(dif anon) So is Ashfur grooming Shadowsight a plotline you would keep/rework in BB? I'm not so keen on the way canon used it to retcon his epilepsy, but I do think a plotline examining how clerics can be vulnerable to abuse from StarClan spirits is kinda compelling
Shadowsight's epilepsy is staying in BB, the Erins can try and take it away again over my dead body
Yes, that's staying and BB!StarClan was reworked with unfairness in mind.
This time around, I'm considering the idea that Ashfur didn't work completely alone. After the events of Squirrelflight’s Horror, Silverpelt's divisons are starting to crackle the stars.
Skystar and the other more traditional spirits are losing patience with the peace that Fire Alone brings, and the ways that the code has been bent.
They feel that honor is being lost in their descendants.
Even angels disrespect the collective; see how Skypelt has its own heaven? With a demon in its midst? There is blasphemy even in the skies.
Firestar and the more modern pantheon are ferociously defensive of the choices of the living. StarClan exists for them; not the other way around.
Meanwhile, Mousefur has gone missing. Others start to blink out, too. This is causing panic... and Ashfur keeps it quiet that he's the only one who knows where they've gone.
The angels that plan action probably were a small group to begin with, radical spirits. Skystar and Ashfur are two of them, and Ash is the "youngest." So when he comes down to the mortal plane and betrays them, very few other angels knew what had happened.
(I might even have a few angels be doing the various supernatural things in that first book, but slowly, Ashfur is wittling down their numbers until it's just him.)
I'm still working out specifics, but the other angels that Ashfur has consumed are giving him a massive power boost. He can use this to jump between planes freely, and he's able to do some whacky things like weave dreams and pull nightmares out of the Dark Forest.
The most important unique power he has, which he can do ALL on his own once he's absorbed enough starpower, is blast Shadowpaw with a bolt of lightning. The electric current runs through Shadowpaw's brand new scar, giving him a connection to StarClan like he's a little radio tower.
Thing is... when StarClan is blocked off, the only signal he receives is Ashfur's.
So, Shadowpaw.
From the time he was very young, Shadowkit has had an unhealthy relationship to life and death
He watched a lot of cats die before he was old enough to really understand it, and the only one who came back was Heartstar.
His epilepsy was so severe it would have been terminal. He was prepared to die as a kit.
Tawnypelt took him to the Tribe to learn more about treatments, bringing back a method of refining chamomile to manage the convulsions.
When people come back from death, it was to serve "a purpose."
He feels like he needs to be special, like he needs to find the great meaning in his life. The reason why he's still here.
In BB, there can be guardian angels. Cats you knew in life who decide to watch out for you in the afterlife. Moleflight is Jayfeather's, Shrewface is Squirrelflight’s. Ashfur poses as Shadowpaw's.
THAT is how I plan to address my criticism. Ashfur DOES build a very personal, trusting relationship with Shadowpaw, pretending to be the one who's here to give him the destiny he craves. Pretending like he's someone looking out for him.
I actually LIKE how desperate the situation was in-canon and I want to stress how none of this was Shadow's fault, so I also plan to keep that they had very little choice. Shadowpaw trusts his angel completely, and Ashfur coaches him on saying all the right things.
The older Clerics are suspicious, but... what else can they do?
Also, instead of framing this all as something Shadowpaw needs to "atone" for, I'm going to make certain cats unfairly scapegoat him for bringing the Impostor into the forest. Shadowpaw himself agrees with them, blaming himself, but he has to learn it wasn't his fault.
He DIDN'T let anyone down by failing to live up to great expectations, and there's no way he could have known that Ashfur was using him. This never happened before, he always made the choice he thought was right and tried to make up for harm done, and he's not responsible for what his abuser made him do.
I actually want to have him figure out some of this by talking to DF demons, towards the end. Cats faaaar more responsible for what they did in life than him.
Ravenwing in particular, who was also mislead by a rogue StarClan spirit, but... ultimately decided that if StarClan was right in their judgement.
He was told (by Birchface, but he still doesn't know who it was in particular) to make three kittens unsafe by revealing their parentage. His choice killed three innocent children, and lead to the Queen’s Rights.
And StarClan was furious that he'd ever believe they'd want something so CRUEL.
And even if they DID want something so cruel... "Then they wouldn't have been ancestors worth following. And that's why I believe it's right that I'm here."
