Bollywood Movies Part CLXXXIX
Tumblr media
Murad (Ranveer Singh) lives in Dharavi and writes rap lyrics about his life and the inequalities he experiences. When he meets MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi), he is introduced to Mumbai’s rap world and takes it by storm. Meanwhile, he deals with his secret and possessive girlfriend Safeena (Alia Bhatt) and his father (Vijay Raaz) bringing home a second wife.
Gully Boy is a Bollywood vision of the rap culture in India. As a coming of age movie, it is quite good. However, it is completely divorced from the political aspects of rap in India. Also, Ranveer Singh’s skin was darkened for the movie, presumably so that he would seem more “authentic.” It is a good movie, but does not deserve to be India’s pick for the Oscars. Here is a good review about the problems with Gully Boy. Favorite songs are Jingostan and Mere Gully Mein (and the original).
Tumblr media
NTR Kathanayakudu essays the acting career of N.T. Rama Rao (Nandamuri Balakrishna) from his leaving a government job through his rise to stardom to his decision to found the Telugu Desam Party. NTR Mahayanakudu follows his rise to Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, his ousting by Indira Gandhi and the Congress party, and his eventual return to his position. It also deals with his wife Basavaramatarakam’s (Vidya Balan) cancer and eventual death.
While it was interesting to learn about a piece of Indian history that I knew nothing about, both NTR Kathanayakudu and NTR Mahayanakudu were over 2 hours in length each, making both films boring and dense. It is clearly Nandamuri Balakrishna’s vision of his parents and they both come off as idealized versions instead of real people. Favorite songs are Kathanayaka, Bhantureethi Koluvu, and Ramanna Katha. None of the songs have subtitles.
Tumblr media
Havaldar Ishar Singh (Akshay Kumar) is transferred to head the communications post of Saragarhi between Forts Gulistan and Lockhart. When there, he works to get the men stationed there into shape. Meanwhile, the Orakzais and Afridis (two Pashtun tribes) unite to take over the forts, beginning with Saragarhi, the strategic point between the two.
Kesari is interesting because it takes a literal last stand that doesn’t have much documentation, and speculates about the people involved and the actual events of the battle. The movie is best when focusing on this, especially the high paced events of the battle, as depicted in the movie. When it doesn’t though, the movie is lackluster. I really didn’t like the depiction of the Pashtuns as religious fanatics when the actual cause of the tensions was the British rule that the Pashtuns were rebelling against. Favorite songs are Ve Maahi, Deh Shiva (audio only), and Teri Mitti. Ve Maahi and Teri Mitti have transliterated Hindi subs.

The model code of conduct of the Election Commission of India has been mostly reduced to a joke by pliant officers, cunning chartered accounts, and contemptuous politicians cocking a snook at the fundamental decency of democracy.
It is most evident in the manner among political parties and politicians which own media as India heads into general elections.
Take the case of Andhra Pradesh which goes to the polls today, and where chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is up against Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
The former has the backing of Eenadu, the Telugu newspaper whose owner Ramoji Rao played a pivotal role in the transformation of Naidu’s father-in-law N.T. Rama Rao from film actor to chief minister in 10 months flat.
Not surprisingly, Eenadu (below) has a jacket ad for Naidu in today’s editions, with a half-page Narendra Modi ad in its inside pages. And two pages of photographs of clean roads, green parks, gleaming buildings artfully conveying the strides under Naidu.
But the revelation is Sakshi, the Telugu newspaper owned by Naidu’s rival, Jagan Mohan Reddy, and modelled on the lines of Eenadu.
It has 14 pages devoted to its owner and his political party, YSRCP.
For starters there are four consecutive broadsheet pages of advertisements with the catchy line ‘Ravaali Jagan, Kaavali Jagan’ (Jagan should come, Jagan should rule), featuring Jagan and his late father, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was a thorn in the flesh for Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries who rescued Eenadu.
But what follows next is a series of political advertisements designed as news which makes a mockery of the model code—but proves the old adage that the freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.
The headlines of the two pages (below) scream: ‘Jaganku oka avakaasham eddaam‘ (let’s give Jagan a chance).
