Timeless travel
Let yourself be spirited to some of Britain’s most beautiful destinations aboard a vintage train
Modern trains might be convenient, but where’s their charm? They neither send out billows of smoke, nor whistle as they pull into stations. Meanwhile, Agatha Christie – or her characters – wouldn’t be seen dead on the carriages, as clean and functional as they might be. Where’s the crystal in the buffet car? Where is the buffet car?
Fortunately, several hundred steam locomotives and, even better, their carriages, still run in Britain – and on historic routes, too. Many are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most came out of regular service in the Sixties, and are now run by volunteers. Here, we visit some of the best of Britain’s heritage railway lines.
Belmond British Pullman
Looking for marquetry decorated with leaping antelope, deep-pile carpet or cut-glass tumblers? You’ve come to the right place. The 11 carriages of Belmond British Pullman – sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express – were once part of the Brighton Belle and the Golden Arrow, celebrity trains of their time, and display Twenties and Thirties glamour. They even have names, including “Audrey”, which has carried HM The Queen, and appeared in the Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express.
Destinations include Bath, York, Canterbury, Blenheim Palace and a new route to Stratford- upon-Avon. Pop-up dinners are hosted by Michelin star chefs such as Michel Roux, Jr and Raymond Blanc, while murder mystery lunches give you the chance to recreate those Agatha Christie moments.
West Somerset Railway
At 22.75 miles (36.61km), The West Somerset Railway is the longest heritage railway in England. And it has vintage appeal, too: parts of the line opened in 1862. Window seats offer views of the Quantock Hills, the sea and myriad villages. Explore the countryside from Williton Station, near the Coleridge Way – a 36-mile trail through landscape that inspired the 19th-century Romantic poet. Or from Crowcombe Heath eld, where you can take a one-and-a-half-mile circular walk, crossing a couple of railway bridges (look out for the aming leaves of the beech trees in autumn). Bring a bike to recreate Beatle Ringo Starr’s appearance in A Hard Day’s Night, where he cycles down Crowcombe platform. Or a bucket and spade, if you prefer the seasidey lure of Minehead, at the end of the line.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
You don’t get more historic than this route, if only because it was planned, in 1831, by George Stephenson, the Father of Railways. Today, the 18-mile (29km) heritage line, from Pickering to Grosmont, carries more passengers than any other in Britain. The heathery moors, marked by the quaintest of stations, are the draw. Both Pickering and Goathland stations, built in Victorian times, have been restored to their Twenties and Thirties glory. (The former appeared in Brideshead Revisited.) The War-Time Weekend in October will maximise the historical charm: expect actors in period dress to roam the area. Christmas will be even more spirited, with elves and mince pies. Even Santa thinks this railway is worth a visit, from Lapland, at his busiest time of year.
Bluebell Railway
Horsted Keynes Railway Station on the Bluebell Railway line. Credit: Alamy
The Bluebell Railway – the name of the line rather than a train – started in the Sixties, but its locomotives and carriages are considerably older. Most of the latter are pre-Second World War, and take it in turns to chug along the 11-mile (17.7km) route, largely across West Sussex. Trips are relaxed, starting or ending at Sheffield Park station, its Victorian charm restored. For afternoon tea on a Saturday, take the “Wealden Rambler” – the Victoria sponge could have been homemade. For a heartier meal, join the “Real Ale” train, offering a sausage-and-mash supper at a pub. Prefer to make your own trip? Buy an All Day Rover ticket. Look out for Horsted Keynes, on the way. The Victorian-era station has been restored to its 1920s days and appeared in Downton Abbey.
