New Zealand Part 1 (Week 11)
One of the beautiful things about studying at UNSW is that during week 6 of our studies, we get a flexibility week where the majority of courses don’t hold class and students are given the chance to catch up with schoolwork, get ahead, or do nothing and just relax! My hostel-mates and I knew about this opportunity from the day we got here, so a big trip was always in the works. We even knew that we all wanted to spend the time in New Zealand. The only problem? There’s 18 of us living in the hostel together and we’ve had enough trouble planning trips for just 5 or 6 people, let alone 18. Everyone had a different vision of what a trip to New Zealand could look like between camping, or renting cars and staying in AirBnBs, or living out of campervans. Needless to say, the trip planning was procrastinated all through the 4 weeks of summer and another 4 weeks of term 1. Once in a while someone would say, “Guys, we really have to plan this. Plane tickets are getting expensive!” and they’d be met with more approval and support than a professor who has suggested extending a homework deadline. But, as expected with our group, no action would be taken. Until one person sits down and buys themself a roundtrip flight to New Zealand, nobody is going anywhere. Soon enough, after intense procrastination and discussion, tickets were bought, plans were made, the group of 14 (four couldn’t make it) had divided into two campervans and two cars (who would be staying in AirBnBs), and I was sitting on a plane to Queenstown.
Tumblr media
^^ Landing in Queenstown
Queenstown may not be among New Zealand’s 20 largest cities, but it is renowned for its adventure sports and stunning scenery, earning it the nickname "Adventure Capital of the World," as my friend Elizabeth would say. Our adventures in Queenstown, however, were put on hold until the end of the trip as we had a road trip planned that would take us up north to Christchurch and then back down to the Adventure Capital. So, on our first day there we picked up our car rentals and headed to Fiordland National Park for a quick hike. The greenest plants, mossiest rocks, and most colorful mushrooms riddled the paths and made our short hike one of the most memorable.
Tumblr media
^^ Some New Zealand Flora
I also felt a lot safer hiking in New Zealand compared to Australia. New Zealand has none of the snakes that Australia is infamous for and has an almost negligible amount of dangerous spiders compared to the numbers Australia boasts! With our glow worm cave tour waiting for us in Te Anau, we had to get back on the road quickly. Lucky for us, there are worse places to be driving than one of the most naturally beautiful countries in the world where mountains surround you in every direction and lakes bluer than the sky itself pop up out of the blue (pun intended) every few moments. We weren’t allowed to take pictures in the glow worm caves, but imagine yourself sitting on a boat in a pitch black cave with little blue/green specks scattering the ceiling. That was pretty much it! It was interesting to learn about the glow worms themselves – they glow brighter the hungrier they are (to better attract flies) and they’re actually larvae, not worms, so they just need to survive long enough to turn into gnats and reproduce. You may be wondering why I’m sharing so much detail about random worms. Well, as a recent trivia night attendee (two weeks in a row), I see every random fact as a future topic in trivia. You can thank me later.
Tumblr media
^^ Just the average roadside view while driving along the west side of the South Island!
Milford Sound was next on the list. Just a two hour drive from Te Anau with the option of a bus service to shuttle you there and back, Milford Sound is a large fiord stretching 9 miles (or, 15 km should I say) to the open sea. Once there, a boat cruise takes you down to the ocean and back while passing waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, and some popular scuba diving destinations. Milford Sound was highly recommended as an activity on our itinerary, and it truly lived up to the hype! From the stops on the bus ride to the scenic cruise, I was in a constant state of awe that I will never forget. The rest of the trip was just as exciting, but I’ll cover it in the next post! Until then, Cheers!

Tomorrow I leave Japan and its going to take almost 3 days to get to my new house.
Check out is at 10am Thursday so I have to leave then. During the day travel to Haneda airport, but the flight to Sydney isn't until 10:45 pm.
Arrive in Sydney on Friday morning. Spend all day waiting at the airport to fly to Christchurch in the evening.
Spend Friday night at a hotel, in the morning pick up a rental car and drive south to Dunedin and arrive at our new (temporary) home on Saturday evening.
It's a much longer trip than I'd hoped for, but I'm looking forward to getting there.

