Sometimes we make serious, political flags. Other times we make fun flags that make the grandkids smile. 💛 ————————————— Photo by an Etsy customer. ————————————— #seattleflagmakers #etsyshop #rubberducky #rubberduckyflag #boatingflag #boatingwithkids #boatinglife #boatingseason #flags #customflags #madeinseattle https://www.instagram.com/p/CDhDw47A_az/?igshid=9sulqgcxahqr

August 21, 2015- Back to Civilization
I was preparing lunch just after we anchored in Blunden Harbour when Mark said, “let’s go.” “sure I said, where?” “Somewhere else. I’ve seen enough magnificent shell beaches and cedars dipped in the water. I want to know where people live out here.” I started laughing. “Ok”, I said, “Let’s find some civilization tomorrow but did you know that this used to be a major village site for the First Nations?” This conversation led us to Sullivan Bay, a floating “village” complete with a marina, gas station, general store, boat repair shed, restaurant, laundromat, and three “roads” aka docks for the seasonal residents. We watched one of the residents land their helicopter on the deck of their house and another had their float plane tied up to their patio; it was Mark’s kind of place. He feels he has a new goal to work towards. Tamsyn apparently also felt inspired as she took her first couple of steps! Unfortunately, Oriana and I didn’t experience any epiphanies.
As this trip is being sponsored by Flex Fold Traps (and maybe due to his new inspiration), Mark got down to business and chatted with a number of the boaters about his traps and had a chance to provide some demos. It was also an opportunity to talk to some that had already had his traps including one guy who had one of the originals made in our basement! After dinner, we decided to walk the docks to get some exercise and had a chance to watch a bear cub scavenge the beach for its dinner. It seemed totally unfazed by the cruiser paparazzi that was chronicling its every move.
Although the water at Sullivan was not potable, it was plentiful and our chance to give the girls a bath and not be freaking out about our water consumption. Oriana chose that they would bath in the tub on the dock. With our rubbermaid tub and soap in hand we created a lovely dock side bubble bath that had everyone smiling and running for their cameras. There aren’t many kids around so the girls tend to get a lot of attention no matter what they do.
Having a douce of civilization, Mark was eager to “get fishing” as Oriana says. With fishing intel from the Sullivan Marina manager, Chris we headed over to Turnbull Cove. Once anchored, Mark and Oriana began to prepare the crab and prawn traps and buzzed around setting them. Oriana is learning to drive the dinghy so there is a lot of doughnuts and top speed involved. While we were waiting for our catch I made up Pizza dough for a Venison Pepperoni pizza and Mark whipped up a beautiful loaf of bread. The crab situation was similar to what we’ve seen elsewhere, tons of females and no males, so we were glad that we had a plan B for dinner.
The following day we took a hike to Huaskin Lake which has a trail well maintained by the Ministry of Forests. This is definitely bear country so Mark made sure we were prepared. I carried bear bells, bear spray and a gun and he packed Tamsyn. We didn’t see any bears (go figure with all the noise we made) but there was some scat that confirmed that they were in the area. The lake was beautiful; If I was a bear, I’d want to live there too. What an ideal location; clams and seafood on one side and a gorgeous fresh lake on the other side with tons of salal and huckleberries on the walk between.
In our “let’s get back to civilization" moment we had also chatted to our friend Sylvie and suggested she come for a visit and that we could meet her at Echo Bay on Gilford Island as they have scheduled float plane arrivals. Communicating through our satellite communicator all got coordinated and we started heading toward our rendezvous spot.
On our way out of the Cove we pulled the prawn traps and had enough for a great curried prawn dinner. The traps also had a ton of squat lobsters that were interesting to look at, that we threw back.
On route to Echo Bay we overnighted in Berry Cove in Cypress Harbour. With a fish farm on one side and a logging operation on the other you’d think it would be a questionable anchorage. However, they were both quiet neighbours and our view of a small grassy point was lovely.