The Isle of Man Steam Railway
Train in the Laxey Valley. Credit: Alamy/Andrew Scarffe
This railway is the longest narrow gauge steam line in the UK that still uses its original locomotives and carriages. Want figures? It’s 3ft (914mm) wide and 15.3 miles (24.6km) long. Founded in 1870, it is, in fact, the remainder of a much longer network of more than 46 miles (74km). Today, trains chug away between Douglas, the capital of the British crown dependency between England and Ireland, and the best of the island’s sites in the south, including Port Erin, a Victorian seaside resort. The train is the most atmospheric way to reach the remains of Rushen Abbey, an ancient monastery, and Castle Rushen, a medieval castle. The highlight of the train itself is the restored dining car, built in 1905, with its maroon velvet chairs, plush carpet and starchy white table clothes.
The Jacobite
The Glenfinnan Viaduct
The Jacobite gets its name from the 17th-century political movement which fought for James VII of Scotland (James II of England) to be restored to the English and Scottish thrones after the Glorious Rebellion. The Jacobite hasn’t been going for that long, although parts of the line do date back to 1901. The 41-mile route (66km), up steep gradients and tight turns through the Scottish Highlands, includes lots of highests and deepests and shortests – from Fort William (near Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis) to Loch Morar (Britain’s deepest freshwater loch) to Arisaig (Britain’s most most westerly mainland railway station, where, on a clear day, you can see some of the Scottish islands). Could the line also be one of the most famous – at least by sight? It’s the one in the Harry Potter films. The Hogwarts Express sits at the Warner Brothers’ Studio Tour in London, but you still get to experience part of Harry’s journey over the 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct. And you won’t have to fight a dragon at the other side.

Meghan Markle sparks pregnancy rumours as she arrives in Australia carrying TWO purple folders in front of her stomach
The Duchess of Sussex has sparked a storm of pregnancy speculation after she touched down in Sydney clutching two purple folders in front of her stomach.
Meghan Markle was seen holding the items in her right arm as she stepped off the plane on Monday morning with Prince Harry, leaving fans of the Royal couple guessing what information they could contain.
For many, the folders added to speculation Meghan is expecting a baby, fuelling the fire sparked by the oversize blue coat she wore at Princess Eugenie’s wedding last week.

Meghan Markle was carrying two purple folders as she stepped off the plane in Sydney on Monday morning, while Prince Harry wore a grey jumper over a smart shirt
Social media users were quick to link the mysterious folders to her rumoured pregnancy.
One user said: ‘Calling it now. Meghan is pregnant.’
But others summised the Duchess was simply being organised to make sure she was across all the details and plans of her first ever trip to Australia.
The Duchess of Sussex was glowing as she held the folders while stepping-in to an awaiting car which took the couple to Admiralty House where the pair will spend Monday night
As Meghan stepped-in to her awaiting car, she found time to wave to the crowd which had gathered to welcome the Royal couple to Australia

Despite the long-haul flight from the UK, the Royal couple had beaming smiles when they disembarked the A380 aircraft
The folders fuelled the fire already sparked by the large blue coat she wore at Princess Eugenie’s wedding last week
Meghan Markle’s outfit at the royal wedding (pictured) sparked speculation she could be pregnant
One said: ‘Meghan Markle arriving in Australia with itinerary folders like everyone’s mum on their first overseas holiday.’
Actress Rebecca Gibney, speaking on the Kyle and Jackie O radio show, suspected the Duchess was using the folders to disguise a baby bump.
Kyle Sandilands asked Ms Gibney ‘why would she be carrying a folder?’, to which the actress replied ‘exactly’.
Jackie O, meanwhile, joked the folders were so big she must be carrying twins.
Social media users were some of the first to link the mysterious folders to her rumoured pregnancy
But others suspected the Duchess was simply being organised to make sure she had the lay of the land ahead of her first ever trip to Australia.
The motorcade carrying Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, makes its way through peak hour traffic on Sydney’s Eastern Distributor on Monday morning
While the public was intent on fuelling speculation about the next royal baby, the pair told a British newspaper in an interview prior to the tour they hoped to ‘start a family in the near future.’
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex touched down in Sydney on Monday morning for their first major international tour since getting married.
