Hard Times Have Pakistani Hindus Looking to India, Where Some Find Only Disappointment

JODHPUR, India — By the time an angry Muslim mob stormed the local Hindu school and ransacked an adjacent temple a few weeks ago, many members of Pakistan’s dwindling Hindu minority had already been wondering whether it was worth trying to stay in a country where they felt increasingly unsafe.

In April, an angry mob vandalized a different Hindu temple, smashing its idols and chucking the pieces in an open sewer. In May, a Hindu veterinarian was accused of blasphemy in a neighboring town, his shop burned to the ground on the rumor that he was selling medicine wrapped in Islamic religious text.

More than 70 years after the partition of India and Pakistan, increasing violence in this officially Muslim country against the Hindu minority — about 1 percent of Pakistan’s 210 million people — is leading some Hindus to rethink the choices and fate that left their families on the Pakistani side of the line in 1947, residents say.

“Most of our elders at the time of partition did not migrate to India because they did not want to lose their businesses. But now they see it was the wrong decision,” said Kumar, a small-business owner from Ghotki District in Pakistan’s Sindh Province, where the attacks unfolded on Sept. 15. He asked that his last name be withheld, fearing mob violence.

“I am considering moving to India, where at least no one can kill me on the basis of my faith,” he said.

The trepidation among Pakistani Hindus is mirrored in many ways among the Muslim minority in India, where a campaign of Hindu nationalism led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party has left many Muslims feeling targeted. Sectarian fears in both India and Pakistan always peak during times of tension, and hostility between the neighbors is running particularly high right now.

In Pakistan, local officials say the pressure for Hindus to weigh moving to India has not been this great since a wave of sectarian violence led many to migrate in the 1990s, after a Hindu mob in India tore down a 16th-century mosque, the Babri Masjid, leading to retaliatory attacks in Pakistan.

The current migration is because of Mr. Modi’s open appeals to Hindu identity in India, they say, stripping the country of the secular framework it was founded on to give supremacy to their religion.

Since Mr. Modi’s election victory, Pakistani Hindus say they have had an easier time obtaining religious or pilgrimage visas to India, which they can then convert to long-term visas if they seek Indian citizenship.

Though the exact number of Hindu migrants is hard to pin down, indications of a wider push to go to India can be seen in the numbers of those long-term visas. In 2018, the Indian government granted 12,732 long-term visas, compared with 4,712 in 2017, and 2,298 in 2016, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. About 95 percent of long-term visas are granted to Pakistani Hindus, officials say.

Millions of Hindus remained in Pakistan when Britain carved out the state from the subcontinent to create a Muslim homeland at independence in 1947. They were unwilling to abandon their homes and businesses, like the millions of Muslims who ended up on the Indian side during partition, where now about 200 million live.

But angry sectarian mobs on both sides of the border sought to change those demographics at the nations’ birth, killing up to two million people and displacing 14 million. Trains packed with terrified Muslims and Hindus fleeing in opposite directions on the railway between India and Pakistan arrived full of corpses, passengers massacred mid-journey.

Train service between the countries was suspended when they went to war in 1965 and 1971, but eventually resumed. Last month, Pakistan suspended India-bound trains once again, protesting New Delhi’s move to strip the autonomy from the portion of Kashmir it controls, a Muslim-majority state the countries have long fought over.

Even among Pakistani Hindus who are considering going to India, there are very real reasons to hesitate.

Kumar is one who is torn. Though he was shaken by the recent violence in his hometown, he said he was still reluctant to pick up and leave when the trains start running again. He has said goodbye to neighbors who have migrated to India, only to see them return to Pakistan months or years later, disappointed.

Bhagchand Bheel is one of the disappointed. When he migrated to India in 2014, he was grateful to leave the violence and pressure of Karachi, Pakistan’s commercial hub. He boarded the Thar Express to Zero Point Station, the last stop before the border, where he and his family lugged their bags by foot into India, settling in a camp in the city of Jodhpur.

