Open to the public since 2004, this marvellous memorial to the late Princess of Wales (mother Princes William and Harry) is a beautifully designed and aesthetically impressive loop of water that’s terrific for all visitors, but especially young ones to play in, dabbling their feet in the water, should the day in be warm enough, no doubt. Welling up at its tallest point, the water in the fountain, then flows down in two different directions, passing over ridges and cascades and through bubbling jets, then finally it comes together again in a calm pool at the bottom. 

Kensington Palace

Finally, at the northern end of Kensington Gardens, beyond the brilliant bronze Peter Pan statue and the charming Round Pond, lies Kensington Palace. Built by the legendary architect Sir Christopher Wren and first inhabited in 1689, the lavishly adorned Royal palace was once home to both Princess Margret and Diana, Princess of Wales and, currently, is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children. Nowadays, too, it serves a terrific tourist attraction, not least for visitors booked into Hyde Park hotels near Kensington Palace.

With impressive and hugely popular exhibitions often held in the palace’s galleries – usually featuring clothes and artworks worn and owned by British royals through the ages – other galleries are also to the public, such as those created for King William III and the apartments of King George I and Queen Victoria.

The cathedral has been witness to two world wars, many battles, and more monarchs that we can count. It’s steeped in history and is an absolute must-see to anyone visiting London for a day. 4. The Tower of London 

For bloody tales and a glimpse at the Crown Jewels, make sure you visit the Tower of London. It is a sight behold amid the modern buildings that surround it, but from 1078 onwards, this has been a royal fortress tasked with protecting London and the reigning monarch. The lively tour guides put on an excellent performance and are brimming with knowledge on the gruesome history of the castle, and you can see the world-famous ravens who have been at the tower for hundreds of years. 

5. Oxford Street 

For something a bit more laid back and modern, hit up Oxford Street, London’s shopping hub. There are over 300 shops for you to peruse, not to mention the multiple restaurants and pubs that also line this famous street. If you’re looking to get a souvenir or simply indulge in some retail therapy after a busy day of sightseeing, this is the place to go.
