CHAPTER XIX KIRK found that he had dozed off and Spock must have stretched the auxiliary control chair back to a reclining position for him. Kirk sat up a little sheepishly. Spock was the one who should be resting. But he could see the Vulcan sitting steadily at the controls, scanning and tracking. There never seemed to be an end to the Vulcan’s stamina when he was needed. Kirk saw Omne still stretched out in a trance which was close to coma—almost unbreathing, very close to death. Kirk looked at Omne’s back in astonishment. The healing foam had cleared away the debris from the deeply charred muscles and its molecular growth-forcer had helped the trance draw a thin film of new skin over the breach. It was somehow shocking to see the translucent newborn skin on the giant. It was the first time Kirk had felt that there was a breach in the giant’s invulnerable strength. Omne was in their hands now, deep in the trance, and would need one of them to wake him from a sleep which would otherwise be death—even for an immortal. They were the last two men in the galaxy to whom Omne should have trusted his life. And Kirk knew very well that they were the only two men to whom he would have. He stood over Omne for a long moment and then padded forward to Spock. “We have cut the trail, Captain,” Spock said quietly, as if he had followed Kirk’s progress, and even his thoughts. “Too late to intercept James. Very shortly ahead of the Commander—who is barely one jump ahead of the Commander-in-Chief. We are on warp drive for the Anomaly. I cannot raise James and have not risked a directional beam to the Commander.” Kirk nodded. “Do you want me to wake Omne?” Spock turned and stood up to face him. “With the ship’s equipment and computer databank I have calculated and programmed the path in, and out, of the Anomaly. The information on Omne’s refueling base and what is, perhaps, his ultimate refuge at the top-of-the-world vortex of the Anomaly, are here in a sealed code. I have been able to break the language by eidetic recall of certain memories from my link with Omne before he killed himself. By deep reconstruction of those memories I am able to deduce much of what Omne would know or predict about his other self.” “You are saying that we do not, in fact, need Omne,” Kirk said carefully. “There is his strength,” Spock said as carefully, tonelessly. “He is an army. But he is the enemy army. And we must assume that he is a prime target. The Other must force him to yield the key to the self-destruct process.” “And if he never came,” Kirk said, “the Other would die.” Kirk looked at Spock steadily. “Are you saying that we should not wake Omne?” Spock met his eyes as steadily. He spoke after a pause. “This Omne may save your life a dozen tunes over, and yet betray you at the end. The Other—we cannot live with.” Spock lifted his head. “Jim, if the decision were to be made, it would be mine, not yours. He is beyond the point where a Human could revive him. He knew that he would be.” Kirk stood straight, not offering argument. “And against all that?” he prompted very quietly. Spock looked at him bleakly. “He counted on my honor.” Kirk nodded. “Is there a point,” Spock said, “where honor ends?” His face wore that look of the prehistoric Vulcan who had never known the thousand years’ peace. Kirk understood entirely. It was Spock who had suffered most—down to the uncertainty now of his own memories since the day of the Phoenix, and the knowledge that even Kirk could not know when he had been with the real Spock—and would never know while any Omne lived. Spock��s own memories, his life, everything he was or wanted, belonged to Omne now. Nothing was private. Nothing was safe. Kirk looked at Spock. “If there is a point at which honor ends, the question is whether for you this is it. If it is, I will know why. For myself I will say only that it would be my honor, too. I let you make the commitment, knowing what it would mean for you.” Kirk hesitated a moment. “But I thought that I could revive him.” Spock took a step toward the medical area and looked down at Omne’s back. “How was he wounded?” “Covering me.” “You