US Congress passes landmark Bill in support of Tibet, Dalai Lama
Tumblr media
In a historic achievement for the Tibetan government-in-exile, the US Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act (TPSA) of 2020 that had been stuck at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since May.
Describing as a historic decision, Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) President Lobsang Sangay, who is currently in Washington, told IANS over phone that the Tibetan Policy and Support Act makes it official the US policy that decisions regarding the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama are exclusively within the authority of the current Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhist leaders and the Tibetan people.
“Any interference by Chinese government officials will be met with serious sanctions and be deemed inadmissible into the United States,” he said.
The TPSA was part of the appropriation Bill that was debated and passed.

‘Swami Vivekananda galvanised a somnambulant continent into a new awakening’
Tumblr media
Swami Vivekananda held that religious truths are verifiable by the experimental method as are scientific truths as they were also predicated by experience except that they could not be measured in a laboratory and thanks to him, have now become the hallmarks of our religious life and discourse; indeed stirring a “somnambulant continent into a new awakening”, says a new book on the “modern monk” in “flaming robes”.
“Just as scientific truths are verifiable by the experimental method, Vivekananda claimed so are religious truths. Empiricism and rationalism…were the foundational principles of modern science. Vivekananda wanted to do something similar to religion; he wanted empiricism and rationalism to also underwrite religious truths and beliefs” – and succeeded, writes Makarand R. Paranjape in the extensively researched “Swami Vivekananda – Hindusim and India’s Road to Modernity” (Harper Collins).
“To him, religious facts were also predicated upon experience, except that such experience could not be measured in a laboratory. Rather, it had to be measured in the laboratory of the spirit. In this sense, he was different from his predecessors, who were much more bound by tradition and scriptural authority,” writes, Paranjape, the Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.
It is because of “inspiring” leaders like Vivekananda that rationality, verifiability and experience “have become the hallmarks of our religious life and discourse. Vivekananda endorses rationality but does not make it the supreme epistemological principle. Rather, rationality gets mediated, moderated and in a sense, re-placed in the order of things, placed below gnosis or higher (re)-cognition of our identity with the supreme consciousness,” Paranjape writes.

Reading amid the pandemic: Books and authors in 2020
Tumblr media
With a microscopic organism upending life as we know it, the realm of books was among the few which held its own, operating near normally in this tumultuous year. The flow of new titles, across all genres, continued unabated and provided readers a safe haven for a troubled psyche. For avid readers, confined to homes and deprived of opportunities of external sources of leisure, it was a dream opportunity to work through pending piles and acquire fresh material.
But amid the host of autobiographies and biographies, examinations of political partisanship – and their social effects, new looks at history and more as well as a wide array of fiction for all tastes and moods, the worst health crisis the world faced in over a century found its own niche.
While there is no shortage of books on coronavirus, some representative ones could include physician and evolutionary biologist Frank Ryan’s “Virusphere: Ebola, AIDS, Influenza and the Hidden World of the Virus”, which explains why epidemics are inevitable and their benefits, science journalist Sonia Shah’s “Pandemic” about the interplay of history, politics and science in tackling the scourge of disease, and John Barry’s “The Great Influenza : The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History”, which not only chronicles how the Spanish flu of 1918-20 devastated a world already laid low by years of war, revolutions and other upheavals, but also shows how the political handling is as important as the medical measures.

TV star Nia Sharma wins Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India
Tumblr media
TV star Nia Sharma has won Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India, beating Jasmin Bhasin and Karan Wahi in the final. The contest was a special edition of the reality TV adventure game show and it was launched earlier this month after season 10 of Khatron Ke Khiladi concluded.
The Rohit Shetty-hosted Made In India edition of Khatron Ke Khiladi featured champions of past seasons such as Jay Bhanushali, Rithvik Dhanjani, Bharti Singh, Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Aly Goni and Karan Patel. Dhanjani had to quit the contest midway because of commitments.
“Khatron Ke Khiladi: Made In India started off as a fun special edition, but it quickly became my sole agenda to win the season. I gave my all to every stunt that I performed on the show,” said Nia, who has earlier contested in Khatron Ke Khiladi season eight.
The season witnessed the host and action filmmaker Rohit Shetty design some incredible stunts for the contestants. Nia overcame challenges that involved conquering heights, negotiating explosions, swimming through mud and, in one round, surviving a watery coffin. She also made a mark on the Colors channel show with her camaraderie with co-contestants, especially comedian Harsh Limbachiyaa.
