A La Mort Subite, Brussels
To Sudden Death- one of my favourite bars in the world! I hadn't been in here for 20 or so years. Great memories. It hadn't changed...well apart from it appeared to have shrunk. Maybe I'd grown!

As a self-proclaimed beer fan, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to finally visit the beloved Monk’s Café. In my defense, when I lived in Philly during college, I a.) didn’t have a ton of money, and b.) wasn’t much of a beer snob as my older friends introduced us to cocktails first. Since then, we usually follow my BIL’s lead as he lives in city, and for whatever reason we never would end up here.
Better late than never, I guess!
Walking in feels a bit like a labyrinth as you go through a few doors, and then you enter the front dining area. The bar will likely be full, but don’t despair; a walk past pews-as-booths will take you to the back bar! We were able to grab the last two stools there, for which I was grateful, even if it was a bit snug. What’s nice is that you can order beers from either the front bar or the back bar, which is really nice!
Monk’s food--mainly a pub-ish take on Belgian classics, like moules frites--is pretty damn phenomenal. We were having a later lunch and we had an early dinner reservation, so I didn’t want to go crazy, so I found myself opting for their veggie burger (made with discernable vegetables!) topped with cheddar and bacon. On the side came a little serving of Monk’s house-made bourbon mayo and their frites, both which were perfect. The next time we’re in the city, I’m going to request to make a stop here just to get some of their delicious frites with bourbon mayo since it’s pretty close to other spots we like to go to in the Center City area.

Bois Cereste, Akasaka, Tokyo, 2024.
A specialty Belgian beer bar operated by Mr. Yamada, who is also a jazz musician. The 36-year old cafe was a favorite of renowned beer writer Michael Jackson, pictured here with the proprietor Mr. Yamada. The cafe menu contains hundreds of rare selections, many imported from Belgium directly by Mr. Yamada himself. Bois Cereste is a rare treasure in the Tokyo beer cafe landscape.

My kiddo has lived near Silly, Belgium for five years now but though he’s a beer lover, he’s never visited the brewery or the cafe. Inconceivable! On our last visit, a couple of years ago, I said I wanted to go there. He said we’d go to the restaurant nearby. Yeah that wasn’t good so today we stopped in at the cafe owned by the brewery. It reminded me of an English pub but with Belgian beer. Win win!
A few locals sat at the bar when we walked in. G speaks enough French so we are always given respectable service. I had Silly’s Scotch ale and Tripel, which they spell triple oddly enough and D and I both ordered chips thinking we’d get French fries. lol we each got a packet of crisps so when I got back I decided to try the sardines I’d purchased at Porto. Tres bien!

An imbiber’s guide to the 2023 Hard Liver Barleywine Festival, at Brouwer's Cafe.
Depending on whom you speak to, the word is pronounced "barleywine" or "barley wine". While others, mostly friend will crown it with the word Ale. As in Barleywine Ale. Frankly, we think the term is redundant as there aren't any Stout Ales or Saison Ales in the world. But however you pronounce it, the word should be added to your frontal cortex of words to utter in February and March. Right up there with snow, accumulation, and taxes.
In other words, it's another year for barleywines in large quantiles at nearby alehouses!
Tumblr media
image sourced from Brouwer’s Cafe
Which is why we are reminding you about Brouwer's Cafe and their Hard Liver Barleywine Festival. Oh, and here’s Brouwer’s Cafe’s version of a pep talk!
The Hardliver Barleywine festival is now old enough to drink itself! That’s right, this is our 21st Hardliver!! Originally held at the Phinney Center in 2003, it was moved to Brouwer’s Café for our grand opening on St Paddy’s weekend in 2005 (whoa what a party that was!).
Whether you’re a hardcore Hardliver attendee or you haven’t been in a decade; whether you’re a barleywine aficionado or just started your exploration of beer; we invite you to join us for the 21st Hardliver Barleywine Festival on February 25th & 26th 2023.
Recognizing this Belgian-inspired (and Belgian-owned) spot in Fremont is celebrating their 21st Hard Liver, the spot is serving up some 30+ barleywines, some squirreled away for years, others just recently birthed by the breweries that are taking part. With styles ranging from the classic, stainless steel aged to the organic barrel-aged, there is a wide-berth of beers to see and try!
So we thought, rather than just copy-paste a bulleted list from here, why not do something original and inviting? Which is why we reached out the breweries and with (most of their permissions) we sourced images, description, and of course alcohol by volume, to give you a complete breakdown of what's featured Brouwer's Cafe! Notably, there were some who had better things to do, like stay in business, than respond with less than 3 days notice. But to be fair, we weren't given much notice either!
How's this broken down?
Starting with vintage, we have listed every beer at Brouwer's Cafe that is more than a few years old in the Vintage section. Then, as the 'Cafe likes to organize their menus, we are breaking the younger barleywines down by state (or region if there is only one). Naturally, we encourage you to select the logo, if you want a deeper dive into the beer, including a reference to (most of) the breweries.
And, that's it!
No, best of the list. No, our picks! Just scroll, select, select back button (or the helpful text within the profile), and be responsible in your drink choices and how you get home! Oh, and if you need some food, psssst, https://bit.ly/3syjKiZ.
Have a fun Hard Liver Barleywine Festival and congrats to Brouwer's Cafe on their 21st edition of this unique event!
Unfortunately,Unfortunately,Unfortunately, all the good stuff is over on our website! We suggest you go there! And yeah, we know it’s idiotic to share an article from our website here and not include everything. But Tumblr isn’t up to hosting our domain code.

