Local backups through Time Machine, cloud-based backups, and clones all serve a great purpose to keep your data safe in case of an unfortunate even that renders your Mac useless (even temporarily). The thing that makes cloning different is that you can create a bootable copy of your entire hard drive, which means you can access everything on one Mac through another simply by exporting it to an external drive, connecting the drive to the other Mac, and then selecting it from the Startup menu.Ĭlones are great to have around if, for example, you have to take your Mac in for repairs, but still need to continue working while it's out.

CARBON COPY CLONER BOOTABLE BACKUP FOR MAC OSĬarbon Copy Cloner For Mac Os High Sierra Download You can use the cloned copy while it's in the shop. Most cloning programs have additional features that include the ability to make regularly scheduled backups. This is ideal since, if something happens to your computer, you aren't necessarily going to want to restore from a year-old backup. I highly recommend investing in these additional features if they are offered with the cloning program you are using (for example, SuperDuper! is free to clone, but costs a licensing fee of $28 for scheduling, smart updates, sandboxes, and scripting). Before you startīefore you get started, make sure you have an external hard drive with enough storage to fit everything on your Mac. The smartest solution is to use a portable hard drive.

You'll also need to download and install your cloning program. CARBON COPY CLONER BOOTABLE BACKUP INSTALL I'm using SuperDuper! from Shirt Pocket for this process. Most cloning programs operate pretty much the same. They will always have a detailed how-to guide to walk you through the steps.

I have been testing this setup for two weeks. Used CCC to copy my internal SSD to the External ssd.į. Booted to the SSD setup a test admin user.Į. Used Disk utility to erase and format 2tb ssd.ĭ. I have test the following it works for me.ī. It works two different ways I have and am using both:ġ. The iMac will boot from any bay in either enclosure usingĮach SSD show up in system preferences as a drive to boot from.Įach Drive will boot when selected as the boot drive in System prefs.Įach drive shows as bootable and will boot when selected when holding down Move both Cloned drives to every bay in the enclosure/ I think similar happens with CrashPlan.Ĭlick to expand. My System: 2017 iMac OSX 10.12.1, 1tb intern ssd.Ģ External Akitio Quad X 4 bay enclosures PS Booting from a clone can cause a lot of re-signing in to things and if you use BackBlaze it may "freeze your backup", and it stays frozen even after rebooting back to internal. The CCC recommended (hence default) way is to clone the Data volume only and either make it bootable when needed by installing a System volume onto it or using it to migrate from after an erase and install.

Between macOS updates both CCC and SD will update the Data volume normally. The System volume cannot be updated, so when there is a macOS update you have to erase and start again. To use ASR you have to erase the whole destination first. The only way of cloning the System volume is with the Apple ASR (Apple System Restore) process which is used by both. The principle limitation is because a bootable clone obviously requires both the System and Data volume to be cloned. I have tested both this past week on M1 MBAs with Monterey. Details here:Īs you can see the two companies are taking very different approaches to the same task with basically the same tools. Superduper! Has the same limitations and can also make a bootable clone. You have to use the LBBA (Legacy Bootable Backup Assistant) in CCC to make a bootable clone. Note that bootable clones are no longer the default method for CCC and are not recommended because of the limitations mentioned.
