Cherry Audio has released Harmonia, and I love it!
Tumblr media
Cherry Audio has released Harmonia, a versatile synthesizer that can create evolving polyphonic sounds reminiscent of vector and wave sequencer synths from the 80s and 90s.
The instrument features two sample-based oscillators, interpolated harmonic scanning, and a powerful modulation matrix.
With 285 waveforms and the ability to import custom samples, Harmonia offers a wide range of sound options.
The synth also includes a filter, envelope sections, a master limiter, and various effects. Harmonia is available in mono or polyphonic mode, with up to 16 voices. It is priced at $49.
Here are some of the features of Harmonia:
Two sample-based oscillators with interpolated harmonic scanning
Powerful modulation matrix with 19 sources and 80 destinations
285 waveforms and the ability to import custom samples
Filter, envelope sections, master limiter, and various effects
Mono or polyphonic mode with up to 16 voices
Tumblr media
Harmonia is a unique sample-based synth designed to give sound designers rich and evolving polyphonic sounds associated with vector and wave sequencer synthesizers from the 80s and 90s. The synth boasts two sample-based oscillators that use mostly stereo samples taken from a range of synths, instruments, voices, lo-fi sounds, and other sources. Each oscillator uses a technique called 'interpolated harmonic scanning' to generate up to eight individual pitches at the same time, which can be tuned either using semitones or a harmonic series.
The synth's parameters are laid out clearly, and there's relatively little menu-diving to be done. Each oscillator's section has a display that shows these eight pitches, and you can alter each pitch using its unique knob. You can also move between them using the Center slider under each display, as well as changing their level sliders. Each oscillator has an octave and detune control, as well as a variety of presets for both semitone or harmonic setups that dial in a ready-made setup.
With 285 waveforms to choose from, as well as the option to import and store your own, the selection of sounds on offer is more or less infinite. Things go to the next level when you start to leverage the powerful modulation matrix, which is able to route modulator signals between any of 19 sources and 80 destinations. This enables you to start animating sounds and creating sequences. By calling up any of the sequence patches from the presets, you'll see how sources have been routed to parameters like the Center slider (to dynamically choose new pitches), effects settings and more.
youtube
Harmonia can operate in monophonic or polyphonic mode with up to 16 voices. There's also a lot more sound shaping available, including a multimode filter, amp and filter envelope sections, and a master limiter. The impressive effects section features distortion, modulated delays, echo and reverb, each with their own controls and effect types for you to choose from. Performance controls, including bend depth and note glide, further add to the expressive options available to you.
The instrument is geared largely towards generating harmonic variations, with powerful tuning options that mean you can create all manner of multi-tuned patches, blending and morphing them to create truly organic results and rich sounds. The ability to play and change these in real-time also makes it quite special, fun, creative, and reactive to your input.
Harmonia is a very capable sound design tool used across various musical genres, especially for creating sequences. Whether they're simple or complex, the combination of LFO-triggered sequences, the multitude of pitches on offer, and the excellent onboard effects provide excellent results. Love it!❤️ Go and get your Harmonia at Cherry Audio.

Harmonia, the new synth made by Cherry Audio, is an extremely interesting new synth that presents an intriguing mix of wavetable, additive, and FM synthesis in one VST available on IOS, Windows, and Linux. In addition to the aforementioned combination of different synthesis techniques, they also utilize the harmonic series. This is done through modulating eight harmonics of either one of the synths oscillators or through a sample that is given in the synth or user generated. Each harmonic available to manipulate in the synth can have its volume lowered or increased along with some distortion being available for use through a function called “center” on the synth which amplifies and distorts a single harmonic. These controls are available on both oscillators on the synth with both being able to be modulated through the synth’s matrix which has a total of fifty destinations for modulation for near endless possibilities for interesting sound design. Additionally, the harmonics controls can be set to semitones which can open the door for unique harmonies and polyphony with these controls, especially with the possibility of setting both oscillators to semitones instead of harmonics allowing for even more harmonic possibilities. To add onto this this, this synth seems to be especially geared toward more niche genres of electronic music such as IDM, UKG, future bass, dubstep, and drum and bass. This is because of its ability to manipulate wave forms to create unique sounds and sounds that are staples of the aforementioned genres such as “wubs”. If you want to the link is below this post.

KDHX Twofer: “No Time To Tarry Here” and “Music from the Hills,” 25 March 2018
My Facebook feed reminds that I seem to do several of these back to back shows around this time of year.  While I seem not to learn that 4 hours is more than twice as draining as 2, it is also true that for both shows I have a system in place that means that I am beyond the gee whiz phase.
For “No Time To Tarry Here,” the folk-y show, I can build it from my own collection and have one on the shelf ready to go.  I had three (religion influenced  (never a bad idea but this was Palm Sunday), Ireland in America (since I thought I might have been on the day after St. Patrick’s Day), and folkies playing jazz) and worked up #s 1 and 3.  Actually putting together just an hour was quite easy as I had to limit my choices and held my own interest.
As always the juxtapositions appeal: part singing from Blue Murder and Doc Watson led ensembles; a guitar set of Spence, Simpson, Davis, and Kaukonen; two takes on “Stars in My Crown;”  the St. Louis trad jazz revival tradition with the Sidney Street Shakers going all in on just one facet of the Geyer Street Sheiks; and lots of guitar stretching out on jazz standards.
Here’s that playlist:

Then, I opened a two part Sephardic series with a geographical survey.  I had a little bit of Spain, including some of the surrounding culture from that time, before going to Morocco, Thessaloniki, Bulgaria/Bosnia, and Turkey.  Next week will return to all the areas but Morocco to play the Sephardic next to the dominant culture.
What this week showed is that there is a definite through line where Sephardic music sounds distinctively itself.  But already I can tell that the music changes as it moves around.
I often explore borders for this show.  This time the border isn’t regional but with a displaced, mobile people.
For this week though I could play a nicely exotic music that draws on other favorite types.
Here’s what it looked like:
