The Double Standard in the Wellesley CS Department: An open essay from former students of the Department
The following was submitted to us by former students in Wellesley’s Computer Science Department:
The Wellesley Computer Science (CS) Department prides itself on preparing its students to take on both the technical and social challenges they will face in their professional futures. Questions of gender discrimination in the greater CS community are frequently discussed* with the Department’s active support evident, for example, in its funding for students’ attendance at the Grace Hopper Celebration, the conference known for being the “world’s largest gathering of women technologists”. However, the treatment of the Department’s junior faculty and lab instructors (non-tenure track positions) confers a contradictory message.
This disparity is highlighted by the recent reappointment denial to Prof. Ada Lerner; the decision has surprised the student community given Ada’s status as a beloved professor, known for both their focus on teaching and inclusivity in the department, and their contributions to the field of computing more broadly. We, a group of former students of the Department, question the rationale behind Ada’s dismissal and what it indicates about the treatment of junior, or pre-tenure, professors in the department.
(*We later discuss the fact that other forms of discrimination are not consistently discussed by the department, but we do note that gender discrimination in particular is frequently mentioned, owing in particular to Wellesley's status as a historically women's college.)
A champion of all students
Prof. Ada Lerner joined the Wellesley CS faculty in 2017, immediately upon their graduation from the UW Allen School of Computer Science doctoral program, after receiving numerous tenure-track offers. Ada quickly became a favorite of students for their remarkable teaching skills, instructing students at a variety of levels, including Introduction to Computing, Data Structures, and an advanced seminar on Security & Privacy–their research area. Students frequently commend their flexible late policy, which carefully balances student mental and physical wellbeing with course content and academic achievement. A variation of Ada’s policy was implemented near universally by the Department at large.
Ada’s belief in and support for their students is further exemplified by their content delivery and expectations of students. One former student summed up their seminar course as “by far the most challenging elective I took as a computer science major, and while in any other context that might’ve been an incredibly stressful experience, Ada worked with me to make sure I could finish all the work. She by no means went easy on me, but she did give me the support I needed to finish the work.”
“She definitely doesn’t let you off easy,” adds another student, “but she gives you the support so when it gets hard, you know you can ask questions without judgment. The material would go over my head in class and then Ada would explain it fifteen different ways until I felt comfortable.”
Ada’s research area reflects the same care and concern for the experience of marginalized populations. Their research was featured in Wellesley Magazine in Summer 2019, with the article “Online Safety for All” highlighting their focus on inclusive security and privacy, describing the field as “a subfield of security that focuses on specific populations, including marginalized or vulnerable groups like refugees or LGBTQ people, as well as groups with key roles in society, such as lawyers or journalists.” Their work recently garnered a prestigious $175,000 grant for “Understanding and Addressing the Security and Privacy Needs of At-Risk Populations” from the National Science Foundation and has been published in highly selective computing conferences, including the 2020 ACM CHI conference (24.3% acceptance rate). As former students, we note that her lab is impressively staffed with students from various grade levels who often serve as co-authors on lab publications and are actively involved in a variety of projects. A student who has worked with Ada as a research assistant jokes that they feel “almost spoiled” for having had the chance to work with a research mentor who is so considerate of student experience and learning.
Outside the classroom, Ada is an outspoken advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the Department. “Ada shows up,” one alum states. “They not only consistently attend events where students voice their concerns and celebrate their identities, they intentionally look for ways to uplift and empower marginalized student voices, asking all the right questions and putting in whatever work is necessary to aim for equity in all aspects of college life.” Ada helped lead a self-study that publicly disclosed the experiences of different student populations in the Department, with a particular focus on the roles of race, ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identity and class, as well as the experiences of students with learning accommodations. While the results were conclusive that the CS Department, like many others on campus, had a lot of work to do, DEI efforts seemed to stall at the study’s conclusion.
Students were confused that the Department failed to implement student-facing changes the study suggested; some students noted the repeated absences of some professors and observed that some senior faculty members didn’t seem to buy in to the topic. We cannot help but wonder if some professors hostile to the DEI push led by Ada did not support her reappointment as a result of their feelings about the self-study.
All of the above leaves us puzzled by the College’s decision to terminate Ada’s tenure-track contract, making this their last year at Wellesley. The Committee on Faculty Appointments (CFA), which decides matters of faculty appointment, promotion, and reappointments on behalf of the College, handed down the decision leaving us both surprised and concerned about the integrity of the reappointment process and the potential factors affecting the decision. We note that the CFA states they make decisions based both on the recommendation of the candidate’s home department, as well as their own evaluation of a candidate’s quality of teaching, research, and service to the College. Given the information we’ve shared, we question why the College chose not to reappoint an assistant professor who is clearly beloved by students for her teaching, mentorship, support, and inclusivity.
To that end, we remind students that are bothered by the decision made regarding Ada's reappointment they can voice their concerns to the Committee on Faculty Appointments, who are ultimately responsible for reconsidering the decision. Information on that process:
You can send emails concerning your impressions of Professor Lerner to the address: [email protected]. If you want to send physical letters, they should be addressed to:

According to college policy, your letter will be shared with Professor Lerner and the chair of the Computer Science department (Professor Takis Metaxas), as well as all members of the Committee for Faculty Appointments. You may indicate in your email whether you would like for your letter to be shared anonymously with identifying wording removed, or with your name attached. Letters may be submitted electronically as an email, or as an email attachment.
If you have any further questions about this process, you can contact Jennifer Ellis, Clerk of the Committee on Faculty Appointments ([email protected]).
Reflecting on departmental culture
We reflect on this decision in the context of the Department’s junior faculty at large; specifically, we are concerned by trends that we have witnessed as students in the Department interacting directly with junior faculty. We are frustrated with the way some of the more senior members of the department have handled the hiring and retention of faculty in general.
Junior faculty are held to extremely high standards that we believe the people imposing those standards wouldn’t necessarily have met at the same point in thei careers. Junior faculty are also much more likely to be approached by students, both because they teach many of the introductory classes that students will have taken by the time they must choose an advisor, and because their demographics are often more similar to those of the student population. While the formal advisor process has been restructured to take some of the load off the junior faculty, many are still approached for informal advice and guidance in a way their senior peers are not; it is also unclear if current tenure-track professors will have their research expectations reduced as a result of the excessive amount of advising they were previously providing. We also note that a particular source of emotional support for students – lab instructors – are mostly women and untenured, meaning that they do not have the job security that their peers do, and are not necessarily compensated for their mentorship in the same way.
