You know you're from Jersey when . . . .
You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges." You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags. A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter. You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven. You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery. At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from. You know what a "jug handle" is. You know that WaWa is a convenience store. You know that the state isn't all farmland. You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey--there's the shore--and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore." And when you are there, you're not "at the shore"; you are "down the shore." You know how to properly negotiate a circle. You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving. You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (try . . Mexico . . . York ..! . . Hampshire-- doesn't work, does it?). You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich. You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege. You don't think "What exit?" is very funny. You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different." Yes they are! You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton--that's for out-of-staters. You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls. You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers. Every year you have at least one kid in your class named Tony. You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits. You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall. You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to LBI, and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way. You weren't raised in New Jersey--you were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey. You don't consider Camden to actually be part of the state You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamberger's and Orbach's. You also remember Palisades Amusement Park. You've had a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries. You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally . .
You've NEVER, NEVER NEVER, EVER pumped your own gas.

Prohibition Repealed
Tumblr media
90 years ago, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation legalizing the sale of wine and beer for the first time since Prohibition was enacted in 1920. New Jersey breweries sprung into action to meet demand ahead of when the law took effect on April 7th, 1933.
Tumblr media
Repealing the increasingly unpopular law became a priority in 1933, and on December 5th the states ratified the 21st Amendment repealing Prohibition. Nevertheless, many municipalities across the nation continued to rely on state laws to remain dry for years.

Pipman brings 19 years of brewery experience in the areas of brewing, packaging, quality assurance, utilities, business administration, engineering, maintenance and leadership.

Sapporo-Stone’s leadership team is designed to meet the unique needs of a large brewery producing the number one selling Asian beer brand in the U.S. and innovative craft offerings. Pipman will guide the team through ongoing growth and innovation, ensuring consistency across both breweries and meeting the exact specifications of Sapporo’s beers.

Name: Casey Sheppard Age: 45 Occupation: Bouncer at Mad Dog Brewery  Time living in Tonopah: A few months Neighborhood: Downtown Gang Affiliation: None Face Claim: Bradley Cooper
Biography:
Casey was born on January 19th, 1977 to Wesley and Lena Sheppard. After several attempts at miscarriages, his parents were finally able to conceive a child. However, Casey would be their only Rainbow Baby. His childhood was pretty great. His parents really let him do whatever he wanted and could pursue just about anything he set his heart on. They wanted their son to be as happy as he could be. When he was ten years old, they moved from Newark, New Jersey, to Reno, Nevada. Wesley received a job opportunity they couldn't pass up so they headed out there.
School had always been pretty easy for Casey. He was an intelligent kid and excelled at academics. Once he graduated, he didn’t really know what he wanted to do so he just putzed around from odd job to odd job. It was when he was working at gas station that got robbed and a police officer came in and saved the day that Casey decided he wanted to be a police officer as well. At the age of twenty-two, he joined the Reno Police Academy and set his sights on his future career.
Quickly, Casey graduated from the academy and moved up to the ranks of the force. During that time, he also took some classes on the side to learn about criminal justice since his ultimate goal was to be a detective. When he was twenty-nine, he graduated and by the time he was thirty, he was made detective in the Reno Police Department. Everything was coming up roses for Casey Sheppard. For the next five years, he stayed with Reno and worked several cases over the years. At one point, he heard about a job opportunity outside of Reno, in Tonopah Falls, Casey headed out there, thinking that could be a good steppingstone into a higher position. Perhaps chief one day. Who knows?
Casey, however, was quickly mixed up in business that he had no right being in nor did he know was even a problem in Tonopah Falls when he came over. Apparently, the city was riddled with drug deals and gang issues and one of Casey's first big stakeouts was to watch a drug deal between the Los Bandoleros, things went sour fast and one of his men shot. From there, it was a war and Casey ended up shooting and killing one of the Los Bandoleros, Estelle. Casey barely had an idea what this meant. He just knew it was bad.
The Tonopah Police Department covered the up the kill, immediately removing Casey's name from the record and they transferred him out within a week. It was too risky to keep him there. So, he was transferred plum across the country to New York City. He was paired with another aged detective, Patrick Murdoch. While what happened in Tonopah Falls was always on the back of Casey's mind, he worked hard in New York. Patrick and himself solved case after case, quickly rising to be one of the top ranked teams in the system. Things had been on the up and up, it seemed, and for the next several years, it stayed that way.
About a year ago, the partners were given a new case about a local cartel drug deal occurring and Casey couldn't help but be weary. However, it was their job and Casey would abide by it. The stakeout took another turn for the worse, however. They were caught by the cartel and the two partners were taken hostage. Casey knew off the rip this was happening because of what happened in Tonopah Falls, which he had never told Pat about, so the man was left in the dark. They questioned and tortured them for hours and this resulted in Patrick being murdered right before Casey's eyes.
Once found by the NYPD and after recovering in the hospital for a few weeks, Casey was honorably discharged from the force. The NYPD paid for therapy for him, which he went to twice a week for several months, just trying to put the pieces of his life together. However, realizing that he didn't want to stay in New York City anymore and he wanted to, maybe, make things right with the Los Bandoleros, he moved back to Tonopah Falls, getting himself a job at the local brewery, just trying to make it day by day.
Headcannons:
After the hellscape of his career, Casey had turned heavily to drinking (which is one of the reasons why he wanted to get the job at the brewery. Quick access).
He loves to watch movies. They're a huge distraction for him.
Casey has an old, nine year old basset hound named Gus. His therapist recommended he get an animal, so he had something to take care of.
He fucking hates seafood. It's just the worst to him.
He's allergic to bees.