The Royal couple arrived in Sydney on a Qantas A380 flight from London via Singapore.
They will have a low-key start to their Australian tour, with official duties not starting until Tuesday giving them time to rest after the long-haul flight.
But the couple were greeted by discarded mattresses, chairs, milk crates, and pieces of carpet (pictured) as they arrived in Kirribilli
A heavy police presence greeted the couple at Sydney Airport, ready to whisk them to Admiralty House, where the couple were to be officially welcomed by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove at his sprawling Sydney harbourside residence.
They are accompanied by a ten-person entourage on the trip, which reportedly consists of press secretaries and a hairdresser.
Meghan’s best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney is also expected to join the couple on her tour.
A crowd of Royal fans turned out in the rain outside the Kirribilli address of Admiralty House to welcome the visitors.

But the streets of the suburb did not quite match up to the glamour as the visiting royal couple were greeted by discarded mattresses, chairs, milk crates, and pieces of carpet.
The arrival of the royal couple, organised months in advance, coincided with one of North Sydney Council’s fortnightly household waste clean up days.
As part of the trip, Prince Harry and Meghan will also visit Dubbo, in the New South Wales central west, Melbourne and Fraser Island in Queensland on their Australian tour.
It is the Duchess of Sussex’s first visit to Australia.
They will spend a week in the country and then on Tuesday, October 23 they will head to Fiji for two days and then on to Tonga before returning to Australia.

Cosy is a word that is used in this house on a regular basis. If you are Scandinavian or in my case, married to one, the word practically gets engrained into your vocabulary. The word cosy literally means “comfort, warmth, and relaxation” – a state of being that is necessary in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Having visited quite a few Swedish homes over the years I have noticed that they often have a few things in common, in that they are – light, airy, and filled with plants. As Sweden has around 6 cold and dark months per year, Swedes tend to fill their home with green plants, a colour that come Autumn, they don’t get to see for a very long time. Having lived in tropical weather for most of my life, the weather in England to me has been nothing short of gloomy. So when we got around to re-decorating our home this Summer (and had our carpets replaced with wooden floors) I decided to embrace the word cosy and bring a warm, yet light and green feeling into our home. From light coloured furniture and wooden pieces, to the ongoing additions of plants, we have slowly been getting our home and state of mind ready for the dark months ahead.
MID-MORNING FIKA
HANGING BASKET: PIXIE’S MAGIC HOOK | COFFEE: PERCOL | WOOL BLANKET: KLIPPAN | DALA HORSE: GRANNAS
Since becoming pregnant I have come to appreciate slow mornings, giving myself space and time to start my day. I found that since beginning my morning slowly my stress levels have gone down and productivity throughout the day has gone up. Slowing down makes it possible for you to be more present in your own life, and gives you the ability to better connect with the world around you.
We decided to place a hanging rack within reach to our bed in preparation for the busy and sleepless months ahead. We were given a hand-crafted hanging basket from Pixie’s Magic Hook, a perfect storage space for all things you need within arms reach. At the moment it stores a book, our reading glasses, and a night light; but something tells me that in the very near future it will be storing all things baby! The rack also holds a beautifully crafted woolen blanket from Klippan for those cold nights ahead, which quite frankly could not come soon enough.
As far as pregnancy goes I have cut down massively on the amount of coffee that I consume, and have been mostly sticking to the occasional Matcha or Chai Latte which have a much lower caffeine content. I did however indulge in a mid-morning fika last week when I received coffee from Percol, a fair-trade coffee company from London. Fika is a wonderful Swedish tradition which quite literally translates to “taking a break” – one which usually includes several cups of coffee (in my case one cup) and lots of baked goods.