We call on the senior faculty to make themselves more approachable to students, so that the load does not fall on junior faculty, who are also facing the pressures of research and teaching evaluations. There are existing models for this, including many adopted by Wellesley's own Math department, who host informal teas to build community and encourage interaction between senior faculty and students in various ways. We also note that along with Ada, Prof. Sohie Lee is a champion of D&I initiatives and has worked to implement new tutor training, yet she is one of the few faculty members of color and is technically a lab instructor, despite holding a PhD, This again reflects an onus of emotional and cultural labor on already overburdened pre-tenure and non-tenure track faculty.
It is unclear to us why the Department is both unable to hire many faculty of color, and unable to retain the faculty of color that they do hire. We question whether the environment of the Department is perceived as hostile, and, if so, what can be done to change that. We theorize that, in part, the Department's hiring practices may be exclusionary, as the majority of candidates come from a small pool of highly selective CS programs, which are already known to have a host of systemic problems that make them unwelcoming environments to both people of color and those who are not cisgender men.
Moving forward
This letter has two main goals. First, we hope to make the Wellesley community aware of the double standard in the CS department, and especially encourage the upper levels of administration to investigate the treatment of junior faculty in the department. Second, we hope to encourage members of the department to reflect critically on the treatment of their peers and engage in self-reflection with regards to departmental culture. Ultimately, we believe that it is in large part these systemic problems in the department that contributed to Ada's reappointment denial, rather than official, concrete factors such as teaching, research, and service to the CS department and College at large.
We call on those involved to truly reflect on the concerns raised here and via other fora, and to commit to measurable improvement; in short, to do better, both for current students and faculty and for those to come.

What I think Biotech freshmen should learn during your first year at IU
So my first year has finally ended. The curriculum for freshman year is pre-determined by the Office of Academics so I did not have a chance to change the schedule. I took about 7 subjects each semester, with a total of 2 semesters. If you do not have to take IE1 and IE2 classes, you can “jump” directly into the main curriculum. So in my first year I took: Calculus 1&2, Physics 1&2, General Biology and Chemistry plus 2 Bio and Chem labs, Organic Chemistry, Academic English 1&2 (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), Critical Thinking, Introduction to Biotechnology, P.E. It’s a relief that I could work through the courses although I was not excelling at STEM subjects in highschool. But college taught me all the amazing skills to study on my own and discover knowledge for my self-growth. Apart from schoolwork, I think any Biotech freshmen should also keep an eye on learning other extra skills of a scientist/professional, which I will list below. Do not worry because a year ago I entered this school while being a completely blank state, having seen so many of my friends succeeded in getting scholarships, leading extracurricular activities,... I felt hopeless sometimes but I believe in grinding one step at a time until I could accomplish the job. So my general experience boils down to being humble and let others teach you the skills, then practice slowly but firmly. You will be able to grow so much faster. And do not compare yourself with others’ success stories because everyone has their strengths and their own clock.
These are the lists of skills I have learnt and will continue to improve in the future. I will be expanding and giving more details about each point. This is in no chronological order:
- Learn to make a positive affirmations/ orienting articles book:
During your whole college career, you will have a lot of moments of self-doubt, for example when your grades are not good, you've failed some classes, your part-time job application got turned down too many times (trust me I am so familiar with such rejections), some experiments got messy and returned no results, you wonder what your future in the field would look like. These are all scenarios that have happened to me in freshman year.
Therefore, I have found a way to cope with self-doubt and boost my confidence, which is to make a collection of positive affirmations and orienting articles. I would form an imagined overview of my own career path reading all these writings and finally came to recording my own path . I use all forms of note-jotting tools to record them. I tend to record 1) Experience snippets from influencing scientists in my field, whom I happen to follow on Facebook 2) Lists of “What college kids need to practice before they graduate” (Dr.Le Tham Duong 's Facebook) 3) Ybox 's Shared tips for career orientation column (Link) 4) Short paragraphs from the books that I have read. The paragraphs often contain insights into what successful people (in Biotech or in Finance) have thought, have planned, and have acted on. For digital copy of the books, I save the snippets into a file called "Clippings" and later export them through the website called clippings.io
- Have an online note-taking tools for jotting down important thinking (recommend Keep or Evernote for quick jot, while Onenote is more suitable for recording lectures thanks to its structure that resembles a binder)
A snippet of my Evernote, where I store career advice:
- Learn to do research properly (what is a journal, what is a citation management software, what is the structure of a paper[abstract, introduction, methods, data analysis, discussion, conclusion], poster, conferences). You can begin to search for academic papers using Google Scholar scholar.google.com. However, there are countless of other websites for published journals that serve different sience fields. You need to dig into Google further to find them.
- Learn to write essays (basic tasks are covered in Writing AE courses including brainstorming, reading, citings, argumentative essay, process essay, preparing thesis statement)
- Join a lab: learn the safety guidelines, learn who is in control of the lab, what researches/projects are being carried there). As for this, you need to make contact with professors from our department. Most professors here are friendly and willing to help if you just come up and ask a question after class. To be eligible to join their labs, - Learn to write a proper email to a professor: to ask for what will be on the next test, whether you can be a volunteer in their lab (usually by cold-email, and the professor will likely ask for your background: your highschool grades, your motivation,...); write email to an employer asking for a temporary position. - Learn to write a meeting minute: a sum-up of your meeting with other team members - Learn to answer basic questions for a volunteer opportunity: what is your strength, what is your past experience, what do you know about us, what is your free-time - Learn to write a CV: using topcv,... or downloading free templates on the Internet and write a motivation letter: What you are currently doing, what problems have you solved for your employers, and what can you do to help your new employers solve their problems.
- Learn to create an attractive presentation by using Canvas and learn to deliver ideas effectively (recommended book Think on your feet [Lib 1]).
I have discovered Canvas only for a year, but its graphics are so attractive and appealing to my taste, so here is my presentation for Finals using Canvas:
- Learn a programming language or a second language: recommend Python or R, and any foreign language that you feel interested in, but your ultimate goal would be to comfortably use that language in academic reading and exchanging ideas through writing and speaking (which is a long journey of 4+ years learning), so choose wisely. - Learn to create an online presence through a blog (Tumblr, Wordpress, Github, StackExchange,...), stalk your favorite experts on Quora and Reddit, make a habit to have a journal article delivered to your inbox every morning (me being Medium, Pocket, Nature); then Instagram or YouTube - Recommended books for incomming freshmen: How to be a straight-A student, Do not eat alone (socializing skills) - Recommended Medium sites: - Recommended Newspapers: The Economist, The Guardian, The New York Times Opinions Columns, Nature’s columns, The Scientific American. - Recommended Youtube Channels: - Recommended Podcasts: listen passively on the bus, but try to paraphrase in your own words what you have understood about their conversation: - Recommended study spots: Den Da Coffeeshop, The Coffeehouse, Library of [...] in District 1, Central Library (Thu Duc District), IU Library.
