to leave the coffee shop. Realizing you never asked for his name, you swiveled to face him again. “Wait, I still don’t know your name. It’s only fair that you tell me now that you know my name and my phone number.”
“It’s Spencer,” he told you, smiling.
“Spencer,” you tested it out. “Well, Spencer, I’ll see you soon.”
And with that, you were already out the door and heading down the street, leaving a smiling Spencer behind.

If I were to make an animation map of “What Do You Do with a B.A. in English / It Sucks to Be Me” from Avenue Q The Musical involving magic mountain.. would you be interested in joining? Just looking at that song and ignoring the implications if you look at other songs from the musical
I’m not sure if I’d go through with it but it’s been plaguing my mind.
So this is based off more of personalities rather than a specific event but I’ll explain myself for all of my choices!
Princeton - Scar : Very positive and rather clueless
Kate Monster - Gem : Passionate in what she’s talking about and just gives off girlboss. Smart and has a giant heart!
Brian - Joel : Laid off, broke, 32 year old man, who wanted to be on late night tv for comedy.
Rod - Impulse : The analytical prim and proper half
Nicky - Skizz : The loveable silly and lazy half
(Rod and Nicky enter the song fighting like 10 year olds, live together, “We’ve been the best of buddies ever since the day we met! So he knows lots of ways to make me really upset!” Etc, you get the point.)
Christmas Eve - Mumbo (I can’t explain this; she doesn’t fit anyone and the only person I have left is Mumbo. Her part might just be removed completely ngl 💀)
Gary Coleman - Grian : The superintendent (this man is a leader through and through) and got his poor mending books stolen from him 😔
Everything would be done through Google Drive. And I would organize and edit everything. 😼

📁 PROFILE OVERVIEW
Dr. Spencer Reid’s entrance into the BAU was unorthodox — recruited not for his field experience, but for his mind. At 24, he’s the second youngest active Supervisory Special Agent in Behavioral Analysis Unit history. He doesn’t command rooms. He watches them, quietly and thoroughly.
Academically unmatched and socially disoriented, Reid walks the line between genius and vulnerability. His memory is flawless; his instincts, fast but human. He rarely speaks emotionally — but when he does, it lingers.
Most agents lean on experience. Reid leans on patterns, empathy, and a mind that rarely sleeps. He doesn’t say much about what keeps him awake. He just keeps showing up.

⚠️ INTERNAL FLAGGING
— Prone to over-identification with victims, particularly younger or intellectually gifted individuals
— History of isolation and insomnia

Rilla of Ingleside - Chapter 1
I'm so excited for another round of book club, I cannot even tell you!!
Necessary backstory: in 7th grade, we had a round of show and tell in English class (not very common in my country). I could've taken absolutely anything, but I took my copy of Rilla of Ingleside because I have never been normal about this book.
I feel safe starting with this because we're all at the devil's sacrament here.
Okay, Glen notes, let's go!
The first time I read this book, I was 11. We hadn't hit the First War in history, so the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand meant as little to me then as it did to Susan. Suffice to say, I was Not Prepared for what was to follow.
I am in sympathy with transmasc Jack Frost.
Not LMM being all over the Orange Cat Lore that I see on the Internet TODAY. (Tbf, I've never dug into how far back it goes. Maybe there are ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs about orange cat shenanigans.)
I cannot imagine living in a place small enough where my return from college (not even graduation!) would make news in the local section of the paper.
"Wasn't Jem the dearest baby in the old House of Dreams? And now he's a B.A. and accused of courting." There's something so wistful but also so funny about this line. No one does this combo like LMM.
"She has no serious ideals at all—her sole aspiration seems to be to have a good time." Me, much to my father's lasting regret.
'Miller Douglas has decided not to go West. He says old P.E.I. is good enough for him and he will continue to farm for his aunt, Mrs. Alec Davis.' Girl?? This is in the NEWSPAPER??