COSY LIVING SPACE
CROCHET PLANT POT COVER: PIXIE’S MAGIC HOOK | FACE PILLOW: BLÄSTA HENRIËT |GEOMETRIC PILLOW: HETTY + SAM | CERAMIC MILK BOTTLE: HELEN REBECCA
Creating a comfortable and inviting living space in our home was my number one priority as it is the area where we spend most of our evenings together. For my bookworm husband, a cosy reading space was a must (the only arguments we ever have are about the amount of books he purchases on a monthly basis). I decided to put this little corner together using the second-hand chair and footstool which we purchased a few years back and accent it with a contemporary geometric pillow from ethical.market which is fairly made by Hetty + Sam.  The hand-crafted milk bottle ceramic vase also from ethical.market and made by Helen Rebecca fit beautifully with the accents of the pillow.
Our green storage corner which very much brightens up the room has both a fern plant and a palm plant (a great plant choice to purify the air in your home). Our lovely little fern sits snug in a hand-crochet pot plant cover from Pixie’s Magic Hook. A wonderful sustainable addition to the home, made from recycled cotton rope this plant cover can also be used as a small storage space.
The couch, my favourite hang out spot at the moment (there is some major couch potatoing going on as I am nearing my due date – less than three weeks to go, eek!) has been given the addition of a large eco-friendly linen pillow from ethical.market which has been screen-printed in the north of Sweden by Blästa Henriët.
PERSONAL CARE AND WELLBEING
SKINCARE TRIO: SEASCAPE | SMALL BALM: MOA | CANDLE: HOME OF JUNIPER | TOWEL & ROBE: THE MADDISON COLLECTION
Personal care and well being has become such a part of my life since becoming pregnant. Sure, I of course lived as healthy as I could prior to pregnancy too but once you have another person to consider in the equation when it comes to your body and state of mind everything changes.
I have been very weary about the products that I have been using on my body for the past 8 months, I have barely worn any make up, and have cut down on the amount of skin products that I have been using – mainly sticking to natural oils such as coconut oil to soothe my skin and soften my hair. I have however been given a few pregnancy safe products from Seascape which I tried out and absolutely loved. You can read more about my review on these products HERE.  A product which I am also very much looking forward to using this Autumn/Winter is an MOA organic multipurpose healing balm given to me by Home of Juniper an online retailer with a focus on conscious consumerism. This balm can be used for pretty much anything from chapped skin to soothing a cold.
I have never given much thought to the towels we bought for our home. These were products that in my mind were solely used to dry ones skin without a second thought as to what brand they come from. I can now tell you that my mind has changed once coming across  The Maddison Collection who’s soft and luxurious towels and bathrobes far exceeded my expectations. I have come to appreciate that ones home is their sacred space that needs to be invested in. It was something that I took for granted whilst living in a warmer climate, as most of my time was spent outdoors. But having lived in the UK for a few years now, where the winter is not so pleasant, suddenly every space and product in my home gained importance.
And of course no room can have a warm and relaxing atmosphere without lighting a candle. As someone who loves candles I have made sure to place some in every room of the house, they do wonders to cosy up a room on those colder Autumn nights and I very much look forward to using the stag candle from Home of Juniper.

Upcycling waste materials is nothing new in the fashion industry. But the idea of swimming in the sea in a bathing suit made from marine litter seems to carry a certain special cachet – so much so that more and more luxury brands are combining their efforts in a drive to fabricate new materials. With household brands such as Adidas forging collaborations with environmental organisation Parley for the Ocean to weave beach waste plastic into their running collection, the stigma once attached to eco-fashion – that being green would inevitably lead to compromise on aesthetics or comfort – is finally lifting. With summer scorching the top of our heads, how about some beautiful one-pieces and bikinis made from sea waste? Davy J According to the latest report by World Animal Protection, 700,000 tonnes of fishing gear is abandoned in our oceans every year. This discarded tackle could get wrapped around turtles, entangle fish, cut into the flesh of seals – worse still, it could take years for these synthetic nets to biodegrade. The damage to marine life could therefore go on for a long time. Davy J turns this to good account, by making all their swimsuits out of 100 per cent regenerated nylon yarn from waste such as ghost fishing nets. By 2020, the British brand aims to accomplish 60 per cent closed loop recycling, meaning it will find a way to reuse old items returned to the brand. Its dedication to its product take-back scheme, just one among other initiatives to reclaim its fabrics – has earned it a Butterfly Mark from London-based online database Positive Luxury, which looks at the sustainability credentials of luxury brands. Calling itself a swimwear brand “for the wild”, Davy J’s apparel is designed to survive more strenuous water activities like cliff jumps and diving. Finally, however, it is a swimsuit to swim in – without having to worry about undone bikini strings or awkwardly displaced tops. Shipping: £25 (US$33) international shipping fee, to be dispatched within two weeks.