- Learn the Pomodoro technique and Forest app: - Important websites for study resources: libgen, khanacademy, Coursehero (post only a short paragraph to get 1 free upload), scripd organic chemistry tutor, for jobs: ybox.vn - If your laptop is capable (with decent hardware), learn Adobe Tools (Video editing, Photoshop,...). My laptop can only run Linux Mint, so I chose to learn the skill of citation management and research (using less resource). Basically do not become computer-illiterate. - To reduce eye-strain, buy an e-reader to read scientific papers, do not print out all of them. - One exception to IU: you can bring one two-sided A4 paper into certain exams: this is my note for Calculus class:

- Learn to write a grand summary of formulas for Physics 2, meta-sum of all exercise questions - Prepare for IELTS (if you haven't taken IELTS already): you'll need it to pass IE classes, or apply for an exchange program. Ultimately, you need at least 6.0 in IELTS to graduate. I stumbled upon this careful list of tips from a senior student in our BT department who got an 8.0 => Link
Basically, follow Ngoc Bach’s page on Facebook to receive fully-solved exam materials, add ielts-simon.com into the mix, learn 560 academic word list, listen to Ted Talk and podcasts, do tests on ieltsonlinetests.com, do Cambridge IELTS book 9-14 and you’re good to go. - Have your eyes on competitions that spark your interest (innovative competition, writing contests, speaking and debating contests,...)
- Develop your fitness routine to protect your sanity when academic coursework overwhelm you and make you gain 15 pounds.
I do home HIIT exercises on Fitness Blender’s Youtube channel, Emi Wong, Chloe Ting home workouts in the beginning.
Later I went to the gym and do split routines with weights, then threw in squats, deadlifts, lunges and HIIT on treadmill. This is how my current routine look like: (I work out only 4 times/week)
- Learn to use flashcards. (Quizlet has premade flashcards for biology class)
- Learn to manage personal finance: what is budget, expenses, income,... - Learn some google tweaks to pirate stuff. (especially textbook files and solutions files) - Learn to make handwritten A4 notes. I will post my own handwritten notes for Critical Thinking Mid (final is taken), Calculus II Mid and Final. - Learn to create meta sets for formulas and problems. I will post my formula set for Physics II and Problem/Skill set for Organic Chemistry. For Physics II, I learned my hard lesson is that it is better to do past exams than to solve advance textbook problems, so I stuck with past exams posted by TA and learnt by heart all the formulas, SI units. For Organic Chemistry you need a skillset checklist (like in the Wade textbook). Also there are questions from the slides such as the connection of amylopectin,... But they won't challenge you to think much. Only the amount of information to be memorized is deemed challenging here. - Intro to Biotech was quite easy and you could prepare in advance. 3 faculty members (from 3 fields: plant, animal, pharma) will take turn giving you an overview lecture. The exam will ask “Write what you know about those fields and their applications”, openbook-style. So hear me out and search for Overview powerpoints of that field, then write your own essay, print it out and bring it with you into the exam. Your power should be spent on Calculus and Physics, not on memorizing the essay.

What are the Challenges while preparing for the competitive exams? Meripadhai.com
'Should I join a coaching centre for bank Po, SSC or prepare on my own? Should I buy the entrance exam books or create my own notes? Should I leave my job and concentrate only on study by joining competitive exams coaching or should I first seek guidance from my friends? Is there any success plan or mantra for clearing the entrance exam in first attempt?'
You really wished someone was there to answer all these questions for you and give you a hundred percent guarantee for clearing the competitive exams. Well, these questions are not making it any easier for you; in fact they are holding you back from achieving success and fulfilling your dream.
Let’s tackle with each and every challenge that is coming your way to victory, one by one.
1. Self-Motivation – You need to help yourself first. If you believe in making time-tables but never follow it, then do not make one. The point is to make a practical achievable target and follow it step by step, do not be in a rush to do a lot of preparation at once. Success doesn't happen overnight you need to give your best without being
2. Aimless attempts- We enjoy wasting time thinking and reading useless stuff. Gone are the days when a student would give her blood and sweat to attain something. Our generation doesn't want to work hard and rather look for short-cuts and excuses. Above all, social media has made us its slave. It is advisable to keep the phone and other such items at bay and not to touch them while studying.
3. Go for what you are good at- Educationists and teachers, would recommend you to excel in your own field, unless you are miserable at it or have zero interest.
4. Right coaching, right approach- If you have decided to join banking coaching then keep in mind the following things before you enroll yourself in one.
- Investigate about the history of the institute, not just through their website.
- Find out about the faculty members
- Check the facilities they are promising to offer
- Fee structure
- Location and distance
- Speak to some ex-students or existing students
- Look up for their teaching schedule in advance.
5. Compare and contrast – It is the harsh reality of today, that genuineness and authenticity is an extremely rear thing. Sellers are desperate to sell and most consumers are trapped and fooled to buy the wrong product. Education is also treated as product nowadays and many Bank PO, SSC Coaching Institutes act like a shop. The only way you can differentiate between a good/genuine institute and a bad/fake institute is by comparing and evaluating them on various parameters
6. Don't be dependent on Google- Our too much dependency on Google can also land us in trouble. Searching for the right institute online has its own shortcomings:-
No Assurance – have you ever wondered how Google gives you instant results, it happens because of the' keywords'. Google does not understand your question, it only find results based on the keywords you use, which means it gives you a medicine without really diagnosing your ailment, so it ought to have harmful repercussions if you depend yourself too much on it.
Anonymity –You have no idea about the source you are receiving the results from, you read a blog without knowing the qualifications of the person who is writing it. Internet is like magic because it is the only way to give information whether right or wrong by staying 'anonymous' and 'invisible'.
Paid boosting – The top results that you see you on the internet are mostly all paid boosting.
Fake reviews – The reviews or stars that you think are the best way to know about whether the coaching institute is right for you or not, then you are highly mistaken.
7. Meri Padhai.com- meri padhai has made it simple and easy for you. We have brought the students, educationists, tutors, institutes and counsellor under one roof. Which is a relief for all the worried students and most importantly parents. We follow an intensive process to analyze your problem.

TALLY VAULT IN THE TALLY ERP 9 ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE
Without a structure, an organization will fail. Understanding the corporate structure is essential to running a successful business. The corporate structure is the combination of all divisions and attributes that are considered when forming departments within an organization.