These six pages are interespersed with a two-page spread of the promises of the YSR Congress party should it come to power.
Tumblr media
And then follows a six-page diatribe against Chandrababu Naidu, with pointed barbs at voters names being deleted from the rolls, at law and order under Naidu, his financial assets, etc. Words like rowdilu (rowdies), visham (poison) effortlessly dot the copy.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
‘Raavali Jagan, Kaavali Jagan’: 14 pages in today’s ‘Sakshi’ on its owner Jagan Reddy and his rival Chandrababu Naidu prove the old adage: freedom of the press belongs to the politician who owns one The model code of conduct of the Election Commission of India has been mostly reduced to a joke by pliant officers, cunning chartered accounts, and contemptuous politicians cocking a snook at the fundamental decency of democracy.

via Today Bharat Veteran Tollywood actress Jayasudha gives her sonrsquo;s wedding card to Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy at Tadepalli camp office on Tuesday. HYDERABAD: The formation of new districts in Andhra Pradesh may take place only in 2021. AP Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, during his Praja Sankalpa Yatra before the Assembly elections last year, had promised that the number of districts will be increased from 13 to 25 for decentralisation, better administration and taking governance to doorsteps of the people. In its election manifesto, the YSR Congress promised to turn every Lok Sabha constituency into a district. Taking forward this promise, Mr Reddy has taken up the exercise for formation of new districts. However, the Union home ministry has directed all states not to make any jurisdictional changes from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021. This is in view of house listing operation (HLO) being taken up, along with updating of National Population Register (NPR), as part of Census of India-2021. Consequently, the state government is not in a position to form new districts till the census is completed. nbsp; The state administration and the Chief Minister had earlier thought that delimitation of Assembly constituencies will be completed in a year. They decided to form new districts after that. But the Centre instead decided to take up delimitation exercise in the two Telugu states along with that of other states ldquo;after the first Census after 2026rdquo;. Because of this, the state government decided to take up the exercise of forming new districts. At a recent media conference in Visakhapatnam, a close associate of Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy, Mr V. Vijayasai Reddy, MP, asserted that the state government will form new districts soon. Incidentally, the Telangana state government has already formed new districts, increasing the number from 10 to 34. In his Praja Sankalpa Yatra, Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy had also promised to name some districts after their prominent leaders and freedom fighters. He promised to name one district in Krishna area after N.T. Rama Rao, renowned Telugu actor and founder of the Telugu Desam. It is believed the state government will name Gudivada after NTR district because Nimmakuru, the birthplace of NTR, falls under this district. The Chief Minister had announced renaming Krishna district itself as NTR district but the proposal received criticism from several quarters. Continuing his refrain during the Praja Sankalpa Yatra in Visakhapatnam district, the Chief Minister had announced that one district would be named after Alluri Sitarama Raju, the great freedom fighter. The state government may consider naming Araku district after Alluri Sitarama Raju. nbsp;

Heritage Foods bets on value-added dairy business to boost growth
Heritage Foods is currently in talks with a European firm for launching flavoured yoghurt in India
  When Nara Brahmani, daughter-in-law of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, joined family business Heritage Foods Ltd as executive director after completing her Masters in Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2013, the company’s sales growth was sliding.
Even after two decades, the dairy firm founded by Naidu was restricted to southern India, had a loss-making retail unit, and the market was not favourable.
Once she took charge, Brahmani, granddaughter of charismatic actor-politician N.T. Rama Rao and daughter of actor Nandamuri Balakrishna, decided to take the company national, spin off the loss-making retail unit, expand the dairy business through acquisitions, and change the way Heritage was marketed as it shifted focus back to its core business of dairy.
Heritage Foods is currently in talks with a European firm for launching flavoured yoghurt in India. “The focus is going to be value-added dairy products. At present, the value-added portfolio accounts for 24% of our dairy revenue which we aim to take to 40% in five years,” said Brahmani. The firm already sells value-added products such as flavoured milk, curd, butter milk, frozen dessert and ice cream.
