The current flag was made official in 1989.  The use blue, yellow and red dates back to the 6th century.  The colours represented Moldavia and two parts of Wallachia.  The flag used for the Kingdom of Romania 1881-1947 had a coat of arms in the centre stripe (yellow).  The flag used during the time of communism 1947-1989 had a coat of arms with communist symbols.  Protesters during the 1989 revolution cut the communist coat of arms from the flag.  Afterwards the government decided to leave the centre empty.  Now it is just blue/yellow/red.