Each department, such as Sales, Marketing and Finance, IT, and Operation, is important to an organization. Each department has its own goals that help in achieving the vision and mission. Many software solutions offer an identity assurance feature to help protect the company’s records. There are many software options available, but Tally is the best. However, there is no recommendation to use third-party software to do the following:
Encryption
Password Protection
Irrelevant records and traces
Tally users find it easy to set the password protection and protect their companies from being required to admit. Tally Vault is the only third-party required to set up the Tally business security password. Tally Vault Password, which is one of the records defense operations, is not required.

WHAT IS TALLY VAULT? WHAT IS TALLY VAULT IN TALLY ERP 9 ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE?
Tally ERP 9 encryption accounting software is used to secure confidential company files. Tally Vault is the name of ERP 9. It has many features that can be used by small and large businesses. EPR 9 was the most recent version of the software, released in 2006. To ensure minimal errors such as double entries, it records all business transactions. It can be customized in Tally to provide a solution for different types of businesses. The main features of Tally Vault are:
Secure Connectivity: This is achieved through licensing the product and software services.
Protected Transmission: Data is exchanged between Tally ERP 9 and Tally Tally. The transfer is secured by Tally Vault. The net server is compressed with an intensified version before transmission. This is called the Triple Data Encryption Algorithm. It occurs before the transfer process begins.
The message digests feature is used to detect corruption in data and any adjustments in the process for transferring data.
An administrator may give an informative user the right to verify the accuracy of entries. Approved users can then make any necessary adjustments. All listings that are audited together with any alterations are displayed at the request of the users.
Software is being developed by many organizations to maximize employee talent. This will allow employees to be assigned to projects that match their knowledge and expertise. Matrix structure is preferred by established organizations when they enter new areas. The tally structure is preferred for high-end brands that require a lot more skill and talent.
It is a reason that firms can get all their supplies in one place rather than spending time looking at multiple transmitters to find the applicable services.

Dreams Money Can Buy: The economics of a pay-as-you-go vagabond lifestyle
Since my last Facebook post about another jaunt across the world, several people have reached out to me asking the same question: how do I “fund my lifestyle” (copyright Emma). It dawned on me that A) lots of folks are looking to travel the world but B) are not sure how to do that realistically and responsibly. As an additional obstacle, people—even the vagabonds—often get weird and cagey when asked about their finances. Luckily, I’m 100% comfortable letting you know that I’m pretty poor and I’m still living what Cardi B and Chance might classify as close to—if not my best—life. I’m happy to share my strategies for the nomad life as someone who has never considered planning a strong suit and whose butt gets all itchy at the sound of the word “budget.” This is definitely not a how-to, but a how-I-do guide that hopefully can offer one perspective to those who, like me, dream of being homeless and financially insecure—I mean, wanderlusters. Naturally, each point is organized by subcategory titles borrowed from legendary and timeless songwriter Aubrey Graham. Started from the Bottom (now we’re still near the bottom)
Okay, not exactly the bottom, but not far off. I did have some savings before I started traveling, and I think that cushion was pretty important for my peace of mind/not dying famished in the streets. I set a (admittedly pretty arbitrary) bottom line that I would be comfortable—not thrilled, but not fully catatonic—to have when I returned to a more “traditional lifestyle.” I put that amount in a do-not-touch savings account. Luckily, I haven’t really had to dip into this kitty very many times. Though, again, I’m admittedly no financial wizard, I would estimate over the course of the last year I’ve netted about -$2,000. To me, this year, the amount of time I spent not working, and the amazing experiences I have had were worth significantly more than that figure.
God’s Plan/Controlla
You can plan your travels in advance to varying degrees, but it’s crucial to be honest with yourself about how much uncertainty you can stomach without anxiety sucking all the joy out of the cool stuff you’re doing. I’ve had people tell me, “Oh, it’s so crazy how you can just hop on a plane and not know where you’re going next. You’re flying by the seat of your pants!” Two things: 1) I hate pants. 2) More often than not, I do plan at least my immediate next move in advance. This isn’t so much a due my discomfort with uncertainty, but rather how frustrated I get when I’m forced to spend substantially more money on a ticket/room because I couldn’t commit in time. As a general rule, I plan international travel at least a month in advance and try to get things settled for big within-country trips a week before I leave. I make sure to search airline sites directly, especially for within country travel, and I don’t hesitate to call booking sites instead of reserving online to see if if they can cut me a deal—they’re out here looking for that commission. That being said, the best practice is to seek advice from people who have visited or, better yet, live in your destination. Not only can they steer you towards the right locations/companies/etc., they can also advise you when it might be more economical to book real time in-person as opposed to beforehand online (this happens quite a bit, especially in less-developed countries. Trip Advisor is not always your friend, yo.). Plan as much in advance as you need to in order to feel comfortable and excited, not overwhelmed and anxious, for your trip.
Hold On, We’re Going Home
Building off my last point, for me, having a space to unpack my borderline-hoarder amount of clothes and plug in my electric toothbrush is crucial to my mental health. Who doesn’t love a nest? Though a lot of people move intermittently between destinations, I was pretty settled in Lima. Before flying in, we booked a month in an Airbnb. I easily found a three month room to rent on Facebook/Craigslist, and used the same method to find two of my jobs (oh, sidebar—look for and join ALL online Expat groups as soon as you get to a country. Go to a language exchange and ignore the creepy older dudes who try to get you to “teach them English” and look for other expats who are probably new to the area, too). I also knew I was setting up base camp somewhere with an incredibly low cost of living, and that was intentional (Meygan’s intention, not mine, but still).
Mob Ties
This will be a small section, as it deviates from the financial focus of this piece, but I think it’s important: be proactive ASAP in making friends. It’s so, so easy in any city with a large expat population (again, join the Facebook groups). Expats are prone to be quite outgoing, likely share your interests, and probably have lower friend standards than you’re used to! Living abroad is like college, and all the other expats are your new floormates. There will definitely be some weridos, but you’ll sift through them and find the gems. Plus, traveling with friends makes things cheaper, so this section is totally relevant. (Nailed it.)
Hotline Bling
This one is straightforward: Make sure your phone is internationally unlocked and get a prepaid SIM card immediately in each country you go to. I’ve never needed to pay more than $20 a month for talk/text/data (you’ll only really need data) and it is PLENTY (how many of you are looking at your Verizon bill and fuming right now?). International plans don’t make sense in the long run and scrambling from Starbucks to random hostels for WiFi is not a good look.
