FAMOUS AUTHORS

Built in the early '60s to revitalize Chicago's Old Town neighborhood the Sandburg Village—named after Illinois author Carl Sandburg—encompasses nine separate high-rises all named after other prominent authors such as Faulkner, Elliot, Dickinson, and Alcott. Four decades after the units' 1979 conversion to condos Chicago native Jeff Zimmermann added a tribute to five addional authors with portraits of Ernest Hemingway, James Baldwin, Upton Sinclair, Betty Smith, and Ayn Rand. Internationally renowned artist Zimmermann's work has been described as "having the sex appeal of commercial art" and his application of a background in graphic design to creating flashy and inviting portraits is fully on display here.

Bronzeville Legends Mural Initiative Wins 2023 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award

The Richard H. Driehaus Preservation Awards honors individuals, organizations, and programs demonstrating a commitment to historic preservation.

I am pleased to announce that our public art initiative, Bronzeville Legends, has won the 2023 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

Bronzeville Legends, launched in 2014, is a curated multi-site placemaking campaign that uses large murals of the South Side community’s past residents to celebrate Bronzeville’s rich heritage.

Other award winners this year include the Old Post Office Chicago Adaptive Reuse Project, the Tribune Tower Renovation and more.

Painted with "the sex appeal of commercial art" Jeff Zimmerman credits his "shrewd use of flashy and graphic forms" to his background as a graphic designer. While Zimmermann's work covers a broad gamut of styles this stunning 16-story graphic work was completed in 2017 for the 30 East apartment project at S Holden Ct and E Balbo Dr in the Wabash Arts Corridor of Chicago. I believe the hand portion of the painting facing Balbo Dr was updated in 2020
