TEMPTING – VERY TEMPTING. Such an offer, but this one has slipped through her claws once before, and how others had been punished for such bold and daring actions to try and read between the lines. That was her job, her contracts were ironclad and always tilted the scales into her favor, always. She cannot be cheated, she cannot be tricked, she cannot be robbed of what she is owed and this one, well let’s just say that her interest was there and that was free for the time being, everything else afterwards .. well that was going to become costly and this little mortal was already within serious debt, no point in adding to the collector and having countless fight all over the pieces once it comes time to carve her up. “Is this a bad time darling, do you need another forty winks to get some beauty sleep.” A hand on her chest and a coy smile upon her lips, false flattery and mocking words aplenty, but it is the nature of such dealings.  She already had her claws in many little pets within the land, why on earth would she want for anymore than what she had, but then again.  A deal was a deal and a contract was almost mouth watering to cut out her useless debtors and merely go right to the person causing her so much trouble and offer them, well what everyone wants, the deal of a lifetime.  No tricks, no little back doors, just a simple deal, what she wants, in exchange for what she wants, it was truly so simple. She had the blade, a hero, a legend within the land, but how he fights and denies, time and time again, how this ought to work. “I am here, to see if you wish for more from me, your sample, is it not to your liking, and that is nothing compared to what you can have, if you only ask for it.”

"Ha ha ha", Jinx called out, feigning amusement at the joke, "I cannot contain my laughter. Ha ha ha."

Her mismatched eyes drifted over towards Mizora's large, bat-like wings. Bats had hollow bones. It allowed them to fly. They also were particularly fragile and the leathery skin, too, was something, which ought not be damaged. Jinx idly wondered whether or not Mizora would be robbed of the power of flight if she yanked just hard enough, twisted her bones by a joint and caused it to snap. Or perhaps she should take out her dagger and cut into the leathery skin that way.

The thoughts felt good like dipping your bare feet into the warm waters of a boiling spring. They coaxed a sly smile out of Jinx's lips and her tail flicked from one side to the next. Still, she forced the contemplation down. As much as she wanted to do it - and that desire burned to the point her muscles cramped -, she knew it would jeopardise Wyll's safety and hers. The tiefling could not let that happen.

Hearing Mizora ask her what she wanted, if she wanted more power, the warlock began to pace back and forth like a displacer beast in a cage, large tentacles flicking back and forth. Powder peered after her, the familiar's tail matching her tail's slow curls and flicks. Jinx closed her fingers around her chin as she thought long and hard. Finally, she stopped and looked at Mizora.

"Here is the kicker", Jinx admitted, "I am not really after more power, so I really do not know how to ask for what I want. I am more invested in what's going on in here." She tapped a clawed finger against her temple. "Not the tadpole, mind yah! I am more interested in the whole other stuff. All these images and intrusive thoughts... I do not wanna get rid of them. But I do wanna understand them better. I think in the past, I specifically chose to become a ranger to understand what goes on in my head, but it didn't lead to the result, I wanted. Hunting game in the woods and even hunting people is different than the way people are, well, diabolical. Soooo, do you think you can help me on that front? Or is that out of a devil's skill book?"

Random note, Jinx, BG3 verse

Jinx is a Bhaalspawn, she looks like an air genasi, but in reality is actually a fire genasi.

I hope you do not mind me posting your comment in a separate post as I have a bit to talk about, and that way, I have the advantage of no sudden word limits cutting me off.

First of all, people have to remember, that I am still fairly early in my playthrough, and while I know certain things already about the Dark Urge storyline, I only know bits and pieces. I do not yet have the full picture. However, even if I had the full picture, there may be a chance that I am doing this regardless. I like giving canonical characters and sometimes even the world or their relationships my own flavour. Seriously, look at my worldbuilding for Zaun and you get what I mean.

Anyhow, onto the whole drow and Bhaal stuff. To understand what my idea was here, you have to understand that when I chose to make Jinx's BG3 verse and designed her as my avatar for my playthrough, I tried to draw as much from who she is in Arcane. I did not even try to make Jinx look exactly like Arcane Jinx because that is just impossible.

As you can clearly see here, Jinx's original aesthetic would hardly map completely onto BG3's aesthetic. So, I decided that while I gave clear nods towards Jinx's appearance like her blue hair or her demonic purple and demonic blue eyes, what was more important was capturing the spirit of her character in her design. Ergo more, who is she as a person versus what does she look like.

This is for instance why Jinx is a thiefling instead of a human or elf. From what I heard of the race, they are outcast, but also associated with evil and trickery. And in my opinion, Jinx is an almost tragic spin on a trickster and malevolent character. Other things, I included are nods to the people, she canonically holds dear, wherever I could. Everybody with two working brain cells, who saw Arcane, can tell that Jinx's heterochromatic eyes are a nod towards Silco as is her tattoo, which in my brain is almost like Shimmer leaking out of her eyes. Her horn's red tips are a nod towards Vi.