I low-key wish our papers had local sections like this. I do not like talking to neighbours but I love hearing gossip about them. Don't tell me about celebrities on page 3. Tell me about who's back from college, who is moving for work, and what happened at sundry Diwali parties.

LOUISE JENKINS MERIWETHER
(May 8, 1923 – October 10, 2023)
Louise Jenkins Meriwether, a novelist, essayist, journalist, and social activist, was the only daughter of Marion Lloyd Jenkins and his wife, Julia. Meriwether was born May 8, 1923, in Haverstraw, New York, to parents from South Carolina.
After the 1929 stock market crash, Louise’s family migrated from Haverstraw to New York City. They moved to Brooklyn first and later to Harlem. The third of five children, Louise grew up during the Great Depression, a time that would deeply affect her young life and ultimately influence her as a writer.
Louise Jenkins attended Public School 81 in Harlem and graduated from Central Commercial High School in downtown Manhattan. In the 1950s, she received a B.A. in English from New York University before meeting and marrying Angelo Meriwether, a Los Angeles teacher. Although this marriage and later marriage to Earle Howe ended in divorce, Louise continued to use the Meriwether name. In 1965, Louise earned an M.A. in journalism from the University of California at Los Angeles. Her first book, Daddy Was a Number Runner, a fictional account of the economic devastation of Harlem in the Great Depression, appeared in 1970 as the first novel to emerge from the Watts Writers’ Workshop.
The circumstances surrounding this photo are largely unnatributed to larger context but some citation indicates that Jenkins-Merriwether was being questioned by police at a protest.

Eva Beatrice Dykes (13 August 1893 – 29 October 1986) was a prominent educator and the third black American woman to be awarded a PhD.
Dykes was born in Washington, D.C., on August 13, 1893, the daughter of Martha Ann (née Howard) and James Stanley Dykes. She attended M Street High School (later renamed Dunbar High School). She graduated summa cum laude from Howard University with a B.A. in 1914. While attending Howard University, where several family members had studied, Eva was initiated into the Alpha chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. At the end of her last semester she was awarded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated's first official scholarship. After a short stint of teaching at Walden University in Nashville, Tennessee, Dykes attended Radcliffe College graduating magna cum laude with a second B.A. in 1917 and a M.A in 1918. While at Radcliffe she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1920 Dykes began teaching at Dunbar High School, and in 1921 she received a PhD from Radcliffe (now a part of Harvard University). Her dissertation was titled “Pope and His influence in America from 1715 to 1815”, and explored the attitudes of Alexander Pope towards slavery and his influence on American writers. Dykes was the first black American woman to complete the requirements for a doctoral degree, however, because Radcliffe College held its graduation ceremonies later in the spring, she was the third to graduate, behind Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander (1921, University of Pennsylvania) and Georgiana R. Simpson (1921, University of Chicago).
After her graduation from Radcliffe in 1921, Dykes continued to teach at Dunbar High School until 1929 when she returned to Howard University as a member of the English Faculty. An excellent teacher, Dykes won a number of teaching awards during her 15 years of service at Howard University. Her publications include Readings from Negro Authors for Schools and Colleges co-authored with Lorenzo Dow Turner and Otelia Cromwell (1931) and The Negro in English Romantic Thought: Or a Study in Sympathy for the Oppressed (1942). In 1934 Dykes began writing a column in the Seventh-day Adventist periodical Message Magazine, this continued until 1984.
In 1920 Dykes joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and in 1944 she joined the faculty of the then small and unaccredited Seventh-day Adventist Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, as the Chair of the English Department. She was the first staff member at Oakwood to hold a doctoral qualification and was instrumental in assisting the college to gain accreditation. Dykes retired in 1968 but returned to Oakwood to teach in 1970 and continued until 1975. In 1973 the Oakwood College library was named in her honor and in 1980 she was made a Professor Emerita. In 1975 the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church presented Dykes with a Citation of Excellence honouring her for an outstanding contribution to Seventh-day Adventist education. Dykes died in Huntsville on October 29, 1986, at the age of 93.

