In ep 12 Lewis says literally the same thing he said in ep 1, only changing 彼/kare (he/him) to 君/kimi (you)!

This line from Bravern (despite the image of Superbia it's Bravern who's talking, in the bad end; Smith says something similar earlier) is so interesting to me. He's describing courage purely in terms of relationships to other people, even though you'd usually think of it as something you possess entirely within yourself.

In scenes like the first fusion, where Lulu is encouraging Isami to "brave bang", if you view them in isolation, you would think it was about courage as a choice to do things without knowing the outcome for sure, and I think that is true too; but considering that we later learn that Lulu in this scene has returned to ensure that Bravern and Isami don't go off alone and get killed, it might not be so different from Smith's meaning after all.

Lulu, of course, has jumped back in time from a future where Bravern and Isami saved the world at the cost of their own lives; she talks about becoming a hero who saves them, even though it means giving up (at least for herself?) a future of certain victory.

And when Smith died, it wasn't for the sake of saving the world that he refused to accept it. The thought that successfully brought him across time and death was simply: I made a promise to him.

I don't know what's going to happen in the final episode. But if we're "meeting true bravery", I think it's going to be more about the people you love than about victory in battle.

(I'm still not sure what I make of about the focus on waiting specifically though. Being patient and having faith that they'll meet you where you're both going, like Isami eventually does? Bravern waiting for the moment to tell Isami how he feels? It's an interesting choice for a story that goes so quickly!)

Actual Serious Thoughts now that it’s been a few days since ep2 is that. bravern is going for camp, and to play up aspects of the super robot genre (called attacks, powerups, endless optimism, hot-blooded manly affection/rivalry, mechs that care for their pilots) and that obviously frames them in a humorous way juxtaposed in a real robot setting. and i definitely get why people are afraid of it turning mean about any of those things, and i also very much hope it doesn’t!! i think there will likely have to be allowances on both sides of the equation, but since it’s reading imo as camp rather than HAHA isn’t it STUPID to CALL ATTACKS atm that the allowances will be both “sides” learning to work together, i.e. bravern perhaps not coming onto isami So Strong but also the military aspect not being like Big Unknown Robot Bad >:( like bravern is the one winning the battles rn!!! it’s still following super robot rules even if it’s also acknowledging how silly they can be, which gives me hope!!

however my sillier thought is that. for as much as non-mecha fans like to say THIS show is SPECIAL because it’s about the PEOPLE instead of the ROBOTS, i think that a better sign of a good mecha is when the robot has captured the hearts of its fans and there is significant mecha fanart too. and so in this respect bravern is peak LMAO
