Tyneside tram crash, Nos 27 & 23, Oct 1913
flickr
Tyneside tram crash, Nos 27 & 23, Oct 1913 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph of Tyneside Tramways and Tramroads Co. (TTT) tower and engineering car No. 27, and open top car No. 23, at Neptune Bank depot/repair shed, Wallsend, after their accident. The accident took place near Bentons Farm, when at approximately 07:00 on the 18 Oct 1913, in heavy fog and on a single track line, the works car ran straight into an empty passenger car coming in the opposite direction. The passenger car motorman and conductor (who was also on the front platform) both died, of the six people on the works car only one was not seriously injured. There are no details on the photo reverse, if anyone knows who the photographer was please message me and I will credit them. No. 27 was built in 1911/12 by the United Electric Car Co. running on a Preston/Brill 21E truck. It had a tower for overhead line work, a crew compartment, and an open area for equipment, etc. It was repaired after the accident and in 1920 was fitted with an English Electric passenger body seating 24/35, keeping the original truck, electrical equipment, and fleet number. No. 23 was built in 1903 by Brush seating 31/55 and running on Brill 27G trucks. After the accident it was repaired with reinforced platforms and put back into service. Both cars were burnt at South Gosforth by a scrap merchant when the tramway closed. The parts of the TTT tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Apr 1930. If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Thanks. 📷 Any photograph I post on Flickr is an original in my possession, nothing is ever copied/downloaded from another location. 📷 -------------------------------------------------

Hadrian’s Wall Path Day 7: Field – Bowness on Solway 30 June 2017
4.30am, first light. I am glad to get up and move. I trudge slowly onwards. I am fortunate and the drizzle has eased. Easy terrain, but hardest day of walking. My feet and knee feel sorry, but my mind feels happy. I hobble forward and fill my belly with sugar. I walk through another small village and come to the Solway. The salt marshes are a scape I have not witnessed before.
Reivers used to be rife in this area. They would wade across the river at low tide and raid farms for livestock and anything else of value. You can tell which are the older farmhouses as they are fortified from those times. Sometimes they would just steal the church bell. The Scots in the north were Catholic then, and will steal the English protestant bells, and vice-versa.
I walk past a signpost with a coinbox underneath. The signpost points many ways, to New York, Wallsend, Bowness on Solway, Rotterdam, and more, with the mileage to each. I tap the box with my walking stick and move on. Before I reach Bowness a car stops near me. An old fella asks if I want a photo with his sign. He can put any city on it and the mileage. Some Londoners asked him to put Pluto on it and he did so. He finds his stories amusing. He can put Sydney on, it is the furthest distance away from this point apparently. He can drive me back to the sign and then drive me back to this very spot. I politely decline.
I reach Bowness, and the end of the path not long after this. I chat with some middle aged American women starting the path from here, and relax for sometime. I have three hours until the bus back to Carlisle, where I can get a train.
I go to a teahouse to charge my phone and have a warm drink. I did it. 84 miles, 16 forts, 79 milecastles, 160 turrets. I don’t buy the certificate of completion. I do buy two cans of beer. I take them to a spot overlooking the river Solway. The opposite bank is the Scottish border. I watch the border. Border watch. No reivers.
There were haaf netters in the water however, as a man walking his dog pointed out to me. He reminded me of Alan Alda. Haaf netting is a technique originally used by Vikings. You carry a rectangular net supported by a wooden frame and set the front opposing the tide. When a fish hits the net, the legs of the frame are allowed to float to the surface which traps the fish. The fisherman clubs it, then threads it to his waist for safe keeping. It is the only place in the world they still use this technique. The man leaves once Milo, his disobedient sausage dog catches up.
I reflect. On my journey I had taken a fancy to finding fruit picking work. Good physical work. Cheap rent on the farm. I could save money, and work on my creative projects in my spare time. This became my greatest ambition. Scrap the original plans for further hiking in Norway.
I listen to the Good Son by Nick Cave and close my eyes. Another moment of déjà vu overcame me. A great sense of achievement and a feeling I was in the right place right now. I enjoyed it greatly while it lasted. Then it finished and I caught the bus to Carlisle.
I have no plans and want to stay somewhere cheap. But the one hostel is fully booked. I ponder sleeping at the train station. I am desperate to clean and dry my clothes. My feet are aching. It is less painful to walk barefoot so I remove my boots.
I walk out of the centre to a launderette. But it is closing. They all are, as I see on my phone. I walk back to the city centre and have a beer and a burger. I book a bed and breakfast on my phone. I was reluctant to spend so much for a room. But tonight I look after myself. A good bed is in order.
Vallum House B & B is very close to the launderette I painfully walked to and fro earlier. I do not become frustrated. I catch a bus and the driver is very kind. He knows the B&B I am heading for and calls out when it is my stop. He calls me chief, I call him boss.
The guy at reception is an older fellow who hopes I will be having some drinks. “Couple of four X’s tonight mate!?” He picks me as an Aussie, and when he calls a lady from the kitchen to show me my room he says, “Careful being alone in a room with this one love, he’s an Aussie, so he likes it downunder!” He cackles at his double entendre. “Oh it’s rather hot in here,” the lady says, and fans herself with her hand.
It was like something out of pre-political correctness British sitcom. I do not go downstairs for a drink. I shower and listen to music and hang my wet things on the window and give myself some attention.
My feet ar\\re transformed. There was a large blister between my big and index toe on my right foot. I fear it is Staph. Tinea thrives between the other toes. My pinkies are more callous than regular flesh. I regret walking barefoot. But the insides of my boots are no cleaner than the ground. I do not worry myself over them, no point in that. I simply resolve myself to make things better and sleep deeply.