Louise Jenkins Meriwether, a novelist, essayist, journalist and social activist, was the only daughter of Marion Lloyd Jenkins and his wife, Julia. Meriwether was born May 8, 1923 in Haverstraw, New York to parents who were from South Carolina where her father worked as a painter and a bricklayer and her mother worked as a domestic.
After the stock market crash of October 24, 1929, Louise’s family migrated from Haverstraw to New York City. They moved to Brooklyn first, and later to Harlem. The third of five children, Louise grew up in the decade of the Great Depression, a time that would deeply affect her young life and ultimately influence her as a writer.
Despite her family’s financial plight, Louise Jenkins attended Public School 81 in Harlem and graduated from Central Commercial High School in downtown Manhattan. In the 1950’s, she received a B.A. degree in English from New York University before meeting and marrying Angelo Meriwether, a Los Angeles teacher. Although this marriage and a later marriage to Earle Howe ended in divorce, Louise continues to use the Meriwether name. In 1965, Louise earned an M.A. degree in journalism from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Meriwether was hired by Universal Studios in the 1950’s to became the first black story analyst in Hollywood’s history. Beginning in the early 1960’s, Meriwether also wrote and published articles in the Los Angeles Sentinel on African Americans such as opera singer Grace Bumbry, Attorney Audrey Boswell, and Los Angeles jurist, Judge Vaino Spencer. In 1967, Meriwether joined the Watts Writers’ Workshop (a group created in response to the Watts Riot of 1965) and worked as a staff member of that project.
Her first book, Daddy Was a Number Runner, a fictional account of the economic devastation of Harlem in the Great Depression, appeared in 1970 as the first novel to emerge from the Watts Writers’ Workshop. It received favorable reviews from authors James Baldwin and Paule Marshall. Daddy Was a Number Runner, is a fictional account of the historical and sociological devastation of the economic Depression on Harlem residents.

ok im hooked. i need more streamer au lore
okay buckle up lol cuz i am boutta YAP. also for reference, these are their designs + “human” names, in descending order of age:
Tumblr media
Moon (Kamaria), Suns (Cyra), Sliver (Sylvia), Opportunity (Felicity)
Tumblr media
Indigo (no change), Wind (Chase), Sig (Sayani)
Tumblr media
PIn (Piper), Yui (no change), Light (Phoebe), Pebbles (Felix)
So the streamer au doesn’t really have a set “plot”, it’s more just taking the iterators’ personalities and dropping them into the human world and letting them loose LOL. ofc there are references to their stories in the game, ie. Pebbles having cancer as a child, piper being a parentified oldest sibling, etc.
Sig, Piper, and Yui are all streamers and e-sports players, and eventually Pebbles joins in on Sig’s streaming shenanigans, either joining in with Sig’s chaos or doing his own streams where he screen records himself drawing. Moon mods Sig’s chat and very occasionally joins streams. Piper does do gaming streams but also does talking streams/GRWM type stuff and prefers doing those if they’re honest, and posts edited versions of the streams to youtube. Yui is pretty much a strictly gaming channel, and but will make appearances in Sig’s streams as they have a bit of a silly rivalry. Sig does have a decently sized fan following that he interacts with pretty frequently. She has done streams where she goes into the goddamn ao3 tag for himself and reads fics LMAO.
Sig, Pebbles, Moon, and Suns all live together in an apartment, and Piper and Yui live together as well (and are fucking BESTIES I’ll gush about that later). Sig met pebbles when she was still attending university, but subsequently dropped out after 1 semester because the whole streaming thing blew up. Pebbles still attends and is getting his B.A in fine arts. Sig met Moon through Pebbles and well. Obv they fell in love aww and then all moved in together. Pebbles met Suns later, they work at the library on campus and are getting their master’s in library sciences. Moon actually has a Real Job™ as a nutritionist and has a whole ass phd. Suns moved in with them after a whole lotta pspspsps-ing from Sig and Pebbles LOL.