Anyway, back to your question: How the heck does any of this tie to Bhaal appearing as a drow for Jinx instead of his apparent human shape?

The short answer is: I decided to give Jinx pre-brain damage and tadpole situation a dynamic with Bhaal which is very similar to Silco and her in canon. So I was like "If I go with the whole Silco = Bhaal analogy, why not go all out?" And well, if you look at Silco's appearance, I felt a drow would make the most sense for Bhaal's chosen form.

You see my point, right?

I also thought a lot about how Jinx interprets what "Father of Murder" means or more specifically what murder is. And well, if you look at the definition of the word murder, the topic of intention is very crucial to differentiate it from manslaughter. So, I felt that for Jinx, intention would be a very important element in how she unleashed her dark urge in the past. It is about setting up a kill and the whole chase element of it. Girly ain't a hound, in this case, she is a hunter.

And I was like Okay, what would be easier for a god. Trying to brute force her into a completely different path or you know, taking the path she already is on, and speeding it up. I chose to interpret Bhaal as taking the shape of a drow for Jinx as a nod to Silco, but also because she is very receptive to wanting to make a parental figure proud in her own unique ways. In a way, Bhaal is fitting himself around Jinx's interpretation of who he is. Is he still the quote-on-quote "Father of Murder"? Yes. Did Jinx choose to take that more literally? Also, yes. Does Bhaal choose to play into this because it enables him to control Jinx more easily? Yes.

In my eyes, Bhaal would be scarier if he could accommodate multiple interpretations of the word murder and not just one. And that is exactly what he is doing with Jinx.

BG3 Verse: "How pathetic are you that you cannot even beat me at my worst?!"

AN: I am still in my first-ever playthrough of BG3, so this verse is currently also a massive work in progress. I already know a few minor or also major spoilers concerning the Dark Urge, but even so, please tread lightly with spoilers around me for a while.

A thiefling Beastmaster ranger, Jinx remembers little from her life before she was trapped on the Nautiloid and had a parasite planted into her brain. Now, travelling towards Baldur's Gate with a group of misfits, who have suffered the same fate as her, she is trying to remove the parasite in her skull.

All the while, Jinx struggles with a dark urge, which makes her fantasise about committing violence, fascinated by death, and more than willing to bend the rules and people to get things to go her way. Even though Jinx is doing her hardest to keep herself in check, once every while, it seems something other than the parasite takes possession of her and compels her to do unspeakable things.

A few small headcanons, I made up, based on what I already know:

Jinx's main animal companion is a large wolf, whom she has named Warwick. Her spiritual companion tends to be a small rat or a cat. Jinx hand-reared Warwick from puppy to fully grown wolf and has made sure, he has an appetite for a plethora of creatures to hunt.

Jinx's dark urge, outside of intrusive thoughts and fantasies, specifically manifests itself in the form of hallucinations. These hallucinations can be auditory or visual. Visually, Jinx tends to see two boys, one long and lanky, the other one round and soft. These boys actually appear as corpses. Mylo, the thin lanky one, has several arrows penetrating his chest near his shoulder, while Claggor has a clearly snapped neck. These two ghosts - Jinx's first human kills as an archer - tend to taunt Jinx to commit more atrocities.

Jinx specifically became an archer/beastmaster as that created a natural outlet for her dark urge. Furthermore, Jinx felt she could understand it better by understanding animals better. However, that does not mean that Jinx is somehow a saint or a good person. Outside of being a skilled and lethal hunter, Jinx swiftly developed an interest in hunting humans like they were animals. It was how, in her eyes, she honoured Bhaal. No temple or weird sacrifices were needed. For Jinx, she saw the act of killing as what mattered. She saw the intent of murder as what mattered and not whatever you did with the corpse afterwards.

This was also a reason Orin and Jinx regularly butted heads. Not only was Orin jealous of the favouritism, but she also felt Jinx did not deserve Bhaal's favour because of how she was conducting herself. She regarded being a ranger as a waste of a Bhaalspawn's gifts.

She narrows her eyes at them, sizing up the other for a moment before relenting. Barrae was used to helping others, her entire life was devoted to helping a Goddess with her grand ideal for her people and worshipers. Yet it was that very help she was used to offering that Barrae viewed as being weak. This one was not like the others. Good. Respect was something to be earned and not only was the other strong enough to hold their tone and voice during their declaration but the fact they said such things to begin with. . . it left am impression on the drow cleric. " Good. It means less effort must be wasted on those who don't truly need it. Get moving, unless you have some other qualm with me to settle. "

This was the second drow, Jinx had laid eyes on in a short while. That alone was noteworthy as drows were not known for leaving the Underdark that often. Known for their cruelty and efficiency, most other species of Faerun naturally avoided the drow like prey avoided an apex predator. However, Jinx wasn't like most other species.