How to Plan Your Next Vacation Conveniently? Some Tips
Stepping out for a long-awaited vacation is a dream come true to most individuals spending most of their time working hard throughout the weeks and months. If you are also wondering to take a break and go out for a solo trip or a vacation with the family, pre-planning will be the best thing to do to stay miles away from the hassles of unavailability of flight tickets to hotels. Start with deciding the location and booking the premium economy flights to Barbados if it’s a Caribbean destination you are heading for. Following it, book the hotels, sightseeing tours and even a rental car for your vacation.
Here, check out some tips to plan your next vacation conveniently—
In the first place, you have to make it clear whether you want to explore a new destination solo or with your partner whether as a traveller or a tourist. Travellers usually avoid planned tours despite pre-booking the Premium Economy flights from Perth to London or anywhere else, as they wish to explore the places on their own terms with a map instead of a pre-planned itinerary.
The tourists on the other hand follow an itinerary whether self-made or designed by their travel agencies. Enjoy a hassle-free vacation from boarding the premium economy flights to Christchurch to reaching out a pre-booked accommodation in a nice resort. Later, you can explore the local sightseeing tours in sheer comfort by purchasing a packaged tour.
Particularly, if you have the family with you, you have to be concerned about your safety. Therefore, with the help of a reliable and reputed Online Travel Agency- or OTA, pre-book a packaged tour to New Zealand, Australia, Dubai, the Caribbean or anywhere else. Let them get you the return tickets of Premium Economy flights to Cairns from London or wherever you went at a time for a safe and guaranteed return on the given date.

Say no to "YES" Rentals
We had recently been to New Zealand and the trip was awesome. Unfortunately, our trip ended on a bitter note. Self drive is the easiest way to explore New Zealand, I believe. We had rented our vehicle from Yes Rentals, Queenstown branch. They gave us Toyota Aqua Hybrid which had almost completed 80k kms but still was well maintained.
We stayed in Christchurch for 3 days and on one of the day while I was taking reverse in the parking, the car got slightly hit on the back. Since I was in the parking area I was slow and thankfully it did not damage a lot. I had completely forgotten about it until the last day when I came back to Yes rentals to return the car. The operator there noticed the scratch and immediately called it out.
This is the scratch
Tumblr media
I said, ok, yes, the scratch was my mistake so I need to pay for it. I went in the office, the operator took the photo of it and sent it to his manager. He said I need to check with my boss to know how much needs to be paid. We waited for a while and the operator said you need to deposit 1000 NZD. We will check how much the cost of fix would be and return the remaining amount to you in 7-10 working days. I was shocked, I mean definitely it was not worth 1000$. It was such a simple scratch but then I thought it must be their process of taking this minimum amount irrespective of the severity of the damage so I just complied.
They asked me to fill up some form. Based on the questions in the form it was to be filled when you met with an accident. It asked when did accident occur, did you call the police etc. I definitely did not call police because of a scratch on my car :P It was end of our trip and I felt really bad to pay 1000$ for a scratch that could have been avoided. However, we had a flight to catch so we left anyway. On the airport, I thought I should have told them to take 100$ or 500$ max and should not have accepted the 1000$ that they asked me to pay upfront. After this thought, I felt more sad because I paid 1000$ + 2.5% transaction charge (25$) and I was also going to lose on exchange rate twice because of this too and fro money transfer. As I was feeling restless, I emailed them from the airport asking for estimate of the fix and how much time it will take to return the money. However, they didn't have answer to both of them.
I returned the car on 2nd March and it was 12th of March today but still there was no response from them so I send them an email asking the same question again where they mentioned that repairs are scheduled to be completed next week. I mean for me it is max 15 mins job to fix this. I think fix is a very big word for it, you can spray paint the car with the same color as your car and that's it. I am not sure why they are taking so long to "fix it".
Waited for another week and after few more follow ups invoice was generated and shared with me. You will not guess the amount they charged me to fix the scratch. The repair costed me 981.24$ . I cannot stress it enough on this 981$. I mean look at the scratch once again.