He was among his people, he thought, and could finally be free. But he is of a lower caste, and when he tried to enter a Hindu temple, he was barred entry by the priest because of it, he said. And when a friend tried to drink from the community water well, he was physically assaulted by upper caste Brahmins who accused him of polluting it.

“In Pakistan, the only thing that matters is if you are Hindu or Muslim,” said Mr. Bheel, whose last name is derived from his tribe. “Because we are Hindus, in Pakistan we were discriminated against. But in India, I face discrimination because I’m a Bheel.”

Like many Pakistani Hindus, Mr. Bheel migrated after Mr. Modi came to power in 2014, after a long campaign promoting Hindu nationalism.

Muslims in India say life has gotten progressively harder for them, too. Mr. Modi’s government is accused of turning a blind eye to the scores of Muslim men lynched by Hindu mobs. When an 8-year old Muslim girl was gang raped and killed in Kashmir last year by Hindu men, local police officers allegedly helped cover up the crime.

But despite the discrimination Muslims face in India, they do not tend to migrate to Pakistan in the numbers their Hindu counterparts in Pakistan do. Indian Muslims tend to migrate to the West instead.

In the Al Kausar Nagar migrant camp in Jodhpur, huts made out of thin, wispy branches, like birds’ nests, nestle in clusters, with quilts with vibrant Pakistani tribal designs hanging off their sides.

Bands of Pakistani Hindu women crouch over unfinished quilts, stitching away, hoping to sell them in the market to wealthier Indians. They complain that they receive little government assistance, siphoning what little electricity and water they can off municipal lines, and that the quality of public schooling for their children is not as good as it is in Pakistan, a main source of grievance for the many who migrated to give their children better opportunities.

This is not the Hindu paradise they had crossed the border to join, they said. This is not the India Mr. Modi promised them.

Mr. Bheel is wracked by doubt, the same doubt his grandfather had when he chose to keep the family in Pakistan during partition. Did he make the right choice?

He left his home and siblings in Karachi, trading a lucrative job as an administrator of a medical clinic there to live as a migrant in India. His medical diploma, one of the few possessions he brought with him, hangs proudly on a wall, although it is not valid in India. He struggles to make ends meet here.

“You take these decisions sometimes out of excitement for what your life could be,” Mr. Bheel said, his daughter cuddling beside him on a bench. “Then you arrive and realize it’s much different on the ground.”

Mr. Bheel looked on as his wife struggled to contain rainwater leaking from the ceiling, after a monsoon swiftly obliterated the sunny sky. Eventually she gave up, running out of pots and buckets.

“Maybe this wasn’t the right decision for me,” he said. “But maybe my children will look back and say, ‘My father made the right choice.’”

I 10 motivi per guardare BLACK SAILS

Black Sails è una serie composta da 4 stagioni (4 ne avevano annunciate e 4 hanno concluso il ciclo) sul mondo dei pirati, ispirata principalmente a L’isola del Tesoro. Se volete altre informazioni, sulla produzione e il cast, vi consiglio la pagina Wikipedia che è davvero ben fatta.

Ho scoperto questa serie per caso, e fortunatamente qualche settimana prima della messa in onda della quarta stagione, così ho potuto recuperare le prime tre e guardarmi con calma l’ultima. Fin dal finale ho pensato che sarebbe una di quelle serie che dovrebbe diventare virale, non come Il Trono di Spade, ma nemmeno snobbarla, come è successo, solo per un inizio un po’ lento.

La prima stagione sarà una spada, ma è necessaria.

Ma passiamo ai 10 motivi:

Motivo N 1: I PIRATI

Non starò a menare il can per l’aia, a me i pirati piacciono un sacco. E, da quanto vedo dal mercato, non sono l’unica a cui piacciono. Non so quale sia il motivo per cui ancora oggi i pirati esercitino questo fascino sul pubblico. Sarà che sono fuori legge, liberi, viaggiatori, intrepidi, coraggiosi, molto fighi. Negli ultimi anni abbiamo potuto assistere a un infighettamento dei protagonisti del mondo pirata, ma questo non sembra aver diminuito i fan, anzi. Più eyeliner mettono a Johnny Deep, più i fan aumentano.