Chase is Sig’s childhood best friend, they lived in the same neighborhood and are only a couple months apart in age. He isn’t a streamer and Sig unfortunately moved away for college so they don’t see each other often, but are still very close and have a minecraft world together that they’ve had for like, 7 years.
Yui moved from Korea after doing a semester abroad, but she never really found something she was passionate enough about to pick a major and eventually dropped out. Streaming provides enough income that she only needs a part-time job to make enough to live but it certainly wasn’t the future her or her parents expected of her. She can come off as a bit of a bitch, joking that she’s a “mean lesbian”, but it’s mainly because she feels she constantly has to be on the offensive. Given that she is an immigrant (specifically asian), for whom english is a second language, as well as short, queer, and a woman in a male-dominated space rampant with misogyny (esports), it’s not really a surprise she developed the attitude she has. She has a drive to prove herself but never really feels like she has, though since meeting the others she has become a lot more confident and comfortable with what she’s achieved.
(TW for abuse for this next bit)
Piper met Yui randomly in a coffee shop that was hosting an open mic night, and struck up a conversation with her. To Yui, Piper was the confident, sure of themself, had-it-all-together type of person she wanted to be. In reality they were living out of their car after running away from an abusive home in a conservative town and really, really wanted a fucking friend. Their mom had passed away when they were really young, and being the eldest sibling of 4, they were saddled with the brunt of raising them while their father had to work to make ends meet. He was very strict and at times verbally abusive towards them, and certainly wasn’t going to accept Piper being any kind of queer, pushing masculinity onto them that made them feel completely trapped. The second they turned 18, they threw their shit in the trunk of their car, withdrew every cent from their bank account, and drove off, never looking back. They feel really guilty for leaving their siblings behind in such a toxic environment but are too afraid to reach out to them, as they don’t want anyone to know where they went. They changed their last name to their mother’s maiden name just as a precaution (and because they don’t want to be connected to their father in any way, shape, or form).
(end of TW)
They’re incredibly attached to their car (a dented up white BMW from the 2000s) because it was their escape and their home for quite a while. Yui is completely unaware of all of this until some jackass backs into Pip’s car and busts one of the back taillights, which Piper can’t afford to fix and it sends them into a panic. This is the first time Yui sees Piper break down, sees them cry, and even though she is NOT a touchy person, all she can do is throw her arms around them and hold them while everything just bursts out. She immediately tells them to move in with her (and will NOT take no for an answer), and that’s how they end up living together. Piper is the first person Yui really lets her walls down around after being so hyper-vigilant about her self-image for so long, and they’re incredibly close. Yui was actually the first person Piper ever told to use they/them for them when they introduced themself. They’ve both really helped one another find their place and purpose in the world.
On a MUCH less heavy note LMFAO, Pip’s favorite band is glass animals, they’re really interested in fashion, and lowkey (highkey) a stoner. They share their weed with Pebbles to help him with his chronic pain, and that’s partially how those two get close. Pebbles and Yui also help them learn how to do makeup, since obviously with their upbringing they never had a chance to learn how to do it.
Piper is introduced to Sig (and subsequently Pebbs/Moon/Suns) when they tag along to a competition with Yui. Pebbs and Pip are kinda immediately into each other, but Pebbles is still with his piece of shit boyfriend (we’ll get to that in a second) and the two end up in a kinda terrible on-again-off-again fuck buddies situation that Piper just accepts as “good enough”. I prommy it ends up in a cute healthy relationship eventually but those two gotta FIGHT for it.