Your guide to breweries at this weekend’s Green City
Tumblr media
Other Half Brewing is hosting the long-awaited return of their Green City festival tomorrow and Saturday at Zerospace Baltic in Brooklyn, and there’s still some tickets available if you’ve been procrastinating. But if you’re a planner and you’re going to scope out what to drink ahead of time, here are some suggestions among the breweries that have come from afar to pour.
The Seed: A Living Beer Project (Atlantic City, New Jersey): AC can be the butt of many jokes, but this brewery is not joking around. Since opening in 2020, word has gotten around New Jersey about this spot, which specializes in simple beers using local ingredients and fermentation. They’ll be pouring a mixed-culture saison during each session. [Location: Butler East]
Fast Fashion (Seattle, Washington): It wasn’t long ago that I would send everyone I know to The Masonry in Seattle for great pizza and a well-curated beer list from other breweries. But then in 2021, owner Matt Storm and brewer Brian Strumke (of Stillwater Brewing fame), went and started their own brand of beers. Hidden Gems, a DIPA with Citra and Nelson hops, pours on Friday, and expect Shrimp and White Wine IPA on Saturday, a collab with famed Northwest outlet Great Notion. [Location: Baltic East]
Phase Three Brewing (Lake Zurich, Illinois): It was less than two years between the launch of this suburban Chicago brewery and their rise to the top of many beer writers’ favorites list. The combined thirty years of beer experience of the three founders certainly helped, but collaborating with the likes of Other Half, Weldwerks, and J. Wakefield put them on the map, too. Their DDH Protocol with Citra, Galaxy, and El Dorado is not to be missed Friday; refresh with their P3 German Helles on Saturday. [Location: Butler East]
Harland Brewing Co. (San Diego, California): San Diego has a lot of breweries, and even in a cluttered market, they’ve got a lot of new breweries. Despite this, Harland, which opened in 2018, has grown rapidly while making excellent beer. No surprise, the staff has places like Green Flash, Saint Archer, and Pure Project on their resumes, among others. Stop by for the Double Mango Milkshake Drip Milkshake IPA on Friday, or the Yuzu Japanese Lager on Saturday. [Location: Butler West]
Halfway Crooks Beer (Atlanta, Georgia): Last but definitely not least, this gem has been specializing in lagers since opening in 2019, and it’s sure to be a refreshing stop in the festival for some crispy beers. On Friday, they’ll have the Zero Zero German-Style Pils, and on Saturday, they’ll pour a 10°P Czech-Style Lager called Deset. [Location: Butler East]