I pirati di Black Sails sono più storicamente corretti. La storia si posiziona come prequel de “L’isola del tesoro” di Stevenson, ma con molti personaggi presi dalle cronache bucaniere di Charles Johnson, quindi personaggi “reali”. Uso le virgolette perché, come per ogni pirata che si rispetti, cosa sia reale e cosa non lo sia, è indefinito. E a questo punto permettetemi di  passare direttamente al:

Motivo N2: I PERSONAGGI

Come ho scritto pocanzi, i personaggi sono più coerenti storicamente e questo per me è un punto a favore, e non perché mi stia antipatico il capitano Jack Sparrow, ma perché amo davvero i pirati e la visione semplicistica che è stata data in “Pirati dei caraibi” non mi ha fatto impazzire, per quanto mi faccia impazzire la scelta degli attori e dei costumi.

Black Sails non è semplicemente la serie che ti spiega come Long Silver sia diventato il vecchio con una gamba di legno de L’isola del tesoro. Black Sails descrive le diverse personalità che nel modo pirata si andavano a incontrare. In questa serie si trovano le varie sfaccettature di questa società così affascinante, e come ha interagito con il mondo considerato “civile” e come i due mondi non fossero né simili, né differenti.  Una delle cose che ho apprezzato di più è la coralità di questa serie. Il tutto talmente ben incastrato che consiglio il binge-watching (termine che ho scoperto grazie a Stranger Things, prima di questo io lo chiamavo “vegetare/fare la larva per 4 giorni sul divano guardando una stagione al giorno”, binge-watching mi facilita le cose) in modo che la prima stagione (che è davvero di una lentezza quasi esasperante) possa non ostacolare il resto della visione.

Motivo N4: LA STRUTTURA NARRATIVA.

Come ho già scritto, Black Sails è una serie corale, che si insegue in quattro stagioni e dove il tutto si risolve nell’ultima puntata dell’ultima stagione. Ogni personaggio ha una sua storia personale che si va a incastrare, quasi perfettamente, nella trama principale e che contribuisce alla creazione del mondo de L’isola del tesoro. Apprezzo sempre la coerenza, soprattutto nella scrittura di una serie che poteva permettersi la poca coerenza giustificandola con gli ultimi quattordici anni di Pirati Disneyani.

Di fatto tutta questa coerenza non ha reso la serie noiosa e questo per:

Motivo N4: LA RECITAZIONE.

L’intensità recitativa di tutto il cast mi ha fatto davvero impressione. In una serie che conta sette personaggi (principali e forti) con un filone narrativo, tutti sono stati ugualmente bravi.

Anche Zach McGowan, che inizialmente mi sembrava un filino carente rispetto a Toby Stephens o Tom Hopper, mi ha fatto ricredere tra le prima e la seconda stagione, e non lo dico per l’aumento dei cm quadrati di pelle che si vedono, anche se è l’unico che ha partecipato con un nudo integrale. Non so se ci fosse in corso la gara a chi è più bravo, ma di fatto ogni attore ha dato spessore, carattere e credibilità al proprio personaggio, come raramente mi è capitato di vedere in una serie TV non prodotta da HBO.

Motivo N5: BILLY

Questo, ammetto, è un motivo molto personale. Di fatto Billy è uno dei miei personaggi preferiti, sia per il suo aspetto fisico, sia perché grazie a lui sono riuscita a finire la prima stagione. Non posso rendervi partecipi del perché Billy rimarrà uno dei motivi per cui amerete questa serie perché vi dovrei spoilerare troppo, ma di fatto è il personaggio che meglio descrive la posizione del pubblico e al tempo stesso cerca il suo ruolo da protagonista. Nasce come vero pirata, combattuto tra legalità e illegalità. Il sogno e la realtà. I grandi sentimenti e i più bassi desideri. Tom Hopper fa un lavoro meraviglioso ogni volta che è sulla scena e, per quando Jamie Lannister non ricordi mai il suo nome, ritengo questa di Black Sail una delle sue prove migliori da attore e spero che gli porti fortuna.