Lilliput & Felix Launched in London in 2014, Lilliput & Felix opened the doors of its Asian headquarters in Singapore last year. The lifestyle brand, which is committed to using conflict-free gemstones and ethically sourced feathers, works with local suppliers and refrains from using PVC which is non-biodegradable. Reclaimed textiles such as recycled fish nets make up the bulk of the brand’s raw materials, while leftover fabrics are donated to schools and charities. The brand has been awarded Positive Luxury’s Butterfly Mark for its beneficial environmental actions such as donating a percentage of sales to a philanthropic cause. It also uses environmentally-friendly packaging involving recycled or recyclable materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Sustainability takes on a meaning a stitch deeper than materials in the brand’s line of beachwear and swim attire. Most of its timeless pieces are shaped in multi-tie cuts to easily fit all varieties of the female form, like the Artemis dress below.
Shipping: HK$72 (US$9) international shipping with tracking.
Mara Hoffman New York-based brand Mara Hoffman staunchly adheres to its sustainable ways down to the very last detail. The simple aesthetics, clean cuts and often bright monochromes can easily flatter every kind of body shape. Among the fabrics the brand sources is one that is 100 per cent regenerated nylon fibre braided from industrial consumer wastes, consumer waste like fishing nets and other fabric scraps. It is trademarked ECONYL. It also uses compostable poly bags for shipping, and hang tags made from recycled paper. The brand, which launched in 2000, has been busy minimising its impact on the environment from production, packaging to shipping since 2015. It is now a member of the global alliance the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, which involves it in collaborative networks with like-minded textile brands.
The location of manufacturing operations is also a calculated matter, as the brand is keen to set up factories near to the sources where raw materials are grown so as to reduce the carbon footprint from delivery. Shipping: US$15 international shipping, delivered within 12 business days.
Galamaar Galamaar, which originated in Los Angeles, believes that conscious consumerism is the New Wave, and is determined to be part of it. Their swimsuits are manufactured from a durable techno-fabric made of nylon from discarded fishing nets. They will therefore last longer in your wardrobe without stretching over a few swims. From the pad inserts down to the hang tags and packaging, the brand is devoted to making the smallest possible impact on the environment. We’re loving their blend of minimalism and retro classiness. Their high-waist cuts accentuate the legs, like the Oh Margot! one-piece here: Shipping: US$45 international shipping, delivered within 10 business days.
Batoko A member of the UK marine charity the Marine Conservation Society, this independent brand was founded on the north west coast of England. A certain percentage of Batoko’s sales goes to the society, which organizes beach clean-ups and spearheads petitioning for the legislating of environmental protection policies. The brand’s swimwear is entirely recycled from plastic bottles and scrapped goods such as carpets. The whimsical patterns are digitally printed onto the vegan fabrics without harmful chemicals. Their factory in China abides by the BSCI Code of Conduct to avoid exploitation not just of the environment, but also its people. Many of the brand’s prints feature wildlife fauna and flora – think Great White sharks, orcas, huge banana leaves patched on bright neon colours. Even without built-in padded cups or wires, their swimsuit is supposedly tested to support up to an E cup with its firm fabric. Shipping: £10 (US$13) international shipping with tracking, delivered within four weeks.