Nice for What
One of the benefits of living abroad is that as soon as I moved, people started hitting me up to visit and/or meet them places. I’ve had the opportunity to visit magnificent destinations with magnificent friends, some of whom I hadn’t seen in years. If, like me, you’re overwhelming popular and well-liked, you have to be realistic and honest about where you can and cannot travel. Whilst on a budget and trying to function in day-to-day life, sometimes merging plans with friends looking to vacation is just not feasible. Compromising is great; it’s also valuable to let the homies know that this isn’t just a trip for you, it’s your lifestyle (did you just throw up a little bit as you read that? Me too. Sorry). I got super lucky and my friends who came and visited me in my more permanent location—Peru—didn’t force me to go to Machu Picchu 96 times! Every country has a bunch of cool stuff to do, and they were more than happy to meet in Colombia, hop on a jungle excursion, or otherwise with plan something that was in my budget/I hadn’t already done.
In addition to being realistic with my budget and with other people, I had to be realistic with myself, which involved some reprioritizing. I haven’t really bought clothes in the last year. I didn’t make my usual music festival rounds. I wasn’t planning to see my family for Christmas. My shoes, which have amassed an innumerable amount of miles, are essentially all falling apart. Time and time again, I chose experiences over things and I couldn’t be happier with that decision.
Nonstop
Having a job, regardless of the wage, always makes me feel better about spending money. You can make money in a variety of ways, but here’s a hot tip: TEACH ENGLISH ONLINE. I AM NOT KIDDING YOU I WOULD NOT HAVE DONE WHAT I DID THIS LAST YEAR WITHOUT IT. There are a myriad of companies (I’m with VIPKID—lemme talk to you about it and get some $$ for helping you apply) that allow you to set your own schedule and teach online from anywhere with a strong WiFi connection. I taught every weekday in Peru from 6:30 am to 9:00am (and an occasional weekend evening) and was done with my workday by 9:15 in the morning. I was also able to teach when I came back to Kansas, when I was home in California, and when I was traveling, Plus, I get money for referring you desperate plebs.
Let me tell you why VIPKID is infinitely better than getting an in-person job (even teaching English) abroad:
The hours and location are 100% flexible. I can open my schedule weeks in advance or the night before, and I can teach fifteen classes in a row or one single class.
There is no lesson planning. Prepping for teaching is an evil succubus that lures you in and steals your time and also several parts of your soul. The VIPKID platform offers ready-to-use lessons that have a universal structure. I don’t even glance at them before I start teaching. It’s the most low-maintenance, easiest form of instruction I’ve ever been involved with.
You don’t need to worry about getting a work visa. For all the work I did in Peru, I was paid cash under the table, as getting a carnet de extranjera (similar to a green card) is time-consuming, expensive, and difficult. I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like this is the case in most countries.
Yes, I make $20-$25 an hour, which can make you feel no ways (real Drake fans will catch that Easter egg), especially if you’ve been making a steady salary in a a place like New York or SF (let’s not get into it here, but all the more reason to advocate for not paying/treating our teachers like trash). However, it’s consistent money, I can do it anywhere, and $20 goes real far in most places outside the U.S.
The Catch Up
That being said, the side-hustle is EVERYTHING. Proofreading, translating, tutoring, working remotely, waitressing, bartending—anything that doesn’t require a lengthy application process and set hours is ideal. While I was back in the States, I very quickly and easily got a temp job working in my mom’s radiologic imaging office; I got to experience an entirely different line of work and gossip and eat donuts with the girls in the front. I absolutely loved it.
Apps like Grabr or housesitting apps are also excellent ways to make money doing stuff you’re already planning to do. Grabr allows travelers to sign up to bring things to people in their destination country that take too long or are too expensive to ship from their country of origin. This utilized two of my strongest skills—ordering items from Amazon and packing a checked bag weighing exactly fifty pounds. On my trip from the U.S. to Peru, I made over $300. Did I bring a kitchen scale and finely ground white electrolyte powders through South American customs? Yes! Did I assume I’d be going to Peruvian jail? Maybe! Honestly, I was more concerned about the giant car part leaking oil that I brought through TSA in Kansas City (thought about leaving a “This is not a bomb note”—decided against it). The point is: it might have taken a little time, some research, and a bit of aplomb to find opportunities like this, but luckily I had all those things in spades. Disclaimer: Use your judgment. Don’t do weird stuff.
Also, in all honesty, got a pretty cute tax refund this year, seeing as I made a significantly larger sum of money in the half of the year when I was full-time employee in California than when I was a part-time degenerate in Peru.
All Me
As resourceful and savvy as I’m feeling after writing this, I have to come clean. This might be a bit of a bummer for those fiercely independent amongst you: I did not even come close to doing this without a ton of help from my ridiculous circle of incredibly generous family and friends (HAHA GOTCHA, IT WAS NOT ALL ME. SEE? SEE WHAT I DID?) My list of people to thank would surely earn me the wrap-it-up music at the Oscars, but I’ll try anyway: My parents helped my broke ass get home so I wouldn’t be alone for Christmas. My friends from all across the world and all phases of life let me crash with them for weeks at a time (and gave me cute clothes that “looked a little weird on them,” made me banana flaxseed pancakes, and did my laundry). My brother and his smokeshow wife bought me flights and let me move into their giant British mansion to be their nanny (they don’t have kids). My saint of a mother literally gave up her bed and shared her tiny apartment with me, advocated for me to get a job that meant her doubling her workload, and let me eat all her food while standing at the refrigerator like a teenage boy. People have given me advice, contacts, hotel points, and miles. Gratitude will forever be the brush with which the memory of this year was painted.
All in all, I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive, life-changing experience with the joys far outweighing the stresses. It’s not hard to do, and I hope this very Emily-specific example can be of some help to you. Remember, you too can shirk all your responsibilities and run away to a foreign country! Even if you’re 25 sitting on 25… cents.
P.S. If you liked this post, please send me shoes.