Motivo N6: IL CAPITANO FLINT

Ebbene sì. Per quanto tutti lo odierete fin dalla prima puntata, questo perfetto capitano pirata rappresenta uno dei motivi per cui non smetterete di guardare Black Sails. Folle, disperato, egoista, avido, Flint è il perfetto capitano, per quanto, come ho scritto più volte, i personaggi in questa serie evolvono e una volta compresa la storia di ogni personaggio, tutti hanno una giustificazione. Certo, tutti i pirati.

Motivo N7: LA VISIONE DEL MONDO

Fondamentalmente Black Sails divide il mondo in due fazioni:

PIRATI e NON PIRATI

e per quanto fossero i primi ad essere in una posizione di illegalità, sono i secondi a fare una figura peggiore.

I cosiddetti Civili, non solo ingannano e infrangono la legge come i pirati, ma lo fanno per i motivi più meschini, per il loro tornaconto, mentre per quanto siano ladri e farabutti i pirati difendono il loro concetto di libertà, hanno degli ideali (chi alti chi non) e dei sogni. È affascinante vedere come i pirati che vengono civilizzati sembrano perdere i propri ideali senza nemmeno combattere, come se la società civile ci togliesse l’onere di avere degli ideali veri.  Non sono molti i personaggi che fanno questo percorso, da pirata a civilizzato (e badate bene, non è accettando la grazia che si diventa civilizzati), ma ognuno viene come assorbito da questa mancanza. La visione di Black Sail è quella più simile alla visione pirata, dove i pirati sono ladri, farabutti, stupratori, assassini, ma anche i civili lo sono, e se i pirati sono tutto questo perché non possono essere nient’altro, i civili lo sono per puro piacere edonistico.  E senza dare troppi dettagli, basti vedere lo scontro che c’è tra Barbanera e Rogers.

Motivo N8: LA SIGLA

Motivo N9: UNA VISIONE PARITARIA DEI SESSI

Di norma nelle serie di avventura le donne sono poco presenti, e Black Sail non fa eccezioni… anche se ad ogni controparte maschile c’è una controparte femminile che agisce e pensa da sola. Le donne in Black Sail sbagliano, come sbagliano gli uomini, ingannano, uccidono, sono vittime e carnefici. Ognuna di loro ha un percorso condivisibile o meno, ma c’è un profondo rispetto per queste donne. Rispetto che si sono conquistate con le unghie e con i denti e che viene messo in discussione ogni volta che spunta un uomo. Ritengo che sia una visione disincantata del mondo femminile con tutte le contraddizioni che questo porta.

Motivo N10: JACK RACKHAM

Lo lascio per ultimo perché ho compreso la sua importanza alla fine. Jack Rackham è la rappresentazione del pirata letteario per eccellenza. Il giusto incontro tra la storia e la leggenda, Sparrow e Flint. E per quanto sbagli la maggior parte delle volte non si riesce mai ad odiarlo. Rackham rappresenta quello che ancora oggi affascina tutti del mondo pirata e lo rappresenta meglio di Silver per un solo motivo, Rackham non è nessuno. Mentre tutto gli altri quando iniziano ad assomigliare ai pirati dei nostri sogni sono ormai all’apice di quella, che potremmo definire, la loro carriera, Rackham per tutto il tempo ci prova, e ci riuscirà, ne siamo certi, come da bambini eravamo certi che avremmo solcato i sette mari in cerca dei tesori più prezioni della marina britannica e degli ori spagnoli.

Non sono quella delle recensioni a punti, ma spero vi sia piaciuta. E mi raccomando: GUARDATE BLACK SAILS, anche solo per dirmi che avevo torto!