As a Cleric, he had authority on their behalf. And if they would misuse it through him, he wishes he could have just given it right back.
And Shadowsight's lightbulb goes Ding!
The very last thing Ashfur does in TBC, when the jig is up and he's about to be killed by the Lights in the Mist and a bunch of Demons who have come to defend their home, is swallow a Founder-- Skystar.
He takes the level of a true god, and reaches a nearly undefeatable level of power. Instead of black water, he's so large, malicious, and has a gravitational pull so massive it starts destroying the afterlife. It shatters the purgatory (Meadow of Young Stars) into floating cosmic fragments, and Heaven and Hell are set to collide.
Shadowsight confronts Ashfur, politely explaining that he's, well... done a lot of thinking, and, he doesn't really want what he gave him. "You can, uh, have this back!"
And blasts the lightning from his scar right back at him, like a chain, holding the screeching eldrich horror in place. Every ally he's made, here in the DF, come down from StarClan, and as Lights in the Mist, jump to his side. They can't hold down Ashfur, but they can hold SHADOWSIGHT
While they're all supporting him, Bristlefrost sees the one chance to get rid of him, once and for all. A clear shot. She bolts, pounces, and SHOOTS right into Ashfur like a falling star, knocking them both off the edge of the heaven he destroyed, burning up in orbit with a monster a hundred times her size.
And after that, Shadowsight has to go home and live with this.
He gave up the very connection that made him so special, and now he has to go back to being a Cleric without StarClan.
but the other Clerics accept this. They have to. They were all complicit in the choices that allowed the Impostor to rise.
What Shadowsight learns is... everyone was part of this. From those who made the follies with him, to the supporters and rebels against the impostor, to those who helped him realize his worth, to Bristlefrost who ultimately killed Ashfur.
He is valuable because living is valuable.
Everyone, and everything, matters. All cats have a role to play, and he was never alone.
I want to close him out in BB!TBC on a tea scene that parallels the various points in his life. Others used to prepare his chamomile treatments FOR him, in careful doses, because it is a very serious medicine. Now, at the end, he's the one brewing it.
A fully fledged Cleric, who realizes he's never been alone. Cats who love him were around him the whole time, making his medicine, and they'll love him even after he's given up his powerful gift. So now he's at the stage in his life where HE can make that medicine, share his wisdom with others, and find fulfillment in the skills he's acquired over a hard life brightening.

WIP Wednesday
Thank you for the tag @greypetrel! Tagging in turn @star--nymph @ndostairlyrium @zenstrike @dungeons-and-dragon-age @daggerbean @transprincecaspian, no pressure as always!
Here is a little piece of a fic about when Emma first came to Kirkwall:
“Varric is pleased that you’ll be staying.”
The tea hadn’t been given long enough to brew. Maria sipped it anyway, then set the delicate teacup back on its saucer. She’d broken out the good porcelain for her illustrious visitor, but the Inquisitor did not seem herself. Or rather—not the version of herself that Hawke remembered. There was something sharp about her now. Her cheeks seemed hollower somehow, the jagged ends of her shorn hair jabbing at her shoulders in accusation.
Varric had been right to worry. Hawke had wondered if he was just being fussy, but…yes. She understood now.
“I’m glad,” Lavellan said, crossing one leg over the other.
She’d been stirring her tea for several minutes, but she set the spoon aside now and took a sip. If she liked it, Hawke could not tell.
“Have you found the manor to your liking?”
“Yes,” Lavellan said, eyes straying to the corner of the library.
Sun pooled on the little table before the window there, a promise of the delights to be had in the courtyard beyond. If Lavellan had not come for tea, Hawke would be out there now. If she strained, she could hear Fenris’s low voice murmuring to Leander. It was funny, sometimes, to remember what he had been like when they’d first met. She could never have imagined that he could be so…well. Effusive rather covered it, she thought.
When they’d first met—well. He’d been rather like the woman who sat across from her now. There’d been something burning behind his eyes then, something she’d seen a dozen times after. Vengeance, she supposed, and a need to see the wrongs done to him righted. Something burned in Lavellan’s eyes, too. Hawke was not entirely sure that she wanted to know what it was.
“I am sorry,” Lavellan closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. “I am still getting used to all of this. I appreciate you inviting me here. I hadn’t expected…well. I am grateful.”