On its 25th anniversary in April this year, the firm announced plans to treble revenue to Rs6,000 crore by 2022 from Rs2,642 crore in the year to March 2017. Of this, dairy accounted for Rs1,870 crore. “Our aim is to become a nationally recognized brand by 2022. We’ll focus on dairy, especially value-added products. We’ll focus on growing organically, and will be opportunistic on acquisitions,” said Brahmani.
To expand, the firm had in October 2016 announced the acquisition of the dairy unit of Reliance Retail, the retailing arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd. The acquisition, completed in April, gave Heritage entry into five states and two brands: Dairy Life and Dairy Pure, besides strengthening its presence in west India. It is now present in 15 states. Prior to this, it had bought Karnataka-based Teja Dairy in May 2016.
While the acquisition was in process, Heritage sold its loss-making retail arm along with agri-sourcing and bakery businesses to Kishore Biyani-led Future Retail Ltd, in which Heritage has a 3.65% stake. The deal took place in November. “Retail requires scale which we did not have and it was not our core,” said Brahmani.
Heritage Foods, which has so far spent about 0.5% of revenue on marketing, plans to double its marketing spend starting this year. It has already changed its logo and packaging and started campaigns aimed at positioning itself as a ‘fresh’ brand.
“In each market, consumers get milk within five hours of collection. The five-hour window keeps the milk fresh, and this is an advantage we have over competitors,” said Brahmani.
var aax_size='728x90'; var aax_pubname = 'dainewind-21'; var aax_src='302';
However, the market Heritage is planning to tap is crowded and has seen the entry of a bunch of multinational companies, primarily in the value added segment. These include American food and beverages company PepsiCo that extended its Quaker Oats brand into the dairy segment recently and its rival Coca-Cola which stepped into the market earlier.
Besides, two home-grown giants with wide retail networks—ITC Ltd and Tata Global Beverages Ltd—are readying to tap the value-added dairy market.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The estimated Rs80,000-Rs 90,000 crore dairy market in India is dominated by cooperatives such as Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd that owns the Amul brand. Other significant competitors include Swiss packaged food firm Nestle India Ltd, French food products firm Danone SA, Britannia Industries Ltd, Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd, and Parag Milk Foods Ltd.
Analysts, however, are bullish on Heritage. “The company is smartly straddling the high-returns pouch milk segment and high-growth and margin accretive medium shelf life curd and yogurt segment. Unlike high shelf life products like cheese, branded ghee and flavoured milk, curd and yogurt entail higher margins — 1.7-2x liquid milk — but do not involve high working capital and hence returns are much better,” brokerage firm Edelweiss Securities Ltd said in a report on 14 February 2017.

via Today Bharat nbsp; nbsp; The resignation of former CBI joint director VV Laksmi Narayana from the Jana Sena Party is the latest in a series of blows to the party since it was floated by popular actor Pawan Kalyan nearly six years ago. The former Indian Police Service (IPS) official cited Pawan's decision to return to films as the reason for his resignation. He said in his resignation letter that the Jana Sena chief's inconsistent words made him take this decision. The actor, however, defended his action saying he knows only acting to support his family and other dependents. Pawan recently started shooting for a Telugu re-make of Hindi movie 'Pink' and is reported to have signed another movie. Lakshmi Narayana, who had taken voluntary retirement in 2018 to enter politics and joined Jana Sena last year, contested unsuccessfully from Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha seat. He was reportedly unhappy with Pawan for not consulting him while taking key decisions. Lakshmi Narayana as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) joint director headed probes into several high-profile cases, including disproportionate assets cases against present Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. "Lakshmi Narayana's resignation is a political setback for Jana Sena. He was among the top three leaders in the party and garnered maximum number of votes in the 2019 elections. This will have an adverse impact not just on the party, but also on the image of Pawan Kalyan as a leader," political analyst P Raghavendra Reddy told IANS. This came at a time when Pawan was hoping to be back at the centre stage of Andhra Pradesh politics with the recently announced alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the actor's move to join hands with the BJP once again came