Speaking of Pebbles, he’s Moon’s adopted brother, and their parents are doctors. They actually chose to adopt Pebbles because he was sick and they knew they could handle it (both financially and physically), so he’s brought up in a very positive environment and is comfortable enough to come out as trans pretty early in his life. Moon is also incredibly supportive of him and becomes interested in going into the medical field because of both her parents and from helping take care of her brother for so many years. Pebbles has been in remission since he was 12, though has a pretty weak immune system and deals with chronic pain, so whenever he gets sick Moon is…very anxious to say the least. To be honest it’s one of the few times she loses her cool, and if Pebbles so much as has the sniffles she becomes anxious to the point of being unable to sleep and forgets to take care of herself. Sig and Suns practically have to force her to let them take a “shift” of monitoring Pebbles, and unfortunately she’s kinda a nightmare to deal with until Pebbs is better. She doesn’t mean to be this way but there were multiple times in her childhood that she thought she’d wake up without a brother and hasn’t managed to fully process all that.
Pebbles copes with a lot of stuff through art so that’s how he ended up being a fine arts major. He actually draws all the custom emojis for sig’s twitch chat, and they sell them as stickers too. Other than that his favorite thing to draw is just…the small, seemingly insignificant moments of life that he never thought he’d get to see. His final project for one of his classes is a painting of Suns and Sig sitting at the kitchen table in the morning sun, with Sig holding her head up, half-asleep, and Suns hunched over their cup of coffee. He takes a lot of photos too, as references but also just as a hobby. He keeps many of them pinned to a corkboard above his desk in his room.
He’s also a dramatic little emo (bc of course he is) and dyes his (naturally blonde) hair black, and Sig helps on the condition that she is allowed to dye his bangs a different color. It’s usually a peachy pink, but occasionally they choose a different color. Notably, when Pebbs is with his really shitty (ex) boyfriend, they’re dyed blue (hah ha get it like the rot. get it. im soooo good at symbolism). He met the guy at a concert and he’s honestly just a transphobic scumbag. Pebbles breaks up with him like 5 times (…and subsequently goes to Piper for. comfort…), but gets dragged back into the relationship multiple times until he’s complaining about something he did to Sig and it goes. Dude. that is NOT normal. Pebbles then breaks up with him for the final time and when he comes crawling back to try to beg pebbles to get back together, sig punches him in the face when he tries to get into their apartment, and almost ends up with an assault charge lmfao. Honestly if she hadn’t done that moon probably would have committed first degree murder so yknow. Once that dick is out of the picture Pebbs gets the much needed TLC from Suns, Sig, and Piper so it ends up okay in the end
I’ve already yapped at length about suns but yeah, grew up catholic ends up nonbinary with like two and a half boyfriends blah blah. They’re estranged from their parents but Sig’s family (and Moon and Pebbs’) accept them with open arms. Sig’s mom is filipino and speaks to him mainly in tagalog but sig never really picked it up (…aside from swear words…) and responds to her in english. Yui likes to make fun of him for not being bilingual LMAO. When sig visits her family back in the philippines and brings moon and pebbles, the two are really nervous and try to learn at least some tagalog before visiting. This prompts Sig’s cousins to relentlessly make fun of her because THE WHITE BOY KNOWS MORE TAGALOG THAN YOU??? CMON MAN. Whenever Pebbles whips out the fuckin duolingo ass “The apple is on the table” sentences they all cheer as if he just recited shakespeare or some shit. Most of Sig’s cousins are also fluent in english too so moon and pebbles didn’t really have much to worry about. Moon gets along with them but is older than most of them so she didn’t get as close with them, but pebbles hangs out with them daily for the entire time they’re visiting and even keeps up with a couple of them once they go back to america.
Suns also has really bad issues with food (specifically texture), and was really worried about the trip, but Sig’s mom and grandmother both help accommodate them and make their safe foods or find similar things so xe is comfortable. It’s really sweet and xe even learns to cook better from it. Moon and Pebbles’ parents also like Sig and Suns and Moon’s mom does NOT hesitate to whip out the baby pictures. Their dad is also a sweetheart to suns and they play board games together :3
sooo yeah thats all i can think of for rn! i probably left out a bunch of random little anecdotes but its really just. vibes man. they get themselves into goofy shenanigans and are just all kinda living their lives with one another <3 yeah we gave em angst but hey. it ain’t TRAGEDY or anything. uhhhhh here’s more doodles if you made it this far into this ramble i love you