LA BELLA E LA BESTIA

Il principe Adam ha tutto ciò che si possa desiderare dalla vita: un castello, la servitù disposta ad esaudire ogni sua richiesta e ricchezza. Una sera, durante uno degli ennesimi ricevimenti, si presenta alla sua porta una vecchia mendicante, che chiede riparo dal freddo pungente della notte. Il giovane, dopo averla derisa, la caccia via senza preoccuparsi delle conseguenze del gesto; la donna, che in realtà non è altri che una maga, si trasforma rivelando il proprio vero aspetto, ma a quel punto per il principe è troppo tardi: ella, infatti, dopo aver constatato che non c’è amore nel suo cuore, decide di trasformarlo in un’orrenda bestia e getta un incantesimo sul castello e su tutti i suoi abitanti. Una rosa è l’unico dono che gli offre, in modo da ricordargli quanto possa essere cangiante la propria condizione: se Adam, infatti, fosse riuscito ad innamorarsi ed essere ricambiato da una giovane prima che l’ultimo petalo fosse caduto, l’incantesimo si sarebbe spezzato, ma in caso contrario sarebbe rimasto una bestia per sempre. Con il passare del tempo il principe cade nello sconforto e perde ogni speranza, ma del resto chi avrebbe mai potuto amare una bestia?

Ho citato volutamente la frase del narratore della storia nell’originale classico Disney del 1991 per farvi capire quanto conosco bene il film e quanto gli sono affezionata, quindi la recensione che vi apprestate a leggere non potrà che contenere belle parole. Consiglio caldamente a tutti di visionare il film d’animazione prima di aver visto questa trasposizione, perché, al di là della trama, l’intera vicenda è fedele al 100% alla versione del ‘91. La pellicola, inizialmente, non doveva essere un musical, ma il regista Bill Condon (si, è lo stesso degli ultimi Harry Potter) ha insistito per farne una commedia musicale e scelta migliore non è mai stata fatta: questa storia nasce, ed è a tutti gli effetti, fatta per essere cantata dall’inizio alla fine. Credetemi, c’è gente che in sala l’ha fatto! La scelta del cast è, senza dubbio, azzeccata e qui è doveroso spendere qualche parolina in più su quelli principali:

1)   Belle, interpretata da Emma Watson, è una delle poche eroine Disney ad avere un ruolo attivo nella vicenda: qui, segue anche le orme paterne, diventando inventore della lavatrice. La Watson ha creato con la sua interpretazione un personaggio delizioso: spontaneo, falsamente ingenuo, ma forte e coraggioso, pronto a fronteggiare pericoli più grandi di lei.

2)   Gaston, interpretato da Luke Evans, è uno dei pochi villain per i quali si prova una certa simpatia: ex soldato tornato in patria, è l’idolo di tutte le ragazze del villaggio di Villeneuve, anche se ignorantotto, è amato e rispettato da tutti, in particolar modo dal suo fido amico Le Tont (che nel film è palesemente omosessuale, cosa che ha vietato l’uscita nelle sale di diversi Paesi del Mondo).

3)   La bestia/ il principe, interpretati da Dan Stevens, sono i due protagonisti in opposizione fra loro: uno brutto e spaventoso, l’altro bello e aitante. La bestia, interamente creata in grafica computerizzata, inizialmente animalesca nei modi, torna a riacquisire i comportamenti umani grazie alla bontà di Belle. Il principe, che nella pellicola, vediamo brevemente nelle parti iniziali e finali, ha tutto fuorché l’aspetto di un uomo reale: so che nel ‘700 l’uso della barba non era in voga tra la nobiltà, ma il volto glabro e l’aspetto fanciullesco dell’attore non aiutano a renderlo più affascinante e più bello dell’antagonista che, qui, è una spanna sopra rispetto a lui.

4)   Maurice e la servitù del castello: se dovessi fare i nomi delle star scelte per interpretare i personaggi secondari, rimarremmo qui per lungo tempo. Vi basti sapere che tra loro c’è Kevin Kline (fondamentale nella storia, ma alla quale ormai vengono relegate parti sempre più marginali negli ultimi film), che ha avuto modo di riscattarsi, portando in scena un padre di Belle affettuoso, ma scaltro (cosa che nel film d’animazione non è), Lumière impersonato dallo scozzese Ewan McGregor (e qui vi consiglio di vedere la versione in lingua originale per sentire l’accento utilizzato che dovrebbe essere tipicamente francese), Tockins, interpretato da sir Ian McKellen, che altri non è che l’orologio brontolone e concierge del castello e, per concludere, la deliziosa Emma Thompson nel ruolo di Mrs Bric, la teiera buona, dispensatrice di consigli.