under criticism from various quarters, with many wondering how he can do this without the Centre according a special category status to the state, an issue on which he had severed ties with the BJP. "After losing the elections, and by forging an alliance with the BJP, Jana Sena Party and its supremo have clearly indicated they do not have the muscle and will to carry on and develop an independent identity. Today, Pawan Kalyan has turned into a BJP leader and people will look at him as one," said Raghavendra Reddy. The analyst believes that Jana Sena has gone the Praja Rajyam way and surrendered its political ambitions to a national party. Pawan Kalyan's electoral debut was more disastrous than his elder brother K. Chiranjeevi's. The superstar had floated the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) amid much fanfare a few months before the 2009 elections, hoping to recreate the magic of legendary actor and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder N.T. Rama Rao, who had created a record of sorts in the early 1980s by storming to power in nine months after taking the plunge into politics. Chiranjeevi's party came a cropper, securing 18 seats in the 294-member Assembly of the then united Andhra Pradesh. The actor was defeated from one of the constituencies he contested. Pawan Kalyan, who was with Chiranjeevi as the leader of the youth wing of the PRP, later fell out with him over his decision to merge the PRP with the Congress. Pawan floated the Jana Sena in March 2014 to 'question powers that be'. His ire was entirely targeted at the Congress on the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. A strong supporter of then prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Pawan decided not to contest the elections and instead backed the TDP-BJP alliance. He shared the dais with Modi and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu at election rallies, calling upon people to reject both the Congress and the YSRCP. Later, Pawan distanced himself from both the parties after the BJP-led NDA government, of which TDP was a part, decided not to accord special category status to Andhra Pradesh, a promise made by the alliance during the poll campaign. In the April 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, which Jana Sena fought in alliance with the Left parties and Bahujan Samaj Party, Pawan's party got just one seat in the 175-member House. Pawan himself was defeated from both the Assembly seats he contested. It was a huge blow for the 49-year-old, who was hoping to emerge as a kingmaker -- if not the king. What was more shocking for him was that the YSRCP came to power with a huge majority and Jagan Mohan Reddy became the Chief Minister. Pawan always had a strong dislike for the YSRCP chief. Though enjoying a huge fan following, Pawan Kalyan failed to build the party at the grassroot level. The critics blame his mercurial nature and part time politician-like attitude. He is known for sudden bursts of activity followed by a long pause.

via Today Bharat After suffering an embarrassing defeat in the 2019 state and general elections,nbsp;Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu seems to have changed the tone and nature of his arracks on incumbent Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.nbsp;The discourse that the party has spun around the chief ministerrsquo;s faith seems to have drawn inspiration from the BJPrsquo;s language, experts say. After Reddy presented silk robes to the Hindu deity at Tirumala during the Bramhotsavam ceremony,nbsp;he was accused by the TDP of not stating that he is a Christiannbsp;in the templersquo;s register, in line with past precedents. Not long ago, Naidu sent a message to his one-time allynbsp;ndash; the BJPnbsp;ndash; that he is no longer sailing with the Congressnbsp;by fielding a candidate in the by-electionnbsp;to Telanganarsquo;s Huzurnagar assembly segment. The ldquo;grand alliancerdquo; formed with the Congress to defeat the Telangana Rastra Samithi during the Telangana state elections became defunct after its poll fiasco. Naidu played an important role in the efforts to form a nation-wide anti-BJP front during the general election. Though the party did not formally ally with the Congress, it gravitated towards the grand old party as a result of its efforts to unseat Narendra Modi. Rahul Gandhi with Chandrababu Naidu. Photo: PTI However, after the TDPrsquo;s rout in the 2019 elections, Naidu now appears to have declared a ceasefire with the NDA government. His party has not only remained silent on some important decisionrsquo;s taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi but has also backed the NDArsquo;s revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir. While TDPrsquo;s founder, actor-politician N.T. Rama Rao, built the party on the rhetoric of self-pride of Telugu people, Naidu did not counter Union home minister