Evaluation
The aim of this module was to introduce us into starting our own business. This involved exploring our professional identity, looking into taxes, copyright and creating our online identity. Throughout the module I created a web page, Instagram account and an unbinable CV. Because I already had an existing graphic design account that was from a previous module, I decided to create a web site aimed for getting onto courses and placements. I decided on just a website and Instagram due to the requirement being we needed to have a social media page. I kept my web page simple and straight to the point. Containing a range of my work and a short “about” section. This was designed with the people doing the selection being remarkably busy and would require all my information as quick as possible. For my unbinable CV I settled on creating a mug. This was because of the nature of work I would be applying for and the usefulness. The bonus is how easily circulate the CV would be. I spent a large part of my time thinking about and coming up with my work identity. With my logo creation I opt for a combination of hand a paint pallet in the shape of a brain. The outcome of this module had been having a bare basic set-up of going into self-employment, something I will not be doing. I originally had wanted a much more professional selection of assets which are ready to use. With being uncomfortable of having too much of my identity revealed online under my legal name, I took extra caution with what online presence I would have. This is because I understand that your online reputation could break or make your career. With my industry being so small, I wanted to avoid getting a reputation for being someone who does not update their social media (as this is worse than not being on social media). I do plan to be using it however I do not have the desire nor energy to be managing an online presence successfully. I do not want to be the sort of person who shares the same content over all social media platforms, this will require a lot of work and planning on my part to keep it up. Because I am using my pages to get work/placements I thought having the visual social media with a main web page would be the best option. Therefore I opt for only an Instagram page for now, which will mostly be showing additional work and process. I would also like to do more development to my logo before I start handing out my applications. It currently does the job but I feel the overall quality lacks, once I get better at using softwares I will be able to create a much better logo piece and CV. Further to this I also want more portfolio pieces that show a range of mediums. Once I finish that I will be happy to start networking. There was not many good experiences from this module other than playing with colours and completing the work itself. There was a lot of bad experience throughout this module, starting off with being unaware that this module had already taken place a semester prior. This left me with a lot to catch-up with that my peers have had advance notice of doing. It was stressful and I found it difficult to focus properly. I also experienced a lot of difficulty during this module with being listened too about issues I was having. Then there was additional ongoing peers issues. As a result I was isolated a lot and struggled to remain focused with a lacking of support or knowing who to trust for the support. I believe this contributed to a lot of the disinterest in not only the work but the course itself. As a result I found it difficult to focus on each topic fully. I think my outcomes would have been more true to my usual standards has the additional issues not taken place. I tackled this by using the pomodoro technique, something I discovered last semester and have been expanding on since.
The things that did not go well and was a bad experience fell to a lack of communication and organization, from both sides. The major one being, me not being aware of the lessons already taking place. I never saw an email announcement of timetable changes. Nor was I confronted with this physically by the tutor, even when there was opportunity to do so. I have a good reputation with being a responsible student, so it was out of character for me to not show up to a lesson and not communicate my absence. None of my peers brought it up either or asked if I knew. This was an issue not only because peers had a head start and I was now starting at a different point, making peer feedback difficult but I had also missed out on any lessons and discussion that took place prior. This meant I was self-teaching myself pretty much the entire module. Peers began to use my absence as an excuse to exclude me, this made getting feedback from them impossible, undesirable and I did not feel supported. I was also lacking information that may have been valuable for my studies. Another issue was the work task themselves, I found having to repeat an identical task from a prior module is incredibly challenging. Having to come up with a new name, new sites and other things only adds to the pressure of maintaining a professional online appearance. Due to the lack of sense it made, I struggled to commit myself fully to the tasks. It also created me a lot of additional issues as I am not training to be a designer, which was made clear prior to joining the course.
A lot of support came from the resources on a free educational youtube channel called The Futur. The channel offers essential information for designers that have been informative during a difficult educational period. Each video is rich with professional experience and up to date knowledge from sucessful working designers. It has allowed me to learn relevant information I will need to get hired. It was through this channel that I discovered how social media should be used efficiently and effectively, how to talk about your work ready for interviews, how to set up my portfolio and how to make sure I really want to be a designer. This helped a lot with the design aspects of this module. However, because I was struggling to come up with another design business name, when I wasn’t even going to be a designer, I negotiated with my tutor to do one more focused on my actual career goal. This made things slightly easier but I later faced issues of not having much of a portfolio nor did I want personal data on the internet just yet until my online identity was going to be a solid one. Because of the unique path for my chosen career, I also needed to do additional research on what type of experience I will be needing, I used professional universitie’s youtube pages which gave advise on what they look for in a portfolio and what experience they value. These were informative and offered me a lot of tips and tricks. With this I was able to make the conclusion that a simplified website would be my best option to go. Over the summer I will be further developing my portfolio with some products from this semester that I wish to expand with.
From all of this I have learned how to adapt a brief that does not fit my personal career criteria and make it work for me. I experienced growing pains on how to handle situations in which one is excluded and provided a less than acceptable quality of service. However, in the future I know how to navigate these situations better and who to go too and when. Next time there will be no hesitation.
The situation could have been made more positive had communication took place. A few of the tasked had no planned lessons with them, which resulted in me waiting around for instructions. Typically I would give-up, go do work and discover some kind of discussion have taken place but it felt more casual conversations than a structured lesson with learning opportunities within them. I decided to start using the scheduled lesson plans as time to work on projects of my choice. It would have been better had there been more engaging lessons for some tasks, even if it was a short amount of time. It lacked professionalism and was something I could have done myself without paying thousands of pounds in the process.
Skills I would benefit from developing to help with a situation like this to improve it would be, being more tenacious. Having a stronger resistance to adversity and more developed skills around illustration and typography. The ongoing issue I have with typography is relating to as a communication. I can see it but not entirely sure how to do it. Having better “done and dump” it skills would also benefit me, to allow me to move through project a bit easier. This is something I repeatedly find myself getting stuck at and with the new style of deadlines and lessons, I don’t have the time I once had to let things sink in and develop. I need to keep rushing through.
Things I could have approached different during the module would be approaching my tutor and asked why there was no email sent out about the timetable changes and request to have 1-2-1 time to make up for the error. There were also a few additional things I would have liked to have produced had I had more time and access to equipment. There are things such as a video version for my 10 things activity, a more professional looking infographic, the time to be able to create my own font, be able to take more time to do illustration images and create my own icons. Video editing is something I want to look into doing more of, I created some in my first year and have seen the value of it during a few of the modules this semester but I have not had the equipment or time to explore with them.

Sim Shagaya’s uLesson African edtech startup raises $3.1M
Nigerian founder Sim Shagaya is back with a new startup — uLesson — that has raised a $3.1 million seed round led by TLcom Capital.
The venture is integrating mobile platforms, SD cards, culture-specific curriculum and a network of tutors to bridge educational gaps for secondary school students in Nigeria and broader Africa.
Founded in 2019 by Shagaya — who also founded Nigerian e-commerce startup Konga and ad venture E-Motion — uLesson is headquartered in Lagos with a production studio in Jos.
The startup has been in development phase and plans to go to market in February 2020 in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Gambia — Shagaya told TechCrunch on a call.
“We’re targeting Anglophone West Africa…for a market of effectively 300 million people,” he said.
On product demand, Shagaya notes the priority placed on education across West African households vs. structural deficiencies — such as student teacher ratios as high as 1:70 in countries such as Nigeria.
“We have this massive gap…We’re adding more babies in this country nominally than all of Western Europe…Even if the [Nigerian] government was super efficient, it couldn’t catch up with the educational needs of the young people that are coming up,” Shagaya said.
To address this, uLesson will offer an app-based home education kit for students with an up-front yearly subscription price of around $70 and the option to pay as you go. The startup’s product pack will contain a dongle, SD card, and a set of headphones to connect to Android devices.