do not remind me that he covered you before, or that he saved my life?” Kirk shook his head. “No. You need no reminder.” Spock stood still for a very long moment. “No,” he said, “I do not.” He looked at Kirk. “Unfortunately. And unfortunately Omne knows me too well, and you better. It is the second decision which we may live to regret for a thousand years—if we survive the day.” He reached down and put his hands on Omne’s temples. “If honor ends—it is… not yet.” His eyes began to cloud. “I… am… sorry, Jim. I gave him … my word.” Spock’s whole body stiffened in agony, and Kirk recognized the Vulcan’s look of being caught in a link, drawn down into it, down into the trance-meld which would become unbreakable. Kirk seized Spock’s shoulders, as he had done to bring him back from too-strong links with Nomad, with the Horta—so many times… But this time he shook Spock and Omne, too—realizing suddenly that there might be a special danger in linking these too-similar minds. If the link became indissoluble— Perhaps the Vulcan had known of that danger, too. “Spock!” Nothing. Kirk turned to shake the giant. “Omne!” Still nothing. “Omnedon!” Kirk thundered it, and tore the Vulcan’s hands away from Omne’s head, flung bun back, and as the giant’s head suddenly came up, blank-eyed, Kirk slapped him in the standard way of breaking the healing trance. CHAPTER XIX <カーク>は自分が眠ってしまっていたことに気付いた、彼の為にスポック倒したのに違いない補助制御チェアに身を伸ばしていた。カークは気恥ずかしげに腰を上げた。スポックこそ休まなくてはならないのにと。彼は腰をおろしたヴァルカンがしっかりと制御をスキャンをトラッキングを行っている様子を見た。それはまるで彼が必要とするならヴァルカンのスタミナは決して尽きないのではないかと思わせる様子だった。カークは手足を伸ばし昏睡に近いトランス状態のままのオムネを見た -- 呼吸はほぼしておらず、非常に死に近かった。カークは驚きをもってオムネの背中を見た。ヒーリングフォー��が酷く焦げてしまった筋肉の残骸をクリアにし、分子成長ピストンが傷を覆う新たな肌を生成する手助けをトランスが助けていた。巨人の生まれたての半透明な皮膚を見た、それがどういうわけか衝撃だった。巨人の不死身の強さを侵害するものがあったのだと初めてカークが感じたからであった。今彼等の手の中にオムネがいる、深いトランス状態で、眠りから彼等の誰かが彼を目覚めさせなければ死に至ってしまうのだ -- 例え不死の者であっても。彼等はオムネが彼の命を任せた銀河でたったふたりの男だった。そしてカークには良くわかっていた、彼が得ようとしているたったふたりの男なのだと。長い瞬間、オムネの元に立っていた彼がスポックへとそっと動いた。 ”痕跡が途絶えました、船長 ” スポックが静かに言った、まるで彼がカークの進行を、彼の思考さえも追っている様に。 ”ジェームズを捉えるには遅すぎました。指揮官にはほんの僅かに進行していますが -- 最高司令官とは辛うじてジャンプ一回分です。我々はワープドライブでAnomaly へ向かっています。ジェームズを引き上げる事も危険を侵さず指揮官に方向指示ビームを放つ事も私にはできません ” カークは頷いた。 ”私がオムネを起こす事を望むか? ” スポックは彼へ向き合う為に立ち上がった。 ”船の計器とコンピュータとデータバンクにはAnomaly への入出経路をプログラムしました。オムネの補給ベースに関する情報としては恐らく最終的な隠れ家はAnomaly の渦の極北地点ではなかろうかと、シールドコードにありました。オムネが自死する前の私とのリンクからの確かな視覚的記憶イメージを伝達手段として解析できました。深部の記憶によってもうひとりの彼についてのオムネの知識または予測を演繹することもできました ” ”君はオムネを必要とすべきではないと、そう言っているのか? ” カークは慎重に言った。 ”彼には強さがあります ” スポックもまた慎重に平坦に言った。 ”彼は戦士です。だが彼は敵の戦士だ。我々は彼のプライムターゲットを仮定すべきです。もうひとりは彼に自爆プロセスのキーを与える事を強制するはずです ” ”彼が来なければ ” カークは言った、”もうひとりは死ぬと ” カークはスポックをしっかりと見つめた。 ”君はオムネを起こすべきではないと言っているのか? ” スポックは彼の眼をしっかりと見つめた。一拍置いて彼は口を開いた。 ”このオムネは貴方の生命をいちどならず救うでしょう、だが最後には貴方を裏切ります。もうひとりは -- 私たちと共には生きられない ” スポックは頭を上げた。 ”ジ��、決断をするのであれば貴方のものではなく、私のものにしてください。彼は人間の甦らせる事のできるポイントを越えています。彼がそこに居ることを彼もわかっています ” カークは議論をしようとはせず、背筋を伸ばした。 ”それは全てにおいてか? ” 彼は静かに進めた。スポックは彼を厳しく見つめた。 ”彼は私の名誉を頼りました ” カークは頷いた。 ”ポイントはそこにあります ” スポックが言った。 ”名誉の終わりはどこか? ” 彼の顔は有史以前の、千年の平和など決して知らなかったヴヴァルカンの顔になっていた。カークは完全に理解した。最も苦しんだのはスポックなのだと -- Phoenix の日より今なお不確実な彼自身の記憶、そしてカークでさえ本当のスポックが分からないのだという認識 -- オムネが生きていたとしても決して分からないのだということ。スポック自身の記憶、人生、彼のもの全て若しくは求めるもの、それが今オムネのものになっている。プライベートなど無いのだ。安らぎもない。カークはスポックを見つめた。 ”名誉の終わりがあるのだとして、問題は君にそれが当てはまるのかどうかだ。そうであっても、私には理由がわかる。私自身に言える事はそれもまた私の名誉だということだ。君にとってそれがどういう意味であるか分かっていながら君に確約させてしまったのだから ” カークは瞬間躊躇った。 ”私が彼の意識を取り戻す事ができると思っての事だった ” メディカルエリアに歩を進めたスポックがオムネの背中を見下ろした。 ”彼の傷はどうしてですか? ” ”私を庇ってのものだよ ” ”彼が貴方を庇った事、もしくは私の生命を救ったことを貴方は私に思い出させたくはなかったのですか? ” ”いいや。君にはその必要があったんだな ” スポックは長いことただ立ち尽くしていた。 ”いいえ ” 彼が言った、”無用です ” 彼はカークを見つめた。 ”不運なことに。そして残念な事にオムネは私の事を良く知っている、それは貴方以上に。瞬間の決断をしていたならば我々は千年の間後悔の生を送った事でしょう -- 例えこの日を生き抜いたとしてもです ” 彼は手を伸ばしオムネの米神に置いた。 ”名誉の終わりがあるとすれば -- それは...今ではありません ” 彼の眼が閉じ始めた。 ”申し訳...ありません、ジム。私が...彼に...約束をしてしまった ” スポックの全身が苦しみに強ばりカークは認めた、ヴァルカンがリンクを捉え降りていっている事を、壊す事の出来ないトランスメルドに入った事を。カークはスポックの肩を掴んだ、Nomad やHorta との強すぎるリンクから彼を引き戻した時の様に -- 幾度もそうしたように... この時も彼はスポックとオムネを揺さぶった -- そして、理解した、このリンクが余りに似た精神による特別に危険なものであったことを。リンクを別つ事ができなくなるかも -- 恐らくヴァルカンはその危険をもわかっていたのだ。 ”スポック! ” 反応無し、カークは巨人を揺さぶった。 ”オムネ! ” 静かなままだった。 ”オムネドン! ” カークはそう��鳴り、ヴァルカンの手をオムネの頭から引き剥がし、後ろ髪を掴み白目をむいた巨人の頭を持ちあげヒーリングトランスを壊す通常の方法として彼の顔を叩いた。