Tumblr media
How can you attach 981$ to this? I mean I am angry and laughing at the same time. How dumb do you think I am? Definitely, me agreeing to deposit 1000$ for this little thing was not the smartest thing I did but charging 981$ for this scratch was stretched too far. They quietly returned me 18$ and said Thank you for choosing YES rentals.
Their detailed invoice looks like this :
Tumblr media
I was actually out of words seeing this crazy invoice. I asked them to explain what does this "Real Bumper Panel Repair" mean and why is it 3 in quantity to which they replied that charge is based on 3 hours of repair work billed at 85$ per hour. They also invited me to cross verify these prices from reputable repair companies in Queenstown.
Me being a coder/developer have done quite a lot of freelance work and charging 85$/hour is not that uncommon in tech area but this 85$ for mechanic/auto technician is so much more. No offence to them but it is what it is. So I did some research as they had invited me to and found this
Tumblr media
So from 26$ median range, they are charging me 85$. What are you fixing? NASA spaceships?
I get so hyper looking at this every time I remember it. We had lot of emails back and forth where they tried to explain me that Queenstown is an expensive place so rates are higher than rest of NZ etc. I said I understand that since I have stayed in both USA and Switzerland which are more expensive than NZ but still my head just cannot justify this 981$ for the scratch. I mean look at the scratch and put 981$ - this number against it to fix it. I simply can't accept it and the fact that you think this is "reasonable" is making my blood boil even more. I also told them that there is no way to verify these 3 hours. Who knows if you actually worked for 3 hours? Here number 3 was selected so that it solves the equation to come up with a number close to 1000$. If I had paid only 500$ upfront then hourly rate would have dropped to some less number, number of hours would be less as well and everything would be adjusted accordingly. Basically start working backwards (1000$) and find a way to produce a bill that fits the equation. 18$ were returned to make this look like a genuine company and not to make it an obvious scam.
My wife was waiting patiently till now but really got frustrated with these emails and gave them a 1 star on Google review to which they threw their standard reply. We understand your disappointment but you should drive safely and buy insurance from us (so that we can loot you further).
However, I was still fighting with them (over emails) about how non-sensical it was from them to charge me this much. On 20th of March I got an email from the manager of the Queenstown branch and she told me that she has looked into the matter closely and would like to offer me 150$ if I remove the negative review on Google (and also stopped emailing them).
So please if you are planning to go to NZ, use Yes Rentals!
Tumblr media
Lol, you wish!! I told the manager the same thing. What you are charging me is completely unacceptable and does not make any sense. To which manager replies to me that we do not want be stuck in this unpleasant conversation, do we? Just take this 150$ and shut up. Obviously, I am paraphrasing this.
I have been keeping a watch on their Google review since my wife posted the negative review and after her review within 24 hours there were 7 , five star reviews. I doubt how many of them are genuine reviews. For me it felt that those reviews were there to cover up after her review. It achieved two objectives : 1. The newest reviews are the positive review 2. Overall average is maintained.
In the last 15 days, I have not seen their average rating move at all. It has been steady on 4.3 in spite of so many reviews. It looks as if they are trying to maintain that number by manipulating it. I know it is not difficult to buy reviews in this day and age.
I did not accept that 150$ as well because I don't think 830$ is reasonable amount for that scratch and additionally I wanted to write this post. Like their technicians, my hourly rate is very high as well and 150$ is definitely not going to cover it.

March 19,2024
Driving day from Franz Josef to Queenstown. According to Google Mapit is 6 hour drive. It took me 7 hours because of frequent stopping to check maps, take a break and road works.
The route I took was the major “highway”,Route 6, linking the South Island north to south on the west coast, is used mostly by the tourists — there are not may people living on or near the route. It is all one lane each direction with all the bridges one lane for BOTH directions as can be seen in one of the pics. I passed more than 10 of these single lane bridges today. The third from the last pic was a road closure. The road (Rt. 6) was closed when I got to that point. I waited there 20 minutes before my direction was open. Some people who got there before me must have waited a lot longer. There are not many people live in New Zealand. It appears that most people live in and around Auckland, Christchurch, and probably in Dunedin. Most people I came to contact with everyday are young foreign “working holiday” visa holders, so they don’t know about this country or around the town if I ask questions. After driving 7 hours or so I arrived at the Queenstown Airport where I drop off my rental car.