BY ANTWERPEN CENTRAAL STATION I SAT DOWN AND WEPT
Fed up standing in airport queues and flying with our cumbersome luggage, we decided to take a morning train and an afternoon train to Paris, prolonging the travel time but allowing for a beer in Antwerp. After getting ushered out of the first class carriage for not having the right ticket (this was true) we cumbered out of economy onto the platform of Antwerp Central around midday.
The station, by the way, is probably the grandest station I’ve ever trodden through. A torrent of glass and iron forms a ceiling that cascades down to the platforms. A sequence of escalators take you upwards out of the bowles and towards the entrance hall. In the foreground of this view stands an opulent structure made up of viaduct-like archway and parapet that is split in twain by an ornate clock. Behind this looms a vast semi circle window which forms the northern side of the building, redolent of a cathedral’s rose window. In this light the clock structure brood alter-like, with minutes, arrivals, and departures preaching to the converted below (I was not surprised to learn the station is known colloquially as the spoorwegkathedraal (railroad cathedral)). We piously moved through the concourse and out into Antwerp. Very much was I excited by the antipodean novelty of stopping to have smoko in one country before going to the next, however upon exiting the station and being drenched in the mid summer Belgian sun I was saddened to not be spending more time there. Moving through the energetic streets like sherpas with our ugly and overweight luggage on back, our Antwerpen escapade made it as far as Bier Central, an estaminet about 100 metres from Antwerpen Centraal Station.
The cafe gloats a selection of over 300 beers which were all documented assiduously within the many pages of the menu, each with a description and bespoke glass. I chose a pint of Cuvée des Trolls, half because of it’s description as a full yet refreshing lager, and half because of the little cheeky troll with a hop for a hat and red face that is drawn on the glass. The beer was served by a buoyant fella who was proud to see the various selection of local beers we’d chosen. My beer was mmmmmm my beer was crisp and invigorating and fucked my dusty throat. Promptly the tulip’s opalescent content was absorbed and I called for another. I wanted to stay there all afternoon, I wanted to drink ten of these tonics, I wanted to turn into the machiavellian troll on my glass and run amok. Alas, our train to Paris was suddenly half an hour away and we slouched back to church.

Beer and food pairing is an art, and Belgian beer is no different. And It’s critical to consider the flavour profiles of both the beer and the meal when combining Belgian beer and food. Here are some suggestions for combining Belgian beer and food:
Belgian Dubbel: This beer goes well with substantial, fatty foods like braised meats, strong cheeses, and stews.
Belgian Tripel: This beer goes well with grilled meats, seafood, and spicy foods.
Belgian Saison: This beer goes nicely with salads, seafood, and grilled vegetables, among other light fare.
Belgian witbier: This beer goes well with salads, seafood, and grilled chicken, among other light fare.
The intensity of the flavours should also be taken into account when combining beer with food. A Belgian Witbier, for instance, would go well with a light, zingy salad. Whereas a Belgian Dubbel, which is heavier, would go well with a deep, meaty stew.
Advice on How to Match Belgian Beer with Food
Here are some more suggestions for combining Belgian beer with food:
Have a look at the ingredients: Coriander, orange peel, and candy sugar are just a few of the unusual ingredients included in many Belgian beers. When selecting a cuisine to accompany beer, take into account the ingredients in the beer.
Match intensity: Serve foods with a similar level of flavour intensity to the beer. While a heavy beer would go well with a rich, delicious dish. A light beer would go well with a light dish.
Try different combinations without being afraid to experiment! You might discover a new combination that you like.
The best way to learn more about Belgian beer and discover new flavours is to attend tastings for this beverage. Since a variety of beers and food pairings are offered at the events, you will have the opportunity to try a variety of different beers and learn more about their special characteristics and flavour profiles. If you are a beer lover visiting Dubai, you should try the Saturday brunch and bistro bar experiences at a Belgian Beer Cafe. It is important to consider the flavour profiles of both the food and the beer. And most importantly, you should not be averse to experimenting with new flavours and combinations.

