Joy of Giving: How This NGO in Mumbai Turns Small Acts of Kindness into Big Waves of Change
Small acts of kindness create a ripple effect that inspires others to do the same, and eventually a big wave of change comes about. The Debabrata Auro Foundation (DAF) exemplifies this truth every day through its heartfelt initiatives, such as distributing books to children, providing meals to daily wage workers, empowering widows with livelihood tools, conducting free mega medical events, and awareness campaigns and so much more. Recognized as one of the Top 10 genuine NGO in Mumbai in 2025, DAF is committed to setting up a foundation for compassion and social responsibility for tomorrow.
Creating lasting change through simple acts
The joy of giving is like throwing a pebble into a pond; the ripples spread out in all directions, inspiring others to take part and make a difference in their and other’s life too. Spreading joy is like giving a gift that keeps on giving.
Tumblr media
The DAF is the philanthropic arm of The Esthetic Clincis India, where a share of the clinics’ profit is directed to meaningful causes. DAF’s work encompasses healthcare and social good, making it a unique NGO in Mumbai. Donors of the foundation get the benefit of the 80G tax exemption.
With its every small act of change, DAF has transformed hundreds of lives in the underserved communities of Mumbai and beyond. The aim is to make today better and tomorrow the best.
Bringing joy to young learners
DAF believes that access to basic and good education is the game changer for holistic development. In the years 2023 and 2024, DAF organized several book donation drives across Mumbai:
Book Distribution at Bhandup MVR MPS School
A distribution drive was conducted for young students. 61 nursery rhyme books were given to the students, spreading the joy of early learning. For many of these children this gift was the first experience of owning a brand-new book. This event started a trigger of endless possibilities for children by triggering their imaginations.
Book Drive at Prajapur Pada Anganwadi, Aarey Colony
This drive was organized on December 8, 2023. Anganwadi children were gifted 33 all-in-one rhyme books in the area. The event was sweetened with the distribution of sweet treats (healthy biscuits) to the children. As a top NGO in India, DAF initiated this mission to give a boost to educational development for the young preschoolers in one of Mumbai’s most underprovided areas.
Nourishment of body and soul: Aahar initiative
The Joy of Giving Project, the Aadhar Initiative, was an event held on August 26, 2024, at Shree Manav Seva Sangh Children’s Home in Sion West with the aim to provide healthy nutrition to children in the area. The event touched the lives of 125 orphaned children. The Aahar initiative is not just a physical meal but a means to share emotional nourishment for all.
The children received
A healthy and wholesome meal of dal, rice, vegetables, and chappati.
Basic stationary kits containing pencils, sharpeners, scales, and erasers
Cupcake dessert to sweeten the day
This initiative is a testimony to DAF’s commitment to holistic child welfare and continuous efforts to meet the educational and nutritional needs of the young minds in the country.
Empowering women through livelihood support
Sewing Machine Donation to Mrs. Sabita Lodh, December 5, 2023
In collaboration with the Jai Hind College Rotaract Club, DAF donated a sewing machine to Mrs Sabita Lodh. Mrs Lodh was struggling to support her family of two daughters after the untimely demise of her husband. She could not leave home to work outside because of responsibilities and restrictions; this sewing machine gave her a lifeline to earn a respectable living.
The girls were given toys, bringing in a small moment of joy in this difficult phase of life and letting them know that they are not alone. This gesture helped Sabita gain confidence in earning a livelihood and restored hope to the family.
Clothing with compassion
Maxi Gown Drives, January 1, 2024
DAF partnered with Gurukripa Vikas Sanstha and Beghar Niwas Sanstha in Dombivli to conduct the maxi gown distribution drive for women in need. The maxi gowns were collected, sorted, and distributed by the DAF volunteers. The event fostered community engagement and empowerment as the volunteers interacted with the destitute women, making them feel seen and supported.
Mother’s Day celebration, May 14, 2023
Spreading joy at the King George V Memorial’s Old Age and Handicap House, DAF celebrated Mother’s Day with the residents, who often go unacknowledged during celebratory occasions with
Cake cutting
Distribution of 16 maxi gowns
Healthy lunch for 55 residents, sponsored by a generous donor, Ms Khushi Mange
The elderly residents of the old age home response to the warmth and companionship by the DAF volunteers was heartwarming.
Reaching out in Time of Crisis
During the lockdown in COVID-19, DAF stepped in to help the daily wage workers, who were left without jobs or food, and served over 400 cooked meals daily. The wholesome plate contained chapatis, chana, and vegetable curries. This was their small part in helping the workers through the tough times, reflecting DAF’s agility and dedication in responding to humanitarian needs.
Why Debabrata Auro Foundation stands out
DAF is well recognized as one of the top 10 NGO in India 2025 because
It has deep grassroots impact, i.e., from slums to schools to old age homes, DAF reaches where it matters most.
All initiatives are documented with measurable outcomes.
DAF partners with educational institutions, local trusts, Anganwadi, and law enforcement to amplify the impact.
Encouraging others to pay it forward
The joy of giving spreads itself, inspiriting others to follow suit. DAF believes that by showing kindness to someone, you are setting off a chain reaction that will reach countless others. You don’t need to be a millionaire to make a difference; just a small step is enough. By donating a book, sponsoring a meal, contributing to awareness campaigns, or lending a hand in cleaning drives, your contribution can change lives.
Kindness is contagious. The Joy of Giving is not just generosity; it is a simple way to restore dignity, nurture dreams, and create opportunities. The Debabrata Auro Foundation, with its diverse and impactful initiatives, is creating big waves of change.