This, too, sounded little like the woman Maria remembered. The Inquisitor had been sharp then, too, but sharp like a rapier or a scalpel. She had been precise in all things. Now—she was sharp like a mirror after a fist had been put through it.
The last time Hawke had seen her, she’d been in love.
“There is more to the city than I’d thought,” Lavellan went on, twisting the teacup over and over in her lap. The pale green tea swayed close to the rim over and over, but never quite spilled past the edge. “More stairs, at least.”
“The stairs always take people aback,” Hawke agreed. “I recall being sore all over when we first came here. You’ll get used to them sooner than you expect.”
“Perhaps,” Lavellan took another sip of her tea, then set it down again. “And you? I seem to remember you mentioning a place outside the city where you’d been staying. Do you live here all the time now?”
“More or less. Varric asked me to come back—said being Viscount was awfully boring without me around to keep things interesting. Did he say the same to you?”
“Something like that.”
Fenris’s voice rose outside, nearing the door downstairs. It creaked open, then latched shut again.
“What do you…usually…” Lavellan’s eyes fixed somewhere behind Hawke. Her smile, which could only be described as polite, fixed itself into a rictus on her face.
“Maria, he needs—” Fenris cut himself off abruptly, taking a swift step to the side—out of the open doorway, Hawke noted. “Who is this?”
Lavellan said nothing. Her face was horrible to look at.
“Inquisitor Lavellan,” Maria said, looking between the two of them. They couldn’t possibly know each other. This had to be something else. Something she didn’t have the context for. “Emmaera Lavellan. She’s the one who got me out of the Fade. Remember?”
Fenris said nothing. His lips were pressed closed and his free hand had come up to curl around Leander’s little head.
“You have a child,” Lavellan said, and there was a sharp noise as the teacup landed on the table. “I mean—thank you. For the tea. I need to go now.”
“Yes, I—Ah.”
The former Inquisitor was gone almost before Hawke had finished speaking, the edge of her cloak sweeping round the doorway only moments before the front door swung shut.
“Hawke,” Fenris said, his eyes fixed on the doorway. Maria set her tea aside and stood, following the path her guest had taken. The foyer was empty.
“What happened?” Fenris asked, for he’d followed her into the room. He scanned the empty foyer and relaxed slightly. Leander, who’d been busily gnawing on his father’s collar, made an inquisitive noise.
“Well,” she told the closed front door. “I can’t say it went well, Varric. No, I didn’t convince her that she ought to stay. Yes, I know that’s the only thing you asked me to do. Andraste’s knees.”
“I couldn’t for the life of me say,” Hawke said, lifting their son from Fenris’s arms. She pressed a kiss to his pale, curling hair and turned back to the library. “Do you know each other?”
“She wasn’t looking at me,” Fenris said, his voice dark.
“Hmm,” Hawke murmured, and pressed another, longer kiss to her son’s curls.

Thank you again for all the encouragement! Turns out when you get over the terror, sharing this stuff is rather fun :)
It’s all kicking off with work stuff so I might not get back to this for a bit… but here is there unedited first half of chapter 3… possibly. It might actually be another fic altogether but Virgil insisted this memory was important so I’m sure it’ll help make sense of the mystery eventually…
Music
It had been a fairly unremarkable post-tornado mission in Kansas, helping out the local recovery teams rescue the last few trapped souls from crumpled buildings. Somehow everyone had survived although there’d be a lot of people on crutches hobbling round the town centre for the next few weeks.
The only remarkable things were that the town centre in question was the closest to the the Tracy family ranch and that one of the few buildings which had come off unscathed and was being used as a shelter for those currently without was the very school that Scott, Virgil, John and Gordon had attended.
Virgil escorted the last batch of townsfolk into the school hall and hesitated in the doorway - Scott was going to be ages sorting through the paperwork with the major so he had to wait *somewhere* and the idea of returning to Two to sit on his own after this oddly emotional afternoon didn’t sit right - he wanted company. An elderly lady bustled over with a tray and he gratefully accepted the offer of a cup of coffee before realising that he wasn’t going to be able to hold it. Flustered, he shed the exo-suit in a quiet corner (which immediately ceased to be quiet as 15 small children crowded round to peer at it) and then clutched the warm mug and gazed around the familiar but somehow TINY surroundings. It seemed like almost nothing had changed except he felt like a giant. The gym climbing frame was still attached to the back wall, the small stage with podium was still in the same spot at the front and and just next to it, hmm that wasn’t there before, it looks like… OH…
Virgil made a beeline for the ancient upright piano and ran a shaking hand along the lid. There were a few more chunks out of the woodwork now, but it was definitely the same one that used to live in the music room! He wondered if… yep, the second key from the left still didn’t sound. Seems he was the only one ever to want to play a low Bb. He casually ran his left hand up a scale of B major and tapped the top B with the right and chuckled. It was *almost* in tune.