Leuven - 1: Bars, Cafes and Restaurants for eating and drinking
On a March 2024 visit we enjoyed good value meals at the following establishments:
De Werf
Tumblr media
Note De Werf is in a student residential area and is closed on Saturday and Sunday nights when many students are away.
It is at the top corner of Hoogeschoolplein and has tables and chairs outside when they are not packed away for the weekend.
Tumblr media
There is Stella Artois on draught and a good range of bottled Belgian beers. The food menu features wraps, pasta dishes, salads and chowders (bowls) with plenty of vegetarian options.
Tumblr media
Tim's regular dish here is penne with meatballs and Provencale sauce. (13.80 euros). Don't expect a gastronomic treat but portions are large and tasty!
Tumblr media
The interior decor finishes are rough and ready with many quirky items as decoration. You probably won't find a cheaper restaurant and you may be the oldest customers but there's a nice atmosphere, service is good and there's no pressure to vacate tables quickly.
Habibi
Habibi is a small Palestinian restaurant at 128 Diestsestraat, the smaller street that runs almost parallel to Bondgenotenlaan from Leuven station towards the centre. It's closed on Sundays and closes at 9.30pm or earlier on opening days.
Tumblr media
We left it quite late on a Saturday night but were lucky to be able to get a table without a booking as some customers were just leaving.
Inside there is a friendly atmosphere and it is quite brightly lit. The walls are ochre coloured and there are plants for a green touch.
Tumblr media
Tim's choice of the mixed kebab dish is popular and includes skewered chicken, lamb and beef. Together with Meg's Falafel burger with fries and the Fattoush (salad) with pita chips and a small plate of thin flatbread and two beers, our bill came to 44.40 euros.
Tumblr media
The limited beer range at Habibi includes Steenbrugge Blonde and Wit bottled beers.
Het Strand
Tumblr media
Het Strand is hidden away up some steps in a new development at the corner of Tiensestraat and Andre Versaliusstraat, near Cinema Zed - Versalius.
Tumblr media
It's worth finding as the vegetarian menu includes a wide variety of dishes and it also has a long bar with a good range of beers. The large contemporary space has columns, many windows and green plants.
Tumblr media
It's open until late every night but closed on Mondays. There are five beers on tap and a good range of over 20 Belgian bottled beers including several from Brussels Beer Project.
Tumblr media
Although it's quite brightly lit, there's a relaxing alternative feel about the place.
Tumblr media
Tim appreciated the Taiwanese noodle soup dish with mushrooms, Chinese leaf, beansprouts and spring onion. (16.5 euros).
Ah Quy
Although not visited on this trip, Ah Quy at Alfons Smetsplein 4 was remembered as offering a good value quick Vietnamese meal.

My tumblr friend @russann asked me to recommend a couple of places in Bruges that would be on my not to miss list. Bruges is my favorite city in the world with London a close second.
The top pic is De Garre. It's a very old pub down an alley just off the Market Square. Their tripel golden ale is served with a bowl of wonderful cheese cubes. It's very small but has three levels. I don't recommend the steep narrow stairs unless you do them below you're drunk!
Below that is De Halve Maan. It's a brewer/restaurant and their Straffe Henrik tripel is the closest thing I have to a favorite beer. Great food and ambiance inside.
Cafe Vlissinghe is reported to maybe be the oldest pub in Europe or at least in Bruges. It's pretty magical inside with great food and a wonderful beer selection.
The beer Museum and Duvelorium are collocated on the square at the corner of the road you take to find De Garre. Having these places so close together isn't as great as you might think. The beer is so delicious but also so strong you (I) can't go from one to the other drinking or I'd soon be bloody legless! The beer museum is nice because for a reasonable fee you get to drink small glasses of the many beers they have on tap. The Duvelorium is mostly Duvel beer but the best thing is they have a large balcony over-looking the market square so you can drink and people watch in the shadow of the clock belfry.
Another very cool place is LaTrappiste. It's down under the street and the rooms are huge stone arched vaults.
I highly recommend a meal at The Pigeon House. You don't have to get pigeon but you really should, it's delicious.
There's lots of great shopping. The best liquor store ever is 2be! Also if your want to get friends and family some chocolate genitalia, Bruges is the place. They have tons of other chocolates and of course Belgian lace if your want a PG rated keepsake.
There's so many more cool places we've found while there but half the fun is just wandering and finding. Have fun!