Impossibile sostenere che questo live action della Bella e la Bestia non l’abbia amato dall’inizio alla fine, cantando, ridendo e, a volte, commuovendomi nelle scene più drammatiche, ecco perché lo consiglio davvero a tutti: avrete sicuramente modo di tornare bambini per 129 minuti.

Adding that she wished to set the story versus the lively and attractive background of Rajasthan where she hung out engaging with ladies in backwoods, hence selecting Udaipur, Makijany states, “We had three prerequisites to lock a place: It had to have a rustic village backdrop; should have concrete roads so kids could skate; and there had to be over a thousand kids in and around the village so the skate park could be beneficial to the local community after the film. We ultimately zeroed in on Khempur, a remote village situated in Mavli, around 50kms away from Udaipur”

Talking about her approaching tasks– ‘Skate Basti’ (Skate Village) and ‘Spin’, the filmmaker states that the previous is a documentary that follows the journey of regional kids in Khempur, Rajasthan after being presented to skateboarding at the Desert Dolphin Skate park. “It’s a longer project as we’re tracking real life stories of the children. These kids who had never stepped on a skateboard before the skate park was made were now in state jerseys traveling for the first time outside their villages to take part in a National level championship.”

‘Spin’, which is Disney Channel’s initially Indian American story that follows Rhea, an Indian American teenager whose journey of self-discovery empowers her to discover her real love – producing and producing beat-driven music instilled with her South Asian culture. “It was an exciting opportunity to introduce our Indian culture to an American audience through music. I also had the opportunity to work with Marius De Vries (composer Romeo Juliet, Moulin Rouge) and bring on Salim-Sulaiman to do an original song for the film. Projects like this that allow me to bring the best of the two worlds together is very exciting. There is also Abhay Deol and Meera Syal in the film with Avantika as the lead. The film releases on August 31, 2021.”

While she might recommend the sensation of neighborhood watching and the experience of seeing motion pictures on a cinema, Makijany feels that OTT platforms have actually permitted filmmakers to check out stories that would otherwise never ever be touched owing to the threat of ticket office numbers. “I always knew our story would strike a chord with a global audience as the themes explored in ‘Skater Girl’ are very universal. American History X è uno di quei film che andrebbero visti almeno una volta nella vita, capace di far raccontare una parte della storia americana molto incisiva e di far riflettere lo spettatore in maniera profonda.

Uscito nel 1998, questo lungometraggio si basa su personaggi ed eventi storici realmente accaduti, analizzando i principi assurdi che muovono gli animi degli skinhead.

Ecco, allora, dieci cose da sapere su American History X.

1. Il protagonista si basa su una persona vera. Il personaggio protagonista di American History X, Derek Vinyard, si basa sulla vita reale di uno skinhead. La persona in questione sarebbe Frank Meeink, uno dei maggiori esponenti del movimento skinhead.

2. Gli attori modificavano la sceneggiatura. Costanti modifiche alla sceneggiatura da parte di Edward Furlong e Edward Norton hanno portato il regista, Tony Kaye, ad essere deluso del progetto e desiderando di lasciarlo. Basti pensare che a Joaquin Phoenix era stato offerto il ruolo di Derek Vinyard: tuttavia, l’attore ha trovato sgradevole l’argomento del film, decidendo di rifiutare l’offerta.

7. Era stato preso in considerazione Marlon Brando. Inizialmente, si era pensato di scritturare Marlon Brando per il ruolo di Cameron Alexander, basato su Tom Metzger, leader della Whiter Aryan Resistance. Alla fine, però, l’ingaggio non è andato in porto.

8. Anche un altro attore era stato considerato per il film. Durante la scelta degli attori atti ad interpretare i vari personaggi del film, era stato considerato anche Paul Mazursky per il ruolo di Murray.