Curriculum on the uLesson program will include practice tests and tailored content around math, physics, chemistry, and biology. The venture has already created 3000 animated videos for core subjects, according to Shagaya.
To leverage high android mobile penetration in Africa — and minimize data-streaming costs — uLesson content and performance assessment will come via a combination of streaming and SD cards.
Parents and students can connect online temporarily to update the app and sync curriculum and results, while operating off-line for the bulk of lessons.
Shagaya likened the use of SD cards to the old Netflix model of sending and returning DVD’s by mail, prior to faster and more affordable internet service in the U.S.
The uLesson program will also package a human component. The startup plans to deploy a network of counselors in major distribution areas to instruct on how to use app and follow lesson plans.
uLesson is to be a supplement to secondary school education and a more affordable and effective alternative to private tutors, explained Shagaya.
After taking uLesson to market in Africa’s most populous nation — Nigeria — and other countries in the region, Shagaya and team plan to adapt the product for a future East Africa launch.
In both Nigeria and Kenya uLesson will face competition from existing ventures. Edtech in Africa doesn’t have as many companies (or as much VC funding) as leading startup sectors fintech and e-commerce, but there are a number of players.
Source: Briter Bridges
Nigeria has online edu startups, such as Tuteria. Feature phone based student learning company Eneza Education has scaled in Kenya and expanded to Ghana.
uLesson could count having Shagaya as CEO as one of its advantages in the edtech space. The venture marks the founder’s return to the startup scene after a hiatus. Shagaya earned a Harvard MBA and worked for Google before repatriating to Nigeria to found several digital companies.
His best known venture, Konga, went head to head with online retailer Jumia in pioneering e-commerce for Nigeria and Africa. Konga was sold in a distressed acquisition in 2018.
Shagaya successfully exited his digital advertising venture E-Motion this year, after it was purchased by Loatsad Promedia.
The Nigerian tech entrepreneur confirmed he’s redirected some of that windfall into uLesson’s $3.1 million seed-round. As part of TLcom’s lead on the investment, partners Omobola Johnson and Ido Sum will join uLesson’s board, Sum confirmed to TechCrunch.
For his part, Sim Shagaya underscores the for-profit status of his new startup, while noting it carries greater meaning for him than past commercial endeavors.
“If you drill down to it all, all our problems in Africa are tied this problem of education…If we do this right, our impact will be huge. For me this is probably the most important work I’ll do,” he said.
Diving deep into Africa’s blossoming tech scene

But the situation is still the same for the schools and colleges as the students are still encouraged to stay at home due to long time closures. The Best Online Jobs for Teens 18 Years of Age and Under (Mom-Approved)
https://120profit.com/?p=2453&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr Some of the links in this post may be from our sponsors. Policy Page There’s no shortage of online jobs for teens to choose from. And that’s a good thing since being a teen these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. Places to go, people to see! It’s a time of your life when so much is happening and changing, doing things with your friends is so important. Keeping up with peers in terms of fashion, the latest technology, etc. while maintaining an active social life — is it any surprise that teens are looking to earn extra cash? Not to mention the sooner teens start saving money and managing it wisely, the better off they’ll be as adults. With college fees looming and the safety net of living at home soon to be removed, earning extra money is the best thing that many teens can do. Luckily, we live in an age where there are good paying jobs for teens all over the internet. If you’re looking for the best online jobs for teens, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the best teen jobs on the web today. Online Survey Sites For Teens Companies are constantly trying to improve their products for the next generation of buyers. And they’re willing to pay for valuable opinions to help them do so. That’s what makes paid online surveys one of the best online jobs for teens today. Some people are put off by survey sites because they see the small amount that you get from them. However, they’re a super easy way to make extra money while binge-watching the latest Netflix series, and they are real online jobs for teenagers that pay. Survey Junkie Survey Junkie is an online survey site where you answer questions and give your opinions. Companies use this market research data to improve their products for their target audience. For each survey you complete, you receive points. In Survey Junkie terms, 100 points equal $1. Once you get 1,000 points ($10), you can redeem them for PayPal cash or free gift cards. Surveys take anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes to complete. Typically, the longer the survey, the more points you can earn. To learn more, check out our complete Survey Junkie review. Swagbucks Swagbucks is one of the most popular survey sites around. The fact that they offer a free $10 sign-up bonus probably helps. According to their website, they’ve paid out over $288 million to users to date and give away over 7,000 gift cards every single day. Swagbucks works much the same way as Survey Junkie. Take surveys, earn points (called “Swagbucks” or SBs), and cash out for gift cards or PayPal credit. However, Swagbucks offers more than just surveys. You can also earn cash by watching videos, shopping online, searching the web, playing games, buying gift cards, and more. It’s free to join, and the surveys range in point value from 1 to 1000 SBs. The number of points you need depends on which prize you choose. Most of the surveys pay at least 60 Swagbucks, and 500 Swagbucks will get you a $5 Amazon gift card. If you want to find out more ways that you can earn money with Swagbucks, check out our full-length Swagbucks review. Earning Station Earning Station is a well-established site that offers paid market research opportunities. This site, like many of the others on this list, operates on a point system. You can earn Station Dollars by completing online surveys, shopping online, playing games, and doing various other online tasks. Station Dollars can then be redeemed for gift cards to your favorite retailers (Amazon, Walmart, etc.). Our favorite thing about Earning Station is that it’s very user-friendly. All you do is create an account and choose the types of activities you’re interested in. Then turn on Netflix and start making some extra cash. MyPoints MyPoints is owned by Swagbucks, so the two are very similar. Right now MyPoints is offering a bonus — earn $5 when you take your first five surveys. A great thing about this site is that if you take the prequalification questions and don’t qualify for a survey, you still receive 5 points. You can earn up to 25 disqualification points per day. MyPoints gives you the option to redeem points for gift cards, PayPal cash, or get travel miles if you have a United MileagePlus account. CashCrate CashCrate is another survey site pays cash for your opinions. In addition to online surveys, CashCrate also rewards you for shopping online, playing games, and referring new members. For every person you refer, you get 20% of their future earnings. New surveys are available daily. CashCrate will also send you surveys specifically curated based on the demographic information you fill out in your profile. So in order to get the best-paying surveys, make sure your profile is complete. Make your first $3 with CashCrate just by signing up. Tutoring Jobs For Teens Tutoring is a great way for teens to make extra money. Here are the best tutoring sites that hire teenagers. SameSpeak SameSpeak pays you to teach students from other countries how to speak natural English. The students also have formal English lessons, but they learn faster by conversing with a natural English speaker (that’s you). To participate in SameSpeak, you must be at least 16 years old. You will also need a computer with high-speed broadband access, a headset with a microphone, and a Skype account. The coaching sessions last 