What Should You Consider While Buying Your Electric Roti Maker
Tumblr media
Roti makers are becoming increasingly popular, in the era of fast living. This electric kitchen appliance is a boon for those who find less time to cook at home and who wish to eat homemade, hygienic and delicious chappatis. But it is important to buy roti makers of high quality, as it should not burn the dish and make it soft and delicious. Here are a few points of concern that one should keep in mind.
Analyzing the Functioning: A chapati or roti maker is an electric device that is meant to make the lives of people better. They operate under electric power and transform a dough ball into a flat roti, by applying pressure from both its base plates. The plates then generate heat, which cooks the roti, making it soft and fluffy. It is multi functional and is possible to cook other dosa varieties as well by using it as an open pan and without pressing its handles. Choose a machine that caters to all these working functionalities to realize the best value for the money spent on them.
Understand the Use: Roti makers are meant to ease out the difficulties associated with making chapatis, they should ideally make excellent rotis of 1mm thick within a few minutes and should be able to cook other tiffin varieties such as uttapams, dosas, parathas etc.
Look into the brand name of the roti maker: choose a reputed and well known brand, so that its customer support team is really available for after sale service and repairs. Inspect the product thoroughly before choosing to buy it for faults and repairs. Especially, look for the on/off indication light bulb to avoid accidents while cooking, especially when kids are around.
youtube
Griddle material: the griddle or the heating plates of the rotimaker are generally made of forged aluminum. Check for the aluminum made body as it helps in equal heat distribution and cooks roti evenly. The griddle plates could be of a non-stick layer so that the flour doesn’t stick to it and does not demand use of oil on the surface. Though roti makers of different sizes are available, it is a smart option to buy electric roti makers of 8″ to 10″ in diameter.
Temperature: The cooking surface of the electric roti maker should be able to attain 425 degree Celsius for better results. But power factor depends on the material used to cast it, the griddle size and so on. 750 watts is needed for a griddle of size 10″ and 250 watts is needed for its cover.
Safety: Since the roti maker operates under power, it is important for it to be made of shockproof body. Accidents associated with power leakage are to be avoided, check the safety standards of the brand before buying them.
Taking these factors into consideration, roti makers are an awesome tool for any kitchen and could be used by bachelors, working women, students easily and its importance should not be neglected.

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful creative month. This month I worked on so many quilts. I am tidying and clearing out my room and finishing quilts gives me the feeling I am accomplishing bigger, things than with cross stitch or embroidery. Also, I’ve discovered a love for hand quilting which is good because my Kenyan quilt top is almost finished and can’t wait to start quilting it.
Scrappy picknick quilt
This is a quilt I never expected to finish. I started this one because I love scrappy quilts and I had a lot of material from an experiment to finish. The experiment was to find good materials to use for foundation paper piecing quilting technique. In that technique, you sew fabric pieces on a background which makes it easier to make neat pieces. In this quilt, the background served to hold all the pieces together. This was especially important because I used a lot of stretchy and flimsy fabrics.  In the next two weeks, I’ll write a full post about how I made this quilt.
The reason I finished this quilt is because of the discovery of my hand quilting love. This quilt is finished by sewing through the separate layers with glow in the dark thread. It is such a soothing meditative process to quilt by hand.
Experimentation with paper piece materials

Scrap quilted picknick blanket
The Nearly Insane sampler quilt
Progress! I am doing the Nearly Insane sampler quilt 100% by machine and to make the quilting process easier I am using the ‘Quilt as you go‘ technique. In that technique, you first quilt through all the layers of the quilt before you assemble the pieces.  This sampler quilt is originally made by Salinda Rupp and the pattern is made by Liz Lois

Kenyan quilt update
Nothing much to say about this one. Still assembling the blocks and stripes in a quilt top and it’s looking gorgeous so far.