Amit Shahrsquo;s comments on Hindi. The BJP president said Hindi was necessary to ldquo;uniterdquo; the country before backing down under pressure from other South Indian political parties, but the TDP chose to remain silent. Does it signal that Naidu could do a U-turn and join hands with the BJP? TDP insiders whonbsp;The Wirenbsp;spoke to confirmed that the former chief minister is mulling over the possibility of extending an olive branch to his former ally. This, party insiders say, may give the TDP enough strength to take on Jagan and save his party, which is currently facing its worst-ever existential crisis. Naidu under pressure Naidu has often said that he sees an opportunity in every threat and that his party has faced many hiccups since its inception in 1982. Of course, this is true. The government headed by NTR was toppled by then-governor Ram Lal at the behest of Indira Gandhi. Under NTRrsquo;s leadership, the party faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Congress in 1989 after surviving a coup. In 1995, the TDP faced another coup, this time engineered by Naidu himself, who unseated his father-in-law. It remained in power until 2004, before going into hibernation for a decade after Congress leader Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Jaganrsquo;s father, rode to victory. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the TDP was able to emerge comfortably victorious in 2014, with Narendra Modirsquo;s help. For Naidu, the 2019 election was different: Modi was not his ally; Jagan had the backing of Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao; Naidu was forced to wage a three-cornered poll battle involving the BJP, YSR Congress and Pawan Kalyanrsquo;s Jana Sena Party. The result was a resounding victory for Jaganrsquo;s party, which secured 151 of the 175 assembly seats and 22 of the statersquo;s 25 Lok Sabha seats. Since coming to power, the YSR Congress has aggressively attacked the TDP and Naidu, leading many to label the governmentrsquo;s actions as ldquo;revenge politicsldquo;. A structure adjacent to Naidursquo;s riverside residence near Amaravati, which was used as a conference hall during his period as CM, was pulled down within days after Jagan came to power. The government has serviced notices to demolish Naidursquo;s rented building, which allegedly violates environmental norms. Around this time, the TDPrsquo;s firebrand leader in the Palnadu region of Guntur district and former Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Raonbsp;killed himself at his Hyderabad residence. Naidu blamed his suicide on Reddyrsquo;s ldquo;vindictive politicsrdquo;. The TDPrsquo;s former assembly whip, facing several non-bailable criminal cases, landed in jail soon after the YSR Congress government was formed. The disastrous poll performance also saw several leadersnbsp;ndash; includingnbsp;four Rajya Sabha membersnbsp;ndash; deserting the TDP and joining the BJP. The collective impact of these developments was to make keeping the party flock together a daunting task, apart from the party ranks losing confidence. The TDP has accused the Jaganmohan Reddy government of lsquo;revenge politicsrsquo;. Photo: Twitter/@ysjagan lsquo;Historic blunderrsquo; A former TDP minister, wishing to remain anonymous, said Naidursquo;s decision to break away from the BJP and align with the Congress,nbsp;his partyrsquo;s traditional rival, was a lsquo;historic blunderrsquo;. ldquo;We paid a heavy price for this blunder. What we urgently need is a course correction and join hands with our former ally,rdquo; he commented. This view is echoed by the partyrsquo;s old-timers, who form the core. However, other leaders who joined the TDP from the Congressnbsp;ndash; including Naidunbsp;ndash; are flexible with regard to alliances. The BJP has been a natural and long-time ally of the TDP, even at difficult times for NTR, such came as the 1985 coup. The BJP even helped NTR get back to power with massive public support in the fight against the Congress. That is the reason why the Kamma caste, to which both NTR and Naidu belong, failed to digest the partyrsquo;s pro-Congress line. Kammas, who constitute a major funding source for the party, were disheartened by the TDPrsquo;s closeness with the Congress and the subsequent poll debacle. According to reports, they have started looking at the BJP in pursuit of greener pastures. Analysts view the Naidursquo;s subtle signals to support the saffron party as part of his attempts to check the migration of the Kamma elite. It also has the benefit of seeking support from the ruling party at the Centre in his fight against Jagan. Kota Sai Krishna, a BJP spokesperson, however, said his party will stick to Amit Shahrsquo;s statement that its doors are permanently shut for Naidu. The partyrsquo;s national president had made the statement after the TDP broke away from the NDA. Gali Nagaraja