The airport is the one I will fly out of New Zealand in a week.

Auckland to Christchurch
Suzie was able to drive me to the airport and of course 10 minutes before we were going to leave, I got an email saying that my flight had been cancelled and I had to reschedule my own flight. Luckily I was able to book a 1.40 flight for that day. Just meant I was going to be at the airport earlier than I needed to be. I really have gotten a lift to the train station then make my way to the airport but at least with Suzie taking me, I’m there and didn’t have to worry about time. I bought breakfast and a word search puzzle at the airport while waiting and definitely made sure that I was on the 1.40 flight. The flight was fine (just over an hour) and the guy next to me so looked like Jason Mamoa. I ended up with a $10 food voucher - I think that was because I had to be on a new flight. I made sure that when I landed I called the people at Jucy to be collected from the airport this time and not waste money on a taxi. I was so worried getting the van time cos the flight was now a lister one and the Jucy Van rental place closes at 4! Got there at 3.30 but the line was huge and didn’t leave with the van till just after 4. This time i had a green van not a white one like I did in the north island. I checked onto the place and checked out where I was staying. Was nervous again but this time about the van - the whole area was grass and it was raining all night. Didn’t want to wake up in the morning and not be able to move the car. Once I knew where I was, I went to the shops and bought food and drinks for the week. After the shop I took a shower - ended up being a cold one which didn’t help it being cold outside. The wifi also kept cutting out but had downloaded a few episodes on Netflix

Things to Consider Before Hiring Motorhome
Tumblr media
Campervans and motorhomes are fun; that's why many people look for campervan hire in Christchurch, NZ. A campervan vacation will be a memorable experience, and you will cherish it for the rest of your life. However, motorhome holidays are fun, but hiring a campervan is a big commitment, so one must do thorough research before taking a stand.
What Are The Things That One Should Consider Before Hiring Campervan?
Many assume that motorhome hire in Christchurch will be very expensive, but that's not the case. You can have a cherishing, fun, and convenient travel in a motorhome at affordable prices. Though the prices will still be a bit high, the fun it provides makes the charges worthwhile. Traveling in a campervan feels like traveling in the comfort of your house. So if you are planning to hire a campervan, then the following are tips that you should consider before finalizing: -
Package Inclusions
Though most campervan companies include all the essentials in the package for their client's convenience, you should still check your package inclusions. Generally, kitchen equipment, child seats, camp table & chairs, and linen & bedding are part of the package; however, it may differ depending on your package.
Taxes
The Government has imposed Goods and Services Tax (GST), so you must check whether the operator includes it in your package. However, the operators will surely add GST, but it is best to double-check to prevent any last-minute fuss.
Age Restriction
The Government has imposed an age restriction on renting and driving the campervan. Generally, a person around 21 years or above can rent and drive a campervan, but it's best to confirm the rule in your country. Besides this, people 75 years or above must submit a current medical certificate to rent and drive a campervan.
Depot Opening
Unlike car rentals, campervan hire needs the client to collect and return the vehicle at the depot. Car rentals deliver the car to the airport, hotel, or given location, but this is not the case with campervan rentals. In the campervan, the customer is responsible for timely dropping the motorhome at the depot. It allows easy management of the campervan for the company.
License
You can drive a motorhome with a valid full driver's license. However, you must note that a person with a probationer or expired driving license is restricted from driving a motorhome.
Compare Charges
Before finalizing a company, you must enquire about the services, packages, and charges of different campervan renting companies. By doing this, you will get a rough idea of the expenses. Besides this, some companies also customize the package for the clients, so if you are willing, you can also opt for a customized package. Finally, after comparing the charges of different campervan companies, you can finalize anyone that fits your budget and needs.
Wrapping Up
Considering the tips mentioned above, your holiday will be full of joy. Moreover, hiring a campervan from a good company can enhance your experience. While traveling, your safety should be your first concern, so you should hire a campervan from a reliable and certified company. Always opt for motorhomes that are in good condition and won't betray you in a deserted area. If you are looking for a Queenstown campervan hire, you can refer to CamperCo.