“Play us a tune, Mister!”
The kids had abandoned the exo-suit, concluding it was less interesting without the real life Thunderbird in it and had followed him across the hall. Virgil chuckled and tapped out the tune to an old theme by Barry Grant for a tv show he’d heard was having a resurgence amongst the kids. Then he paused, noticing the stain on several keys that had resulted from an old class mate opening a can of cola. He had a sudden, vivid picture of the formidable Ms Knighton walking over to his 8-year old self and, as he paused guiltily with his hands in mid-air she’d encouraged - “Virgil, an instrument is made to be played, please do continue, but… I intend to listen if you would permit it?” She’d come in to listen to him play several times afterwards but had never said anything more just nodded her approval as he finished. The support was of an unusual kind, but he’d felt it all the same. He was arrested by a sudden sense of guilt and loss as he absolutely had no idea what had become of her. He absentmindedly played a few phrases of that same Mozart piece he’d been working on back then but hadn’t really returned to for years.
“VIRGIL TRACY!!” An elderly lady wrapped in layers of blankets stood from her chair and pointed at him with a trembling hand but piercing stare.
TBC ;-)
Btw the tv theme he was playing starts at 0:30 of this video:
youtube
And the little snippet of Mozart is from 3:10 of this one:

Really funny how once again forehead touching is being shown as intimate and romantic. Like it was always that, yet certain types bend over backwards to handwave it away when it comes to BB. BB is slowburn romance at its finest, yet gets hit w/ double standards so often its unreal. Also tbc this is only aimed at the double standard bullshit and those that use it. The ones that act like there’s only 1 right way to do LGBT+ pairings, instead of an entire damn array of them w/ all being valid.

Maximilian Robespierre, Deputy. ‘Incorruptible’. Mountain’s Highly Confidential WhatsApp Group
Wow. What a week, guys! Did you see my speech on virtue and terror the other day. Four pages in the Moniteur, three in the Revolutions de Paris and a special pullout in the Jacobin Club bulletin with a questionnaire ‘how virtuous are you?’ and a special souvenir print. By David. Of me!
Danton: No one reads the JCC anymore since the nutters took over
Camille: I keep a pile by the privy. Looroll’s so expensive these days!
Shade of Jean-Paul: You stole all my best lines. Even your nickname is mine
All: WTF! How did you get on here?
Shade: I am everywhere. I am the eye of the people!
Bertrand: Quick, everyone. Block him! Now!
Shade: you seem to forget, I am the moderator. And I have the password
Bertrand: Moderate! You! Moderate? Ha!
Shade: and you call yourself a writer?! Fucking windvane!
Max: damn! Just ignore him guys. Now as I was saying….
Louis-Antoine: but he can still be useful. You know, the people kind of worship him now
Max: but I want them to worship me! Why won’t they worship me?
All: sniggering
Camille: because you’re not dead?
George: because you’re killing them?
Max: that’s not fair
Camille: would you prefer it in Latin?
Max: et tu Camillus?
Bertrand: (clears throat) c’mon public safety people, we’re getting off the point. So Max, I got your speech translated into English. Found an excellent expat with impeccable credentials, Ms Helen Maria Williams. We’re going to print it up on English type and smuggle it over the Channel to freak them all out and show what a nice guy you really are.
Max: merci BB
Shade: (interrupting) I denounce…
All: blocked!
Shade: … you can all take your worthless block and shove it up your collective arse. I denounce Barere and Ms Williams
Camille: For god’s sake Jean-Paul, get a grip
George: I do not know this individual
Max: me either
Bertrand: is that even proper grammar?
Max: it is now!
George: right, I’m bored. Got to see a man about a property
Camille: can I come?
George: no, no, and always, no! And yes my friends, I shall in future be terrorising my new wife by asking her, ‘are you feeling virtuous tonight?’ You should try it Max, might loosen you up a bit
Camille: he should be so lucky! I feel a song coming on. Red, the sound of ages past, blue the colour of my hair, white the…
All: no!

I'm still wading through some brain fog so I'm not writing as much as I want to, currently. But I have just been absently sketching Willowpelt because she's been on my mind
Tumblr media
I had initially been working with the "hyena" face in mind, but I've been playing around with the "villainous role" idea for Ferncloud's Parting. I mentioned it to my partner who pointed out that big, strong profiles like that are overused for "vengeful" characters.
Besides, I really love drawing that face shape anyway, so I figured I'd move away from it since it's going to be on a LOT of RiverClan cats in particular (they have longer muzzles than other Clans because they hunt in water).
I'm leaning towards "bat" now... maybe I'll retool it so it's more deer-like. Deer are totally underused as inspiration for harsh characters...
Anyway ready for some WIP material? Plus a recap of Ferncloud's Parting for all who need a refresher
(oh wow it got long. The power of girlies <3)
FERNCLOUD'S PARTING... Refresher!!
Replaces Graystripe's Vow completely, taking place just after the Impostor has been deposed and is imprisoned. Ferncloud is now the main POV, accompanied on her journey by her childhood best friend Cloudtail and the Impostor's surviving lackey, Bumblestripe.
The goal of this SE is to explore Ferncloud's relationship to her younger brother, Ashfur.
(BB canon: Ferncloud and Elderberry are the older kits of Brindleface. Ashkit was a singlet born shortly before his mother's death, raised by Fern, Elder, and their grandmother One-eye. Fireheart botched the Queen's Rights while claiming Cloudkit, but for all intents and purposes was socially his Mi... which he was not good at being. Cloudtail was Ashfur's mentor and Ferncloud's childhood friend.)
Ferncloud is asking herself the question; "What could I have done to prevent this?"
A lot of secondary questions revolve around this... Does this make her responsible for what Ashfur has done? Did she teach him anything that contributed to who he is today? Does that make her responsible?
Cloudtail is in a similar situation, as Ashfur's mentor and someone who only ever wanted to help his friend. Could HE have prevented this? He wants to find out.
Graystripe, oldest cat in ThunderClan, accompanies the little group as far as the mountain... and decides to stay there, with his golden boy, Stormfur.
Bumblestripe had come along with them all, for... a lot of complicated reasons. But the most relevant is that he had been one of the Impostor's most loyal, brutal enforcers. Berrynose was killed in a huge skirmish, and now there's just Bumblestripe left alone to shoulder his sins.
After saying goodbye to his father for what's probably the last time, getting to meet the mythical oldest brother he's been compared to his entire life, and seeing Cloud and Fern looking to visit the Old Forest Territories... Bumblestripe goes with them even further to make sure the old cats stay safe.
Like Graystripe's Vow, I'm planning to keep the split chronology. It goes back and forth between Ferncloud in the Broken Era, and Ferncloud back during the Fire Era.
The ultimate moral here, the point I want to build to, is that Cloudtail and Ferncloud did exactly what was expected of them. They raised a loyal warrior who holds the code above all. They're only responsible for Ashfur insofar as they were responsible for teaching him the same values of vengeance, violence, and distrust of outsiders as was expected... in Firestar's absence.
(Though... there's lots of other questions that I don't think FP will answer. Like, COULD they have truly stopped him? Can they ever understand WHY, if they don't currently? There's a LOT of feelings here and I don't know if all of them really have answers.)
WIP STUFF TIME
Here's new stuff, I've either not mentioned this before, or I've mentioned it in passing without actually linking it to Ferncloud's Parting.
I have a LOT of ideas here that I have to start sorting through. I think these characters are all really interesting so it's really a matter of cutting down all these little details into something more coherent.
When Ashkit is young, he's a child. There was nothing particularly outstanding about him, besides the fact he was a bit lonely and eager to please.
There's a bit of an air of "loss" when Ferncloud thinks back to Ashpaw's childhood. Elderberry and One-eye will be dying soon after the "flashback" segments, so when she goes back to the modern era, thinking about them feels bittersweet.
I also want to sneak in that Ferncloud feels jealous over Cloudtail's mateship with Brightheart lmao, because she has a crush on Brightheart. (Note, maybe tie this to Ashfur being obsessed with Squirrelflight, with Fern questioning if her jealousy rubbed off on Ashfur)
Through helping WarriorClan, Bumblestripe feels REALLY good. They don't know anything about his past, his struggles, or his failures as a person. He's just a hero to them and that feels... good.
Watching Bumblestripe be good, learning more about his issues and WHY he did what he did while following Ashfur brings Cloud and Fern some insight... but not entirely what they need. Is Ashfur just a Bumblestripe on a bigger scale? Or are they just learning more about how good of a manipulator Ashfur is? In which case... where did that ability to manipulate come from?
Fang/Honeysuckle might be Bumblestripe's half-brother. If that's the case, Bumble is... frustrated by it. MORE of his dad's complicated legacy.
Ferncloud and Cloudtail probably have some short discussions about how much is really appropriate to teach to WarriorClan... after all, they're here questioning if any part of Ashfur was THEIR fault, what if they accidentally teach them something terrible?
But at the same time, Ferncloud is the Educator of ThunderClan, and these cats can't write. The Glyph system would be very useful to them, and they're begging to learn more about Clan culture.
Putting a pin in that part, for now. Will tie back more into the conclusion that the Clan cat party ultimately reaches.
BACK IN THE PAST; Firestar is away bringing back SkyClan in Firestar's Quietus. Everything that is done is without him.
Longtail, the deputy, is blinded and a leader does not immediately rise to fill the space in ThunderClan.
And in BloodClan, their trading partner... Scourge does the same. Oops! WRONG TIME, SCOOJ!
Planning to retire, Scourge announces an event called The Frenzy. He will choose the next leader from whoever accomplishes the biggest achievement in the given timeframe. This is how BloodClan passes on leadership.
He gives his chosen heir, Claw, their first Frenzy Achievement-- the fang of a dog from his own collar. Anyone who wishes to take power instead must accomplish a feat even bigger than what had allowed SCOURGE to take power in the first place; Killing a dog.
Fury is a challenger. She does NOT want Scourge's chosen heir, Claw, to lead BloodClan next. Claw will continue the trading and friendliness towards Clan cats, which Fury wants to end.
ENTER WILLOWPELT
Willowpelt ALSO wants this trading with BloodClan to stop. She feels it's gone too far.
BloodClan killed her mate-- Whitestorm. Firestar might have been willing to just throw his life away for this, but she's NOT.
She's recovering from a boar bite, currently, but it's scarring up nicely... and she's willing to pretend she's injured a little longer if it shakes suspicion off her.
She doesn't WANT to be allies with Fury, but if her goal is to bring BloodClan back into isolation... then, Willowpelt will do it.
And Fury promises her something else; Revenge. Scourge is the reason why Whitestorm died, and together, they can ruin his plans and make him watch as his peaceful little power transfer crumbles into ash.
GOOD SETUP IMO but I still need to work out what nefarious deed they'll do, exactly. All I know is that Fury will betray Willowpelt at the height of it. Maybe something about taking over Barley's barn. Maybe Elderberry gets killed.
But, I have one very strong feeling in mind; Ferncloud probably ends up killing Fury while Ashpaw watches or even helps.
Hmm... maybe Graystripe (becomes deputy as soon as Firestar gets back for handling this crisis so well) ordered them to let Fury go.
But Ferncloud looked at Fury, and decided that Willowpelt was right about one thing. Most BloodClan cats cannot be trusted.
The code does not apply equally to outsiders.
Maybe I WILL have Fury end up killing Elderberry in some way, and then give Ferncloud and Ashpaw a conversation about it. "Those who don't live by the code will not be protected by it. And we must protect our Clan... even if Graystripe doesn't realize it."
I could make it clear that Fury is not a threat at that point, having been beaten in some way and Claw ascending to BloodClan leadership. OR I could have left it open-ended, like, maybe Fury would be a future problem, maybe not. Not sure yet.
Willowpelt of course will also need to experience some consequences for this... unleeeess, I have Graystripe let her off really easy exactly because she's Clanborn, which even Cloudtail is frustrated about, maybe even coining the term "Codebreaker" as an insult under his breath.
In any case, Ferncloud never told Cloudtail about how she secretly killed Fury. It's too juicy to have her reveal it to him in the modern day, explaining that it IS her fault, she DID teach him the wrong thing.
Hmm... I'm talking myself into it. Though I did also like the original vibe that Ashfur's tyranny was kind of unknowable, trying to make sense out of a senseless thing he did. I think it feels a lot more interesting for Ferncloud to have been hiding this for literal years, and now feeling like she has to "pay the world back" for what she did.
Maybe even build towards something metal about Fury's grave. Hmm... maybe to hide the murder, she buried her in Elderberry's freshly dug one, since no one would notice the soil had been recently disturbed as it was JUST dug.
Buried my sister and my secret victim in the same grave. ~Just Girlie Things~
Cloudtail sitting here, War Criminal to the right and Secret Murderer to the left like "can i ever be around normal people. like, just once"
Jokes aside... Cloudtail needs to point out something very important. Ferncloud regretted what she did, and she never did what Ashfur is doing. She never sought power, when Firestar came back she's lived a long life without ever once undermining him, and even her beliefs have softened over time.
She was a Traditionalist back then, but is Fire Alone now. After everything. The destruction of the forest, loss of her kits, WindClan rebellion, reveal of Squirrelflight and Leafpool's secret...
She's helped to raise every new generation as the Educator. And yet, Ashfur, the Impostor, is unique.
And look at Bumblestripe... being Graystripe's son didn't stop him from being the Impostor's lackey.
We all make our choices. HE made his. You made your own.
But... I don't feel like Ferncloud can entirely accept that as an answer either. There would be a very forlorn sort of feeling here. Yes, we all make our own choices-- but we influence each other. For better and for worse. And she refuses to avoid responsibility for that.
Maybe in that moment I'll have her make the choice to return home, and BE the one who becomes the Light in the Mist to face Ashfur in the Dark Forest. Seems to be coming together.

Hey you it’s me,
Just arrived at the end of our LIKES - a 10+ year archive of things saved for interaction, interest or future use- and it has come time to empty this out. The things stored here feel like they have been waiting for us for quite awhile. The most recent years have shown us that we are not great at finishing what we start nor seeing something through to the end. I think it is safe to say that this pile of 10’000+ posts all waiting for “someday” is evidence of this. We are unplugging from this believe that we do not complete things. And it has its start here: with you, with me, let us see what we see.
-inside the archive-
Interestingly, the oldest post here is from Aug 2012 on how to make friends as an adult! A topic we needed then AND now. It has 999 notes which should be noticed ✨ it feels like a good omen that I WILL in fact become someone who completes things.
sorry to break it to you past!maria but….my own history with friendships has been a common one: strong school friendships, many deteriorated when I moved out of town/attended post secondary, new college friendships that had more spice and challenge, immaturity helped me implode some and grow with others, once again moving meant more friendships dissolved. Now I feel settled and happy in a town where I have made an intentional goal of creating my new community. My goal currently is to keep networking and finding friends near and far who want to run in life with me. I trust that lifelong friendships are coming. I trust that I am a good friend. I welcome those meant for me into my orbit.
I love the lessons shared in this post: USE FANDOM. WORK FRIENDS CAN BECOME LEGIT FRIENDS. MEET FRIENDS THRU OTHER FRIENDS. Friendship is an action words, the power of LET’S. participate in things that share your interests so you get closer to people of those same interests.
I am pretty analytical and enjoy some organization so I already had a few side blogs made for sorting through this dusty ancient content! For now what will stay in my likes will be the artists whose work I hope to one day own/commission. Like the nobles of old, patrons of the arts!
Oh here’s an interesting post: a bar/restaurant based on video games in Vancouver. Ooof I saved the post in 2012 and the establishment closed in 2018. Tragic! I suppose I should be preparing for some heartbreak as I go through this archive. Rest in pieces EXP restaurant + bar
Carrying on found me at an origami bow tie pdf! How cute. Tomorrow is my bb’s birthday so I will be making that tonight!! How apt.
Beautiful poetry is finding us quickly. Easy to be inspired into the Big Magic of collaborative creation and inspiration.
In a master post of links for "learn to" opportunities I resonated with "learn how to chart your family history". Interesting….worth investigating. But not someday! Today!!
A ton of legend of Zelda gifs in my likes. No surprise. Looking forward to my replays and being able to paint screenshots of these beautiful days!
….TBC tomorrow