Even back when she had wandered into the goblin's camp, masquerading as a drow to scout around, thank you, Gale, she had already made it more than clear that she was out for trouble. One of the goblins, who had been particularly loud and abrasive, claiming that because the Absolute had blessed them and thus they were now on top of the food chain, had quickly been pushed down a peg.

Jinx had clamped her teeth around one of his gnarly-smelling toes and bit it clean off. It had smelled of garlic, sweat and grease, and had hardly been worth a potential swallow. Jinx spit it back into her hand, mockingly smiling as the goblin yowled and cursed her, holding his wounded foot. Her abrasive behaviour meant that nowadays most goblins avoided her a bit - though, they already labelled Jinx as a menace.

"Who says that we must quarrel?" Jinx did not even flinch as Shadowheart treaded a needle through her wounded flesh - that freshly born gnoll had gotten her good. "You are the one, who is approaching me here. Though I gotta admit: It's been a while since I last saw a drow in the surface world. What brings you here?"

Wyll was sitting on the beach, staring the waves as they crashed when he heart soft footsteps from behind him. He would recognize those footsteps anywhere, in fact he knew what they everyone’s footsteps sounded like, thanks to his time with the party. These were softer footsteps, almost playful and that only meant one person. He couldn’t help but smile with relief. Jinx had agreed to meet with him after all.

“Thank you for joining me here, Jinx.” He glanced over with his lone infernal eye, a hint of his fangs peeking through as he smiled her direction. “I was beginning to think I would be spending the evening by myself, contemplating over the crashing of waves.”

Admittedly the warlock found the other to be good company, welcoming in fact. From the start Jinx had been nothing but kind to him, but now there was something else connecting them, Mizora. Of course he had been furious that both had kept it from him, but that didn’t change how comforting either presence was. “I’ve been hoping to speak to you privately since I found out about your pact with Mizora.” @faerunscursed

The rest of the camp had settled into uneasy slumber. Jinx and Wyll were the only ones away, having agreed to take the first night watch each. And while the thiefling usually would have been on the other side of camp now, Wyll had murmured that he had to urgently speak with her. Preferably when the others were asleep.

Her boots left dark imprints on the sand as Jinx stepped down the shore. Wyll squatted on the ground and stared intensely into the waves. Only as the thiefling stepped closer, did the other warlock turn his head to look at her. His twisting horns were long and gnarly, yet Jinx felt they looked exceptionally beautiful. As that infernal eye locked with her own heterochromia, Jinx smiled in greeting and settled down in the sand beside him.

Ever since they had successfully defended the emerald grove - particularly after Mizora had sharply reminded her that if she didn't do it, the Cambion would make her -, the pale purple thiefling with her long, cobalt blue hair had begun to don the revealing, sleek, leather clothing, which the drow Mizora had worn during her attack. Jinx had even taken her magical armour for herself.

"Of course, Wyll."

Jinx sat down and looped her tail prim and proper around herself like a cat's. Hugging her knees, the warlock smiled mischievously and teased: "I am sure hearing the waves would have been wonderfully soothing. Are you sure you are a warlock and not a bard? After all, this could have been a nice atmosphere to write poetry in."

Her tail flicked in surprise as Wyll remarked about the one thing, Jinx had done her hardest to keep quiet. She tapped her thumbs against her shins. Jinx hummed low and peered around as if she had to be certain that they were alone.

Then she leaned over towards Wyll and whispered: "I shan't deny that she is my patron as much as she is yours. I am not going to ask you how you know of this. Maybe Mizora told you. Maybe you figured it out of your own accord. I do not know and I do not care. However, I presume you have something to say about the matter. So spit it out."

Unlike the rest of the party, who was sleeping soundly, Karlach had been wide awake. Nightmares, they plagued her every being when she wasn't awake. Sometimes they even followed her then, in the forms of visions that Zariel would throw her way. There was no true reprieve from this but she didn't want to risk the rest of the party knowing of her affliction, not yet. As such she ventured out to allow a moment to herself. The tiefling was about to set loose her fire to let off steam when she spotted the dead gnoll. Karlach knew at first look that there was something more to it. In fact, she knew a killer when she saw one, because she was one herself. Only her victims were typically imps, cambian's, and other hellish creatures. Granted, gnoll didn't differ much from that lot. Just mindless creatures slaughtering innocents for a source of meat. A spare few even served the absolute. "You're lucky it was me that found you here, could you imagine gale finding you? Stars he'd flip his shit." Karlach sighed and shook her head as she approached. She tapped the gnoll with her foot to check if it was dead. "You killed it without mercy, didn't you? Bastard didn't stand a chance." She turned her attention to the other tiefling, studying her. This was no accident but Karlach wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, she deserved that much right? "I know that look in your eye, you meant to kill it didn't you? Like I did in--" She stopped there, not wanting to reveal her history in Avernus. Karlach took a deep breath, "Nevermind, let's clean this body up. You're right, everyone would properly go nuts. Except maybe fang boy over there..." The infernal tiefling immediately picked up the gnoll as if it was nothing and slung it over her shoulders. "I'll dispose of this but afterwards I expect you to tell me why he was really here, yeah?"