30 minutes, and the payout is $10 per half hour that you complete. Once you have $100 in your account, you can withdraw your earnings via PayPal. SkimaTalk This site is similar to SameSpeak. With SkimaTalk, you conduct 25-minute sessions with students via Skype. After you sign up for an account and complete your profile, you’ll need to complete a few simple tests. Once you’re approved, you can set your availability and rates and begin teaching. In order to teach with SkimaTalk, you must be 18 years or older. You’ll also need the same equipment as with SameSpeak — high-speed Internet, headset, microphone, and a Skype account. SkimaTalk teachers are paid once per month via PayPal. Writing Jobs For Teenagers Freelance writing can be a perfect online job for teens because you can fit it around your schedule. You are probably used to writing assignments at school, so why not get paid for it? Upwork On Upwork, businesses post jobs and freelancers submit pitches to apply. The fees on this site will range from job to job, but there are many freelancers out there who have started on Upwork and gained repeat clients from it. The fee structure is based on your lifetime billings with each client: 20% for the first $500 billed 10% for total billings of $500.01 to $10,000 5% for total billings above $10,000 Upwork isn’t just for writers. Other categories include marketing, web development, customer service, and design to name a few. Bid on projects across several categories to find what most interests you. Fiverr Fiverr is another digital freelancer marketplace. As the name suggests, you can buy or sell for as little as $5. Jobs on this site are referred to as ‘gigs.’ Typical gigs include graphic design, digital marketing, writing and translation, video and animation, programming and tech — basically anything that you can do online. This is a perfect site for website owners to come and get services on an ad-hoc basis. You can price your gigs however you want. If you take a look at the gigs that are available on there, there aren’t actually that many for only $5. You can also tier your offering with additional services at a premium price. If you’re handy with design, technology, words, or a host of other online skills, you could easily make good money from offering your services on Fiverr. Textbroker Textbroker doesn’t pay quite as much as other freelance platforms, but it’s still a good way for teens to make some extra money. One of the benefits of writing on a site like this is that you’ll get a lot of good practice (the more you write, the better you tend to get). You’ll also build a portfolio you can use to pitch higher-paid writing jobs. Your fee depends on whether the job is an OpenOrder, DirectOrder, or TeamOrder: OpenOrders pay per word and depend on your quality rating level. You can choose from thousands of orders at your preferred quality level. A DirectOrder is an order that is sent directly to you. This could either be because a client has worked with you previously and wants to work with you again, or because they have seen your profile and are impressed enough to reach out and work with you. If you have a Direct Order, you set your own rate per word. TeamOrders are for working with the same clients consistently. These projects are open to any author on your team on a first come, first serve basis. The client sets the rate per word for the whole team, and there is no limit to how many teams you can join. Other Legit Ways for Teens to Make Cash Online Tutoring gigs and paid surveys aren’t the only ways for teens to make money online. Here are some more ideas for inspiration. Cafepress Cafepress is an online gift shop or, as they claim, the world’s best online gift shop. You create items to sell, and they do the marketing for you. Popular categories include: Men’s clothing Women’s clothing Accessories Baby clothing Home and decor Drinkware Stationary Stickers and signs You can design your own products on there by heading to the ‘Design Your Own’ section on the website. Select the product that you want to design and use a Cafepress designer to produce the item. The amount of money that you make depends on how much markup you put on your items. You get to choose how much to charge, so it’s entirely up to you. In the Cafepress marketplace, you will earn 5-10% of the sale price for whatever you sell. Instagram Instagram isn’t just a place to share photos of your food or your furry companion. It’s also a platform that you can use to earn some serious cash. Just look at some of the biggest Instagram influencers out there who earn thousands per post. Yes, you read that correctly. Thousands! The amount of money that you are able to make depends on how many followers you have, how engaged they are, and the size of your influence. You can make money from sponsored posts, affiliate marketing, or selling your own products or services. There are other ways to make money on Instagram, but these are the main ones. Care.com When you create a free account with Care.com, you’ll be matched with people in your area who are willing to pay for your services. Care.com offers various opportunities to make money, such as childcare, pet care, housekeeping, and more. You set your own rate. However, Care.com provides a handy calculator to help you determine the best fee to charge. Input your location, years of experience, and availability, and they’ll give you suggestions for how to set your rate. You can also see what other people in your area are charging. Sitter City Similar to Care.com, Sitter City offers services for a babysitter, nanny, pet sitter, housekeeper, or elderly companion. Again, creating a profile is free and easy, and you choose your own rate. Results for each site may vary depending on your location. If you want to make money by providing any of these services, you’ll get the most options for potential matches by signing up for both. Etsy Etsy is a site where you can sell (and buy) unique, handmade, and vintage items. If you’re a crafty person, this is a great site to sell and make money on. Most people think you have to know how to knit or create elaborate jewelry to make money on Etsy, but that’s not necessarily the case. I know several people who sell printables on the website (usually things like inspirational quotes) that do really well. I also know someone who’s had massive success on Etsy selling simple handmade jewelry and leather bracelets. The amount of money you make depends on what you sell and how much people are willing to pay for your items. However, the income potential is massive. Slice The Pie Slice The Pie is a website that pays people for reviews. You can review songs, clothes, commercials, and more before they go live. Your feedback helps artists, record labels, and brands make important decisions about their products. Some reviews will pay you more, which you’ll see on the Category page. You will also get paid more depending on the quality of your review and your star rating on the site. For example, a 1-star reviewer earns $0.03 per track review, while a 5-star reviewer makes $0.15 for each track reviewed. Cash out via PayPal once your account hits $10. You also get bonus points for referring your friends. Teen Jobs: Tips For Getting Started Keep these tips in mind when searching for the best ways to make money online as a teen. Get a PayPal Account As you may have noticed from reading through this list of online jobs for teens, most sites pay via PayPal. Therefore, in order to accept payments, you’ll need to sign up for an account of your own. Setting up a PayPal account is easy. In order to complete your account, PayPal will send a couple small deposits to your bank account and have you verify the amounts. That means you need to set up your account ahead of time. If you wait until you’re ready to transfer your earnings, you’ll have to hold off a few extra days. Keep Your Parents In The Loop I know it’s tempting to keep things to yourself, but if you’re suddenly earning extra money and not explaining where it’s coming from, your parents are going to be worried. For your own safety and benefit, let them know what you’re doing. Tell them how you’ve been researching all kinds of online jobs for students to earn money. A strong work ethic, particularly from a young age, is very impressive and they will appreciate your initiative! Which of these online jobs for teens have you tried? Let us know in the comments! 120profit.com - https://120profit.com/?p=2453&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr
