A cashmere crewneck isn’t really a surprise for a warm-weather staple. I have relied heavily on a strong rotation of Everlane’s version since they launched them a few years ago. The Closet of Nimue Smit

Met haar bachelor in Public Health Pre-Medicine op zak vliegt ze de wereld over om shows te lopen voor de internationale Fashion Weeks en siert ze deze maand de cover van de Harper’s Bazaar. Topmodel Nimue Smit (26) werd tien jaar geleden op Hyves ontdekt, liep een jaar later de Prada-show en verhuisde naar New York. Inmiddels is ze terug op Nederlandse bodem, heeft ze namen als Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana en Louis Vuitton aan haar portfolio toegevoegd en gingen wij langs voor een kijkje in haar kledingkast. The Next Closet sprak Nimue over duurzaamheid en de mode-industrie.

Vest: Alexander Wang, pantalon: Dries van Noten

Waar ben je het meest trots op?  “Dat ik het al tien jaar lang heb volgehouden in de modellenwereld. Ik ben dankbaar en trots op het feit dat ik er nog steeds ben. De afgelopen tien jaren waren een rollercoaster en ik heb veel ervaring opgedaan. Van recent werk ben ik heel trots op deze editorial voor Prada met Willy Vanderperre. Dat was een Audrey Hepburn-achtige foto: een beetje filmy.” 

Wat staat er op jouw wishlist voor je modellencarrière? “Een make-up campagne, dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan. Ik heb eens met fotograaf Tim Walker samengewerkt voor Mulberry en zijn werk vind ik prachtig. Het is heel sprookjesachtig. Dat zou ik graag nog eens willen doen.”

Doorschijnende blouse: Preen Line

Speelt duurzaamheid een rol in jouw leven? “Het is moeilijk om in de modellenwereld sustainable te zijn. Als ik te vaak in hetzelfde shirt bij een casting verschijn, dan word ik door mijn bureau in New York op de vingers getikt. Daarom leen ik veel van vrienden en shop ik tweedehands. Ik vlieg veel en wil dat compenseren, dus ik eet nauwelijks vlees, probeer mijn zuivelinname te limiteren en heb altijd een thermosfles bij me, zodat ik minder plastic gebruik. Ook heb ik mijn huis voorzien van een groen dak om biodiversiteit terug te brengen naar de stad!”

Hoe kijk je tegen de mode-industrie aan? “Ik ben kritisch naar deze industrie. Ik vind dat we te veel produceren en niet nadenken over hoe de planeet en mensen daaronder lijden. Er is een boel verantwoordelijkheid die niet wordt genomen. Het wordt op elkaar afgeschoven. Tweedelig pak: Sportmax

Heb je een bepaalde filosofie die je naleeft bij het kopen van kleding? “Ik koop geen fast fashion - juist zoveel mogelijk tweedehands. Voor mij is het is belangrijk dat het ethisch en sustainable geproduceerd is. Je moet nadenken over waarin je investeert. Ik koop goede basics waarvan ik weet dat ze lang meegaan. Ik draag nu regelmatig de oude, Bretonse kapiteinspet die mijn opa nog had liggen en in de kast van mijn oma vond ik een gave driekwart broek met wijde pijpen en een strakke taille – die is van mijn tante geweest. Ik denk vaak na over hoe maak ik dat shirt van vorig seizoen weer cool?”

In de fashionwereld gaat het vaak om het maken van een statement. Bij The Next Closet doen we ons best om de mode-industrie een beetje duurzamer te maken door het verkopen en dragen van tweedehands kleding toegankelijk, hip en cool te maken. Welk statement wil jij maken?

“Ik ben in New York bezig met een groep van driehonderd collega-modellen en activisten: Model Mafia. We zetten onze stem en bekendheid in voor goede doelen, om samen meer verbintenis te creëren in onze industrie en deze duurzamer te maken. Zo zijn we vorig jaar naar de People’s Climate March gegaan om te protesteren tegen Trumps policy. Dit zou ik ook graag in Amsterdam willen opzetten. Model zijn is een best eenzaam beroep. Je reist alleen, je gaat alleen naar castings, dus je bent een kwetsbaar individu. Het is belangrijk om met elkaar te praten, zeker met de #metoo discussie in het achterhoofd.” 

Tas: Céline, tweedelig pak: Sportmax

 Wat is het verhaal achter de Céline tas? “Die heb ik gekregen bij de eerste show die ik voor Céline liep. Dat was een heel speciaal moment: de comeback van het merk Céline. Het gebeurt niet vaak dat je zo’n cool item cadeau krijgt bij een show. Ik vind het belangrijk dat kleding leeft. Ik geef ook vaak items aan vrienden waarvan ik weet dat ze een stuk mooi vinden, want ik heb veel verzameld door de jaren heen. Ik heb deze tas met veel plezier gebruikt, maar ik voel dat de tijd is gekomen dat deze voor iemand anders de nummer één wordt.”

Pumps: Christian Louboutin

Aan welk item in je closet heb je de meest waardevolle herinnering? “De Louboutins heb ik gekocht van mijn eerst verdiende geld. Het zijn lange tijd mijn casting schoenen geweest en ik droeg ze naar de diploma-uitreiking van mijn middelbare school. De galajurk van BCBG Max Azria heb ik gescoord op een private sale in een straatje achteraf bij een tweedehands marktje in Parijs. Het is zo leuk als je tweedehands iets scoort dat perfect past, maar soms is het tijd om dingen te laten gaan…”

Broek: Wood Wood, sneakers: Alexander McQueen

Hoe omschrijf je jouw kledingstijl? “Effortless chic en het Franse ‘Je ne sais quoi’. Ik word blij van een stijlvol pak met een mooi paar oorbellen, comfy sneakers en af en toe een statement piece. Een combi van netjes, elegant en comfortabel. Een klassieke Ralph Lauren of Chloé vrouw vind ik ook mooi.” 

Wat heb je met sneakers?  “Dit is een geweldig paar sneakers dat ik cadeau heb gekregen, maar ze zijn net een beetje te klein. Als ik ze draag, krijg ik blaren en daarvoor houd ik te veel van comfort, dus deze kun je shoppen in mijn closet.”

Van welk materiaal is je favoriete kledingstuk gemaakt? “Wolmix. Ik houd van natuurlijke materialen en draag vaak katoen en wol. Zomers vind ik lekkere linnen jurken prettig. Kasjmier is ook altijd fijn!” 

Waarom draag je dat het liefst? “Ik vind dat het lekkerst voelen op mijn huid. Ik heb altijd het idee dat het moet ademen. In online shopping ben ik eigenlijk helemaal niet goed. Ik shop meer op gevoel en vind het fijn om items en stoffen in je handen te hebben. Inmiddels weet ik dat Alaïa en Chloé mooie stoffen gebruiken.”

Zien we ook tweedehands terug in je interieur? “De vintage stoel heb ik bij de geweldige tweedehands winkel De Lokatie in Amsterdam gekocht. Verder heb ik veel van Marktplaats. Ik struin heel wat tweedehands winkels af. Tussen het grofvuil op straat snuffel ik ook weleens. Daar komen een paar eettafelstoelen, mijn spiegel en wat planten vandaan. Het is best een groot huis en op een gegeven moment was mijn budget op. Ik heb liever dat het in mijn huis staat, dan op de vuilnisbelt.”

Wat is je favoriete shopstad? “New York, omdat alles er is: zelfs een uitgebreid aanbod aan tweedehands winkels waar je altijd iets kunt vinden. The Break is er zo één. De kleding daar past heel goed bij lange mensen – ik denk dat de eigenaresse dat ook is. De IJhallen en Noordermarkt vind ik chill en voor designerstukken zijn jullie handig.” 

Waar kunnen we jou vinden als je vrij bent? “Het liefst ben ik dan lekker thuis aan het koken voor vrienden of in de bios. Ik doe graag yoga, en ben veel te vinden bij verschillende yogaplekjes of in een café met een goed boek.”

Broek: Wood Wood

Wat lees je nu? “Ik heb net Swing Time gelezen en ben nu helemaal into de schrijfster ervan: Zadie Smith. Ze schrijft veel over jonge vrouwen en hun verhouding tot de maatschappij. Ze is zelf Jamaicaans, het gaat ook over blackness in verschillende culturen in Engeland en over het vrouw worden binnen deze culturen. On beauty van haar is ook echt geweldig! Dat gaat over welke moeilijkheden ‘mooi zijn’ met zich meebrengt, maar ook het omgekeerde ervan. Haar manier van schrijven is echt prachtig. Ze heeft een rijke vocabulaire.” 

Tien jaar geleden stond je aan het begin van je modellencarrière, nu ben je enorm succesvol – wat wil je de komende tien jaar bereiken? “Dat Model Mafia in Amsterdam echt staat en dat het mooie dingen heeft laten gebeuren. Het moet modellenwerk voor de toekomstige generatie makkelijker en beter maken. Ik wil graag iets achterlaten wat mensen geholpen heeft. Misschien heb ik tegen die tijd wel een carrièreswitch gemaakt en doe ik iets in gezondheidssector - meer in het straatje van mijn studie: een health start-up lijkt me leuk.”

No Lany shirt

Café Alaïa Da Rosa is open now at 5 Rue de Marignan, 75008, Paris. Hours: Tuesday – Saturday from midday to 7:00 p.m. Dua Lipa rang in her stylist Lorenza Posocco’s birthday in Italy this past weekend with some equally celebratory clothes. The pop star opted for a crochet mini skirt and crop top set from the No Lany shirt in contrast I will get this GCDS spring 2022 collection, which came with adorable little skulls and long tassels attached to the skirt. Lipa wore a lace bra underneath her top and finished the look with a pair of sky-high, glitter-soaked platform Mary Jane heels for a retro, Cher effect. (Posocco, for his part, wore printed Versace trousers from fall 2021). Lipa has long been involved with the Italian label GCDS, who are known for infusing their clothes with cartoons and all-things playful. They created the pop star’s merch in 2017. For the spring 2021 collection and digital show, Lipa and her boyfriend Anwar Hadid became front-row avatars. In terms of clothing, she has worn everything from a “J’adore GCDS” t-shirt to a pair of lime green, knee-high boots with a Jurassic Park logo plastered on them. But this isn’t the first time that Lipa has worn a crochet piece by the saucy label; she’s also sported one of their micro bikinis as well. We’ll be keeping our eyes open to see more of what Lipa and GCDS have in store for us. It’s officially that time of year when we revisit the fall staples that have been tucked away in our wardrobes—namely, boots, coats, and essential sweaters. At the dawn of the season, without fail, excitement rushes through us to curate new ensembles surrounding these items. It’s also the time for us to engage in a reset of sorts to evaluate the treasures we own, the pieces we might want to donate, and what few new additions we’d like to procure.