The dim light of the moon reflected itself in their demonic eyes. Even though tieflings were not imps or cambions, their hellish ancestors were clearly visible in their unnatural eye colours, the long, thick tails and their horns, ranging from those of goats to rams to gazelles. However, even in that distinct light, Jinx could see certain differences in Karlach's appearance. Her horn was bulkier and heavier in design, curved crudely against the side of her temple. The end of her tail was covered in strange, ashen-coloured plates and the tip of her tail ended in a sharp arrow point.

Jinx steadied herself for needing to defend her decision to slaughter the gnoll. However, when Karlach remarked that Jinx should be lucky that she had found her as opposed to Gale for instance, the tiefling could not help but release an unsteady laugh. Jinx said: "You are right. He would absolutely lose it."

Her gaze wandered down to the gnoll as Karlach poked it with her foot. The creature's head flicked sideways before it flopped back down. The gnoll's eyes were blank and broken, its teeth born in a snarl and blood trickled down the corner of his jaw where a bolt had caught its maw. Jinx chose not to reply to Karlach's remark on the merciless kill. Her work spoke for itself. It was a crude, yet beautiful display of violence, all things considered.

Jinx merely said as Karlach pointed out that it seemed she had meant to kill it: "Does it matter? It's a gnoll. You would have done the same thing." The thiefling nodded at Karlach in a silent expression of thanks. Something in her told her that usually, she would have just chosen to keep the carcass out in the open, but much like her experiences with Alfira, Jinx had learned to hide her carnage, now that she was travelling with others.

Heading back to camp, Jinx fed the dimmed-down fire a few more branches to make it blazingly fierce. She pulled out a piece of cloth and used that to rudimentarily clean her hands of the blood, sticking to her skin. Waiting for Karlach to return, Jinx looked up at the approaching tiefling and said:

"1011 pounds. That's the bite force of a spotted hyena. That's enough to crush and eat bones. That's why gnolls and spotted hyenas have white, corny poo poo. It is the undigestable part of the bones. I don't know how that gnoll found our camp. But I know enough about them to not give them the chance to figure out we are an easy kill. If only one gnoll figures out they can sneak into our camp and drag one of us into the night to devour in peace, the next night, they will be accompanied by four more."

Something, I am also debating in regards to BG3, is if I just wanna make a BG3 verse for Jinx and say she looks like how I made her in BG3 as the Dark Urge. That could also work, though obviously, it would not be the same as having a whole separate character from that universe.

So, I just found this cover version of "Get Jinxed", and while it obviously fits with Jinx in her Default verse, I distinctly feel like this version with its lower notes, the almost bestial screams at the end and the slower pace of the instrumental, somehow really fits for Jinx's Bg3 verse. (Which I probably have to rework.) Especially the refrain of "Get Jinxed" works as the core of her character too.

I played some more Baldur's Gate 3. Outside of finally using a long rest for the first time, my whole playthrough this time was focused on exploring the old ruins and finding Withers. I failed so far and instead found a whole passageway in and out of the entire ruin.

I also chose to make Astarion the designated locksmith boy and basically always control him, the moment we are in front of a locked door. So far, he cracked everything. I might not be too bad with that either, but hey, if Astarion has more affinity for it, might as well use him.

Jinx as a ranger can summon an animal familiar. I had used the rat so far, but this time, I went with the cat. Not only is the cat far easier to spot, but because I can control the cat, I made the furball my designated scout. That way if I get into a room and a fight breaks out, the kitty gets hit first. But also, I adore the cat's model. She looks very wild and fluffy. I now also think that for her BG3 verse, Jinx uses a wolf and a cat.

We also fought a bunch of bandits in a corridor. I have to be more careful with area of effect damage. Because Jinx, Astarion and Gale, for a while, all stood in a burning spot, I had to get them all out of there. Shadowheart meanwhile had to play medic for my dumbass.

I finally discovered how to do long rest. I also noticed the approval ratings of my companions. So far, everybody is neutral. Gale has a one beside his, Astarion a zero and Shadowheart an eighteen. Jinx also briefly pissed off Gale because she entered his mind without his permission. She did apologise. But yeah, whoops.