The Dear Jane sampler quilt
Same story as with the Kenyan quilt above: slowly making progress and looking gorgeous.
Dear Jane quilt block G-7: Indianapolis
Dear Jane quilt block H-6: pie sale
I’ve almost finished 100 of the middle blocks! 98/169 done.
The Dear Jane hand quilting sampler
Spring magical SAL cross stitch
This Easter me and my mom participated in a wonderful cross stitch stitch along (SAL).  The SAL was hosted by Galdra who hosts a multitude of awesome cross stitch SAL’s which make me wish I had time for them all. You can find more information on her website: Magical quilts and more. For this cross stitch, during the Easter weekend every four hours a part of the pattern dropped. Unfortunately, I did not keep up with the SAL at all but made Chappati instead which is an awesome Kenyan dish.
Making Chappati
Next month my cross stitch will be finished and turned into a beautiful biscornu, that’s a promise.
Tumblr media
New backpack experimentation?
This is still such a youthful project. My wish is to learn how to weave one day and here are my first attempts. I’ll probably quilt the woven piece onto a background fabric for some additional strength. This piece is woven with recycled T-shirt strips, but I am still experimenting with which materials to use. I’ll write a blog post about this when I have more to share. If you know any good sources to consult about weaving I would love to here because I am guessing here which is a lot of fun, but some technical information is always helpful.
Weave experiments with T-shirt yarn
The end: how am I doing, how are you doing?
Months go by so quickly. I’ve already been back in the Netherlands for two months now. The weather is improving so quickly as well! When I arrived here it was cold, like ‘hot water bottle cold’, but now it is ‘wear a dress without stockings’ warm, which I love. But how are you doing? How is the weather and some questions for you to get to know you:
What is your proudest achievement this month? Not necessary sewing-related
Which sewing-related project did you always wanted to try?
What would you like me to write about
Tumblr media
Did you miss a post this month?
‘Look behind the lines’ miniature quilt and a quilt exhibition
The Nearly insane quilt blocks showcase
The Dear Jane quilt: seeing red, am I mad?
I’m back! Or: Monthly Sewing Update March 2019
Next week’s post:
Scrappy picknick quilt & Dear Jane colours: seeing green
See my DeviantArt or Instagram (username: bella.g.bear.art) for more artwork and WIPs. You can also follow my blog by clicking on the button on the left or by filling in your email address. There will be a monthly update at the end of every month and a new blog post every Sunday or Monday.

Livin’ La Vida loca
December 18 - 20
When one talks of living in a new country, we focus on jet lag, time differences, cultural variations, etc. But one more topic should be added to the list: domestic differences. No not the kind where Abhishek and I argue. But the kind where I cannot understand the gizmos in the house and they cannot understand me.
First, the Induction cooktops. My house has a four hub cook top. Now it is all very well to have special cookware, but getting the cooking right is like juggling three balls. Set the heat too high, and the food gets stuck to the bottom of the pan; too low, and it’s under cooked. Take your eyes off it for a second, and everything boils over. It takes me a large part of the first eight days to figure out the right temperature settings for milk, curries, rice and other dishes.
The pressure cooker, however, is another matter. Too low and there is no whistle for a loooooong time. Too high and it whistles like crazy but the lentils are raw. Plus I live in perpetual fear that one day I’ll find the cooker’s turmeric coloured contents spattered on the white tiled kitchen wall. And the chappatis are cooked but don’t blow up like a balloon. So I spend the first three days getting the temperature right and then figure out How to Phulao the roti— press with a moist cloth.
The dishwasher thankfully speaks my language, so no issues there. But once in a while it reminds me of Akshobhya refusing to spit the water after rinsing his mouth– when my bowls come out filled with water after a wash cycle.
The microwave and I are gradually getting to understand each other. Mostly it behaves itself and does what it’s told. But like my kids it hates Dal. So every time I reheat dal, some of it gets splattered inside— just like Akshobhya spat in my face at 8 months on tasting dal for the first time. But since Akshobhya doesn’t do that anymore, I am hopeful for the microwave too.
The oven and grill are as yet untried, since my stuff is still in transit. But I am sure it won’t be difficult.
The garden sprinkler system is of course another story. Its form of ‘tech speak’ is totally Greek to me. I still haven’t figured out how to make it work. And even the instructions manual so helpfully left by the landlord doesn’t help. So now my hopes rest on the gardener’s weekly visit. Maybe he’ll help us get acquainted. Meanwhile the plants get their biweekly quota of water from a green hose, also kept by the landlord. Perhaps he anticipated my (or the plants’) predicament!
The home security system is a tough cookie, as it should be– but not before we can switch it on. After several failed attempts at even turning it on, we have now decided to read the thick instruction manual cover to cover and then try it. Till then it’s over to the two locks on the front door to keep us safe.
The air-conditioning is trouble of another kind. Downstairs the house is freezing and upstairs is barely cooled. After three miserable nights saved by the open windows, we call the homeowners. They send across a really tall (really, really) technician from Daikin to fix it. The guy just reaches for the roof vent (no ladder or stool), opens it and then stands on tiptoe to look in. He cleans all the air filters and then climbs the roof to check the outlet and then jumps back into the house through the open vent. Some loosened clamps later, the Ac is functioning properly.
Our new washing machine is a Bosch front loader. I figure out how to get it to work, but find the laundry room floor flooded when it’s done washing. Two days of mopping up after every wash, drives me nuts, so I get the husband to take a look and find the source. He finds that the water outlet pipe of the laundry room has a tiny side spout that’s missing a cover. So every time the water drains from the machine, the spout throws it out onto the floor. Since nothing can be done till after Christmas, we block the spout’s opening with Akshobhya’s old vest. The Jugaad works, and no more flooding!!
So we bumble along, the house and I, understanding each other a little better everyday.
Now if only the showers would stop behaving like a temperamental girlfriend– hot one minute and cold the next.
